Milano - San Remo 2016
Welcome to Milano - San Remo 2016. We are live with Sporza and ready to talk you through this exciting spring day! Before going over to recorded images from the start of the race, we want to give you some favorites and what they had to say this morning!
Matti Breschel: Last year I managed to surprise the pack. I think they'll keep an eye on me this year, but I will try something nevertheless. The legs are good. Who is my favorite for the race? Peter Sagan.
Fabian Cancellara: I'm in a good shape, and I'm happy to be here. We'll see who takes the upper hand today. As usual the battle will be fought on the Poggio. Who is my favorite for the race? Someone quick.
Mark Cavendish: It's sunny so that's good. We have a strong team so I think we have a great chance today. Let's hope it comes to a sprint. Who is my favorite for the race? Démare is pretty strong lately.
Rosalbino Cau: I'm extra motivated, of course, because this is a monument and it's my home country. I hope to sprint for the victory. I hope I stomach the hills well enough to win! Who is my favorite for the race? Philippe Gilbert, if he has that punch he had last year.
Stijn Van Gent: Here I am again. After the initial disappointment of last year, I came around pretty soon. It's an amazing and historic race. I feel this WC Jersey gives me the confidence necessary to sprint for the victory. This time we have an unstoppable team. I will do everything I can today. Who is my favorite for the race? Peter Sagan, he's a monster both uphill and in the sprint.
Let's take a look at some recorded images. All riders were ready for the start of this Milano - San Remo.
It doesn't happen often but sometimes the first breakaway is the one that sticks. We're happy to give you the names: Agostini, Bailey, Lindeman, Travis Meyer and Talansky.
Then it was up to the sprinters' teams to do the work. Both the teams of Démare and Degenkolb did a lot of work during the race.
On the steeper slopes of the day, we saw a concentrated and attentive Stijn Van Gent. This is a hopeful image, at the front of the race, where he's been for most of the day.
And these are live images, and we immediately see an attack! Ladagnous and Vanbilsen trying to sneak off!
And then we see the Garmin enigma unfolded. This is amazing, they take control of the race so easily. Van Gent looks comfortable, surrounded by great talent. It's as clear as the sky which card Garmin is playing here.
We're on the Poggio now. Everything's back together. Sep Vanmarcke is doing amazing work dragging the World Champion up the hill, keeping the pace high enough to discourage any attackers. This boy deserves a raise, if you ask me.
We're now descending. The last two years we saw an attacker here, but Willy Wouters is now keeping everyone in line. He's making a tremendous effort to give Van Gent the perfect start for the sprint!
And Van Gent goes early, what an acceleration, but will it last?!
Démare is coming on his right, Cavendish on his left, only 50 meters left to go now!
OH And he does it! Van Gent, our very own World Champion, wins Milano - San Remo and thus his first monument here, what a sprint!
Cavendish on two, Démare on three, what a podium! But it's Stijn Van Gent that wins, that's all that matters. Life-long friend and team mate Wouters doesn't know what hit him, the whole team is so relieved, you can just see that!
There is no stopping this Stijn Van Gent. We are looking for a first reaction now. First, here is today's result.
We make our way through all the press and arrive at the riders' tent. Van Gent is still surrounded by a whole bunch of people, but we have Mark Cavendish here, the number two. Mark, any comment?
Mark Cavendish: I'm real disappointed in the team here. On the poggio I was isolated and had to do it myself. Real disappointed.
We move on and see Willy Wouters. Willy, how does it feel?
Willy Wouters: It's just so amazing. We're in this winning flow and it seems never-ending. The whole team is blooming and riding to its full potential. We worked hard today and Stijn is the strongest finisher I've ever seen. When he sets his mind to something, I don't think anything or anyone can stop him.
Thank you. And now there's the winner of the day, Stijn Van Gent! Stijn, one word for you: monument.
Stijn Van Gent: [laughs] Monument. I'm just ecstatic right now. So much is happening lately. Since that World Championship, everything is going right. I'm almost literally floating. And, of course, the team does so much. They are there every step of the way. It's like a dream and I don't want to wake up.
Let's hope the dream continues towards the Ronde, right?
Stijn Van Gent: At the moment I just want to enjoy this. But unfortunately there isn't much time. The cobbled season is at our doorstep and I am fully prepared. I will not start in Dwars Door Vlaanderen now, but will start in E3, without doubt. But for tonight, the world is mine, and I want to enjoy that the best way possible!
Of course. Enjoy every second of it!
Stijn Van Gent: Thank you!
Well, a different Stijn Van Gent than last year. This time a convinced winner, a World Champion, writing history. We have to leave the air now, thank you for being here with us!

Nice win for Mr Van Gent! He certainly doesn't seem to feel the effect of the "WC Curse" Perhaps a victory to come in RvV or even Roubaix?

Nice win for him!! But as I look on the riders, I think I find some of them dissapointed, like Rojas Gil(28) and Sagan (12). Maybe they just didn't have that great time as Garmin, and that's why they didn't do well?

admirschleck - Thanks! Does it ryhme? Maybe in your language
Miguel98 -
TimoCycling - Stats in spoiler!
FreitasPCM - Sure are
MrUfo87 - Thanks!!
PCM rulezz - Especially if it's a first monument
wogsrus - I hope so, too! Thanks
rogvi97 - Well, you fooled me, I thought you were daggen
baggieboys32 - A victory in either RvV or Roubaix would be the icing on the cake!
Jakstar22 - Thanks
kqyt - I guess some are peaking later in the season. Sagan probably for the Ardennes and the Tour, Rojas maybe the Vuelta or something. Also, Sagan had Cau as a team mate, the stronger sprinter.
Ollfardh - What curse?
marcovd - Thanks
Jesleyh - Cobbled Monument is definitely the big goal now!!
Thanks for the massive support! Stijn's really racing to his fullest potential now!
Today I have to do some things, but I'll try to race E3 before dinner time and maybe Gent - Wevelgem after, but I can't promise anything!

Slagter is a great rider! And you just gave us two stats of Willy Wouters. And Van Gent did what Cavendish failed: winning Milan - San Remo in the world champion jersey.
