Shonak - Stybar especially. He's at 80 cobbled at the moment
French teams acted French
As predicted, no update today, sorry

Night of the Champagne - Part IV
All there was was darkness. Everything was infinite and nonexisting, and darkness was all there was.
Let there be light.
I opened my eyes. My mouth was very dry, it was hard to swallow.
Uh... I got my senses back. What time is it?
21:05
"What happened?"
Only now I noticed my team mates standing around me.
"You fainted, man. Are you okay?"
I stood up quickly. At 10 o' clock I had my date. I couldn't miss it this time.
"Wow, head rush."
Julien took my by the shoulders.
"Lay down a little, here in the back. I'll wake you up in time for your date."
"Okay, thanks."
And so I was off for a small nap just before my big date.
Hi there!
I'm thriller, absolutely thrilled. Over the top, a little bit.
The reason why? Isn't it obvious?
Tomorrow is the start of the Vuelta a España, and I made the squad! So tomorrow I'll be racing in my very first Grand Tour, alongside my best friend Warren!
Tour of Utah
The Tour of Utah was a good experience. The big surprise was the stage win for Jamis rider Ben Jacques-Maynes ! Finishing with quite a lead, he even held a top 10 place until the very end.
My best result was the summit finish on the final day, sprinting to a 2nd place, was behind Van Garderen . I had good legs and just make the podium on the general classificaiton, outclassed by the BMC supermen.

Jeez, if that teammate doesn't wake him up... grrrr!
3rd in GC is a good sign that the form is right for Vuelta.

Dippofix - Me, too!
welker3257 - Thanks, I agree. It was especially nice to fight back after a bad start.
baia - True. Especially Maynes
duxili - BMC was too strong. He wouldn't miss the Vuelta or the date for the world
Shonak - The form is good. But 21 days of racing is truly a lot. We'll see how he managed
I will do the first two stages tonight, most probably. I have a lot on my plate. (I thought I had more time because I have a break from work, but the studying is more than ever) but I'll try to make some time!

Night of the Champagne - Part V
Wow, this was amazing. Colors were flowing together and there was a tunnel. I just knew I had to follow it. At the end, I found Lucy, she was wearing a Team Sky outfit, with some diamonds on the side.
She was cheering me on: "Henry, Henry, Henry!"
I opened my eyes slowly. "Henry?"
Heh? Lucy doesn't have a goatee. Wait a minute - "Warren?"
"Dude, you're gonna be late for your date!"
Oh no, not again! Where the hell was Julien? He was supposed to wake me up! There was no time to find out. No panic, I could make it in time if I just hurried now!
So I gathered my new jersey and got in the car.
Sigh...
I really shouldn't drive, I had way too much champagne...
Hi there!
I have to tell you, I'm not sure how much I can report from back here. A Grand Tour is crazy, let me tell you. There is no time to play around. I've had the first two stages, reporting back to you!
Before the Vuelta
The Vuelta is a milestone in my career. Ages 22, I have a chance to participate in my very first Grand Tour. It's not to be underestimated, the profile of the Vuelta is the toughest of all Grand Tours.
I don't have big ambitions coming here, to be honest. I have no GC hopes and I just want to taste how it feels, experience the Vuelta and put up a good fight.
Week 1: I fear week one will cost me a lot of time. The team time trial is not our strongest quality. The first stages I will save energy where possible. I've never raced 21 days before, so I don't mean to blow my legs in the first week.
Week 2: I will get a better view on how we're all doing. The GC will start to form slowly. By now, I will know if I can fight for a distant place (maybe top 30?) or if it's just about finishing this Vuelta alive.
Week 3: Anything is possible here. Am I far back and still alive? Then I will fight and try to get a good result here and there. Am I within striking distance for a distant GC place? Then I will fight and try to get more good results here and there!
Week 4: I will be laying on the couch, half dead.
Vuelta a España - Stage 1 A team time trial. We were not really prepared for this...
The Race
We were off to a decent start, but we couldn't hold the pace...
So... Not very good. But at least we weren't the last team!

Vuelta a España - Stage 2 Well, the Vuelta certainly doesn't keep you wait. Action! I will try to get in a good showing. But this day is very important to me: it's the first time riding around in my National Jersey!
The Race
I love this jersey so much I feel I have to show it as much as possible! This will certainly motivate me in the coming days so attack anyway!
The Vuelta doesn't keep you wait, and the favorites don't like to be kept waiting. Fireworks!
It's my first Grand Tour, first day on the road. I don't make the mistake of trying to follow and get stuck in the following peloton. I try to keep at the front, though, and profit from my good final kilometer.
Always eager to attack, Hesjedal made this attempt stick!
I'm not on the same level as those guys up front, but I put up a decent sprint and gain some time on the peloton. So at least my form is good and I'm not the worst rider here.

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
Despite the lack of good results in this Vuelta, we have reason to be happy. It's the team's very first Grand Tour. With 19 stages left there is no reason to panic. We really want to prove we're worthy of our wildcard and even of a potential World Tour spot!
So we will mainly go for a stage win or two. With this tough start, we will have to, because the GC is gone for our team.
Thank you for being here!
Henry

Hard time.
He shoudn't go on a date if he takes Warren for Lucy. And certainly not drive. Taxi may be? With all the wins he has taken down the line he can certainly afford it.

sutty68 - I'm sure he will
Thanks!
duxili - Paying for a cab can't be a problem. Though getting one in time might be... We'll see how it goes
I've done the next race but will report on it tomorrow. Got a date (with a lady in white - my guitar), so need to go!
Until tomorrow

Loosing time early on isn't the worst thing, after all one or two stage wins are much better than say a 12th spot in the GC or something.

Dippofix - That's true. But it isn't easy securing a stage win here for a 22 year old

Night of the Champagne - Part VI
I must've looked crazy, but that was just the best solution. A cyclist is a cyclist and nothing else. So in my jeans, but wearing my new jersey, I was riding through town on an old woman's bike I borrowed from a friendly old lady at the bar. I couldn't miss my date, after all!
I had to stop for a red light. There were a bunch of young guys, grouped together, maybe they were rapping or something. Suddenly one of them noticed me. "Wait a minute... Guys, look, it's Vergnaud, man!" They surrounded me and congratulated me. I was just happy they weren't out to rape me, you never know at night time in this world...
The light turned green. "See you guys, thanks for the support, I'll win the next race for you!"
21:57
I was on time.
But where was she?
Hey,
We're already a week into the Vuelta. I told you it'd be hard to report back on a daily base. It's a whole new experience for me, but I'm still alive, and more, I'm enjoying it!
Vuelta a España - Stages 3 - 7
Three hilly stages and two flat stages. Nothing major happened for me. Three things I'd like to point out.
Meeting Mark
During stage 3, I ended up next to Mark Cavendish in the first half of the race. I was surprised that he knew who I was. We chatted a little bit. He's a real warm guy, the media gives him a nasty spin but he's really all right. Good guy.
Tough days
These are tough days. I admit I have been sitting back a little bit, to see what would happen. At stage 4, when there were a lot of attacks, I sat back a bit too long.
So that evening, I sat down with coach Van Impe. He told me to get over myself, I shouldn't be afraid, I'd be able to handle the three weeks.
He told me I'd regret it if I just sat in the peloton for three weeks. It's all right to save energy, but you gotta take chances. I couldn't agree more. I'm a fighter, and so far I've been riding like a sissy.
So that brings us to stage 5...
Vuelta a España - Stage 5
The profile for this stage looked pretty good to me. A bit uphill at the end, tough enough in the middle. I was keen on finally showing myself in this Vuelta!
And I had good legs. Unfortunately, the breakaway stayed clear of the bunch and fought for the victory.
The podium was gone. I decided it was time to start working on closing the big gap I had to the leader. 3 kilometers from the finish, I attacked. Garmin was holding a tough pace at that time. I felt amazingly strong and I think I surprised many by making the attack!
In the final 400 meters, I lost a bit of my punch and they gained back some time. Not enough to take away my first top 10 in this Vuelta, though!
Yes! In the end, no time difference was appointed, but at least I had managed a 4th place in a Vuelta stage. That's a good start. Now I have two weeks left to try and do even better!

Analysis & Daily Thoughts
One week has passed, but the first rest day is still three days away. What follows now is a tough succession of mountain stages. I'm motivated to make something of it! I'm doing good now. After the initial fright of a Grand Tour, I got over myself. I'd rather empty myself trying to fight then finish 3 weeks without even trying to put in a great effort!
I will fight this weekend!
Henry
PS funny (or sad) detail: I score the first 2 WT points for our team!

Night of the Champagne - Part VII
I couldn't believe this. Was this some sort of revenge? Did she do this because I showed up late the last time? I was starting to lose hope.
Maybe the lady in red has lost its romance, no longer did it seem like a fairy tale. It had become real and too painful. This was not how it was supposed to happen.
Maybe it was time to let go...
Hey,
Two more stages completed and things are clearing up, surprisingly! First, some sad news.
After winning stage 5 in the Tour of Colorado, arguably the biggest victory of his career since the National Championships 2005, Jonas has told us and the media that he will retire right after the race. He will stay on the team as a sprinting coach.
Vuelta a España - Stage 8 A stage for the climbers. I want to try something.
The Race
Making plans and keeping them is a whole other thing, especially in a Grand Tour... I got stuck somewhere in the middle of the pack.
At the final climb, I got a little better. I organized a chase and even got a view of the group of favorites.
However, I missed the energy to get back in that group. Not a good day, but not a bad day either.

I finished 22th. Keeping the time loss limited, though.
Vuelta a España - Stage 9 I'm tired of getting stuck in the bunch. So today I want to attack!
The Race
Keen to finally show my national jersey, I started the race aggressively.
I gave it my all, but the peloton wouldn't let me go. I don't know why, but it really sucked for me.
It sucked double because the breakaway of the day would make it to the finish. I could've been there!
For me, this was a bad day. For the audience, it was a great day, though. The sprint of the favorites was amazing to watch.
However, I think that final climb is on the limit of a responsible profile, look at how steep!
Because of the attempted breakaway at the start, I lacked energy at the final climb. Luckily I didn't lose too much time.

By some miracle I am placed 22th in the General Classification!
Analysis & Daily Thoughts
Just one more stage before the rest day. We will try to make the most of it.
I'm a bit torn now. Being in a 22th position in the GC is not what I expected, and I feel like I haven't done anything to deserve it. So now I can either fight for a spot in the top 25, or lose more time and try to get a stage win..
See you tomorrow,
Henry
