Stage 3 | Auxonne › Pontarlier, 167.5 km
It was Sergio Henao who on the Cote de Hautepierre-le Chatelet thought he had found the recipe to beat Peter Sagan as he upped the pace right away thinning out the peloton to a mere 40 men, with me and Jungels in his wheel, as Cancellara and Zoidl were a bit further back out of the wind. Sagan who showed his rainbow powers weren’t contained by the green points jersey he was wearing was still among us though.
Reason enough for the Italian Nibali to unleash his legs causing the deciding shift as Kreuziger opened the chase with Kwiatkowski, Gilberto, Sagan, Rui Costa and yours truly in his wheel. To my surprise I was having an even harder time following the pace than Sagan as I was cracking from all sides while on his wheel, refusing to break.
As we passed the top we had already gained a lead of 50 seconds on the rest of the group behind us, as we caught up to Geraint Thomas the remaining rider from the early breakaway.
On the final climb of the day the Cote de la Main, Nibali tried to place an attack for the maillot jaune (which was now virtually mine.) Which would have been a successful attack as I was completely empty, if it wasn’t for Kreuziger who lead the chase himself. Catching Nibali and leading out Sagan for the stage win. I humbly finished last in the group, glad to maintain the leaders jersey in our team for at least one more day. Yellow is starting to look good on me don’t you think?

@sutty68
He will have a lot to carry home with him if he keeps getting the leader jersey in every race he starts this year.
Pity Zoidl isn't in too good of a shape else we would have good chance of keeping the jersey till the end.

Stage 4 | Pontarlier › Bellegarde-Sur-Valserine, 210.5 km
Led out in a peloton by Vandewalle, Sergent and Devolder, through the yellow sunflower fields, in my maillot jaune, made me admittedly daydream about one day doing the same in the Tour de France. Dreams to maybe me realized far off in the future, but for now there were 210km through the French hillside waiting for us.
The race developed fairly easy for our team right up till the foot of the final climb, when it was once again Sergio Henao who opened up the debates. Unlike yesterday a lot less people were willing to react as it were Van den Broeck, Pozzovivo, Van Garderen and Machedo who decided to follow the Colombian.
The little group gained a gap of just about 30 seconds by the time they passed the top, but the gap would quickly be closed by Jungels. Regrouping an 85-man peloton.
On the final climb of the day a short hill of the third category, I was still feeling great. So when Lampre’s Horner attacked it didn’t take long for me to decide and jump after him.
As I overtook the American and looked backwards I was welcomed with the unfortunate news that the one man I did not want in my wheel was right there smiling at me. Green jersey wearer Peter Sagan was looking to make it three in a row.
With Kreuziger also trying to make the jump across, I was left with two options. Either ease off and get taken back by the peloton after which Sagan would win and I would finish anonymously tenth, or keep going and finish second behind Sagan. Logically I picked the latter.
Peter was nice enough to thank me for the help before he dropped me like a wet towel in the sprint. Just ahead of the chasing Kreuziger and Horner I finished second. With the peloton flowing in their draft, making us all get the same time notation. Although I got an extra 4 bonification seconds.

Stage 5 | Bellegarde-Sur-Valserine › La Chaud (Saint Honoré 1500), 173.5 km
Today the general classification would get its first real shake up. With three climbs of the 1st category in the final 50km, today was going to be for the real climbers. Meaning I would be assisting Riccardo Zoidl today.
At the foot of the first of the three climbs it where Sky and Lampre who took over our job. Leading the peloton closer towards the early breakaway who had a lead of over 3 minutes. Carrying fancy names like Dani Moreno, John Gadret and Chris Riblon.
Right away the pace became tough to follow, something which got even worse when Sky’s Cataldo started to hammer away at the front of the peloton. I felt like I had broken through a wall, but with about 50 others including Jungels and Zoidl we managed to cross the top.
In the descent towards Cote de Laffrey which would be the entrée to the final climb up to Saint Honore 1500, we lost one major contender as Wilco Kelderman got a flat. Au revoir Paris-Nice ambitions, time for the Dutch rider to look elsewhere.
About halfway on the Laffrey it was Roman Kreuziger who took over the reins at Tinkoff as he accelerated out of the peloton. Nibali would foloow as did an easy peddling Zoidl, the duo joined by Kwiatkowski, Uran and Van den Broeck. I followed in a group led by Spilak.
As we passed the Laffrey the situation was as such;
<Kreuziger> 32” <Early Breakaway> 23” <Nibali, Van den Broeck, Zoidl, Kwiatkowski, Uran> 15” <Arcier, Van Garderen, Kennaugh, Spilak>
Thanks to Spilak and Van Garderen we caught up to the group Nibali quickly, but with nobody willing to do any work and Van den Broeck accelerating out of the group. I was appointed as the one to keep up the pace.
As we started with the climb towards Saint Honore, Kreuziger his lead would be 43” and Van den Broeck his lead 25”. Reason enough for Zoidl to up the pace and shred the group in two as only Nibali and Uran were able to follow the Austrian.
I was left to suffer in Van Garderen his wheel until completely breaking in the final 500m. Losing 2’35 to stage winner Kreuziger and the yellow jersey. I still held on to the white jersey as I dropped down to 5th in GC and Zoidl jumped up to 3rd.

@Riis123
Anything is better than what Paris-Nice had to offer this year. Thanks for the comment!

Stage 6 | La Mure › Gap, 137.5 km
With a short 137km todays stage was a promise for fireworks, but ended up with a bit of an anti-climax.
It was Rui Costa who tried to attack on the penultimate climb of the day 40km from the finish, an attack which I managed to neutralize as I kept the pace up at the head of the peloton in service of Zoidl.
Halfway the final climb it was Nibali who attacked, the Italian looking to use the final descent as extra incentive to open up a gap between him and the rest of the field.
With nobody able to follow Nibali it was Kreuziger himself who saved not only his own furniture, but that of all other GC riders as well. The Czech becoming the main cause for the anti-climax as Peter Sagan sprinted/descended fast enough in the final kilometer to finish just behind Nibali and making sure everyone was noted down in the same time notification.
During the last kilometer I just managed to escape hitting the asphalt, as I completely miscalculated the final corner.

Stage 7 | Digne-Les-Bains › Cannes, 182 km
The stage to Cannes seemed to be another checkmark ready to be added to Peter Sagan his palmares. The World Champion was in a giving mood today though, as the early breakaway was allowed to fight for the victory flowers today.
AG2R tried to set up a late chase for their sprinter Arnaud Démare, but came 300m too late to completely catch the break.
Even though it was hosing rain, I still had to visit the podium to once again put on the white jersey. The question of the day at the dinner table that night being whether I could successfully defend the jersey in the final time trial tomorrow. My main rival Kwiatkowski 11 seconds behind me.

It was a shame Nicholas couldn't hold on to the Leaders jersey for a while but he is still in a good position on the GC

Stage 8 | Nice › Nice, 32.5 km
The 32km long time trial up and down the Col d’Eze was the main reason I was sent to this year’s Paris-Nice by Gianluca. The time trial suited me and could proof to be a good morale boost for the upcoming Giro d’Italia. A boost which might become even better if I managed to maintain my 11 seconds lead on Kwiatkowski.
The race to the sun could have been dubbed “The race to the rain” as these last two days have been nothing, but dark clouds. Luck would have it that Fabian Cancellera started as one of the early ones and clocked down the fastest time. As it started to pour rain nobody was able to get close to the Swiss his time anymore. Nobody, but one man.
Just as in the Algarve I managed to get into my rhythm fairly quickly as I rolled off the slippery podium.
The first time check was one third onto the Col d’Eze and would bring the verdict that I was chasing Kwiatkowski by 14 seconds. The Pole the fastest to cross the 1st point.
The second half of the climb had more switching gradients and proved to be a much better fit for me, as I even managed to see the ahead of me starting Uran at times up the road. I crossed the top of the climb leading Kwiatkowski by a full 8 seconds! I had clocked down the fastest time up the Eze and nobody would beat it anymore.
With strong head-on gusts of wind the descent proved to be a lot less friendly though. On the less steep sections I really had to hammer away at the big gear to keep up speed. Nonetheless I couldn’t help crossing the third checkpoint chasing Kwiatkowski by 4 seconds again. As the Polish champion once again clocked the fastest time.
In the final kilometers I could slowly feel the seconds ticking away as on the flat I simply did not have the ability to keep up a high speed. Crossing the finish-line with a time of 49’52 which was 26 seconds slower than Kwiatkowski.
Nothing much could have been done about the Pole today as we was clearly the strongest one. Even falling short of Cancellara his time by only 6 seconds. I still managed to finish in the exact same time as Tony Martin so I knew there was little I could have done better. To look at someone who had a tougher day than I did I could simply look at Nibali who fell 0.19 seconds short of winning this year’s Paris-Nice.
With Zoidl finishing 3rd and I 5th and two stage wins, the race had been a success for our team though. Reason enough for us to share a glass of champagne in our hotel that night at the rainy Côte d'Azur.

@sutty68, @dark_x2012
Yeah top 5 in the Paris-Nice field is really a great achievement. Much harder to race against than the competition in the previous Vuelta.
@fernando97
Thanks for the comment. And happy that you like the screenshots!

In my preparation for the Giro d’Italia I had decided to place a visit to Sicily. (Outside business hours.) Where the grande partenza of this year’s Giro would take place in Milazzo, Messina. The province of Vicenzo Nibali who ironically would not be starting in this years Giro rather placing his focus on the Tour de Frace.
I didn’t come to Sicily for the picturesque view though. It was my first love who carried the honor of my visit, her name Etna, her personality volcanic. The Sicilian mountain was the reason why I began dreaming about cycling in the first place. From my childhood bedroom in my mothers apartment in Valletta I could always see her peak through the sky on clear days. The idea of her appearing to be so close yet still be in an entire different country adding to her mystique.
At an average gradient of 7% and a length of 18km she was far from my ideal dancing partner, her violent eruptions during which she colors the night sky a bright red, did not speak in her favor either. Still if there was one climb I gladly take the suffering from it was the Etna.
With Daphné behind me in a Golf we had rented (When I told her I was visiting my first love she got the completely wrong idea, and was now hawkeyedly babysitting me), I rode up the long winding roads. Suffering, but never too much as by now I knew the Etna her tricks very well. She was the first “HC” climb I had ever ridden on and the one I had gone up and down on the most as she was just a ferry ride away from Malta. This would be my 17th time if I was not mistaken.
It wasn’t the fight uphill I was interested in this time though. It was the Etna her descent I was coming to explore. The long straights with hairpin bends a perfect location for me to place an attack on the peloton come May. With 10km between the bottom of the Etna her descent and the finish-line this could be my best opportunity at a stage win.
Daphné made sure to record the entire climb on her dashboard cam, even the fast descent where I eventually would not be within the frame as she simply couldn’t keep up.
Yes the Etna would be where I would make my strike.
Profile of the Giro d'Italia 2015 - Stage 3.
