Tour de Suisse

Stage 1: Strasbourg - Soleure
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0026.jpg

Relatively flat stage. A strong wind today of 50km/h in some parts. The peloton lets no early attacks get away and the winds lead to many splits as breaks are chased down. The effort puts a lot of stress on the peloton, but finally things calmed down.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0027.jpg
First break to get away occurs at the 2nd sprint. A combination of sprinters and tag-alongs keep going after sprint is finished and the peloton lets them do so. Sprinters such as Boonen, Ciolek, Sutton and Bazayev are here: 21 riders in all.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0028.jpg
The peloton never lets the break get more than a 1'40" lead but has a very hard time closing the gap. Little by little, the breakaway is reeled in, however with 4.3 km to go a group of 8 still has a 1 minute lead. There are all sprinters here: Ciolek, Sutton, Sanderson, Bazayev, Morkov, etc.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0029.jpg
Bazayev appears to win the stage, however for some reason Morkov is awarded the win with Bazayev second.

Oops, turns out that the game is still set on hard. So, the Tour de Suisse will actually be the first race run on extreme, not the Dauphine. Thought that was a bit too easy.

Haven't checked out this forum for quite some time, but I quite like this story. It's a bit Guido'ish.

Thanks. Guido has been one of my favorites to read so I guess I shouldn't be surprised if there is some degree of resemblence. His stories are much better than mine, though.

Stage 2: Soleure - Langnau ITT

Long ITT today, should have major impact on overall standings and set the tone for the rest of the race.

Stage 3: Aigle - Ruines de Rionda
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0014.jpg

Shaping up to be a pretty brutal mountain stage today.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0015.jpg
Tony Martin is the first to launch an attack up the very aptly named, Ascension vers les Ruines de Rionda.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0016.jpg
Elias Morca is keen to stay in the yellow jersey, and quickly counters.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0017.jpg
All of the race favorites jump in. Pliuschin and Iduriaga here.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0018.jpg
Schleck and Mollema as well as others.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0019.jpg
Morca's attack was the most powerful, and he has quickly established a 1'10 lead over the closest competitor.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0020.jpg
E2 is Tony Martin.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0022.jpg
E3 is 19 seconds back of Martin and includes Deignan, Schleck, Serpa, Casanova, Pliuschin, Redondo, Gesink, Mollema, Iduriaga and Joly. Schleck shows his fitness levels, again, by being quickly dropped from the group. We order Casanova to continue without him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0023.jpg
E3 soon catches Tony Marin but is now 2'23 behind Morca.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0024.jpg
Matthew Lloyd has come out of nowhere to catch E2.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0025.jpg
Tough stage, hot day and riders begin to run out of gas. Casanova, Mollema and Martin are all dropped.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0026-1.jpg
Pliuschin is dropped.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0027-1.jpg
Well ahead, Morca crosses the finish line for a truly impressive solo win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0028-1.jpg
Meanwhile, Lloyd is dropped.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0029-1.jpg
Gesink is a casualty, not far from the finish line.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0030.jpg
With hardly any of the large group of competitors left, Philip Deignan limps across the finish to take second. Serpa will finish 3rd.

This has been a truly difficult stage. 24 riders were unable to make the time cut and have been disqualified, most crossed the line with no energy left. Morca establishes a huge lead.

Stage 4: Bulle - Rapperwil
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0030-1.jpg

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0031.jpg
With 10km to go one member of the day's break, Ondrej Sosenka, has a 2 minute lead and a shot at the stage win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0032.jpg
Within the pack, over the last 10 km we get a series of falls - a bit of a domino effect at play. A large number of riders go down including many of the favorites: Morca, Gesink, Pliuschin. Our own Yaroslav Popovych goes down as well. No time loss for anyone.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0034.jpg
Up front, it is heartbreak for Sosenka as he is swallowed up a mere .2 km from the finish.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0035.jpg
Alex Rasmussen goes on to win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0036.jpg
Disaster for us. Popo can't get started again and he is out injured. This is a big blow to our Tour de France plans, where he was likely to be lieutenant to Schleck.

Stage 5: Horgen - Gletsch
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0037.jpg

Will be intresting to see if any of the leaders are suffering from yesterday's crash.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0039.jpg
We decide to be the aggressor on the Furkapass today. Casanova launches the first attack. Morca follows with Schleck right behind him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0040.jpg
A host of others, including Redondo, Rey, Mollema, Serpa, Deignan, Pliuschin, Martin and Gesink follow as well.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0042.jpg
Once again, Morca is the strongest and is in front on his own.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0043.jpg
Trailing him by 1'12" is a group of Redondo, Schleck, Casanova, and surprisingly enough, Rey.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0044.jpg
A further 21 seconds back, we find the rest of the favorites.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0045.jpg
Inevitably, Rey is dropped by E2 and caught by E3.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0046.jpg
Morca crosses the peak on his own with a 2 minute lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0048.jpg
E2 and E3 come together during the descent.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0049.jpg
Morca navigates the descent without a problem and takes yet another solo win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0050.jpg
Iduriaga takes the sprint to finish 2nd.

Stage 6: Ulrichen - Oberalppass
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0051.jpg

Heavy duty mountain stage, not for the light hearted.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0052.jpg
Morca launches the initial attack up the Sustenpass. Isn't this guys lead big enough already?

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0053.jpg
For the first time in this tour, Morca has failed at something and is caught by the pack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0054.jpg
Now it is Pliuschin's turn to try.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0055.jpg
Redondo counters with Gesink right behind him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0056.jpg
Morca and Schleck go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0057.jpg
A new story today, Redondo has the strongest attack and is on his own.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0058.jpg
1'23 back is a group of 10: Pliuschin, Schleck, Morca, Deignan, Lloyd, Mcleod, Gloor, Mollema, Orozco and Iduriaga. Some new names in this group, but they won't be able to hang with others for very long.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0059.jpg
58 seconds further back, Serpa and Martin are stuck in a group of 17. If they are not careful, they could suffer large time losses today.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0060.jpg
As expected, McLeod, Gloor and Orozco have been dropped from E2, which now contains 7 guys and trails Redondo by 2'17".

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0061.jpg
Redondo hits the Oberalppass. He has to climb all the way up on his own, a daunting task.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0062.jpg
As E2 hits the Oberalppass, Mollema attacks and gets some distance on the others.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0063.jpg
Matthew Lloyd attacks.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0064.jpg
Finally a chink in Morca's armor. He is dropped.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0066.jpg
Spoken too soon. He digs deep and manages to get back to the group.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0067.jpg
Up ahead, Redondo crosses the line for a solo victory. Finally a mountain stage where Morca does not win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0068.jpg
Mollema holds his advantage and finishes 2nd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0069.jpg
Lloyd is caught and in a sprint finish, Pliuschin takes 3rd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0005-1.jpg
Andy Schleck launches the initial attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0006-1.jpg
Morca is quick to counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0007-1.jpg
Gesink and Pliuschin go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0008-1.jpg
Followed by attacks from Iduriaga, Martin, Serpa, Mollema and Deignan.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0009-1.jpg
Redondo is the last to counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0010-1.jpg
Gesink has launched the strongest attack and he catches Joly.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0012-1.jpg
Mollema is 26 seconds back.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0013.jpg
A further 54 seconds back, we find everyone else.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0014-1.jpg
Schleck is not at his best today and he is dropped, alongside Joly who could not keep up wtih Gesink.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/TD%20Suisse/PCM0015-1.jpg
Gesink has little trouble in holding his front position and cruises in for the win.

Mollema holds off the chasing group for 2nd.
