Stage 4: Baza – Sierra Nevada
The first mountain top finish of this Vuelta will show who is in form and who is not.
Six riders form the early break with Armee and Chainel the strongest climbers on paper, so we are confident that they won’t give us too much trouble in the end…
At the start of the climb five riders including Fränk Schleck build a tiny gap to the peloton where we put on the pressure. Only 73 riders remain in the peloton.
Antón tries to attack with 14 km to go, but he has more than enough trouble getting ahead of Kessiakoff, who is doing a great piece of work!
Löfkvist keeps the tempo high cracking a lot of riders incl. Antón in service of Willy.
6 km from the top he suddenly gets a gap to the others and we tell him to keep going to force the others to chase.
Willy covers the attacks from behind and with 5 km to go it looks like he might get away along with Henao.
Henao, Sicard and Ipsen join up with the Swede with 3 km left to go.
With 2 km to go Willy decides to go solo.
An amazing effort by the young Dane gives him the stage and the leaders jersey.
This is why it's a bad idea to use the first week of a GT to build form when we're in it!
Graeme Brown and Bryan Bogarde missed the time limit.

If Willy has got the form and hasn't raced too much and too hard earlier on in the season he may well win. By the looks of it Anton has no chance, looks like he burnt himself out in the Giro. |

Stage 5: Sierra Nevada – Valdepeñas de Jaén
Possible the most tricky stage of them all for Willy as he much prefers long climbs over short ones.
With a stage finish like this we didn’t want to chase the break to serve the bonus seconds to the competition, so it was perfect to see five decent hilly riders with no GC chances go away early.
Nissan and Vacansoleil take charge of the chase and with 100 km to go they have reduced the gap to 9’30’’ and the peloton to 77 riders. All our riders are still in the main group.
20 km and three minutes, now with Fraile and Garcia in between.
As soon as we hit the final couple of climbs everyone starts attacking and Ipsen was caught unaware waiting for Kessiakoff to bring him fresh bottles for the finish. Something the Swede couldn’t manage to do as soon as the climbing began.
Willy is really struggling with this kind of climbs and both Chris and Thomas have trouble understanding the orders to stay by their captain.
Ultimately Chris is allowed to stay with the favourites while Thomas falls back to help Willy limit his losses.
Albert gives it all he has to make the break last to the end while Chris is doing good in the sprint for second place.
Meanwhile Willy gives it his last to avoid losing too much time today.

Complicated day for the guys today. At least, Chris Anker advanced a bit in GC and Novo Nordisk have 3 riders in general classification competition. Maybe they can use it for tactical advantage for the following stages. Bit gutted to see Willy lose so much time though.
