Stage 17
Stage 17 already, and perhaps the second-to-last chance for the sprinters. They will have to survive the short climb in the end though. The GC-men will save their legs today and thus a break might also stand a chance.
****John Degenkolb
***Matthew Goss, Philippe Gilbert
**Mark Cavendish, Tony Gallopin, Daniele Ratto
*Andre Greipel, Roberto Ferrari, Daniele Bennati, Elia Viviani

Caravaggio - Vicenza
The final stage before the mountains arise, and with the climb in the end, it could be anything. The GC-riders will probably save some energy though. This probably means there will be a battle between the sprinters and the break. We join you with 60 kms to ride. A break of 5 riders is ahead: Ochoa (Androni), Gallopin (Radioshack), Hoogerland (Vacansoleil), Gusev (Katusha) and Pelucchi (IAM). They have had a max lead of 7min58, but it now is 4min04.
The pack is lead by Omega Pharma, Orica and Argos.
We have already had both intermediate sprints. At sprint 1, a small group that wasnt the break of the day, was ahead. Gusev beat Hoogerland.
We had no battle at sprint 2, where Gallopin was 1st and Gusev 2nd.
At the foot of the climb, 25kms from the line, the gap is still 1min50.
At the top of the climb, Gallopin beats Hoogerland. The gap to the pack is 1min35. The gap with the rest of the break is 20 seconds.
With 10kms left, the reunited break is reeled in.
With 3kms left, we have 3 sprint trains.
Going in the final kilometer, Cavendish is still in the lead, but Farrar and Bennati come out of the wheel.
At the line
Farrar wins! 2nd is Cavendish, 3rd Bennati, 4th Ferrari, 5th Goss. No significant changes in any GC.

Steegmans did a horrible lead-out, as Cav was already in front with 1.6kms to go. Farrar got a real edge, but Cav came closer the sooner the riders approached the line. Glad you dont mind

Stage 18
The first mountaineous stage in the sequence of the final 3 mountain stages. This is an odd mountain stage though: its a time trial. This time trial should give a good indication who is the best climber though and thus who might win the maglia rosa in the end.
****Ryder Hesjedal
***Chris Froome, Alberto Contador
**Vincenzo Nibali, Michele Scarponi, Alejandro Valverde
*Robert Gesink, Domenico Pozzovivo, Thomas de Gendt, Ivan Basso

Mori - Polsa
Welcome to the mountaineous TT. This TT should give a good indication about who is the best climber and the favorite for the maglia rosa. We join you just when the top10 is about to start. The fastest time so far is from Andrew Talansky: 45:24
Ivan Basso is the first of the top 10 to start.
Pozzovivo is the next.
De Gendt is next to start.
Then we have Robert Gesink.
Vincenzo Nibali
Alejandro Valverde
With the start of Michele Scarponi we approach the podium.
Of that podium, the first to start is Contador.
Then runner-up Hesjedal
And at last leader Froome.
Basso finishes with a time of 44min27, 5 seconds slower than current leader Van Garderen.
Pozzovivo finishes at 8 seconds from Basso and 13 from Van Garderen.
De Gendt also fails in setting the best time. He loses 17 seconds to Van
Garderen.
Gesink sets a new best time: 44min16.
Nibali crushes that time with 43min50.
Valverde is current 3rd, 29 seconds from Nibali.
Scarponi loses 19 seconds to Nibali.
Contador sets the new best time at 43min30.
Hesjedal takes a 43min08, the new best!
Froome is just 11 seconds ahead before the TT, where he loses 19 seconds.
This means Hesjedal will take over the maglia rosa! No further major changes in the GC. Blanco extends its lead a little in the team classification.
