Night of the Champagne - Part VIII
I waited ten minutes but then decided it was no use. First love was not supposed to be that hard. There really was no point. Time to go home.
But I couldn't drive home, obviously. Despite the emotional blow from the failed date, I was able to cheer myself up. I had just won the French National Championships, who cares about some lady?
Time to party, the Henry-way!
Hey,
The first rest day is finally here. And everyone at Citigroup can use a rest day, here's why:
Vuelta a España - Stage 10 The final day before the rest day. So that gives us motivation to give everything today!
The Race
Ian Bibby had a long day ahead of him. He was facing a solo of 170 kilometers, it looked impossible to succeed.
Having him in the break put me in a good position. I floated along in the slipstream and countered many attacks when they came.
When I had missed the cut, I even made an attack myself to catch up, I had wonderful legs today!
Attack, attack, attack! Mountains, mountains, mountains! I was loving this!! This is why I became a cyclist. I'm starting to love this Vuelta more than any other race!
And our day turned perfect when the impossible became possible. Ian Bibby completed his 170km solo and wins his biggest victory ever!!!
Hearing that gave me wings. I finish within the top 10, an amazing result on a stage like this!
This was the perfect day.

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
At the first rest day, I'm content. Two top 10 places and surprisingly I'm 11th in the General Classification! I had no GC ambitions when I started this Vuelta, but I have to think about what to do now. Surely I'll have a long talk with the team coaches and the management.
I'd say Citigroup is doing well in its first Grand Tour. Ian Bibby gave us our first World Tour victory!
Thanks for being here with me in the Vuelta!
Henry

Hmm, to bad the breakaway stayed away there, would've been a very nice victory, but even a fourth place is a very good achievement.

A stage win and a Top 25 ranking doesn't exclude themselves, especially in the Vuelta. You can advance pretty good by getting time through a breakaway, if it's successful. Bid your time a bit, Henry, 3 weeks are long and you will have enough chances. Rather than to want everything at the start of it, just keep your spirits intact and ride as good as you can. The competition at this Vuelta is massive so don't be disappointed at the end!
Congratulations on the first World Tour points and the first World Tour victory for the team and Ian Bibby!

Great win by Bibby, and it looks like Vergnaud is doing very well in the GC. Maybe a top10 seems doable

A great stage win. And a possible Top 10 for Henry!
The only way to be forgiven to let Michelle down because he is too drunk

Dippofix - Thanks
Ian certainly made our Vuelta so far!
Shonak - You're very right! Henry will keep fighting in this Vuelta, as long as he's breathing
First World Tour victory does taste sweet! Especially when it's someone like Bibby getting it for us.
sutty68 - Couldn't agree more, thanks
anderspcm - Top 10 would be amazing, but I'm not sure it's doable. Given his youth, I expect a fallback in the GC over time. And I definitely don't want to conquer the Young Jersey, because I love riding around in the National Jersey you made
welker3257 - Thanks!!
duxili - He isn't that drunk... yet
thanks
I should put in a lot of hours for school today...
But it's Saturday and I'm tired of studying. So I might do some more Vuelta stages.
Everyone deserves to slack off once in a while, right?

Night of the Champagne - Part IX
The party soon came to an end when I ran into the DS. He gave me a yelling I'm not likely to ever forget, for letting myself go. Meh, he was right. A national champion can't afford to slack off like this.
I decided to go back to the hotel. I'd drive home tomorrow and start working hard on improving my abilities again! I want to be a worthy champion, not just a flash in the pan.
I opened my hotel door and dropped on the bed. What a tiresome day. I closed my eyes and relived the final kilometers. It was amazing.
Then I heard noises coming from the room next to mine.
What the hell?
I couldn't be mistaken, I had remembered her voice too well to be mistaken.
Michelle was in the room next to mine!
But...
That room...
Hey,
I report back to you once again. We're facing two difficult mountain stages, and here's what happened in the last three days:
Vuelta a España - Stage 11 This is what I've been preparing for! I've trained a long time to get a good result here!
The Race
I make a great showing and give it my all on the uphill part. Going downhill I took quite some risk, but I had to!
I was nowhere near Froome's winning time, but I finished 13th, in a time trial, in a Grand Tour!

That put me 10th in the General Classification! I couldn't believe it, seeing my name on the news later that day. (Well, by news I mean internet site, because let's face it, the Vuelta isn't making any news except maybe in Belgium.
Vuelta a España - Stage 12 A flat stage. Today and tomorrow are particularly windy, so we should be careful!
The Race
Vuelta a España - Stage 12 aka The Day of Disaster. In a 90° turn, I got cornered and hit the edge of the pavement. Off camera, I went down.
My heart skipped a beat. I was hurting pretty bad and was unable to stand up immediately. All of a sudden, nobody passed by me anymore. The peloton was gone.
I needed to get up! But I couldn't...
Two minutes later, thanks to the help of a French guy who was following the race, I got back on my bike. Six team mates were waiting for me, to bring me back.
With 6 kilometers left to go, Four had already emptied theirselves completely.
At the front, Mark Cavendish caught the breakaway in the sprint and took the victory.
But that's not important for me today. I cross the finish line more than 4 minutes behind.
I drop from 10th place to 23th...

It almost made me cry.
Thanks to the team for waiting for me, it's much appreciated.
Vuelta a España - Stage 13 Nothing exciting should happen today. But that's what I thought yesterday...
The Race
Ian Bibby got in the breakaway and increased his lead in the Mountain Classification.
The pace was high all day long. The wind made it a hard race for everyone.
One man went down. But by being unattentive, many more went down with him. Guess where I was? Yeah...
I was lucky to stay upright, but once again I was forced into the chase. Damn it!
Martens of the break thought he had this, but the poor guy never saw Peter Sagan coming...
Once again, I lost quite some time. I feel so powerless. I lost almost 10 minutes in two flat stages. I really let the team down this time.

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
Man... This really sucks. I really disappointed the team here. It's time to refocus, I think. Our main focus is try to get another stage win and keep Bibby in that jersey.
In order to try and get a stage win, I must start to ride smart. On days I don't have the best legs, I won't force myself. Firstly to save energy, secondly to take some more time. Hopefully that will allow me to strike at one day and maybe get a stage win. That would make up for everything that's happened so far, even with Michelle...
See you at the next rest day, where I'll report about the next two mountain stages,
Henry

Night of the Champagne - Part X
Julien Duvivier - young, French, talented, cyclist, team mate, cobbled specialist, time trialist, charmer, good-looking, guest in Room 25; dirty, dirty dog.
"I'll wake you up in time for your date."
Yeah, right. You motherf...
Steal my date?
And now she was in there with him.
I could kill him.
I nearly did.
Standing in front of his hotel room door, I suddenly started to think. I stood there for about five minutes before leaving. No way I could stay in the same hotel as this scumbag.
The 25th of June had left me a lonely, angry national champion.
Hey,
Two more stages. More successes for the team coming up!
Vuelta a España - Stage 14 Another mountain stage, nothing more to add!
The Race
This man deserves a statue. Ian Bibby , trying to score more mountain points, once again alone in the mountains.
He's proved his strength before and he did it again.
Ian Bibby with his second career victory, a second Vuelta stage. Time to ask for a raise, Ian!
I had good legs, but because Ian was at the front, I let it go. I took a little time so maybe I could try to breakaway one of these days, too.
When I crossed the line, Ian was just getting off the podium. We hugged. I was so happy for him, it's been a tough year for him and now, two times in the Vuelta. I couldn't be more happy!

Vuelta a España - Stage 15 The final day before the 2nd rest day. I might try something today!
The Race
Let's face it, a stage win isn't going to drop in my lap. I need to work to achieve that. I attacked from far out, because waiting for the favorites to attack is not an option!
The peloton chased us, so I attacked again.
But unfortunately, the favorites saw today as another chance of messing up the General Classification a bit. I got caught.
The rest of the stage, I already started to recover a bit. No point in going full gas now.
The battle for the GC is still incredible to watch, though. Froome and Contador don't give out presents to each other!

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
I've taken quite some time lately. Something should be possible now.
Our biggest goal now, though, is to try and keep that Mountain Jersey. Me going in a break to snatch away points can be a part of that, meanwhile I could try to snatch the victory of the day, too!
I know, I'm ambitious, but there's nothing wrong with that, right?
See you then!
Henry
Spoiler
Have to say these are important victories for me. My story writing career started with following Ian Bibby in the story by brewers90. So taking two stage wins with him makes it just great for me

Go inside and get Michelle dude! Amazing Vuelta for Ian, hope Henry will get a stage win too now. With about 35 minutes, he can try to get into breakaways and should have good shot at them.

Selwink - Yeah, he's a dog
Dippofix - Henry will have his revenge! I hope at least
Shonak - There are not many chances left, but Henry is not the kind of man to just peddle along with the peloton all day long!

A Classic Battle of Good vs. Evil - Part I
July 3rd. It's been a while since I saw Julien. I've had some time to calm down, but the problem stays the same. I can't be around a guy like that anymore.
I don't care about any contract, one of us has to go. I can't stay in the same team with him.
With the team depending much on participating in the Vuelta, both of our names are among the provisional squad. That's not going to happen.
Not something I'd usually do, I went to the team manager and tried to use my power as National Champion to cut Julien out of the selection...
Hey,
Phew, the Vuelta is finally over. I survived 3 weeks of heat, racing, bad hotels and more heat. I'm very proud of myself and the entire team. In that final week, some important things went down, so I'll let you catch up!
John-Lee Augustyn suffered a terrible crash in stage 17, being part of the break of the day.
He is still in hospital and still unconscious, after a week. The doctors say he'll wake up pretty soon, but he will never race again. At least not on a professional level.
We hope John-Lee gets well soon in the first place.
Vuelta a España - Stage 18 Sad as it is, the peloton doesn't stop. Another day, another chance. Focus. I was keen on making something of this Vuelta still.
The Race
Ballan attacked.
I was at the front and my legs felt great, so why not? Us four man (me, Ballan, Sarmiento, Brambilla ) we formed the daily breakaway.
I felt a lot of resistance in the group. With 25 kilometers left to go, our DS got this information:
Relays:
Ballan: 26%
Brambilla: 12%
Sarmiento: 16%
Vergnaud: 46%
He talked in my earpiece: "Henry, it's not good, save energy".
I know it's not good, but what can I do? If I stop doing the work, we would be caught for sure.
But I listened. I skipped a turn. Then the attacks came. I countered!
I was annoyed by their behaviour. And, luckily, I'm the kind of guy that gets stronger the more you piss me off. If that's how they wanted to play, I made the race hard!
The final climb was incredibly steep. Three of us appeared at the foot together. I dictated the tempo.
Under the red flag I had a minor lead. I was dying, it was so steep, but I had to keep going, of course.
How long can a kilometer last, seriously? Way too steep!
My heart was pounding so hart I felt it in my eyeballs, I gotta tell you. Suddenly I saw the line! My mouth was so dry. Who the hell put this mountain here? 26%, what the hell?
But it didn't matter, nothing mattered. John-Lee, buddy, this one's for you!
Aaaah... Relief! Winning Critérium International, I thought my debut year was more perfect than I ever hoped. But this, a Vuelta stage? In my first year?
No more doubt in my mind: Almost 30 years later, after Hinault, I want to be the next French rider to win the Tour de France! The road will be hard and tough, but I'm willing to do anything to achieve it!

Vuelta a España - Stage 20 The final mountain stage. Finish on the famous Angliru. Percentages of above 10000%, at least it felt like that.
My victory had given me wings. To everyone's surprise, leader Contador finally cracks under pressure from Froome .
I took him with me in my wheel for a while there. Don't be guessing for no reason. It's not bad to make some friends in the peloton, that's all.
But on the final climb, it was every man for himself. I could smell another podium and it gave me wings!
Froome wins the Vuelta here, hereby scoring the double! Tour de France and Vuelta a España. Wow!
I finish 3th on the Angliru! Amazing stage for me, I wish this Vuelta would last longer, because I'm getting stronger and stronger!

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
And so I conclude my first Grand Tour. It was great in many ways, it was tough in other ways. This was a test of my abilities and for myself I feel like I definitely succeeded. After all, 18th and a stage win on their debut is more than what most cyclists can say.
Well, Ian Bibby can say two stage wins, pretty impressive from him!
I can't wait for more, next year. Giro, Tour, Vuelta, it doesn't matter to me, I just want to taste more of those mountains!
Thanks for following throughout this Vuelta,
Henry
PS. I made the selection for the World Championships.

Sad about Augustyn, but at least a victory compensates it a little

Sad about John-Lee, but winning a stage and third on the Angliru, my oh my, what a first GT for Henry!
