Wow, Skoda-Orlen is all over the top 10Smile This will change probably in the next week or two, but great start. And a pity with Bole, Marcato was powered by the home crowd probably...
I'll be back

Giro d'Italia Stage 7 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0036.jpg
Favourites: Evans, Anton, Cunego, Gesink, Nibali

Here we are then, the first stage that should see the GC guys to the fore. We have to keep Peter up there today, or else we might as well go home. The finishing climb is not steep at all, but at 14km, it is long. The standings should be very different tonight and, unfortunately, I don't think we will have six riders up there anymore!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-5.jpg
Today's breakaway originally contained 11 riders, including the red jersey of Farrar and his main rival Petacchi, as well as Allan Davis, Zaugg and Van de Walle. This quickly became 10 riders as P. Locatelli (Colnago) could not hang on as soon as they went uphill.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-4.jpg
Over the categorised climb, the group shattered as you would expect. Zaugg was first over, followed by Caruso and Van de Walle. Their gap over the peloton at this point was seven minutes.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-4.jpg
Once the race had calmed down after the fast descent, the front group had just four riders in it now. They were Caruso (Liquigas), Zaugg (Radioshack), Van de Walle (Lotto) and Elissonde (FDJ). The other six were gradually sliding back to the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0005-4.jpg
At this point, two of the biggest losers from a hectic first week, Garzelli and Cataldo decided to give it a go together. They quickly rode past Vandenbergh from the original break and set about catching the front group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0006-3.jpg
But as soon as they hit the final climb, they were back in the peloton as Androni's fast pace was causing all sorts of problems in the bunch. They clearly knew something about Rujano that nobody else did. As you can see, Szmyd was right at the front looking after Velits.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0007-3.jpg
And with exactly 10km to go, the final two riders Caruso and Zaugg were caught by the peloton. Behind, Konig had to admit defeat in his battle to keep the white jersey as he slipped out the back along with Bole, Grivko, Chuzhda and Kozubek. It was all down to Velits now.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0008-4.jpg
With 5km to go, the first attack was launched and it was Cunego who kicked first. The only rider interested in following at this point was Rujano. Velits increased his pace, but, along with the other team leaders, he would wait till later to go.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0009-3.jpg
In the end, Cunego's attack was the only one that really worked as he took the victory today 10 seconds ahead of Anton. The rest of the favourites finished nine seconds after Igor, with Velits in sixth. Unfortunately, Oroz was also in there and so hangs on to the Maglia Rosa.

Team Summary
That was a decent day, ruined only by the fact that Oroz held on, so we still don't get that Maglia Rosa. Also, Konig loses the white jersey, but he can now return to his domestique role. Peter was brilliant on that final climb, but it wasn't particularly difficult, so we're not that surprised. Tomorrow's stage has an evil climb at the end, where there will probably be some bigger gaps at the finish. Maybe a breakaway attempt is in order tomorrow now that everybody's lost some time on GC. There was one further withdrawal today, and it was quite a big one. Yesterday's stage winner Marco Marcato fractured his hand in a heavy fall on an early descent. He won't be denying us stage wins anymore.

Good result! Beating Cunego in a hilly stage in the Giro is almost impossible...

@sutty and lokytrew, I know but Oroz is a decent rider and his team are riding for him, so it will be very difficult to overtake him. Especially when people like Mollema, Gesink and Cunego are just behind ready to pounce aswell. Frown

@dienblad, yep, I think Cunego will get quite a few wins in this Giro. Several stages, including the next one, have got his name all over them! Could get repetitive. Rolling Eyes

That´s indeed a pity to fail Maglia Rosa by 26 seconds. But it´s still a great Giro up to here. Keep it up, you´ll your chances Wink

Giro d'Italia Stage 8 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0037.jpg
Favourites: Evans, Anton, Cunego, Gesink, Nibali

After yesterday's warm-up, today marks the first really difficult finish. The final climb is just 8km, but the average gradient is over 7% and there are sections at over 13%. All of the favourites will be at it today, so Peter will have to do his best. The stage is also very, very long, so it will be a horrendous stage for all but the strongest riders. I predict that the GC will look very different tonight.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-6.jpg
With the stage being so long, there weren't too many people willing to ride out front for over 200km. Hence, only six riders went on the attack at the start. They were Elissonde (FDJ), Wegmann (Garmin), Beppu (GreenEdge), Vanotti (Liquigas), Van der Sande (Lotto) and Petacchi (Lampre).

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-5.jpg
Behind, the pace in the peloton was virtually non-existent on the long, first climb. The gap was already out to five minutes at the summit. Everybody was settling in for a very long day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-5.jpg
With Van der Sande long gone, Wegmann was the next rider to be dropped from the breakaway. The remaining four were working well together, albeit Beppu was hanging on at the back when they went uphill.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0004-3.jpg
But behind, the hordes of BMC and Androni were not going to let the breakaway succeed, which was quite surprising, given that none of the BotD were within 20 minutes of the Maglia Rosa. Evans and Rujano were obviously dreaming of the stage win.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0005-5.jpg
As the weather had significantly changed, there was always the possibility of crashes on the descents, and you can always rely on Euskaltel for crashes. It was Anton who went down but he got back up and was paced back to the peloton, just, by the white jersey of Izagirre.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0006-4.jpg
Before the final climb, Van den Broeck tried a very ambitious attack that never looked like working as he struggled to pull away from the Androni-driven peloton on the flat. However, once the final climb came, he started to slowly, but surely, pull away.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0007-4.jpg
On one of the easier parts of the final climb, the chase was on as Rujano, Evans, Pozzovivo and Basso went after Van den Broeck. Velits was struggling with the high pace, but maintained his own rhythm and was with some strong riders in what was left of the peloton.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0008-5.jpg
And surprisingly, it was the tiny Venezuelan, Rujano who outsprinted Basso and Evans to take the stage and, indeed, the Maglia Rosa. Fantastic result for Androni. Just behind were Pozzovivo, Cunego, Scarponi and Van den Broeck.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0009-4.jpg
Meanwhile, Peter finished tenth, leading home a group containing Anton, Rogers, Gesink and Mollema. A strong performance which keeps him in the top five overall. Kiserlovski and Szmyd came home in the top 30 aswell.

Team Summary
Today showed us what we can realistically hope to achieve in this Giro. Peter was nowhere near the likes of Evans, Rujano and Basso, but a top ten is definitely possible here if he has good days in the big stages. Unfortunately, the Maglia Rosa has gone now and I don't think we'll be wearing that this year but it's time to focus on what is realistic now. Hanging on in the top ten. And that blasted stage win! Back on to easier terrain tomorrow for everybody, apart from the four riders who didn't make the time limit today. None of them were big names, the highest profile being young Aussie, Luke Durbridge. 190 riders remain.

Giro d'Italia Stage 9 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0038.jpg
Favourites: Farrar, Petacchi, Galimzyanov, Ventoso, Davis

Today's stage is one that will almost certainly be used as a rest day, but with the chances for the sprinters running out, it would be stupid of the sprinters' teams to let the breakaway win. We won't be going for the break today, as we are waiting for the tougher stages. Hopefully Bozic can have a good day.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-7.jpg
An early breakaway of nine riders attempted to get clear of the peloton. Most of the riders were second-division sprinters and classics riders, but they all got brought back after more riders tried to join them.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-6.jpg
After this, a big group did get away, containing 14 riders. All of the nine riders from the earlier attempt were in it, with the highest placed on GC being Vandewalle (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), way over half an hour down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-6.jpg
The peloton let the break get six minutes clear before Garmin and Lampre returned to action for their sprinters. They brought the gap down to a minute, but the hills near the end of the stage slowed them down and the breakaway would just make it today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0004-4.jpg
The surprising winner from the break was Kristof Vandewalle, who, despite being one of the worst sprinters in the group, was quick enough to see off Modolo, Ignatiev, Phinney and Houanard. The sprint for 15th was won by Ventoso, with all of our riders safely in the bunch.

I forgot to export the results, Rolling Eyes but obviously, there were no major changes to the overall standings. The peloton came in 48 seconds after the breakaway and only three riders didn't finish in the bunch, none of them being big names.

Team Summary
We were hoping to get a good result with Bozic today, but the breakaway surviving ruined that. Nevertheless, today was a good rest day for all of the riders as we edge ever nearer to those horrendous mountains.

Giro d'Italia Stage 10 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0039.jpg
Favourites: Evans, Cunego, Anton, Gesink, Bole

This stage is classed as hilly as the finish is placed at the top of a short hill, but it won't see any changes on the GC as that final climb is only 5km with an average gradient of under 4%. Hopefully both Bole and Velits can get up there today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-8.jpg
After an early breakaway attempt, including Chuzhda, failed to establish itself, a group of seven riders did succeed in getting away. They were Van der Sande (Lotto), Petacchi (Lampre), Impey (GreenEdge), Bonnet (FDJ), Fenn (Omega Pharma), Ignatiev (Katusha) and Bouet (AG2R).

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-7.jpg
There were three teams doing the work at the head of the peloton today, Lampre, BMC and Euskaltel, who have the three favourites for today's stage. They brought the gap down from 8:00 to 2:00 just after the categorised climb near the end.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-7.jpg
With the breakaway looking like they would be caught, it was Ignatiev, unsurprisingly, who went for it. Only Fenn tried to go with him, but couldn't stay with the Russian for long. As the other six riders were caught by the peloton, Ignatiev hit the final rise with under a minute's advantage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0004-5.jpg
But it wasn't to be for Ignatiev as he was caught with 3km to go. Under the flamme rouge, it was Anton leading out the sprint, ahead of Cunego and Rogers. Velits was trying to lead out Bole, but as the Slovenian launched his sprint, he was blocked, and that was the end of that.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0005-7.jpg
And Anton JUST held on with Evans coming unbelievably quickly on his left. If the line had been 50m further, the Aussie would have took it. Cunego got third, with Velits 9th and Bole 16th. Almost everyone got the same time, so only the time bonuses make a difference today.

Team Summary
A very quiet day again for the team, with Bole being blocked in when having a great shot at a top five today. Still, with Velits finishing in the top ten and keeping his place in the top five with the mountains approaching, we have to be satisfied.

Giro d'Italia Stage 11 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0040.jpg
Favourites: Farrar, Petacchi, Ventoso, Galimzyanov, Davis

This is the longest stage of the race at a mammoth 243km, so the final few kilometres will be a struggle for the weaker riders in the peloton. It should be another bunch sprint though, so we'll be hoping for better from Bozic.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0001-9.jpg
Today's breakaway formed with fully 235km to go so they clearly had confidence or they were slightly mental! There were six riders, made up of Roulston (Radioshack), Barry (Sky), Bookwalter (BMC), Reynes (Lotto), Tosatto (Saxo Bank) and Houanard (AG2R).

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0002-8.jpg
They built up a lead of twelve minutes before Garmin, Lampre and Movistar started to pull them back. As they go through the intermediate sprint, the gap was down to nine minutes.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0003-8.jpg
On the one categorised climb, the gradient hit a devilish 20% as the team kept Velits out of trouble. The gap to the leaders was down to five minutes at the top, with Movistar now making most of the pace on their own. Behind, 40 riders went out the back, including 8th placed Oroz, the former Maglia Rosa. He would drop way out of the top ten today.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0004-6.jpg
With 19km to go, Tosatto became the final member of the group to be caught as Garmin cranked up the pace for Farrar. Bole was keeping Bozic positioned near the front as the peloton approached 10km to go.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0005-8.jpg
Chris Froome (Sky) gave a big kick in the final 10km and gained a 30 second gap, but the leadouts of Lampre and Skoda - Orlen soon had the Kenyan-born Brit back in the peloton. Farrar was again positioned perfectly behind Petacchi, whilst Bole and Bozic were looking good.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/Giro/PCM0006-7.jpg
And the American took his second stage win in the Giro from Ventoso, who just pipped Petacchi on the line. Bozic came a brilliant fifth just behind Allan Davis, with Bole hanging on to take 12th. Apart from Oroz, the other top riders all came home together.

Team Summary
A great result for Bozic today as he gets into the top five for the first time. That's what he came for and he has achieved it now. Velits managed to get another rest day with a hilly stage coming up tomorrow and the mountains approaching. Not a lot else to say really.
