Can anyone explain to me how in the heck's name did Serbia get 3 places for the world championships?
We have I guess 5 or 6 riders riding for teams like Sparta Praha, Centri dela Calzatura, etc.,and a former (2007.) Elite "B" world champion Ivan Stevic, but I don't realy see how they managed to come up with 3 spots in the WC.
I'm astonished!

Because they're 22nd in the UCI Europe Tour with 357 points. That gives them 3 riders

damn, 22nd out of 36, not too bad for a country where cycling is developed like the Burkina Faso economy
(no offence to the Burkinese )

You mean the guy who's still riding despite having been given a life time ban? |

As far as I know it, he rides only for the Serbian national team, he has a victory at the NC this year, and he has ridden Tour of Serbia which is a 2.2 continental race.
I don't know how that really works. He was banned in Italy by the CONI in the Oil for Drugs case, which means all the olympic comitees around the world have also banned him, but on the other hand he still has a Serbian licence and is eligible to ride in Serbia.
Which doesn't explain how he was able to ride in Slovakia last month, again in the national team colours.

Exactly We ran into the problem when making the DB. He has a life time ban from UCI, yet he still rides. And he's the Serbian champion too.
We ended up leaving him out, though. |

Seems like Rob Ruijgh is finally on his way on becoming a professional. Last year it looked like he lost his way after not riding much with Sparkasse and turning down offers from other pro teams because he already had a family, but now he is stagair at Vacansoleil and doing well, even if it's not in his type of races (he is a climber, and now rides a lot of 1 day classics)
If anyone wants to know what kind of talent he was/is:
Giro delle Lunigiana 2004, a race won by Cunego, Nibali, Kolobnev, Simoni, Bruseghin and others in the past:
1 Rob Ruijgh Nederland EL2 09u54'24''
2 Hector Gonzalez Baeza Spanje EL2 op 0'01''
3 Ben Hermans België EL2 op 0'44''
4 Cyril Gautier Frankrijk EL2 op 0'54''
5 Roman Kreuziger Tsjechië EL2 op 1'01''
Probably some people remember him as a good climbing talent in PCM Spain DB and PCM Daily DB's
Well, the talent is still there. I really hope he breaks through next year at Vacansoleil, he is still only 22 |

Lance sent out a tweet about a bike ride with fans in Ireland.
1000 people showed up.
Best line from the (admittedly unimportant) story:
After a lap and a half alongside Mellow Johnny, diving into corners and dodging wayward riders, I ask the all important question. “Look Lance, I seem to be going pretty well here for the last lap or two. How about a contract with Radioshack next year? I know I’m a bit old at 40, but ...”
“Nah, you’re not too old,” smiles Armstrong. “We like old guys on our team. Like I said earlier in the week, I think we’re gonna have to sign a couple of ten year olds to lower the average age ... I think we got a couple of spots open.”

Also of note, George Hincapie lost his only teammate in the US Championships when Craig Lewis came down with the Swine Flu (H1N1).
This is of special note to me in that Lewis is a resident of Greenville, South Carolina... which is where I live (the handle I use stands for Kurt in SC... South Carolina). So "YAY"... we've got the swine flu.
Hope it doesn't spread through the cycling world. |

There's a very easy to use search function on this website. Use it. Or failing that, just don't post any news.

Ah well.
Read it in the local paper... as the first confirmed case in the Greenville-Spartanburg area, it's somewhat of a big deal outside of the cycling impact. There's some additional irony as the Greenville Hospital System is one of the sponsors of the event.
Free flu tests for all riders? Everyone gets a surgical mask for the race?
Perhaps there are some other marketing opportunities. |

Say what you want about how the riders Ruben says are good are good, but they usually are. Ruben is normally pretty good at predicting Dutch talent (maybe a little less successful at predicting foreign talent, but good with the Dutch none the less) |
