Tour de Romandie - Stage 5
Vevey - Châtel
It might be the hardest stage in this edition. Daniel Martin should be a big favourite for mountain top finishes with this starting field. But unfortunately the last climb isn`t very hard. An average of 3-5% won`t make big problems for weaker climbers. But nevertheless our big goal for today is the stage win.
No breakaway until the first mountain sprint. All groups were caught immediately. HTC-Columbia doesn`t want to lose the jersey and their squad is strong enough to defend it in all terrains.
The best climber in this race is taking the mountain points. Soler is ahead of Krujiswijk and Simoni.
All 3 of them are going back into the peloton. Bonnafond is trying it with an downhill attack. He is 2'45'' back in the overall.
The climb to the second mountain begins. Bonnafond had never a bigger advantage than 2'15''. The first riders will probably catch him soon.
Daniel Martin increases the pace. Immediately Tony Martin and Gerdemann attack.
But our Martin is by far the strongest on the climbs and takes the points. Just Van Garderen and Fuglsang can follow quite easily. Bonnafond can go over the top with htis group. Gerdemann is fighting to hold contact.
Tony Martin and Sivtsov lost it and are a few meters back. Then follows Kessiakoff a few seconds ahead of the peloton.
On the descent Martin and Sivtsov were able to come back again. Kessiakoff is back in the peloton again. The stage win will be taken by one of this group although the next group is quite close now.
Daniel Martin attacks on the only steeper part of this "mountain" with 7,4%.
Bad luck. Although he was the strongest today, Gerdemann oversprinted him in the last 200 meters. But at least he shows a good performance on the mountains and gives us hope for a good Giro.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 6
Sion - Sion
Three mountains but everything else is totally flat. Also the last kilometers are flat, so it will be hard to create a gap here. Probably there will be a bigger group in the end.
Novoa (Euskaltel), Nepomnyachskiy (Astana) and Cummings (Sky) are today`s break. None of them is really dangerous.
HTC thinks probably the same and don`t go for a fast pace. So RadioShack is doing it alone and with many riders. What`s their plan for today? They don`t have any rider for the overall and also no men for today.
The stage should be too hard for Ventoso and Hermans didn`t show a good form yet.
On the last mountain Martin increases again. Kessiakoff tries to hold contact but Martin is too strong here.
Gerdemann and Fuglsang are jumping to Martin. Kessiakoff is back in the peloton again together will the HTC riders.
Martin took the points and leads the race solo. 32 seconds later the favourites can see him.
He also takes the 6 bonus seconds. Unfortunately we weren`T careful anough and so Van Garderen takes the last 2 seconds and overtakes Kessiakoff in the overall by 1s.
Fuglsang shows unknown sprint skills and wins easily ahead of Txurruka and Zaugg. Tony Martin wins the race because of two strong timetrials. HTC was the best team by far. Kessiakoff on 6 again and Martin on 10 showed a good race. A very strong performance of Team Milram as 2nd and 4th in the overall. Obviously they set this race as one of their absolutely season peaks.

Summary April 2011
A very long April is over now. We had some good results in most races. But unfortunately we couldn`t get a single top 10 in all hilly PT classics. Therefore we had nice results in the stage races and also good results in the cobbled races.
Ivan Basso proved with his victory in Trentino that he is the top favourite for the Giro d`Italia. But also D.Martin was able to show a very good form.
Alberto Contador had a good April. With the overall and two stage wins in the Vuelta a Pais Vasco and 3 x top10 in the hilly classics he really deserved this award.
Gallopin was 6th in the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe and won one stage there and the U25 ranking. He also wore the leader jersey for 2 days.
After good performances in March Cancellara was also in a good shape in April what he showed in the Amstel Gold Race.
Saxobank is also leading the team ranking. Garmin on 4 is also quite good. Team Milram is the strongest Continental squad in the PT ranking.
Another important point is the allocation of the Tour de France wildcards. All 18 PT teams are taking part. So 6 teams are fighting for the last slots.
Milram is a good bet for a slot. They have a strong teams for the mountains and a great sprinter with Ciolek.
Skil-Shimano has also good chances with Riccardo Ricco, who waives the Giro this year.
BMC lost most of their strongest riders after not joining the Pro Tour. So Andreas Klöden and well improved Matthias Frank are the biggest names there.
Cofidis is the only French team in the list. With Taaramae they have a talented climber and many attacking alternatives.
Colnago have a great team this season. With Mollema, Pozzovivo and Modolo they could play a good role in the tour. But they are already participating in the Giro with all 3 of them so it questionable if they also have a good team for the Tour.
Carmiooro has underdog chances. With Sella and Serpa they have good climbers. Also they wasn`t invited for the Giro, so they could send a good squad.
Surprisingly some teams didn`t asked for a wildcard. Especially Saur-Sojasun, Vacansoleil and Footon were expected. |

Bad luck, that Van Garderen goes on 5th in Romandie by 1 second! But 6th and 10th overall, and Martin's 2nd in stage, are still good! Some nice moves. Good to have the screens

I just played the first two Giro stages. Both of them crashed like the Romandie stages. The graphic is already set to very low and I never had a problem like this before.
Always after the last one enters the finish and it should switch to the replay.
I will reinstall the game and hope that everything works fine after it.
But these 2 stages definitely won`t have pictures again.
This sucks. |

I definitely will. Unfortunately the second stage was quite interesting as it was the first very hilly.
But I already install the game new. Then I update graphic drivers and so on. Then I give it another try with a weekly save to avoid more stages without success. |

I haven`t found a solution yet. I can play without crashes if I deavticate the replays. But I need them for the story. So I haven`t played since then, except of weekly saves and testing a lot.
Alternatively I have to make the screenshots during the race and without replays. But then there is less fun while playing and the left rider will be there and might "destroy" some nice screens.
Also I can play some races and some not.
Romandie 2+3 crash, Romandie 5+6 not.
Liege Bastogne Liege and the other classics don`t crash, so it might not be the length or the amount of extras in this stage as AGR or RVV are also quite big.

You can switch off these left rider (and everything else) by pressing 'CTRL + U' in race-mode.. this might be a solution as long as you can't solve this crashes. I had to switch off the the replays a while ago, too. But only in +200km-races.. your problem sounds very strange. I hate computers

Thanks for this tip. Haven`t known that.
I am not home until Sunday evening. But next week I will try it this way. Hope the stages after the Giro are working again. |

As long as I am still here I can do the presentation for the Giro 2011
Will be a very interesting one I guess.
Special thanks to Emmea for a great Giro variant.
The Giro d`Italia is the first GT in the cycling season. It`s held in May over 3 weeks. The first Giro d'Italia started on May 13, 1909 at Milan. It`S the second most famous cycling stage race next to the Tour de France. As in other GT`s the Giro has stages for sprinters, timetrial specialists, breakaways and climbers. But actually most Giros have lots of hard and spectacular mountain stages, so it can be won by pure climbers "easier" than the Tour, where you also should be a great timetrialist.
3 riders were able to win the Giro 5 times: Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx. An incredibly number of 42 stage wins were won by Mario Cippollini and so he leads this statistic. Another great record are Petacchi`s 9 victories in one Giro. Nice to see him back here in 2011.
Result in 2010
1 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre-Farnese Vini | 2 | Riccardo Ricco | Ceramica Flaminia | 3 | Christian Vandevelde | Garmin - Transitions | 4 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas-Doimo | 5 | Michele Scarponi | Androni Giocattoli - Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni | 6 | Stefano Garzelli | Acqua & Sapone | 7 | Haimar Zubeldia | Team RadioShack | 8 | Marzio Bruseghin | Caisse d`Epargne | 9 | Juan Manuel Garate | Rabobank | 10 | Ivan Basso | Lampre-Farnese Vini | P: Tyler Farrar Garmin - Transitions
KoM: Stefano Garzelli Acqua & Sapone
U25: Francesco Masciarelli Acqua & Sapone
It was a very successful Giro for our Garmin squad. With won stage win of Farrar and the sprinter jersey and another stage for Vandevelde and the podium ahead of Nibali, Scarponi and Basso. Cunego and Ricco, both pure climbers had several minutes advantage to the rest.
Daniel Martin was 20th as helper and 2nd in the U25 ranking.
2011
The course
The Giro starts with a 9km ITT in Milano. It starts with some flat and hilly stages and a 23km TTT on day 4.
Then the first mountains will mix the overall quite a lot probably. With 9 mountain stages, 6 of them mountain top finishes, including Bormio 2000 over Gavia and Mortirolo, Plan de Corones and Monte Zoncolan, it`s a quite hard Giro. But there are also 6 flat stages for the sprinters and 3 hilly stages for breakaways. In the last week a 50km flat ITT can also be very important for the overall.
Garmin squad 2011
Our squad isn`t that strong to win this Giro for sure. But we have some good possibilities to win some stages. Daniel Martin might have some freedom in the mountains, Hunter can win a mass sprint. With especially Millar we have a rider for breakaways in hilly territory. The other riders will probably also try it in a group and will support Martin and Hunter in the other stages.
With the long flat ITT Martin will lose lots of time, so his most important goal is to get a stage win. But nevertheless he will be better than last year. So a top 15 or even top 10 would be really nice for him.

An interesting note: Just 3 riders from the 2010 top 10 are participating. Nibali, Basso and Scarponi.
The winner Cunego wasn`t nominated and Ricco`s Skil-Shimano team is going for the Tour. Also Acqua & Sapone has no wildcard.
Favourites
Overall
Vincenzo Nibali might be the biggest favourite in this edition. He is the only leader for Liquigas and with Zaugg and Agnoli he will have 2 helpers in the mountains. Last year he Liquigas participated with the duo Basso/Nibali and Nibali beated his team mate.
Instead of Cunego Lampre sends his new rider Ivan Basso as leader. He might be the strongest rider in the mountains, but therefore he has a little disadvantage in the long timetrial. But it will be a interesting battle between these old team mates.
He might have the weakest squad for the mountains of the top favourites as there are severall sprinters in it.
Although Levi Leipheimer is the oldest favourite, he is still the best time trialist of them. Also his climber skills are still quite good. He has a nice squad behind him with Lance Armstrong and Ben Hermanns.
Michele Scarponi did a great job last year and wants to get a podium this year. He has good chances actually.
The young American Tejay Van Garderen rode a strong Tour de Romandie. He developed very well and is a very good bet on a top 5.
Domenico Pozzovivo is one of the best climbers here and has also a good chance for a very good result. But he has the same problem as Dan Martin. He will lose lots of time in the timetrials. Therefore he has the strongest co leader as helper. Bauke Mollema will be able to help him in the hard mountains longer than other helpers.
Cadel Evans has still underdog chances for a podium. If he doesn`t lose too much time in the mountains then he will win some time in the timetrial again. It won`t be enough to beat Basso or Nibali probably but you never know.
Sprints
***** Cavendish
**** Greipel, Steegmans
*** Modolo, Hunter, Petacchi
** Gavazzi, McEwen, Hushovd, Hagen
* Ventoso, Loddo, Rossi, Goss, Feillu
This overview is not for the points jersey as also the overall riders will have chances with that many mountain stages.
Especially HTC with Cavendish, Greipel and Goss and RadioShack with Hushovd, Ventoso, Steegmans and Impey will have nice trains here. But also Petacchi, McEwen and Hunter will be strong sprinters. Loddo, Rossi and Modolo are the hopes of the smaller teams whereas Gavazzi or Hagen will also have chances after a more hilly stage.
KoM
*** Rujano
** Pozzovivo, Le Mevel
* D. Martin, Martinez, Efimkin
It`s always hard to bet on this jersey as you never know what`s the goals of these riders/teams. But Rujoano is one of the best climbers in the field and so he might attack more often than others in the mountains. If Martin loses too much time we will also ride quite aggressive and go for the jersey.
U25
*** Van Garderen
** D. Martin, Mollema
* Seeldraeyers, Hermans, Intxausti
It will be very hard to win this jersey if you are not Tejay Van Garderen. He is the big favourite. But the fight for the podium might be interesting. |

Good luck in Italy (Hope you are able to play soon again)! I think Martin shold be a candidate for a Top10, and Hunter should be able to take a victory in a sprint. |

Thanks.
Because of an friend`s illness I am "forced" to stay at home this weekend.
So I will post the first crashed stages as short reports today.
Prologue with pictures, 2+3 without:
Giro d'Italia - Stage 1
Milano - Milano
A short ITT with 9km in the city of Milano. Even if it`s not a definite proof we can see, who is in a good shape and who not.
Pozzovivo of the small Colnago team is the first favourite on the course.
He will lose quite a lot time today. So he is forced to attack in the mountains.
13'18
David Millar is our strongest prologue rider. But in the Tour de Romandie he couldn`t get a top result. Same today. Not bad but also not very good.
12'47
Thor Hushovd is one favourite today. He won a prologue in the Tour a few years ago and he is always a men for these short ITT`s. And he makes a new best time.
12'28
Cavendish is THE sprinter. Together with his best friend Greipel and Goss he will be the favourite on the 6 flat stages.
12'49
Lance Armstrong isn`t the strongest rider in the RadioShack squad. But will he really help Leipheimer or will he also ride on his own? His time today isn`t that bad.
12'42
Daniel Martin, our leader in this race isn`t a friend of timetrials. But therefore he did well today. 5sec faster than Pozzovivo.
13'13
Van Garderen is a very young and also very talented stage racer. If he has a good form and can take it over 3 weeks then he could challenge Basso and Nibali. A very good time for him.
12'32
Scarponi is an average time trialist. But this short one wasn`t his best.
13'04
Cadel Evans for his new Katusha team. Obviously he is not in his best form. He could do better in timetrials.
12'57
Nibali also shows a very good timetrial but he is 4sec slower than Van Garderen.
12'36
The American timetrial champion Levi Leipheimer could break into the Italian contender. His timetrial is quite good and his strength might be the long 50km timetrial.
12'38
Ivan Basso wears the 1 instead of his team mate and last years winner Damiano Cunego. His strength is the climbing part but his timetrial is also very good for him. Same time than Millar.
12'47
We don`t have pictures of Boasson Hagen, who beated Hushovd`s time and of Grivko, who also showed a great performance. Van Garderen leads the favourites but also Nibali, Leipheimer and Basso showed a good performance. Evans and Scarponi lost several seconds.
