Four days of Dunkirk
May 5th, 2014 : Stage 2
Berk-sur-Mer – Montreuil-sur-Mer: 180.2 kms - Flat
The second of five days in the Four days of Dunkirk features another flat stage though again the finish is very uphill and could present challenges to the pure sprinters.
A large breakaway of 11 riders is set to go early on stage two. This creates problems for the race leaders, Movistar, and race favorites BMC.
As the race gets closer to the finish the peloton still is short of the breakaway, and so Fabian Cancellara takes up the chase... then rides right off the front of the peloton.
And then right off the front of the breakaway...
However we do get a sprint finish after Cancellara is caught, though he does a remarkable job setting up team-mate Greg Van Avermaet for the win ahead of Marco Haller (Katusha) and Jens Keukeleire (Orica).

Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid
May 5th, 2014 : Stage 1
Casa de Campo: 7.7 kms - Flat (ITT)
Stage one of this two day race is a short 7.7km prologue though it is classified as flat, there is a climb in the middle of the stage that does award category 3 KoM points to the rider with the top time crossing it.
The best time from an early start was set by Sébastian Rosseler (Garmin) who would finish four seconds off the pace in 3rd overall.
The surprise of the day, and perhaps the best placed of the serious contenders is the young Wilco Kelderman (Blanco) who finished 2nd only two seconds behind.
On the bad side of surprise was race favorite Tejay Van Garderen who only managed 23rd overall, and is 18 seconds back of the lead.
The winner of the stage was Jonathan Castroviejo (Movistar) who finished the 7.7kms in 10'17" and will hold the lead going into tomorrows mountainous stage.

Four days of Dunkirk
May 6th, 2014 : Stage 3
Poperinge – Reningelst: 178.3 kms - Flat
Stage three at Dunkirk is a 9 lap circuit featuring a short climb each lap. Normally I would guess this is okay for the sprinters, but so far this race the tempo has gone too high late in the race for the pure sprinters to come into the finish with anything left.
A small four man breakaway gets set off, in the group is Julien Bérard (AG2R), Julien Fouchard (Cofidis), Vegard Stake Laengen (Bretagne), and Ben Day (UHC).
For most of the race the chase was lead by Orica, Movistar and Argus, with some help from Henning Vatne of BMC.
As the stage reaches conclusion though a large BMC train forms to finish bringing in the breakaway and to set themselves up for a sprint.
The race was won in an incredibly close sprint between Gediminas Bagdonas (AG2R) and Greg Van Avermaet with Francisco José Ventoso (Movistar) finishing third.

May 6th, 2014 : Stage 2
Taranto – Brindisi: 214 kms - Flat
Stage two is a chance for the sprinters to show their stuff on a very flat day. This is all part of a long tour so expect to see the main contenders stay safely tucked away.
It would be a rough day for breakaways as none were ever really let go, though this group of 6 riders did manage to pull out around two minutes over the peloton at one point.
With no breakaway ahead though for the intermediate sprint, a showdown of favorites would happen as John Degankolb (Sky) would take the most points ahead of Matthew Goss (Orica) and Daniel Oss.
The rest of the race would stay fairly controlled up to the sprint with the major teams of Orica and Lotto would form up their sprint trains. Leading out for Goss and Greipel respectively.
Orica would get it right, with Goss getting the win. Tyler Farrar (Radioshack) finished 2nd and Arnaud Demare taking 3rd on the stage.

Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid
May 6th, 2014 : Stage 2
Colmenar Viejo – Puerto de la Morcuera: 183 kms - Mountains
The 2nd of two stages in this race, this time finding the mountains which will most likely decide the overall winner of the race. With several significant climbs this will be a test for all of the major riders and how much depth they have on their respective teams.
A decent sized early break gets rolling, and is lead on the climbs by Gregory Brenes who would quickly take maximum points on the peaks.
He would do so well, that before the large cat.1 climb he would simply ride the breakaway off of his wheel, and go for the rest of the stage solo.
An attack over the large climb sees some elite riders join with the remnants of the early breakaway, with Nieve (Euskaltel) and Quintana (Caja) being the key riders in the group still well behind Brenes.
Brenes would finally be caught as the attacks came hard and fierce on the cat.2 climb just before the climb to the finish. But he had done enough to secure the KoM jersey at the end of the day.
Attacks on the final climb were common, though few had any real power. The strongest this move from Giampaolo Caruso (Katusha) would move him well out front.
However a stead pace from Wilco Kelderman (Blanco) would catch him, as Tejay Van Garderen also worked on moving up after a bad day in the TT yesterday.
The finish would be for Kelderman who caps off a great race. Tejay Van Garderen would take 2nd able to get by Caruso who took third.

Giro d'Italia
May 7th, 2014 : Stage 3
Brindisi – Pisticci: 186.1 kms - Hills
Welcome to stage three of the Giro d'Italia. The race for the GC can start today as there is a moderate bit of climbing, including a sharp uphill finish. It is highly unlikely the race can be won today, but a bad day here could certainly make losing the race far more likely.
A group of eight riders forms the break of the day, and the peloton was none to pleased never letting them get more than about three minutes ahead and always keeping a high tempo.
Attacks in the later part of the stage are both weak and rare, though this one by Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha) puts a bit of scare in to the field, though it was only a half-hearted effort perhaps just testing the legs out a bit.
The big surge would come from this attack by Rigoburto Urán (Sky) and would be followed by basically anyone considered a race favorite including Astana's defending champion Vincenzio Nibali.
Urán would go on to win the stage followed by Damiano Cunego (Lampre) and Igor Antón (Euskaltel) along with six others that would finish in the same time. A small gap of 38" for previous race leader Taylor Phinney who would have to give up his jersey to Urán.

Four days of Dunkirk
May 7th, 2014 : Stage 4
Graveline – Cassel: 181.8 kms - Hills (Cobbles)
One of the most brutal stages of any race is this route mostly in the town of Cassel. A 10 lap circuit featuring two climbs, the later adding in cobbles to make the race incredibly difficult.
A very large 13 rider breakaway would be allowed to get off the front, with BMC in control of the peloton and an incredibly challenging stage the threat was not too great.
BMC would be at the front of the peloton all day, here with Alexandre Kristoff leading the pace and former Danish national champion Sebastian Lander working with him.
The race would see domination from Greg Van Avermaet and Fabian Cancellara though as their help of Michael Schär and Marcus Burghardt are left behind struggling with others to stay in with the pair.
Though in the closing stages of the race it became perfectly clear, the two could do whatever they wanted and no one could keep up. When they finally made their move together they left all others.
Fabian would be nice, and let Greg roll up to the line first, gifting him the win and in all likelihood the overall after tomorrows sprint stage as reward for all the hard work the Belgian did during the classics season.

Four days of Dunkirk
May 8th, 2014 : Stage 5
Bétune – Dunkerque: 180.3 kms - Flat
The closing stage at Dunkirk is a race with a little bit of casual road racing before entering a eight lap circuit in Dunkirk. The flat stage only features one KoM climb and that is a category four. The sprinters will be happy to have the cobbles and hills of yesterday gone as they certainly go for the win today.
Fabian Cancellara pulls of a tricky move getting out ahead early to capture the KoM points and take control of that jersey for himself after working for Greg Van Avermaet yesterday.
He had no real aspirations of being in the break of the day though as three riders make it their own, Brian Vandborg of Cannondale, Juan José Oroz with Euskaltel and Giovanni Bernaudeau for Jean Delatour.
The sprint teams though would take control at the end with three distinct sprint trains forming. With BMC on the right of the road, Argos in the middle and Orica on the left of the road.
However the victor would come from none of those teams as Francisco José Ventoso of Movistar would take the win ever so slightly ahead of Jens Keukeleire (Orica). In third would be Tom Veelers of Argos.

Yea, they did what they were supposed to. In fairness my team was significantly stronger than any other team there though.

Giro d'Italia
May 9th, 2014 : Stage 4
Matera – Foggia: 168.6 kms - Flat
Stage four of the Giro comes after a rest day as the race continues up the east coast of the country. The route is flat, though the finish is on a long uphill drag. This could be an interesting day for a breakaway if the sprinters don't think they would be too keen on this style of sprint.
A group of four riders makes up the breakaway for the day, though there was a thought about a possibility that a victory might come from them, the sprint teams would bring them back.
The two major sprint trains would come from Lotto and Orica once again, though the Lotto train certainly provides the better leadout today.
And Andre Greipel rewards the team for that great leadout, easily taking the victory over Arnaud Demare (FDJ) and Matthew Goss (Orica).

Giro d'Italia
May 10th, 2014 : Stage 5
Luccera – Sulmona: 216 kms - Hilly
Our second really hilly stage doesn't look to provide any significant gaps as the climbs are too hard, and a fairly large group of good riders will probably sprint out for the finish at the end of the final descent for a stage win.
Only three riders are able to get out in the breakaway, led by Astana's Andrey Kashechkin, including Ivan Santaromita and Saxo-Tinkoff's Chris Anker Sørensen.
Sørensen doesn't seem to like the company though and make a move to go for a solo victory thinking this might be the stage the peloton is willing to let a breakaway go.
Kashechkin follows, and the pair put up a very good fight but a move from Cadel Evans ruins their plans as he rides off the front of the peloton and puts in his own tempo.
Cadel pulls off the feat, staying ahead of the chasing peloton which seemed to have little regard for him leaving. A bunch sprint for 2nd would be all they had left to fight for.
