Well the tour of Turkey has finally reached us, this is the big shot for Yildiz who will be our leader. If all goes pear shaped for him we have race no.1 Bakelants. We will give plenty of support for Yildiz, in this tour which can be won by sprinters, but we recognise it will be a big ol' challenge with quality sprinters such as Kummer, Tanner, Howard and Peyre all present.
Stage 1 is about as flat as it gets in Turkey and is definitely one for the sprinters.
Early on many riders tried to get away, as a result many riders were intent on bringing back the breaks, including our Qatari champ Al Zaid and Australian champ Meyer, who seems to be more of a domestique now, for Dual Temp.
The full break of the day containing 10 riders including Cummings and Valentin Iglinskiy got away with 50 kilometres to go with a torrential downpour as the backdrop.
Yildiz wasn't felling great today, he prefers the hot stuff, nevertheless we had Neirynck protecting him ensuring he would be in a decent position should there be a mass sprint.
Farnese Vini then Cantabria Infinita took the chase, the break never amassing more than 2:30 of an advantage on the stage. The break was caught with 9 kilometres to go by the R.L.M lead peloton working for fast French man Rudolphe Peyre, on his wheel was our 'big Turk' Yildiz.
Peyre finished off the great leadout work by Passeron and Sinner for the win, Nankervis and Sanz (who crashed inside the last 40 kilometres) did brilliantly and surprised to finish on the days podium. Yildiz didn't have his best day, flagging in the end, but finished right up there in 6th and I believe he will get better as the tour progresses and the weather clears, fingers crossed.

J.J.Rojas justified his position as race favourite by winning the Vuelta a la Rioja. Freire tells me it looked really unlikely that the win was going to happen 9 kilometres to go when early break away rider Roldan had 2:00 of an advantage with the terrain mostly flat.
However, attacks by the lead group, in particular from Dodi, closed down the gap compounded the fatigue Roldan must have suffered (it apparently took 100 kilometres for the break to form) on the real hilly stage. Rojas followed all the major attacks ensuring he stayed towards the front and no one was going to stop him from claiming his third win of the month. WIN FOR QATAR OPTICS!

@ Ian Butler Thanks, always nice to get in the top 10 at the start of a stage race.
There are some lumps at the beginning of the stage and some small lumps towards the finish but this stage is for the flat out sprinters.
A seven man break got away today, Suzuki would be first rider to move into the KOM jersey after summiting on the only categorised climb of the day first. With the peloton geared up and many teams willing to ride the break never had much chance.
The peloton caught the break with 9 kilometres to go. With 2 kilometres to go five riders attack including our man Yildiz (which was a good move as he was out of position for a sprint)... however the domestiques of RLM don't let this move succeed.
Leader Peyre launches his sprint early and Belletti and Sanz are coming up fast but he timed his effort very well and takes his second win of the tour. Yildiz does well to hang on for 10th.
This is a really hilly stage with a lot of climbing in the first half, some steep climbs towards the finish with an 8 kilometre descent to the finish line in Marmaris.
There were plenty of early attacks with riders rightfully thinking a break might make it to the finish, with 80% of riders under 1:00 on GC.
Eventually a 14 man break formed. Over the climbs which started 50 kilometres into the race the domestqiues of Farnese Vini (Parinello and Agarkov) were riding a 'tempo' which caused all of our riders to suffer, I hope that team is riding 'au natural', Bakelants was on a real bad day today from early on.
With 50 kilometres to go the combination of crosswinds and the climbs mean that a good 40 riders are dropped from the peloton, sadly for us this means race favourite Bakelants is dropped. We have Neirynck still protecting Yildiz in the front group.
With 25 kilometres to go the break have 3:00 when Chiarini, Eckmann and a host of others start attacking vastly reducing the gap.
With 11 kilometres to go the break is caught, McLeod(Dukla) gives it one last go and Chiarini counters and attacks on the descent to create a gap back to a smaller group and the peloton.
Chiarini holds off the peloton and claims yet another win for Farnese Vini. Peyre retains the leaders jersey whilst Yildiz finishes in the lead group. Bakelants lost a lot of time, hopefully he will be allowed to get into a break.
In the Turkish heat, with over 3000 meters of climbing, this stage is a real killer although the last 50 kilometres are mostly downhill.
Racing was frantic with many riders trying to form a break, 7 riders would make the break today. Modolo would take the max points at all checkpoints but McLeod would consolidate his KOM jersey lead.
The peloton looked to be controlling the break well over the lumpy and at time really harsh terrain. With 50 kilometres to go the break have around 3:30 but with 30 kilometres to go the break have held well on the descent and have around 3:10.
Many riders were out the rear of the peloton suffering from a variety of circumstances.
The break was victorious. Modolo takes the win and moves into the GC lead with a commanding lead. Yildiz finished well for us in the main bunch. Whereas all of our middle east contingent climbed off the bikes really struggling and would not start the next day of racing.
A consecutive day of over 3000 meters of climbing beckons, the stage starting with a 25 kilometre slog of a climb. Towards the finish it is mostly downhill with short steep hills.
It was nice to see Neirynck receive some Belgian hill side support as he attacked to become one of the 7 riders to form the break of the day, we were down to 5 riders already due to withdrawals, so why not send a man into the break.
Everyone was suffering today, all three of the race favourites were dropped from a 48 man group with 100 kilometres to go, thanks to domestiques they would regain contact on the descent.
The peloton always looked to have the break under control from 100 kilometres to go when the gap was at 8:00 to the break, however, with 30 kilometres to go the peloton were running out of able domestiques, Team WIT looked as if they were spent and other teams didn't want to protect Modolo's GC lead.
With 15 kilometres to go Samoilau (Meji) attacks from the break he quickly gains '25 seconds of a gap on the drags, but the stage is not over. One man Travis Meyer (Dual Temp) sets about riding a strong tempo in the aim of tracking him down.
Riders fall off the pace one by one, until one man is left on the wheel.... Neirynck. Our man is really suffering, unable to contribute to the pace setting as Samoilau is caught with 3 kilometres to go. All three riders are 1:33 or so down on GC and whoever wins the stage will likely move into the GC lead as the peloton is flagging.
Neirycnk has virtually nothing left but after not leaving the wheel of Meyer for 13 kilometres comes out and takes the win in the last 100 meters. WIN FOR QATAR OPTICS. Perhaps not the most dominant or chivalrous of victories but if Nierynck rode to his maximum that is all I can ask.
The time gaps ended up being substantial back to the back so Neirynck will be the new GC leader and will don the turquoise jersey. But defending the jersey will be difficult with only four riders to support him combined with the fatigue he must be suffering after an agonising day in the saddle.

A stage for the sprinters however, this is probably hard enough to cause plenty of fractures in the peloton and will be the last major chance for the GC to change hands.
This stage could have the tagline of 'US vs the Peloton' as it seemed the teams were working against us. Many riders tried to get into the break of the day, we were massively fortunate in that C.S.Long had great legs today and he was crucial in closing down the early breaks.
With 100 kilometres to go there was no break when Iglinksiy (Astana) and Merino (Avianca), both were at 2:33, attacked. With 75 kilometres to go they had pulled out a huge advantage of 7:30, we up the tempo with no one helping....
Larsson doesn't last long for us and is the first rider to peel off the chase. With 48 kilometres to go the peloton reaches the last severe climb of the tour (with 5 kilometres in length) at really steep gradients. We have all our riders riding on the front for Neirynck.
Bakelants comes to the front and the gap immediately tumbles down a minute from 4:30 to 3:30, but he puts the whole peloton in difficulty, Neirycnk continues to struggle on whilst teams Meji and Cyclevox bewilderingly interrupt the chase.
With 35 kilometres to go Bakelants and Yildiz are on the front the gap at 3:30 when we FINALLY get some help from the sprinter teams SES Astra and Roubaix Lille Metropole, two really professional teams.
There would be a sprint despite the break being joined by Merino's teammate Rodrigues 20 kilometres from the finish. Passeron and super fast man Peyre create a gap of around '5 seconds with around about 800 meters to go, Peyre grabs another stage victory finishing off the great work, proving he is the fastest at this tour of Turkey.
Neirycnk really struggled and almost gets tailed off towards the finish, but with two relative flat stages to go the hardest obstacles may have been overcome.

Puncheurs being favourites is misleading, the stage contains short steep hills but is one for the sprinters. Only the weakest riders left in the race will be dropped.
We were very thankful we had Long and Larsson in our team who did an excellent effort in bringing back multiple large early break attempts. With 90 kilometers to go there was no break.
With 63 kilometres to go a four man break was established, the best placed rider was 4:10 down and that was Doi (Nippo).
We were not concerned with the stage win we just wanted top protect Stijn's GC lead. With 40 kilometres to go we begin to ride as the break have 5:00. With a bit of help from RLM it became clear that Doi was never going to challenge for the GC lead but the break would fight out the win.
With 15 kilometres tog Cummings attacked, Bauer gets dropped but De Negri rides a steady tempo up to his wheel with Doi.
The three would fight out the sprint, De Negri was the fastest and takes the win. The peloton catch Bauer 1'37 down on the stage winner, a successful day for our team defending Stijn's jersey.
The tour of Turkey ends on a stage for the sprinters, allegedly. The race finishes with four laps around Alanya which includes a 4 kilometre hill with an average gradient of 8%.
After a 7 man break got away, the best rider 4:00 down, RLM were willing to chase from 50 kilometres to go as everyone has to traverse the steep hill.
Everything looks in control until ...... 18 kilometres to go and Samoilau attacks, he is less than '20 down on GC. He immediately gets a gap of '20 approaching the final climb of the day, Yildiz drills it on the peloton before Bakelants takes over.
The break are caught on the climb with 11 kilometres to go as Chiarini attacks out of the peloton. Bakelants sets pace as the summit approaches, Neirynck really struggling. A group of 12 riders get clear, Bakelants waits up for Neirnck WHO IS DROPPED... but on the descent he bridges across completely empty to the head of the race thanks to Bakelants, we will win the tour of Turkey if he stays upright!
Cyclevox takes the victory thanks to Veilleux, and we win the tour of Turkey, a great result for the team and for Stijn, who ordinarily races single day races. We showed a great team performance , Stijn will be the first to admit without the team riding he certainly wouldn't have taken the win.
Meyer gets the consolation prize of the KOM jersey whilst out of nowhere Sanz takes the points jersey despite three stage wins for Peyre. What a race, what a moment for the team. I now have 25 days off or so until the next race (I won't be covering the team's two races in the maiden trip to Scandanavia) I will be covering.. that time will be split back in Belgium and traversing Asia.

Some pleasant surprises at the tour of Turkey mean we stay in contact with the front runners. Without a doubt winning the one day races and placing high in stage races has been the key to success for FDJ and Farnese Vini and has been a key reason behind the prominance of Colnago.
After I spent a few days in Belgium with Jun I jetted out to Qatar to help out in the running of the cycle centres of which there are currently five, located at:
- Al Jasrah
-An Najmah
-As Salatah
-As Sawq
and Doha which is five times larger than the others and includes a velodrome. The primary function of the centres is to encourage cycling in Qatar, organise races and training regimes and post fitness results etc.
I was really impressed with the centre I visited on the outskirts of Doha, people coming to the centre has increased all the time, no doubt helped by the presence of our riders who use the centre as a base. I ensured that psychologists, dieticians and weight training equipment would be at hand for users in the near future.
Everything was going well as I set off to Hong Kong where I would be present at the opening of a cycling centre, all funded by Qatar Optics of course.

It was official, Qatar Optics had now set up a cycling centre in Hong Kong similar to the setup underway in Doha. Rojas had the honour of cutting the ribbon to signify the opening of the centre in front of hundreds of onlookers.
The centre in Hong Kong aims to encourage cycling in the wider east Asian region, links from the centre are being created in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia as well as Mongolia (where me, Rojas, Al Zaid, Izagirre and De Waele) will be visiting next week.
Who knows maybe in a year of two riders from the before mentioned countries will be riding for Qatar Optics.
