Yeah, Sherlock is one big amazing show. 2 years of waiting have been quite long, but Season 3 started a few days ago - and the first episode is just flawless. As usual. But then again, I'm a pretty big fan of Steven Moffat since Doctor Who's Blink.

Lucky me, I just had to wait for the third season only a few days
Spoiler I liked how they decided not to tell us exactly how Sherlock survived and I think it would be better if they would leave it like this. Everyone has their own scenario and no matter how they will explain it, most people will still be disappointed. So better to leave it like that

After watching the masterful performances of Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes I doubt I could ever watch the current guy (I don't know why every TV program has to be called Sherlock nowadays... even though they have nothing to do with the original stories, I suppose the name sells it.)
BTW, I am also currently reading Sherlock Holmes, thought it best to start at the beginning so I am getting through them in chronological order, great reading. |

Cumberbatch is pretty amazing as Sherlock. Give it a go, The Rider.

Sorry i have to jump in on this...
The Empty Hearse was just not that good... At least it wasn't as good as the hype the BBC had created around it. All the top moments (bar 3) were given away in interviews, blogs, pics and trailers. It just didn't match up.
It was way behind Seasons 1+2 from the start and only briefly (entirely thanks to Freeman) shone bright in the whole 90mins.
Equally Moffat is overhyped aswell. Blink was good, but his other Who episodes left an awful lot to be desired. His writing for Sherlock was good, but the series quality can equally be given to others (Gatiss, Thompson, Freeman).

I havn't seen any of the trailers or read interviews, so all these top moments were in it and I thorougly enjoyed the episode from start to finish. The humour was quite great, they had great sceneries and they had put in a nice twist for all these explanations. And actually the story of the case was really good too. I suppose The Empty Hears will play a role in future episodes, where the motives will become clearer - read spoilers:
Spoiler The whole plot circled around terrorism apparently (remember, remember...), but it's pretty obvious at the last image, when you see the new villain and all these televisions around him, that it was actually a staged event. Sherlock had to diffuse the bomb, that's why it was so easy eventually. The villain wanted him to succeed. Given that the senate debated around Anti-Terrorism Bill, and that it could go either way (for or against it), this little bomb probably turned Britain into an all-surveilance area... at least, that's my take on it, and if that's the case, I like it. Surely, it wouldn't be much of a surprise though for anyone interested in conspiracy theories and such, but I'd still like it.

But a fucking off switch! No! nonononononononNNOOOO!
Even if it was set up as a scene it's still cheap and lazy. Not even comedies have been near that bad quality in decades!
I really tried to like it, cause i adore the first two seasons. I also love Sherlock Holmes in general. Great books, some great films etc. But this just didn't sit right with me. Trying to do too much in the run-time leaving too much untold. Yes it sets up a longer arc, but it totally breaks away from the style used in Seasons 1+2. But it just missed for me too often. It was better than most tv out there, but it should have been better.

As stated, the off-switch makes perfect sense just like the activation...
Spoiler ... of the bomb only happend when Holmes and Watson were in the carriage underground. Seeing as the villain had a camera appointed on Sherlock at the burning, it's only natural that he'd know what happens down there too. The other guy, that minister of overseas development, he was just the fall guy... and based upon his action in the hotel room, he knew that. The parlament was never meant to be destoryed, the villain wanted to get that Anti-Terrorism Bill to succeed for sure.

Ok you are thinking way too into it all and making conclusions of, at best, circumstantial evidence.
I just didn't enjoy it as much as the previous episodes. And Moffat is over rated.

Haha, yeah Moffat is probably indeed overrated. I still love his plot twists and his sometimes really unique atmosphere, but his story-arcs tend to be way too complicated.

What did I say about people having very high expectations and then be disappointed even though the episode was really good?
Of course it had to be a bit different than the other episodes because it was 2 years since we last saw the characters and we had to find out what happened in that time.

More Arthur Dent for me. Btw last nights new episode was beautiful. It was Sherlock as it sbould be with proper mystery and interest. Now if they could just stop making Holmes normal that would be great

Strange. I read some opinions and most people stated they really didn't like it and were quite disappointend. Mostly that was because the case was arguably even weaker than in the first episode, so I felt like many people who didn't like episode 1 also don't like episode 2.
I personally liked it very much, it was a great episode about the friendship between the two, some brillant scenes and the last 30 minutes grab to the edge of my seat. I like it that the series continues to change and develop itself. In any case, Season 3 seems to be a season of transition and where they are willing to take risks and change the tone of the series. Maybe Season 4 will be more of the classic Sherlock tales again.

Season 4... in 2020
But yes i actually agree about the case. It was weak and thinly fleshed out, but it was a full case with some interesting ideas. Plus the overlay graphics were used to great effect and it really lifted the whole episode.
What made it great for me was the scene with the Women in the courtroom. Just beautifully written, acted and edited. One of the best scenes i've watched in quite a long time.

True, it was one of the best scenes in the series and gave us a glimpse of how fast Sherlock's mind is really working. Damn fast.

So, season 3 is over, and thankfully with the best episode of the season. But...
Good news is, apparently season 4 and 5 have been signed. |
