Vuelta Restday

Post Danmark Rundt

To make the race slightly less predictable the organizers have decided to award time for smaller gaps than previous years.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-22-PDR-1-2_zps7a797d42.jpg
Wallin did his best to get in a break on stage 1, and in spite of Omega Pharma – QuickStep chasing hard he managed to crack a gap with 12 others.
The break looked to get caught with about 5 km to go, but then with 15 km left a huge crash tore the peloton in half. Fortunately we were all in the front group
That disrupted the chase just long enough for the break to fight for the stage win.
It was the best shot at a win Joel has had this far in his career, but he still need a lot of hours on the bike to win a sprint even in a reduced group like this.
Still his first professional top 10 is an important milesone.

Haussler took stage 2 after another chaotic sprint. This time without our captains losing any time on the road.

Stage 3 to Vejle was cancelled due to a bomb-thread that later proved to come from a retired boxer with only one leg. The police called it the work of a lone mad-man.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-22-PDR-1-1_zps92db086e.jpg
Stage 4 was a short flat stage for the pure sprinters.
Wallin had decen success getting in the early break, but they were never given much of a chance.
Quaade tried his best to gain some time in the finish, but couldn’t match the sprinters and Haussler took another dominant win.

After the rule change the TT has lost a little significance in the race, but still it’s a major goal for Quaade in his preparations for the worlds.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-22-PDR-5-_zps4af63f04.jpg
While Quaade prepares his big assault on the stage and perhaps the GC McDermott goes out dreaming of defending his white jersey.
18’51’’ by Phinney is the time to beat at this time.
Quaade and McDermott says hi again on the finish line, but they shouldn’t have as Rasmus loses to Phinney by less than a second!

Quaade jumps to 3rd in the GC and Matzen takes over the white jersey.

With just a flat stage into Copenhagen left nothing seemed to be able to threat Haussler taking the GC.
Kump took the final stage in a chaotic finish with lots of attacking from us to no good.
The peloton cracked in the sprint and Quaade was caught in the wrong part losing 50 seconds and with it a lot of terrain in the GC in spite of having picked upa few bonus seconds along the way.

At least we get white and the team in what turns in to a fairly disappointing race for us alltogether with no GC podoum and no stage wins.

A decent showing at Post Danmark Rund with 3 young riders and guys who look to get into form. Obviously there can't be too much expected since the team focuses on the Vuelta and therefor has bigger fishes to catch, but I think they still showed their presence here in Denmark and reminded everyone why they won so many national jerseys. And still way better than Saxo, whose best rider is 116. Wink

Shonak: The youngsters did good, but we had hoped for more in our home race. In the end the smaller/extra time gaps awarded made it hard to avoid losing time.

To have a rider in the top ten of the GC and win two Classifications you can still declare the race a success Wink

Off to a good start.

I personally loved this Giro route. It's demanding, offers great variance in the stages and I'm sure Fuglsang has a shot at the GC. I think the route ends in Brescia, and there's also a 50 km time trial along the way before the last 4-5 decivise mountain stages, if I'm not mistaken?

I mostly look forward to the cobbled stage though. Playing it with Lampre back then (in PCM2012), this was just really too good to play. Back then, I had several cobble experts with my riders and we managed to break away and snatch veeery important time to the other riders (+2 minutes I think) and in the end, my rider won by 29 seconds, so this can be really a important step to securing victory again, or lose the Grand Tour. Anyway, just sharing some thoughts.

Good luck for the Giro! Cool

Thanks, it's mine Banana

As we hit the final mountain we make sure to keep a steady pace. Meanwhile Rabottini is busy proving that the once so great Purito really is over the hill.

With 4,3 km to go Antón is off again. This time Ipsen is right after him as are Henao and Sicard.

Antón and Henao takes turns attacking and Ipsen gets the task of closing all the gaps.

Antón is strong as usual on the sprint, but the two get a small gap to Henao.

Furthermore Chris just manages to squeeze into the top 10 after having worked hard for Willy and to our great surprise Elissonde keeps on disappointing losing even more time in the young riders competition.

Stage 12: Ponteareas – Pontevedra
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-12-1_zps5f5289d0.jpg
Everything points to a break for this one.
Breschel is allowed to chase the break while the rest just have to get through the day as easy as possible.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-12-2_zpseaab7237.jpg
Matti gets away with Kashechkin and Zangerle early on but a large group establishes in between them and the peloton after 50 km that might threat their chances.

Breschel is forced to do all the work in the front group and on the second climb the two others decide to fall back leaving Matti alone in front. I tell him not to use too much energy and wait for the big group behind, who has more than 8 minutes to the peloton with 70 km to go.

We were right in our pre-stage analysis as nothing less than a meteor can stop the break with 30 km to go. Breschel has now been caught by the chasing group, but is on paper the fastest rider in there.

When the attacking starts in the break Matti is right on them.

10 km to go and things are back together in front.

Breschel is perfectly placed going into the final 2 km sitting behind Del Nero, Pietropolli and former world champion Freire.

None of them were even close to matching him on the final km!

10 minutes later the peloton still has 5 km to go and Willy decides to try Fuglsangs Giro-trick and attacks when no on suspects him to. He is successful in gaining enough time to take the red jersey before the three upcoming mountain stages.

With Matti doing what he came for; Hunting stage wins and Willy looking even sharper than expected along with the disappointing rides from the youngsters in general putting Tobias in white this is almost getting silly.

Still we have three mountain stages ahead of us where we everything could be turned up-side down on just one bad day.

World Champion delivering, yeah Grin

And Willy Shock aggressive riding, amazing!
Next few stages will be very, very important!

Congrats on the nomination for the award, much deserved!

sutty68
Great stage win from Matti Grin and nice to see Willy back in the lead Grin

Atlantius
Ian: The Vuelta looks to be so close that any seconds we can find can prove crucial, so it was a great couple of days to have Breschel show why he's in the rainbow jersey while Ipsen went (back) in red!

sutty: Couldn't agree more Wink

Also a huge thanks to everyone who have nominated this for Team Story of the Year. It really means a lot to get this recognition!

Breschel Grin

And awesome display by Willy! Grin

Two awesome days for the Nordic Boys.

Congratulations for the nomination, Atlantius. Much deserved. Given the sheer scope of the story it's an obvious choice for me. Wink

Amazing two days at the Vuelta. I'll bet my money on Breschel defending the WC title, and Willy recovered great and delivered a clear signal for his Grand Tour ambitions. Cool

Miguel: The others should know that they can't rest easy when we are around Cool

Shonak: Thanks. A bit surprised not to see Gora Euskadi in there though. Ptobably too young still I guess...
Both certainlyproved they are not here by accident Wink

Vuelta a España

Stage 13: Sarria – Ponferrada
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-13-1_zps146ce8fc.jpg
I present to you the only real mountain stage not finishing on a summit. We don’t expect too much to happen with this finish.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-13-2_zps278a9362.jpg
A good few riders attack early on, but we just keep track of them to make sure none of them can become a threat in the GC.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-13-3_zpsa148a0fb.jpg
Still we end up deciding to tell Alex and Gustav to work on the “quiet” middle part of the stage.

With 78 km to go they have reduced the peloton to 89 riders and the gap to the break to three minutes.

Magazzini is the only rider out in front on top of the main climb Puerto de Ancares.

He has just over two minutes to the peloton, which is now down to 64 riders including all my boys!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-13-4_zps63e6088d.jpg
Sicard and Antón attacks on the small hill 37 km from goal, but we are confident that our boys can reel them back in.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-13-5_zps91703cc9.jpg
Heano follows up on the attack and turns out to be the strongest so with 15 km to go he has 16 seconds to Sicard, Antón and 5 others, who has 40 seconds to Ipsen, Löfkvist, Sørensen and Ludvigsson.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-23-Vuelta-13-6_zps0e165e56.jpg
With 6 km left the guys have brought the front groups together forming a 20-rider group with all the big names and Ludvigsson, who is having an amazing day.

Tobias does his best but haven’t got enough left in the tank to go past anyone in the end.
A brilliant day from him nonetheless!

The bonus seconds brings Henao within 4 seconds of the red!

August Edition

Rider of the Month: Peter Sagan, Team Santander. The Slovakian completely dominated Eneco Tour.
Nordic Rider of the Month: Tobias Ludvigsson, Novo Nordisk - SAS The young Swede not only got his best WT-result by finishing 4th and taking the youth jersey in Eneco he also went on to lead the youth classification in the Vuelta at the end of the month with several strong stage showings along the way.

Year of the Champion

In three seasons the rainbow jersey was cursed in the shoulders of Gilbert, who only managed one win wearing the jersey. Then it went to Milano – Sanremo winner Matti Breschel. The first Danish RR World Champion. This article will bring an overview of his season to examine if the rainbow jersey really is cursed as they say.

Breschel’s first big task as world champion was the final monument of the season: Il Lombardia. It was like the entire team was lifted by having the rainbow jersey next to them and especially Brian Steen Matzen and Chris Anker Sørensen rode to their best to pull things apart allowing Matti to break the curse of the rainbow.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/09-30-Lombard-11_zpsc18940aa.jpg
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/10-10-Beijing-2-6_zps653024ab.jpg

From there on he tried giving something back to the team in the small races of October, but still managed to take a stage win in Beijing while finishing 4th overall in the final stage race of the season.

Those results brought him to 7th in the WT-rankings, a Velo d’Or nomination and being awarded “Nordic Rider of the Year”.

For the early part of 2016 the team had planned a number of smaller races to give a lot of fans the chance to see the jersey. And he was off to a flying start taking 2nd place after doing leadout for Kristoff in Grand Prix la Marsaillaise.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/02-04-DanCake-2_zps150b8197.jpg

From there he went on to the Danish season-opener DanCake Classic. A race with cobbles and small hills and as such a race most suiting for Breschel, and the world champion made sure to give the home fans the best possible view of “their” world champion.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/02-05-Qatar-2_zps53d55d80.jpg

A big weakness for the team had up to this season been bunch sprints so Matti went with the team to Qatar to practize that discipline with the best train possible. They improved a lot throughout the race managing to beat Cavendish and his strong Ferrari-train in stage 4 while winning the race with Breschel on 2nd place due to a strong team time trial.

He went on to build form as a leadoutman for Boasson Hagen in Oman resulting in 3 stage wins for the Norwegian.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/03-08-TA-1-8_zps936d0015.jpg

He polished his Tirreno-form in Andalucía, but in Italy the pure sprinters was staring to get in shape and a 2nd place after Sagan was the closest he came to a win. A GC 7th is proof that his form was where it should be ahead of his first big goal of the season: Milano – Sanremo. The race that kicstarted Breschel’s amazing 2015 and the race where he hoped the most to bring honour to the jersey.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/03-12-Sanrem-10_zps46176282.jpg

His entire team did an amazing bit of work for him, but sadly it turned out that Gilberts lack of results the last three years perhaps was due to the curse of the rainbow as the Belgian is just as strong as the peloton only allowing Breschel to take a 2nd place. Not that 2nd is bad, but as world champion and defending winner he had hoped for more.

The cobbled races were the center of Breschel’s season for many years with the really big results never really coming. He hasn’t stopped loving them though and rode a full cobbled campaign in a free role.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/03-21-Dwars-10_zps2896916f.jpg

With a win in Dwaars door Vlaanderen (where he also won in 2010) he was off to a good start, but in the big races he ended up mostly as a luxury domestique helping the team to win both E3 and Paris – Roubaix with Breschel finishing 11th on the velodrome.

From there went on to a long break only short resurfacing in the National championships, but focused on getting ready for stage hunting in the Vuelta as preparation for defending the world championships on a very hard route.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-06-Eneco-4-5_zps3bde0257.jpg

He didn’t return to the peloton until Eneco Tour in early August. Naturally he wasn’t in the great shape but he rode himself out helping the team and Ludvigsson probablt couldn’t have gotten his best stage race result ever without the help of Breschel. And as you know class always shows and Matti even managed to sneak into the GC top 10 without even going for it!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-14-Sebas-8_zps6b2967a6.jpg

So it would seem he was ready for his second big season goal: Clásica San Sebastián but just as in Sanremo he was watched closely by the others and forced to be the one closing gaps. And once again one rider was having the ride of his life to deny Matti the win.

That left Breschel even more hungry for the Vuelta and after winning the TTT he was in a unique position with a real shot of getting to wear the leaders jersey in the race where he got his first World Tour win back in 2008. On stage 2 he finished 9th in the bunch sprint.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/08-17-Vuelta-3-7_zpsaeecd531.jpg

Stage 3 had a profile much more suiting for Breschel with a not too hard hill and a long descent before the finish and he made the most of it taking the stage win from a late attack. An effort that also brought him in red for the next stage, where he had to hand it over to team mate Willy Ipsen.
He almost managed to win a bunch sprint on stage 7, which also suddenly brought him in contention for the points jersey as well. A position he reinforced by winning out of a breakaway on stage 12.
He looks ready to defend his title with several Vuelta-stages of his liking still to come!
