We were in the unusual position of having the top three favourites, no pressure then! Izagirre was our leader given his great recent form.
Eventually an 8 man group made it away and would be joined by Ladagnous with 100 kilometres to go. We were riding on the front for much of the early part of the stage with our Aussie contingent.
With 60 kilometres to go we add riders to the front and begin cutting down the break's advantage on the hilly terrain, with little support from the Spuerkeess and Colnago teams.
With 20 kilometres to go Possoni and Velits put in a little attempt but Al Ghanim brings them back on the final climb with 11 kilometres to go.
Ladagnous is caught and that is the signal for Izagirre to attack, and what an attack it is. Fuchs, Possoni and Brambilla try to get on terms but Izagirre holds off all pursuers at the summit with 9 kilometres of descending to the finish. On the descent Brambilla is the only rider chasing hard and he might get back on terms...
But Izagirre is the better descender and will hold on for the win. Win for Qatar Optics. Bakelants also managed a top 5 after being outsprinted while Rojas didn't have the legs today. A real boost for the team we really needed that win ahead of the tour of the Basque country.
March wasn't a bad month for our team, it was just a really good month for Farnese Vini and FDJ. Farnese Vini had Masciarelli on the Tirreno podium and he also won the Coppi Bartoli, FDJ won some of the smaller French classics and Roux put in a decent performance at Paris Nice. Both teams taking several victories.
The win on the last day of the month boosted our total by a good 200 points. April is really a make or break month for us. It starts with the tour of the Basque country and will finish with the tour of Turkey, where Yildiz will be the leader, he will have to do well if he wants a place on the team next season.

The tour of the Basque country is here, personally it is one of my favourite Spanish races, if you can call it Spanish. This will be the last race for Izagirre for a while, races such as these score big CQ points so it is important the team reads the race well.
Stage 1 is a really hilly stage with terrain favouring a strong escape group.
Amidst the typical rainy April Basque weather a group of 6 riders broke away after many early attacks, we would have liked to had a man in the break but the guys weren't prepared to attack in the poor conditions.
With 90 kilometres to go on the Alto de Ubal, hardest climb of the day, three riders attacked out of the peloton. They were Martens, Albert and French champ Bardet.
With 50 kilometres to go the break was down to four riders, only Baer (Team Apple) could stay with three new attackers. With 30 kilometres to go despite decent efforts from Lampre and American Express the break still had 5:00. As riders were falling off the peloton, Rojas and Bakelants were dropped but would regroup on the final climb with 15 kilometres to go.
Out front on the lower slopes of the final climb Bardet attacks only Martens can follow, they will crest the climb and descend the final 10 kilometres to the finish together. Back in the bunch Nibali, Contador, Phelan and Izagirre attack on the descent with a host of others but will be caught by a large group of 80+ riders before the finish.
Out front Bardet outsprints Martens for the win and now holds a handy advantage over the peloton, I think he will be a tough nut to crack. Izagirre finished safely and with a lot of gas in the tank, if he is allowed to slip away in one of the upcoming stages we are in for a great tour of the Basque country.

Stage 2 is another hilly stage with last 12 kilometres being flat/ downhill, the stage most likely to favour any sprinters who are present.
On this stage an 11 man break got away, a real pick n mix break it was, it contained stage race contenders such as Kruiswijk and flat out sprinters such as Leezer, we were pleased to have Clarke in the break who continues his great form.
Like the previous day there were no teams either willing enough or strong enough to close down the break, with 20 kilometres to go the break have 3:00. However, attacks from behind really make in roads on the break's advantage.
Nibali, Contador and our man Izagirre were prominent in the attacks. By the summit of the climb with 12 kilometres to go or so, the break only had 40 seconds over the peloton, Clarke was dropped from the break on the descent. The break were caught with less than 2 kilometres to go just about. It would be a mass sprint.
Leezer was victorious. He must have really saved his energy and resisted the difficult climbs to still possess a powerful sprint come the finish, a great win for Rabobank. Our guys finished safely however Rojas suffered and didn't finish with the main bunch.

Due to count back position, Martens would now be the new yellow jersey wearer.
Another hilly stage with a very difficult last 7 kilometres going up the Alto do Usartza, before a 1km descent to the finish.
The bad Basque weather had returned. Dumoulin was the sole breakaway man until 65 kilometres to go, but he never had more than 1:30 of an advantage.
Then Hivert attacked 1 kilometre later our man Izagirre also attacked, despite being at the same time as Hivert @2:57, the peloton clearly didn't want him up the road and the peloton upped the pace which meant only 20 or so riders were left by the time the escapees were caught with 30 kilometres to go.
With 20 kilometres to go Contador attacked on the penultimate climb, his team leader Vanenedert was well down on the stage, so he had free reigns. Izagirre, was now suffering, he would be dropped on the descent.
Contador would be caught on the lower hills on the final climb by a seven man select group including three Gazprom riders and multiple classics winner Gautier, he would attack again. Contador really had the bit between his teeth and would go on to win by more than 0:50, what a show of dominance in his last season as a pro. Izagirre was our best finisher, it looks like his form is really tailing off after a successful start to the season.

The stage favourites were the same for stages 4 and 5, this typical hilly stage of the Basque region ends on the 4 kilometre steep Alto del Bardin.
After many early attempts for riders to get into a break including potential GT winner Barton, we managed to get Bakelants into the break of the day, the nine man break included F.J.Lopez (Orbea) who was in the break again and would scoop up plenty of KOM points.
However, the peloton lead by Dyson, Lampre and American Express wanted the stage today and the break would be gobbled up inside 20 kilometres to go.
To the dismay of 9/10 riders in the peloton Contador showed that he is the top dog in this race again and would win his second stage and in the process leap back into the KOM lead. A decent day for our team getting into the break, however the gulf in class in riders is evident, dare I say.

STAGE 5:Bera - Onati 163 KM's
The last road stage of the Basque country is yet another undulating stage with a downhill finish which may see a large group come to the line.
It took ages for the break to form and when it did it you had to question the logic of the peloton. They wouldn't let Haas and our man Izagirre get away but they would let Haas, multiple Giro winner Henao and quality puncheur Tsatevich get away, De Gendt and Txoperena tried but could never get to the break, go figure!
Henao attacked his fellow breakaway men with 15 kilometres to go and would hold on for the victory, the peloton finished with a group of 33 riders together including Izagirre who showed well for our sponsors.

With the Basque tour over with I realised the team needed to improve, maybe no more so than on descending where our riders were dropped multiple times. So I set up some training sessions in Murcia, Spain to focus on descending, speeds regularly over 70 km/h. Before the Klasika Primavera race the team also entered a local chilli cook off, the team came third out of dozens of entrants which was great as I don't rate any of the guys cooking!
Out in Germany under the geise of Gorik and Arni the team apparently showed well, riding on the front and having a good sprint with Lodewyck from a diminished group, who may have finished higher in the dreadful condiitons. Yildiz was one of the many who fell, lets hope he isn't injured for the upcoming tour of Turkey.
We come here with the race favourite, the hilly terrain of this stage lessens towards the finish which may suit a small break or depleted bunch, a stage tailor built for Rojas.
Early on in the hot weather a 13 man break got away, they were under control by teams such as ourselves, Euskadi and Spuerkeess until 65 kilometres to go when four riders attacked. They were Augustyn, Vandousselaere, Cieslik and our man Al Ghanim, who was feeling fantastic. They joined to make a 17 man group.
They were caught but Al Ghanim attacked again, the form really good. He would constantly hold around a :30 gap to the peloton until he was finally caught with under 20 kilometres to go, Stamm was protecting Rojas as Madrazdo attacked just before the summit of third and final ascent of the toughest climb of the stage with 15 kilometres to go, he would gain an advantage of around :35.
But Brambilla would bring him back, Marcato, Rojas and Alafaci also follow this move, it is mostly flat to the finish now. Masciarelli comes up fast from behing...
But Brambilla is doing a good leadout for Marcato and has no trouble bringing him back, Rojas is in the perfect position on the wheel of Marcato, the group now around 28 riders strong.
Rojas comes out of the wheel and will take his first win in over two years. WIN FOR QATAR OPTICS! Alafaci put it in a decent sprint and gets second but clearly no one was going to stop Rojas today, the team were overjoyed with a great day of racing, Al Ghanim madly celebrating as he crossed the line. This is a great showing ahead of Castilla y Leon.

Whilst in Spain, part of the team were representing Qatar Optics in France for the first time, if and when we race the TDF one day we can look back on this day as a landmark.
The race was won by the race favourite, but Qatar Optics showed well with another consistent finish from Lodewyck after Long was in the break all day, Yildiz continues his preparation for the tour of Turkey.
All our main rivals for world tour promotion were racing here, FDJ, as always performed extremely well in the race and now hold over 694 points advantage over us whereas Farnese Vini have around 200 points over us.

@ Sutty - I hope it isn't the last time you say that this racing month for Qatar Optics' 'leader'.
This stage is very similar to the 'Old Wilunga Hill' stage in the TDU, with three laps of a challenging hill in the last thirty kilometres, with a flat finish sprinters may have a chance.
On the stage a tough 13 man break got away, Duque(Avianca) showed his mountain legs by winning enough KOM sprints to move into the KOM lead. FDJ, Phillips and our guys, despite not being the strongest, did manage to pull back the break with 9 kilometres to go, the break did look cooked.
Coming into the sprint Rojas, wasn't feeling great today, was on the wheel of Aramendia, Sylvester and Rocchetti on Rojas wheel. When Aramendia launches his sprint so do the others. Rojas thinks this is too early and gets on the wheel of Ponzi, but by the time he gets his sprint going Rocchetti has claimed an un-expectant win for Bianchi, a podium is a decent result for us.
This stage route has its lumps and bumps but is one for the sprinters, the length of the race in the hot weather is the real killer.
A 12 man break gotaway, the team (Bianchi) of the race leader put a man in the break, so he didn't feel the need to ride, not making many allies in the break.
However, Bianchi along with FDJ, Euskaltel and Qatar Optics were among the chasers that brought the break back with 10 kilometres to go.
We had one of the sprint trains, the order was Davis, Aramendia and finally Rojas.
But once again Rojas doesn't get launched at the optimum time, Marcato raises a few eyebrows and wins from a blanket finish. Only 6th for Rojas, he will be one of the few sprinters aiming to do well on stage 3 which is for the puncheurs. Nechita, continues to be plagued by injuries, he retired during the stage.

Meanwhile in France, Oasis took the win with young rider Vergnaud taking his first pro win.
With Rojas really in form he will be aiming to do the best performances among the sprinters on this hilly stage where the steep climbs summit 40 kilometers from the end and at the end following a 12 kilometer climb.
A four man break was already established in the stage when three riders attacked out of the bunch, they were Failli, vander Lijke and Atapuma, they would bridge across to the break. With Euskaltel and Colnago driving along the peloton, Lechuga, Cardoso, Morras and Yeray Garcia also tried to attack but never made it across.
Suprisingly on the penultimate climb a good 40 kilometers from the finish Colnago and Euskaltel really up the pace, all riders are dropped bar 20, Rojas was dropped but made it back on the descent thanks to our domestiques Al Ghanim and Stamm. A lead group of 26 riders approch the final climb together after the break was caught.
Madrazdo is the first to attack, Rojas tries to go with him...but blows..
A group of four riders rode away with 5 kilometers to go on the climb, Euskaltel had the numerical advantage and it paid off with Bilbao taking the win. Craddock did brilliantly to hang on to the lead group and may take the GC lead for our rivals, Dual Temp, on the next stage. Rojas was tipped as a favourites, but the way the race was made hard from early on ended his chances, still a top 10 is a great result for someone as fast as Rojas on the flat.
This TT was one for the specialists. Could our men do a decent time?
Aramendia would put in a decent time but when King finished 19 seconds faster the enjoyment soon ebbed. At the mid way checkpoint Kadri was only '12 down on eventual stage winner and stage favourite Craddock, however, he lost much more time in the second half and Dual Temp would take over the GC lead thanks to the TT man's dominating performance around Zamora.
Rojas showed his excellent form and moves up to 6th overall and will wear the points jeresy on the final day in Leon after leading home a 6-7 for Qatar Optics on the day.
We came into this tour really confident in grabbing a victory, this flat stage was our last chance.
A 9 man break had 6:00 of an advantage with 70 kilometers to go when Caja Rural and ourselves primarily began shutting down the break of the day, Caja Rural porbably doing around 62% of the work on the front.
Late attacks by Barbero and Gasparotto(Bianchi) got nowhere, Al Ghanim, Davis and Aramendia rode well deep into the stage.
But with 10 kilometers to go the break was caught. Caja Rural were at ahead of affairs, Rojas, points jersey, was on on the wheel of Palini in 7th place as the sprint beckons.
Rojas feels he has to come out of Palin's wheel slightly early.....but it is worth as he powers through the field and has time to celebrate well before crossing the line. VICTORY FOR QATAR OPTICS. No one really looked like challenging in that, a great result for the team which makes this small tour a success. We will leave with the points jeresy, Dual Temp will take home the overall.

Hard times are here. It seems to be a distant memory, just a few months ago, when the team were near the top of the CQ rankings, but now we are 500 points adrift of Farnese Vini and 700 adrift of FDJ, due to their outstanding performances.
I'm not saying we won't get promoted but the chances of promotion this season now look very slim, especially as for the first time we are now being rejected invites to races. We will not be racing at Dunkerque, Luxermbourg or the Ronde van Belge. Hard times indeed.
