Jonas’ Corner
I’m on my way to the Worlds. I’m building towards it that is. But I am starting to feel the race I’ve been looking forward to for almost a year coming very close. I know which races I will ride prior to it now. Me and Brian worked out my programme right after Post Danmark Rundt, so I’m all set.
First up for me is Tour of Ireland. Then I will race Tour of Poland just like I did last year with GLS, where I finished in the top 20. After that I will race about three small one-day races to really get into World Championships mode, as that’s also a one-day event. It’s fortuneate for me to have Brian Holm as my sporting director as he is also sporting director for the Danish National Team, so I’m certain I will be named captain on the day.
I’m really starting to look forward, but for now I’m off to Ireland.

Tour of Ireland
This race is just about honing my race form, but it has been like that for quite a few races now and I have managed to come away with 2 wins in those races. I might go for a stage win here in Ireland but above all I will try to bring Cavendish to victory here. Cav has just won Rothaus Regio Tour taking 2 stage wins in the process, but besides that he has had an awful season and Hagen has overtaken him as the team’s no. One sprinter. My job is to lead him out in this race and I hope I can get him in position to salvage some wins in what has been a dissapointing season for my British team-mate.
Stage 1
More or less flat and it would of course come down to a sprint. I had Cav in my wheel the whole finale but we struggled to hook on to a decent train. In the end I took a chance and just powered forward myself with Mark in my wheel.
It isn’t the strongest the sprinters field here in Ireland but anyhow I was pretty surprised that I actually started pulling away from the others as I opened up with Cav staying just behind me. Cab then moved out of my wheel easily and he looked a comfortable winner. Cyclo Collstrop’s Mirko Selvaggi neared in a bit though, but Cavendish took stage one and the leader’s jersey. I finished 3rd.

Stage 2
Today’s stage to Killarney was very similar to the first stage, but it turned out much more tough. A break of nine riders got away in the early stages and we were about the only team interested in pulling them back in. So while me and Cav had an easy ride down in the pack, our team-mates really put in an amazing effort to try and pull the break back in. It didn’t seem like it would work though as the nine riders had almost 2 minutes with 10 kilometres to go. At this point all of our team-mates were beat, so I took the front and started pushing with everything I had.
Amazingly it worked and when I lead-out Cavendish we could see the breakaway riders just up the road.
I only had the strenght to pull off a very short sprint for Cav before he took over and comfortably won the stage and extended his lead in the GC.

Tour of Ireland – Stage 3
Still on the British Isles for what should today come down to another sprint in one of the biggest cycling events in Ireland. My form is coming together nicely but there’s still one month to go until the Worlds so I will have to watch out that I don’t peak too early, which means I will ride very defensively in Tour of Poland and not try anything at all. I have tested my legs quite a bit in this race though setting Mark up nicely on the previous two stages. Let’s see if I can do it again.
It did come down to a sprint with our team-mates controlling the early break perfectly, but I didn’t have the legs to get Cav into a very good position. He was up there though.
And he actually managed to burst into the lead despite of my weak effort.
But Vermeltfoort and Miyazawa was closing in and on the last couple of hundred metres they were all three neck to neck. Cav gave it his all, but Miyazawa surprisingly came away with the win.
Tomorrow is the toughest stage of the Tour with a finish featuring two very steep hills within the last 20 kilometres. I’m dedicated to working for Cav and I won’t try an attack on the hills, unless it’s our last resort to come away with something. But Cav is going really strong and I think he can follow me up those hills pretty well.

Tour of Ireland – Stage 4
The hilly stage of the Tour and the GC will no doubt be settled today. Our plan is for me to keep a high pace up the two steep hills in the final to prevent anyone from breaking clear and take the leader’s jersey from Cav. I had a quick chat with CSC’s Pierre Rolland as he is very focused on doing something today and we will need to control him if we want Cav to win this.
We controlled today’s stage alongside CSC and reeled in the early break before the first of the two hills, where CSC injected some pace with me and Cav sitting a few positions back.
On the last hill which tops about 6 kilometres from the finish, Rolland attacked while I was relaying. I pushed as hard as I could and Rolland didn’t get the gap he wanted and was reeled in in the descent.
Cav stayed with me very impressively but as we splashed down from the descent and onto the final flat section I found myself in a great position to win the stage. So I started a long sprint.
But Mirko Selvaggi was just a bit stronger and won the stage.
Miyazawa finished 3rd and Cav took 5th, which means that Miyazawa is now just 12 seconds behind in the GC, but I think Cav will be able to hold him off quite easily.

Stage 5
The final stage before I head off to Poland for my last stage race before the Worlds. We’re almost in September now, which is month where the Worlds are held. It gives me the chills. I didn’t think about it a whole lot today though as we had to defend our overall lead. A lot of riders tried to get away, but they got away in large numbers so we had to do a lot of work before we let a group of 4 riders go clear about 50 kilometres into the stage, with 100 kilometres to go.
Pinotti, Padrnos, Hacker, Davis and Hoeben did a great job to reel in all the break to set me and Cav up for another go at the finish line.
I managed to hit the front with Cav in my wheel as the sprint started. No-one could follow us. They couldn’t even catch me.
For a long time I though I had the win, but suddenly Miyazawa came shooting up the right hand side, forcing Cav to go past me. But both Cav and Miyazawa faded and it ended with a photo finish between me and my team-mate. You try and tell the winner from this.
Cav was given it! I was a bit dissapointed at first but after a couple of minutes after congratulating Cav on the win it didn’t bother me at all. I had done my job here and I had finished 3rd in the GC, so I’m actually very happy with the outcome of this. Now I’m off to Poland, but eventhough my form is getting there I don’t want to waste a lot of energy there and then have nothing left for the Worlds. I have had a long season now as I have been racing since January and at some point I will have nothing left in the tank and I don’t want that moment to be at World Championships.

Tour of Poland
We’re in September and while I’m racing here in Poland we have teams racing in three other races, Vuelta a España, Deutschland Tour and Tour of Missouri. I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to those races but focused on getting through this one the right way. Because there are so many races right now a lot of teams showed up with 2, 3 or 4 riders in their line-ups, so we’d only have a 82-man peloton for this race. It was pretty much like that last year too where I was racing here with Team GLS. I think I finished overall 15th on that occasion but I don’t really care about the GC this time. If I get up there, fine. If I don’t, I’m not really bothered.
The first stage was a very short team time trial and being one of the very few teams lining up with more than 5 riders, we were secured a top placing. We finished 5th on the day in the same time as 3rd and 4th. Cofidis took the stage Sébastien Minard taking the leader’s jersey.
The next four days were flat stages which would most like come down to sprints. The second stage didn’t though. A large group got away in the start and two riders just managed to stay away, finishing 47 seconds ahead of the pack, where I took 2nd in the sprint, of the pack that is. Muravyev of Astana took the stage ahead of Caisse’s Charteau, who took over the overall lead. I moved to 9th in the GC.
I wanted to test my sprinting legs today as I will probably need them on the relatively flat route in Copenhagen, so I gave it a go in the sprint. Pavel Padrnos led me to the front and as I could see the finish line up the road I just started to sprint. And no-one could respond. I won the stage. My first ProTour win. Surely the pack isn’t very strong but still I think it’s a big achievement for me since it’s my first year riding on the ProTour. With the win I moved to 4th in the GC, but still I don’t want to dig deep on the hilly stage 6.
Stage 4 was another mass sprint and I wanted to have another go at it after my win yesterday. The team did a great job reeling in the break near the end of the stage and then Padrnos just drove me to the front, for me to open my sprint at the front of the pack. I didn’t expect it to go very well, but apparently my form is really getting good, because for the second consecutive stage Murilo Fischer had to settle for 2nd place behind me, as I took another win in Poland. With this result I rised to 2nd in the GC, 30 seconds off Charteau.
I have definitely gotten what I wanted from this race, so on stage 5 I didn’t want to go all-in in the sprint. I stayed a bit in the background and when the sprint started I wasn’t ever really close. But I didn’t want to be either, so my 11th on the stage was good enough for me. Rolland won the stage and I think he will try something tomorrow after we didn’t allow him to get away in Tour of Ireland. I’m still 2nd in the GC, but I won’t exhaust myself trying to defend it, meaning I won’t attack tomorrow.
I didn’t really have to attack though on the 6th stage as I just had to stay with the pack to be among the favourites. The peloton was severely decimated as we hit the final climb to the finish. It was down to about 15 riders in which I also had the backup of Marco Pinotti and Craig Lewis. As I had predicted Rolland attacked at the foot of the climb and he held onto his lead finishing 17 seconds ahead of the group of favourites. I took 8th on the stage and finished in the chase group alongside Pinotti. So I will only drop down to 3rd in the GC, so it looks as though I will be on the podium in Krakow tomorrow. Charteau kept his lead and looks to win Tour of Poland.
I remember taking my first ProTour top 3 result last year on the last stage of Tour of Poland. Back then I was just a continental rider so I didn’t get points from the 2nd place I took on that stage. This year I am a ProTour rider and I will take a significant number of points with my 3rd overall and my two stage wins. Today I didn’t really want to compete for the win though. I stayed up there though and I ended up finishing 8th in the final sprint. Gardeyn took the stage ahead of Fischer and Hutarovich, so the Top 10 won’t change and I have managed to finish on the podium in a ProTour race where I didn’t even attack. Pretty strange when you think about how hard I had to work to finish 17th in the Basque Tour back in April.
Now I only have three small one-day races to go before it’s time for the World Championships in Copenhagen.

Thanks for the comments
Memorial Viviana Manservisi
I told I was going to race three one-day races before travelling home to Denmark for the Worlds, but that number was cut down to two. I took the decision under counseling by Brian Holm, who has put my race programme together for my build-up to the Worlds. I was supposed to race some Belgian hilly race on September 17, but naturally everyone is feeling fatigue at this point of the season and so am I, so we decided to skip it. The team rode it of course and Bettini won it, so he is also looking good for the Worlds.
Instead I’m racing this race, Memorial Viviana Manservisi today, September 20 and tomorrow I will be in France for Grand Prix d’Isbergues. Both of these races are flat so I will have the chance to do a final test of my sprinting legs before I go and compete for the Rainbow colours. Today we didn’t field a particularily star-studded team, but tomorrow I will race with Bettini and Greipel, who are both in very good form for the Worlds.
The race started out as so many other races with a small break going away, only to be reeled in later. In the final 20 kilometres or so a large group seperated itself from the pack, so we had to move to the front to try and reel it in. A lot of the riders did get reeled in, but as the sprint started there were still four riders ahead. One of them was Luca Paolini who won the race ahead of my countryman Jakob Fuglsang, who was the last breakaway rider to stay clear. Bernardo Riccio made it a 2-3 for Tinkoff as he led in the pack, while I had to settle for 7th on the day. I didn’t go all-in in the sprint so I’m sure I am exactly where I need to be.

Grand Prix d’Isbergues – Pas de Calais
It’s just about time now, but first I just have to get it over with this formality. It’s my final race before the Worlds and I will leave for Copenhagen already tonight where I will meet up with the other riders named to ride in the Danish National Team for the World Championships. Today I had to share captaincy with André Greipel and Paolo Bettini, who are both looking to shine at the Worlds. But none of us really cared about this particular race, we all want to save our energy for the Worlds, which is exactly in one week now.
And we took it easy today, maybe a bit too easy. A large group of 17 riders got away and we had no-one in it. But as we didn’t really care we didn’t want to try and reel them in. So the break was going to stay away. That became clear with about 80 kilometres to go where the break had a gap of almost 12 minutes. The last 70 of the 200 kilometres contained quite a few hills and it helped sort out the weaker riders in the break, so only six would battle it out.
The six riders were Rinero, Pichot, Rasch, Finot, Ratti and Calzati. Rinero led out his teammate Pichot.
And Pichot looked to take a comfortable win, but he faded horribly in the last metres and Gabriel Rasch tried to throw his bike over the line before Pichot.
But Pichot just edged out the Norwegian. Meanwhile me and Bettini participated in the sprint of the pack and I recieved some real positive feedback from my legs as I was the fastest in pack as I took 20th place in the race. Geslin and Stamsnijder finished ahead of me in the same time, but only because they had attacked a bit earlier.
A nice way to get my good form confirmed. I took off for Copenhagen that same evening. I had a quick chat with Bettini before leaving and we wished each other good luck for what will be the biggest race in my career, maybe indefinitely.

Jonas’ Corner
- World Championships Special I
So I arrived in Copenhagen late on September 21, just a few hours after having competed in Grand Prix d’Isbergues, and I think it really hit me what is going to happen in a weeks time as I stepped outside the airport to find a cab. I haven’t spend a lot of time in Denmark since I signed with Team High Road, in fact I have only been home once this season and that was when I took part in Post Danmark Rundt. I haven’t even raced a single crit here this season, but I hope to do that next season if my calendar allows it.
Tomorrow I was going to meet up with other seven riders selected for the World Championships for Denmark. They are my teammate Lars Bak, my former teammate at GLS Niki Østergaard, his current teammate Jakob Fuglsang, Alex Rasmussen, Matti Breschel, Nicki Sørensen and Allan Johansen. At the hotel that night I had the chance to pick up on the Vuelta which had ended that same day. I haven’t been able to follow it at all and I have to say I was rather surprised as I saw that my team-mate Kanstantin Siutsou had finished in overall 3rd in the race. That’s a very big achievement. He also took a stage win in the process and my other team-mate Dainius Kairelis took two stage wins and on top of that our big Italian Tour talent Diego Ulissi finished 14th overall, so a very succesful Vuelta for us indeed. I really want to ride a Grand Tour next season, but I’m sure I will.
In the Danish Press me and Matti had been named as the two riders the Danish National Team should ride for and in all fairness, Matti deserves to be the leader too. He’s a very strong rider and he get over the hills on the course very well and he too has a great sprint.
The next couple of days went with training and lots of it. We were riding the course over and over again. That’s the advantage of being the home team as the other national teams only arrived a couple of days later, but then the course got very crowded and we had to make sure we didn’t discussed tactics if we were too close to another team.
After three days of training we took a day off. Not meaning we didn’t practice because we did, but not as much as the other days as this was the day of the ITT.
