Giro d' Italia - Stage 11
Todays stage is a mix of a bit of a mountain and then some hills towards then end.
Astarloza is VERY close to top condition, so if anyone tries something today, we're gonna try and go with them.
103km to go, Landaluze tried to go out for some KoM points today. But Botcharov up front rode so hard that he had to let go. He was afraid of never making it home!
Auge carries our wounded warrior up the mountain.
Bothcarov just kept on riding, at 50km to go the peleton catches it's first glimpse of him. Valiant effort!
Botcharov isn't reeled in untill 25 to go. We're coming up on the final climb of the day.
Lots of 2nd hand puncheurs try their luck at it, Astarloza awaits an attack from a favorite.
And gets it! Gilbert, Ricco and Astarloza are off! 11km to the line!
4km to go, we've not looked back yet but there has to be a gap! Astarloza places himself on Ricco's wheel. Gilbert has a gap!
1700m, Ricco and Gilbert are too fast for Mikel. But Ricco wont take time on us at least!
Ricco manages to pass Gilbert for the stagewin, what a ride by Ricco... so much power! But look, the rest of the pack has a gap! We'll take a little time on everyone today.

Giro d' Italia - Stage 12
Flatter than flat today. This ought to suit Fernandez! He's really hoping to show what he can do before his chance is up.
Halgand and Rebellin are out on the attack today. As you can see from the profile they have got a nice large gap to the peleton. The sprinterteams must be getting ready to do their thing and work this back in.
Turns out.. noone felt like working today! At 23km to go Rebellin and halgand still hold an 8 minute lead! Someone fell asleep in their teamcars apparently!
Rebellin and Halgand negotiate their last turn before the homestretch. They can hardly believe their eyes as they look back and can't even see the peleton!
Rebellin takes it by an inch in front of Halgand. Another group between these two and the peleton also make it in. Apparently we took an extra rest day today.

You had a unique chance to do something with a non-exhausted Fernandez and didn't take it? what gives?
saving the helpers for Astarloza?

Giro d' Italia - Stage 13
More or less a copy of yesterdays stage. Yesterday was weird.. and there's some chance that the same will happen today i guess. But we're not gonna worry too much about it if it does. We don't have the people on the flat to control such a stage. Not without exhausting everyone unneccesarily.
At 80km the breakaway has a 12 minute lead. This could be a repeat of yesterdays proceedings. If it is, we'll try and see what Fernandez is up to in when the pack sprints.
With 27km to go it was clear, the peleton only just started working now and i reckon that was just to make the sprint tough. There must've been some tired captains out there!
1800m to go for the breakaway, they'll settle this amongst themselves.
Krivtsov didn't play any games, no following anyones wheel or nothing. First of the bat, straight to the line. Another stage for AG2R.
In the peleton we've placed ourselves on Freire's wheel. And once again our position looks good. Fernandez isn't worn out, this could turn out good!
Freire goes, Fernandez follow, Bennati is on his own on the right, Napolitano coming onto Fernandez wheel. This is wide open!
But Freire distances himself, simply too strong, Napolitano manages to just squeeze past Fernandez and stay there. Bennati for once doesn't have any miracles in his bag. A little redemption for Fernandez as he at least shows the other sprinters that's he's not dead and gone.
Stage
1 Yuri Krivtsov AG2R La Mondiale 4h24'14
2 Tomas Vaitkus Astana Cycling Team s.t.
3 Mikaël Chérel Française des Jeux s.t.
4 Daniele Nardello Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - Androni Giocattoli s.t.
5 Stefan Schreck Gerolsteiner s.t.
6 Marco Corti Barloworld + 36
7 Óscar Freire Rabobank + 6'31
8 Danilo Napolitano Lampre s.t.
9 Koldo Fernández de Larrea Euskaltel - Euskadi s.t.
10 Daniele Bennati Liquigas s.t.
Points
1 Alejandro Valverde Caisse d'Epargne 1 109
2 Paolo Bettini Quick·Step 2 75
3 Daniele Bennati Liquigas 6 68
4 Robert Hunter Barloworld 4 59
5 Damiano Cunego Lampre 0 51
6 Riccardo Riccò Saunier Duval - Scott 0 51
7 Erik Zabel Team Milram 0 49
8 Davide Rebellin Gerolsteiner 0 47
9 Patrice Halgand Crédit Agricole 0 42
10 Philippe Gilbert Française des Jeux 0 42
(Comment: I think these two stages are bugged. The peleton did start working, but it was way too late. It was like the AI thought we were only halfway through. Can someone try this by simming a giro and riding these two?)
Oh.. and mountains are next |

It's just like in real life.. Sometime you also see this in the Giro, TdF or La vuelta .. If the riders that breakaway are behind with 30 minuts or more in GC they just let them ride for the stagewin without putting too much effort in catching them again.. This has happend a lot of times in TdF .. |

sad but true I think on yahoo somebody was saying that now that the pelaton is cleaner the team canot mannage to reel the brekaway in because they leave them such a long leach
which is good as now the breakaway might make it unlike before where it would always get caught

nah, history shows us that in times of low doping, breaks make it much more.
look at the 2001 tour. by the admission of many involved, the peloton was almost clean the first week. look at how many breaks made it.

Giro d' Italia - Stage 14
We're into the mountains! Astarloza has peaked too, it couldn't be better!
Less talk.. more riding
Lots of attacks on the first small climb. Only Pelizotti manages to get away out of the notable names. I'm a bit worried about letting him ride away like this but it's just not my responsibilty to keep a leash on him. We're coming up on the short but steep climb that leads us up to this years first real mountain.
Not much changes untill we hit the foot of the big climb. We barely make it onto the mountain before Ricco attacks! Cunego goes too! Astarloza stays with the pack. We just felt it was too early.
Ricco and Cunego are together now and they're powering up the mountain. However, there is still a huge pack chasing them, and we can't afford to waste our strength at this point.
Valverde goes too! Ricco and Cunego try to stay away from him! Anton is working in the pack now and we manage to hold them within relative safe distance. 8,4km to the top!
Popovych and Pfannberger have gone too. Anton and Sørensen are working hard in front. Astarloza seems to be in good shape today and isn't suffering a lot. Valverde and Ricco lead the charge now with Popo and Cunego behind.
Ricco has left Valverde up front, Cunego is chasing Valverde. Anton ahs run out of power and we can no longer hold them at bay. 1,1 to the top.
Coming down the other side a small pack of roughly 15 riders chase. Out in front are; Pelizotti, Ricco, Valverde, Cunego. Pelizotti has a huge gap, and it looks like he's been let back in the GC.
As we hit the bottom, Nibali attacks.. Astarloza counters! It's all or nothing now!
He distances the rest of the 15 man group and is quickly coming up on Cunego.
Popvych is hanging on for dear life as Astarloza sets a steady pace. Cunego and Valverde are coming within range as we've begun the last climb to the finish.
Ricco and Pelizotti are on their own. Noone will catch them today. Cunego is still a good ways in front but we're coming up on pink jersey wearer Valverde. Has he cracked?! 3,7 to the top!
We've stayed on Valverdes wheel for a while, but he seems like he's going as fast as he can... Popovych wont be doing anything. Time to take our chance, we've a tiny bit of strength left in our legs to try and take a little time on Valverde!
Meanwhile, Riccardo Ricco finishes 2'36 after Pelizotti. Astarloza has managed to get a gap to Valverde behind them and is sprinting to catch Cunego!
Almost! We manage to finish just behind Cunego for little to no loss. Ricco took a lot of time on us, about 1'30 but we've taken some time on the pink jersey!

Reaction
What a stage! We're happy about our own performance. And it's really close in the GC! However, Pelizotti was let back in, and is now really close to us. And it's just one more competitor we have to deal with. Popovych is 5th in the GC, but he's 5 minutes away! It's beginning to look really good for our top5 ambitions! Dare i even say it, maybe a podium. With 2 timetrials left, Pelizotti and Ricco will lose some time still. We will have to hang on for dear life in the mountains though.
Tomorrow.. the queen stage! |

Remember: don't give up. In my Giro, Kirchen was in pink from the start, came into the final TT with an advantage that was double what he lost in the first (longer) ITT and still lost the Giro by 8 seconds.
So it ain't over 'till it's over

Giro d' Italia - Stage 15
The queen stage. It's all mountains today! Mikel will have to be at his best to follow the mountaineers today!
As we come to the foot of the 2nd climb, a warning of things to come! Mikel isn't feeling too good today, and Cunego goes on an early raid! We're instantly worried that he'll pull a Pellizotti. But we simply don't have the manpower to stop him!
At the foot of of the next big climb, Mikel is sitting with Valverde and Ricco. If they go, we'll be forced to go with them!
Everyone is still behaving with 70km to go... this could blow up any minute!
And we're forced into action as the favorites attack! Unable to follow Ricco and Valverde we set our own pace for the remaining 4.6km of this climb. This is gonna be a REAL tough day.
Coming down on the other side. Cunego, Ricco, Valverde and Pelizotti are ALL out in front. This could spell disaster for Astarloza!
Last climb of the day. The other favorites are not far oss. But we simply cannot empty our reserves. We'll have to stay at a comfortable pace or risk hitting the wall! 10km to go and Cunego is definately back in it.
7,5km to go and our patience is starting to pay off, we're gaining a little bit all the time as people in front of us start to burn out.
Valverde is RIGHT there.. but we simply cannot go faster! It's absolute torture by now.
Cunego has a commanding lead. Next in line are Piepoli and Ricco. The GC could be turned upside down today!
With 2,9 to go Valverde is just 40 second ahead of us. But Mikel is starting to look really tired. It's all about damagecontrol now.
1500 meters in. The gap to Valverde is steady. But Cunego has allready crossed the line!
Piepoli and Ricco are next. We're gonna lose more than 2 minutes to these two.
A tired Astarloza hauls himself over the line in 10th place with Nibali and Schleck. This definately wasn't our day as nothing went right.

Reaction
It's a mixed bag today. We dropped 3 spots in the GC. Mikel simply wasn't strong enough to follow their attacks all the way and was left struggling to catch up for half of the day. But after 1 ITT and 2 big mountains we're 5th, and a comfortable 5th at that. We're trailing by 2 minutes 38 seconds to the top spot. I think that all in all, we can be very proud of ourselves. We've still got 2 ITT's and 2 mountainstages left. Let's see how that turns out before we celebrate anything.
The most menacing thing about today was that the pace was so high that a lot of riders fell for the timelimit. Including a whopping 4 from us. Landaluze, Irizar, Koldo Fernandez and Isasi. The'll be missed for the rest of the race. |
