Another really difficult mountain stage, with another mountain top finish. First, we drive up the Col du Mont Cenis, but the decision will obviously be on the legendary combination Col du Telegraphe-Col du Galibier, which is in the Giro to honor Marco Pantani.
The favorites
****Chris Froome ***Ryder Hesjedal, Alberto Contador **Robert Gesink, Michele Scarponi, Vincenzo Nibali *Alejandro Valverde, Thomas de Gendt, Mauro Santambrogio, Domenico Pozzovivo

The last stage before the rest day, the riders will be relieved about that. The stage is not easy though, with first the Mont Cenis, but at the end the Telegraphe-Galibier is obviously very tough. We join you at the foot of the Mont Cenis. There is no break ahead yet, as Sky has been reeling everyone in.
It seems like only 2 riders are in the break today: Gallopin (Radioshack) and Betancur (AG2R).
The duo gets another rider with them: Pantano (Colombia).
At the top of the Mont Cenis, there is no battle: Gallopin 1st, Pantano 2nd, Betancur 3rd.
4 riders break from the pack: Astarloza, Garzelli, Moreno and Pellizotti.
At the first intersprint, Betancur 1st, Pantano 2nd, Gallopin 3rd. The gap to Astarloza is 1min30, to Moreno, Garzelli and Pellizotti 2min30 and to the pack 4min.
2 more riders break from the pack: Van Garderen and Weening are their names.
At sprint 2, Astarloza has joined the leading 3. He immediately comes 2nd, behind Pantano.
At the foot of the Telegraphe, Garzelli, Pellizotti and Moreno have joined as well. Weening and Van Garderen are 1min45 behind, the pack is 3min39 behind.
2kms before the summit, Evans decides to make his move.
At this summit, Garzelli takes the points, ahead of Moreno and Pellizotti.
With 15 kms left, we still have the same 7 riders ahead. They lead by 1min49 to Weening, Van Garderen and Evans and by 2min24 to the pack.
Another attack from the pack: Contador escapes! Evans, Weening and Van Garderen are reeled in immediately.
With 10kms left, are groups are reeled in.
With 5kms left, there everything is scattered: Hesjedal and Scarponi lead, followed by Froome, Contador and Gesink. Then we have Valverde and De Gendt. A bit behind that is a group with Nibali, Evans and Quintana.
With 3kms left, still Hesjedal and Scarponi. Gesink has been dropped by Froome and Contador.
With 2kms left, Hesjedal is out all alone. He is followed by Froome, Contador and Scarponi. Behind Valverde is out alone, followed by Gesink and De Gendt.
Going into the final kilometer, Hesjedal is still alone, followed by Froome. Contador and Scarponi have been dropped.
At the line
Hesjedal takes a well-deserved solo victory. Froome is 2nd, holding on to pink. Contador is 3rd, Scarponi 4th. Valverde holds on to 5th, 6th Gesink, 7th De Gendt and 8th Nibali. Hesjedal takes over red and blue, Quintana holds white and Blanco still the best team. Movistar and Sky have come real close though. Nizzolo, Bandiera, Veelers and Chicchi didnt make the time cut.
Well, 6 days more days have passed in this Giro, 6 very interesting days. But what actually happened these stages? Stage 10: The first mountain top finish: An elite group stayed away from the rest. In this group of 10 riders were both the maglia rosa and the winner of today: Hesjedal Stage 11: A hilly stage, where there was a battle for the GC, but not an intense one. A later break got the possibility of making it to the finish line. Brajkovic turned out the strongest. Quintana seized the white. Stage 12: A stage that is so flat, that it almost has to turn out in a mass sprint. Very surprisingly, this didnt happen so. A group of 4 just managed to stay ahead. Taborre surprisingly took the win. Stage 13: A very long stage, and very flat, apart from a few hills in the end. These hills did cause trouble to most of the sprinters. John Degenkolb had no trouble with them however and won the sprint. Stage 14: A new mountain stage, with a very steep last hill. A small break managed to stay ahead of the pack with a minimal gap. Westra turned out to be the strongest of the group. Tschopp took over blue. Stage 15: The stage to honor Marco Pantani. The rider who got honoured Il Pirata did not come from a break today. No, Hesjedal took the win with a very impressive solo. Froome still in yellow though.

Stage 17 - Flat
Stage 18 - Mountain ITT
Stage 19 - Mountain
Stage 20 - Mountain
Stage 21 - Flat Edited by Selwink on 02-07-2013 11:07
A real transition stage, probably made for a breakaway. 2 climbs have been taken into the profile. First the other side of the Mont Cenis, which is quite easy. Then the Andrate, where the decision should be. The GC riders might try something there.
The favorites:
****Sandy Casar ***Philippe Gilbert, Fabian Cancellara **Lieuwe Westra, Johnny Hoogerland, Enrico Battaglin *Filippo Pozzato, Gorka Izagirre, Fabio Taborre, Simon Geschke

Welcome to stage 16, which should be a transition stage. We have no idea who will win today, thanks to both the climbing and the will of the pack to chase. We join you with 80kms left. A break of 8 riders is ahead: Ratto (Cannondale), Ion Izagirre (Euskaltel), Voigt (Radioshack), Kruijswijk (Blanco), Nocentini (AG2R), Roux (FDJ), Lofkvist (IAM) and Pirazzi (Bardiani). They have had a lead of 8min15, but now it is 4min58.
The pack has been lead by the sprinter teams today: Orica-GreenEdge, Argos and Omega Pharma.
We have already had the ascent of the Mont Cenis: Roux 1st, Pirazzi 2nd.
We have also had an intermediate sprint already, where Lofkvist was 1st, Nocentini 2nd.
No battle at sprint 2 either, Lofkvist 1, Ratto 2nd.
At the foot of the Andrate, the gap is still 1min35.
Quite quickly Voigt is dropped from the leading group.
Then we have a surprise: GC riders on the attack: Nibali, Quintana, Contador, Gesink. Valverde, Pozzovivo and Rujano break away.
Garzelli, Basso and Hesjedal are going to chase them.
On the top of the Andrate, we have Nibali, together with Valverde and Scarponi. Behind is Contador, then a group with Froome and Hesjedal. Behind that Ratto and Evans, but already way behind. The pack is even further.
With 8kms left, Contador has joined the 3 leaders. Froome and Hesjedal are about 50 seconds behind. Evans is reaching them closely. The favorites group, consisting of 19 riders, is 2min24 behind.
With 2,5kms left, Froome and Hesjedal join the leaders, where Valverde and Contador decide to try it early.
In the last kilometer Hesjedal, Scarponi and Nibali storm by. Froome is in trouble.
At the finish line
Hesjedal wins the sprint, the bonifications and 30 seconds extra to Froome. 2nd is Contador, 3rd Nibali, 4th Scarponi and 5th Valverde. The rest loses at least 2min21. Froome does hold on to the Maglia Rosa, by just 11 seconds. Contador closes in to 1min28. Gesink drops to 7 in the GC.
