So Lampre - Merida has signed Joxean Fernandez Matxin as a sporting director. I wonderd if he is credible and what others can say about him?

I know he worked last time with Geox in 2011.

Not credible at all. I find it quite bad news that he's found a job in pro cycling again. But hey, he's quite a nice guy, so it's something.

Ok. Thanks, but what makes you say he's not credible. Has he had any doping connections before?

I'm just wondering. Maybe Isso knows more.

Apparently people have been caught but are yet to be named. Could be a story to watch, with the way people have lost weight ans gained endurance in cycling, not naming any names...

Mmm, question : do those people climb marginally less well than, say, one year ago ?

Less ironically, who's overweight this year in the pro peloton ?

Obviously I'm not isso, but according to his Spanish wikipedia page, he's been at the team known as Saunier-Duval from 2004 to 2011.

During that time they've had quite their share of doping cases (see the discussion about Mazur), they had Ricco, Simoni, Piepoli, and truckload of riders who tested positive or miraculously avoided it (Cobo@Vuelta2011, anyone ?).

I wouldn't overwhelm a D.S. for one random positive case in his team, but that team has had such a history through the years, and he was there all along.
He's just no credibility whatsoever regarding doping.

Lampre hired him ? It's not like they have more credibility in that area either...

Ok. Some serious connections then (indirect atleast).

He wasn't just a DS, he ran the team, more so than owner Gianetti. Think Guercilena at Radioshack right now

Does not get much worse than hiring Matxín

2011 was the year Cobo won the Vuelta for Geox. I've always found that victory suspicious.

Riders at Saunier Duval aka Fuji aka Geox caught in positive tests or investigations during Matxín's management:
- Alberto Fernández
- Koldo Gil
- Ruben Lobato
- Iban Mayo
- Manuele Mori
- Leonardo Piepoli
- Riccardo Riccò
- Ricardo Serrano
- Carlos Zárate

And that's not even counting the guys who tested positive immediately after leaving the team (Ventoso, Passeron and someone else I can't remember)

The infamous Ibarguren was at the team from 2006 onwards (when they started being good)

Pat McQuaid filmed with a secret camera on a French documentary stated that Verbruggen always defended the sport above and beyond dealing with doping in peloton. No news but for it coming from McQuaid and being caught on camera. Will post the source when I'm off the (masquerading as a) "smart" phone.

Strangely stating the bleeding obvious may weaken his position in the UCI/old boys club more than anything else?

Also further highlights the obvious conflict of interests between promoting and policing at the same time.

And, if we look at all the rider's result's while riding for Saunier-Duval and after, we see that there is a huge diference.

Interesting interview on the story behind the victory of Dan Martin yesterday. Apparently he wasn't necessarilly going to go with the break but Movistar struggling and Wiggo puncturing changed his mind - glad it did!

Only named a few because I couldn't be bothered naming the rest. I didn't know about Lithgart though?

wait what? they all got caught using dope, or are you just saying that Vacansoleil is the new Rabobank

kumazan
I don't think they have a team wide doping system à la Rabobank, but you don't need to be a genius to figure out Vacansoleil is not the most ethical team around.

Ligthart and Bole are new names in this context to me. Are they "just" involved in investigations or is there some history I don't know about?

Bole was named in USADA report last Autumn, and he used to be close to Petacchi, who's been named in more doping scandals than I could name (and I could name many).

First time I'm reading about Lithgart as well, but I can't claim knowing much about him anyway.

I can't believe I just spent another 30 minutes trying to find sources to back up someone else's statements again.

Of course they are all dopeheads, even the slightest bit of circumstantial evidence proves that they've done so their entire carreer. /sarcasm.

I've posted before that I'm a Vacansoleil fan so I'm not going to defend them further because it will only make me look like a hypocrite. What has happened, happened.

About the team ethics, it doesn't really matter to me. You a have team that opts for a signed zero-tolerance policy but yet they currently produce results that are litterally unbelievable and not credible. Then there's a team where all the 100% busted dopeheads go because according to them, a policy of forgiveness is obviously more ethical. Then there's Vacansoleil, a team that gives riders a second chance when they are implicated but not proven to have doped (except their fail on Ricco), which carries no tainted doctors to my knowledge, and which doesn't perform remarkably in any way.

To each his own. Feel free to jump to conclusions.
