After a successful Tirreno - Adratico, we stay in Italy for an another race, the first real classic of the season, Milano Sanremo, which is also our first goal of the season. The sponsors put a condition for us to finish in the top 10 here.
Lovkvist, Hagen and Flecha showed some good form so far, especially in Tirreno, where Lovet won the overall, while Hagen got a stage win and the points jersey. They are all here to lead our team and hopefully one of them will have a good day and get in the best position to bring us the top 10.
The defending champion, Mark Cavendish is here, as well as other important names such as Bennati, Freire, Petacchi, Pozzato, Cancellara, Gilbert, Devolder, Cunego, O'Grady or Simoni. It will be very interesting to see if it's going to be decided in a mass sprint or one of the attacks on the many small ascents from the last half of the race will be the winning move.
Team Sky for Milano Sanremo:
Kurt Asle Arvesen
Edvald Boasson Hagen
Kjell Karlström
Dario Cioni
Juan Antonio Flecha
Simon Gerrans
Peter Kennaugh
Thomas Lövkvist

Here it is the first PT classic of the season. The riders will start in Milan and after a ride of almost 300 kilometers, with ascents such as Capo Cervo, Capo Berta, La Cipresa and Poggio, they will reach the finish in San Remo. Pozzato could be a name to follow today, but one of the former winners, Fabian Cancellara, should also be at the top, as well as the defending champion, Mark Cavendish
Many riders, including Peter Kennaugh, tried to get away from the pack in the early meters of the race but the pack brought them all back. After a few kilometers with a compact pack, Dall'Antonio got away in a solo adventure
Columbia, Lampre, Omega Pharma and Saxo Bank chased him down and eventually caught him somewhere around 100 kilometers before the finish. Also we saw some interesting moves there, as Cunego, Simoni and Breschel were chasing down Dall'Antonia, which means that Lampre is all in with Petacchi, while Saxo Bank are betting everything on Cancellara
At the foot of the Capo Berta, Cancellara initiated an attack and was closely followed by Gilbert and Devolder. Flecha also attacked from the pack a little bit later to join them at the top of the climb
They managed to work together very well and they got quite soon a gap of 2 minutes over the pack, where only Eisel was chasing them down.
They started Cipressa with a gap of more than 3 minutes over the pack. On the ascent, Gilbert looked stronger than the other 3 and he kept pushing and pushing, trying to get away from them
And he eventually did it. At the top of Cipressa he had an advantage of 1 minute over Cancellara, Flecha and Boonen and more than 3 minutes over the pack, where no one seems able to lead the chase properly
Gilbert seems to have made the right move there as soon as he got on Poggio he extended his lead to 2 minutes. Only a technical problem or a crash could stop him now
Behind him, Boonen, Cancellara and Flecha stayed together and tried to bring him back but they didn't stand a chance. Still it looks like 2 of them will finish on the podium today as the pack is more almost 3 minutes behind them
Gilbert entered the streets of Sanremo in a confident solo lead. With the main chasers still more than 2 minutes behind him, he is now 99% sure of his win
Behind him, the other 3 attackers were fighting for the other 2 positions on the podium. Boonen was the strongest sprinter in the group and got away to secure the 2nd place, while Flecha and Cancellara fought for the third place
Philippe Gilbert wins La Primavera after an amazing ride. He clearly dominated all his opponents today on the uphill sections. With this win he is also the new leader of the Pro Tour
Boonen took the 2nd place, while Flecha beat Cancellara in the battle for the third place, to bring Team Sky an important podium. The goal here was a top 10, but Flecha did way more than that
Omega Pharma and Quick Step also lead the pack, where Hoste got the 5th place in front of Chavanel and Devolder. Hagen finished 10th, which means that he had 2 riders within the sponsor goal today

well for me that's not an important ranking. So I won't post one for now, but there's definitely going to be one at the end of the season and maybe at some crucial points during it

Nice with MSR, ended like it always does in my carrers. In mine usually Gilbert or Ballan takes it.

The fourth Pro Tour race in March, after Paris - Nice, Tirreno - Adriatico and Milano Sanremo is Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. After an amazing Tirreno - Adriatico, Thomas Lovkvist will continue his preparation for the Vuelta a Espana here, in Catalunya.
Two of our most important riders from the sprint train, Flecha and Boasson Hagen won't be riding here as this week there are also going to be held some cobbled classics, including Gent - Wevelgem. Downing, Sutton and Vigano will represent us in the sprints here, but it will be very hard for them to grab a stage win as Cavendish, Freire and Farrar are the leading sprinters that are taking part in Volta a Catalunya.
Lovkvist will also have a hard job getting a good place overall, the recent winner of the Paris - Nice, Alejandro Valverde being the main favorite here. Contador, Armstrong, Menchov, Gesink, Pellizotti, Franck Schleck, Cungeo, Simoni are all here as well.
Team Sky for Volta Ciclista a Catalunya:
Jonh Lee Augustyn
Sylvain Calzati
Russell Downing
Simon Gerrans
Thomas Lövkvist
Morris Possoni
Chris Sutton
Davide Viganò

Being norwegian, Sky is of course my favourite team to play with. Enjoying your story very much, and think you are doing a good job. Milan-San Remo ended with the same top 4 in my game... Fun |
