@ all: solid start for sur. I hope too we can manage a win in Australia. But before moving on with this race there are some decsions to be made:
So early in the season, really? Yeap: 9 riders have no contract for next year...
Lets start with 5 older riders:
Almost to margin for progression. Except Cogburn (28 but still no progression margin) all between 30 and 31 years old. And here is what they ask for:
And last but not least, Gerdemann, he is the one with the "highest" margin of progression. So herre is the focus:
So who should I propose a contract to?
For Gerdemann, should I offer? If so 14k? 3 years?

You have to break the bank for Gerdermann, the guy has brought the team lots of success and so should be rewarded |

This is my first comment for a while but I've been following along and you've been doing amazingly!!
Some great signings and a promising start in the WT.
As for the contracts, Hold on to Gerdemann for as long as you can! 3 years Absolutely! 14k, a bargain!
As for the other 4, I'd hold off for now! None of them are riders with any real promise, and if you could possibly get 4 young gifted riders for roughly the same amount of money later in the season, then you could set yourself up much better than tying yourself down with these aging pros. |

renew Gerderman, he's still got a little bit of room for improvement, and should be rewarded for how brilliantly he's done so far and can still do a job in the WT.
as for the other 4, I'd rather see them swapped for some American's from the under 23's but if you can't find any then they are better then nothing and should only be given one year contracts if you need the extra body's after transfers/ young rider signings.

@ all: you all agree on this one I'll renew Linus for 3 years and wait to see if I can find better american riders
@ Neillster: Thanks for your comment
So let's go back to Australia and see if we can get our first win this year
Stage 4 – Flat
“We have a Mountain sprint after 35 kilometres and a Sprint 8 kilometres after. We should control the pack and have Tomas and Jurgen attack before the Mountain. Tomas gets KoM and 2nd in Sprint and Jurgen gets Sprint.”
Alberio young rider jersey and Roelandts in the points’ one, waiting for the team to control the break before the attack.
All went according the plan for both Mountain and Sprint. Then the real break is going. And the great news is that it makes it to the end with no dangerous rider as Barredo went for a solo wind at the 5 kilometre mark.
Roelandts is now the race leader.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Carlos Barredo Llamazales | Rabobank Cycling Team | 3h00'31 | 2 | Benoît Vaugrenard | Saur - Sojasun | + 36 | 3 | Timothy Roe | Bmc Racing Team | s.t. | 4 | Alexandre Pichot | GreenEdge | s.t. | 5 | Aleksejs Saramotins | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | s.t. | 12 | Tomas Alberio | AT&T | + 1'35 |
Stage 5 – Flat
“It is going to be difficult today, we have 2 hills at the end of the stage and the responsibility to control the race. No point chasing, just keep our strength and let a break win if possible”.
A dangerous break materialises and in the last hill, the Spanish Champion breaks free with Roe, both at 4’15’’ in GC but with more than 5’ lead at the top of the hill and some bonus to claim.
Fortunately they observed each other and even though Leon Sanchez wins the sprint, Garmin has reduced the gap enough to keep the GC unchanged.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | Rabobank Cycling Team | 3h15'32 | 2 | Timothy Roe | Bmc Racing Team | s.t. | 3 | Andreas Dietziker | Euskaltel - Euskadi | s.t. | 4 | Christian Knees | Saur - Sojasun | s.t. | 5 | Borut Bozic | ProTeam Astana | s.t. | 7 | Mark Cavendish | Sky ProCycling | + 2'07 | 19 | Jürgen Roelandts | AT&T | s.t. |
Stage 6 – Flat
“We are leading all 4 distinctive jerseys but with the exception of the points’ one we could loose them all on this last stage. Today is all for GC, a break as yesterday would be great, picking some points in the intermediate would certainly help a lot: Cavendish and Farrar are 4’’ down and the biggest threats, Sagan and Oss 8’’ and even Renshaw at 10’’ could win it all.”
Roedlandts wins the1st intermediate so only Cavendish and Farrar can beat him by getting the stage. Of course we let the break go. And we suffer a 1st small punch as Leon Sanchez claims the KoM.
Then Garmin rides like mad and it is going to be the final sprint who will decide this Tour Down Under. Roelandts is very well positioned in Cavendish’s wheel, until a second later he finds himself completely locked.
So we just have to pray neither Cavendish nor Farrar would win the stage. Being the top 2 sprinters in Australia, I didn’t like our chances very much.
And indeed, Farrar wins it just in front of Cavendish.
I guess it finally comes back to logic. We are still beyond expectation with 2nd and 5th overall, Points and Young classifications even if Alberio has failed for KoM, better take the Top 5 (and beat Sagan for the Young ranking)!
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Tyler Farrar | Garmin - Barracuda | 2h02'44 | 2 | Mark Cavendish | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 3 | Daniel Oss | Isd - KazMunayGas | s.t. | 4 | Leigh Howard | GreenEdge | s.t. | 5 | Juan José Haedo | Saxo Bank Sungard | s.t. | 22 | Jürgen Roelandts | AT&T | s.t. |
GC Standing
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Tyler Farrar | Garmin - Barracuda | 18h30'52 | 2 | Jürgen Roelandts | AT&T | + 3 | 3 | Mark Cavendish | Sky ProCycling | + 4 | 4 | Tiziano Dall'antonia | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 8 | 5 | Tomas Alberio | AT&T | + 9 | 6 | Daniel Oss | Isd - KazMunayGas | + 10 | 7 | Peter Sagan | Vacansoleil - Dcm Pro Cycling Team | + 14 | 8 | Mark Renshaw | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 16 | 9 | Michel Kreder | ProTeam Astana | s.t. | 10 | Francisco Jose Pacheco Torres | Movistar Team | + 17 |
Points
1 | Jürgen Roelandts | AT&T | 34 | 2 | Tomas Alberio | AT&T | 18 | 3 | Tyler Farrar | Garmin - Barracuda | 16 |
Mountain
1 | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | Rabobank Cycling Team | 56 | 2 | Tomas Alberio | AT&T | 36 | 3 | Anthony Geslin | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | 32 |
Wrap up
1/2
- Roelandts Top 5
- Alberio KoM
But with 2 in the Top 5, including a Top 3 and the Points jersey, we are in fact well beyond expectations

@ The Rider: Well Roelandts knows he has no chance in massive sprint, so he changed tactic
@ sammyt93: Hope we will get such good results all year long too
@ welker definitly a great atart of the season, I like to see JBK near the top of the WT ranking talbe, it reminds me of where we come from (though some might see it as a bug )
@ sutty We have still great hope for Jurgen, for the time being he is up to he expectations!
Let's move to our 2nd and last race for this January. Cat HC that I've learnt to love somewhere else
Objectives:
Stetina is our leader and is expected to do well:
- Overall win,
- 2 stage wins,
- KoM
Key Stages:
Stage 2 – Hilly
Big climb at the beginning then long flat, another big hill and a few kilometres flat. We got Oronte at the front and when he got a 7’ lead he began the think about it.
But the stage is long and he had to slow down a lot to see the line behind everyone is tired so leaders have to start chasing. In the last hill, Ovechkin attacks. Different shirt, same eyes of the tiger.
At last Tankink makes his move on the flat and only Fairly and Stetina can follow. We let him work a little then they counter.
First triple in the history of the team!
Stage 3 – Flat
Fairly attacks in the last hill and join the break where there is no sprinter. The pack will close the gap but not pass the break. Easy win for Fairly.
Stage 4 – Mountain
First mountain stage but not the hardest. We control the race until Masciarelli, the best climber of the race attacks. Stetina imposes a huge tempo with Ovechkin in his wheel to come back. They then stay in Masciarelli’s wheel until he is too tired Stetina attacks, Ovechkin still following. He then adapts his pace for Ovechkin to follow for a stage double.
Stage 5 – Mountain
Masciarelli is once again the stage favourite but the wind is terrible. When he attacks late in the last climb, we decide for a different tactic: Stetina comes back as quick as possible, Ovechkin doing his best to catch the duo.
He will succeed and once again Masciarelli has to lead our two climbers to the sprint for the same team double.
Stage 7 – Mountain
Masciarelli is in the middle of the bunch when the hard climb begins so I ask Fairly to accelerate. Only Ovechkin and Stetina can follow the tempo and soon enough they join the break.
Stetina takes over in the down hill to let Fairly rest before the long flat. But a small hill get the break split as only Ovechkin and Marzano can follow Stetina.
Behind the bunch has accelerated but with all the team mates out of power from the climb, the gap is stable around 2’ despite Stetina doing all the job at a gentle pace. After a while it becomes clear that Mazano is no threat and the bunch has not really reduced the gap so I ask Ovechkin to relay on the flat as he is clearly stronger.
Doing so the gap has increased to 3’ at the bottom of the last big climb. Stetina is now the only one working adapting his pace to Ovechkin’s strength. Mazano is dropped. In the bunch the other big guns attack and counter so a the end of the climb the gap has increased to almost 5’ for the 3rd identical AT&T double!
Stage 9 – Mountain
Another epic stage
Ovechkin tries to go alone at the bottom of the last climb but he has to give up when Masciarelli counters Stetina. And soon enough we got the 3 strong men at the front.
As no one wants to lead, Stetina imposes a weak tempo just to limit the number of riders at the front. In the last kilometres he accelerates strongly, Ovechkin doing his best to stay in his wheel finish 2nd for yet another double.
Stage 10 – Flat
Flat yes but almost 200 kilometres. The plan is to get the pack grouped with 90 kilometres to go and have Fairly to attack, he is strong in flat and stamina so he will be hard to chase. We do just this but the sprinters’ team react immediately after Fairly’s attack. After Loutit has attacked to force the team to continue working, Ovechkin breaks free with 8 kilometres to go. So he could pick a last win to celebrate his overwhelming Tour of Langkawi!
Classifications
Stage 1 | Edoardo Girardi | Acqua & Sapone | Stage 2 | Artem Ovechkin | AT&T | Stage 3 | Caleb Fairly | AT&T | Stage 4 | Peter Stetina | AT&T | Stage 5 | Peter Stetina | AT&T | Stage 6 | Davide Ricci Bitti | Kspo | Stage 7 | Peter Stetina | AT&T | Stage 8 | Edoardo Girardi | Acqua & Sapone | Stage 9 | Peter Stetina | AT&T | Stage 10 | Artem Ovechkin | AT&T |
Final GC
1 | Artem Ovechkin | AT&T | 39h31'06 | 2 | Peter Stetina | AT&T | + 24 | 3 | Francesco Masciarelli | Acqua & Sapone | + 12'16 | 4 | Bram Tankink | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | + 13'04 | 5 | Blaz Furdi | Subway Cycling Team | + 13'16 | 6 | Francesco Failli | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | + 16'08 | 7 | Sergej Fuchs | Bank Bgz | + 23'58 | 8 | Caleb Fairly | AT&T | + 24'35 | 9 | Marco Marzano | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | s.t. | 10 | Eric Drower | PureBlack Racing | + 25'02 |
Points – Ovechkin
Mountain – Stetina
Wrap up
3/3
- Overall win, plus 2nd plus Top 10!
- 2 stage wins, 7 out of 10!
- KoM plus Points!
I thought we were ambitious but apparently not enough. I would have expected more of a fight from Masciarelli.

@ sutty & welker: even too easy But I bet next WT race will be a different story
Because Paris - Nice is coming indeed. With almost no preparation but the cat 1
Not a bad result for Poels:
1 | Samuel Horstmann | Price Your Bike | 4h42'57 | 2 | Gasper Svab | Sava | s.t. | 3 | Michel Kreder | ProTeam Astana | s.t. | 4 | Wout Poels | AT&T | s.t. | 5 | Tristano Pascuzzo | Acqua & Sapone | s.t. |
But before moving to Paris-Nice, let's discuss contract renewal:
Here are the details of the 4 "younger" riders asking to be renewed:
So should I offer a contract to any of them? If so How much (Duration / Amount) ?

@ all: waooo another consensus let's do this and get Loutit a new contract.
Now moving to one of my favorite race:
The Objectives
- Overall Top 5 with Poels,
- 1 stage or KoM with anyone
The Main Riders
Sagan, Uran, Valverde, Roche, Scarponi, Voeckler, Moreno, Mollema, Le Mevel, Greipel, Vanendert, Anton, Cunego, Martin
Our Team
Wout Poels, Jurgen Roelandts, Jonathan Castroviejo, Caleb Fairly, Alastair Loutit, Sean Mazich
Stage 1 – Flat
No real suspense as no break got any significant gap. Except Chainel who is creating a nice break in the final. He is going to start the mass sprint with a nice advantage.
Roelandts is in the right wheels following Sagan but he looses it at the wrong time and could never recover.
Stage ranking
1 | Peter Sagan | Vacansoleil - Dcm Pro Cycling Team | 3h31'40 | 2 | Tony Gallopin | Saur - Sojasun | s.t. | 3 | Steve Chainel | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 4 | Borut Bozic | ProTeam Astana | s.t. | 5 | André Greipel | Bmc Racing Team | s.t. | 6 | Andrea Guardini | RadioShack - Nissan - Trek | s.t. | 7 | Matthew Harley Goss | Isd - KazMunayGas | s.t. | 8 | Francisco Jose Ventoso Alberdi | Movistar Team | s.t. | 9 | Jürgen Roelandts | AT&T | s.t. | 10 | Samuel Dumoulin | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | s.t. |
Stage 2 – Flat
The break was more serious today with 13 men including strong flat riders. We ask Castroviejo to participate to the chase led by BMC (Greipel) and Vancansoleil (Sagan). With 1’30 and 20 km to go it looks like we’re going to have a mass sprint.
But the break accelerates and the gap is still 1’ with 10 kilometres to go. With 4 kilometre and 40’’ it looks like they finally gonna make it.
From bad to worse, Roelandts has chosen Sagan’s wheel but it is Greipel’s train that is the strongest.
No regret as the break will hold if with no time gap. Sagan sill in yellow for… 0’’!
Stage ranking
1 | Joost Van Leijen | Lotto - Belisol | 4h30'36 | 2 | Francisco Jose Pacheco Torres | Movistar Team | s.t. | 3 | Jeremy Hunt | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 12 | André Greipel | Bmc Racing Team | s.t. | 19 | Wout Poels | AT&T | s.t. |
Stage 3 – Flat
At the end of the day Roelandts gets no chance in the massive sprint. Brillant win for Sagan!
Stage ranking
1 | Peter Sagan | Vacansoleil - Dcm Pro Cycling Team | 5h35’56 | 2 | Borut Bozic | ProTeam Astana | s.t. | 3 | Andre Greipel | Radioshack – Nissan – Trek | s.t. | 11 | Jurgen Roelandts | AT&T | s.t. |
Stage 4 – Hills
First important stage for the GC. No surprise as strong riders got into the break including Capecchi and Fredrigo.
It got even more dangerous when Kolobnev and Van Avermaet join them. And unfortunately no one is chasing so we have to ride. But it soon become clear than the break will win it. And Kolobnev gets a well deserved solo win with leader jersey as a bonus.
After some attacks and counters a big group of 33 riders arrive 2’30 later. All the favourites are in. Poels is the only AT&T rider in it.
Stage ranking
1 | Alexandr Kolobnev | Katusha Team | 5h09'33 | 2 | Enrico Gasparotto | ProTeam Astana | + 59 | 3 | Greg Van Avermaet | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | + 1'41 | 4 | Pierrick Fédrigo | Française des Jeux - Bonjour | s.t. | 5 | Peter Sagan | Vacansoleil - Dcm Pro Cycling Team | + 2'28 | 28 | Wout Poels | AT&T | s.t. |
