It was political... Western Europe trying to send a message to the East, the East trying to show they aren't homophobic...
Exactly how I see it. I am actually on Eastern side this time (not that I agree with most of East opinions). I never supported these meterosexuals (let call her/him like that). I mean, you're born with a penis and you're supposed to be a guy, how on earth can you transform to a girl and even keep the beard? That's just not normal. To put aside that their song was crap, compared to some other songs that were pretty low on the scoreboard at the end.
I am pretty sure Conchita used this image below as a motivation before Semi-Finals and Finals.

I don't want to brag but in the Netherlands we have many women with a mustache. Maybe we should send one of them to the Eurovision next year.

You do know it's just an alter ego? For a quite interesting cause as well.
Just picked out this roughly translated quote: "my appearance aims to make people think about sexual orientation as a whole, but also about being different itself, so that adolescents have it easier, no matter what makes them different from the others."
Sounds kinda worthy of support.

I know what's an alter ego, yes. I've nothing against being different, but pretending to be a woman with a beard and you're born as man is just not normal in my honest opinion. I maybe (as 99% of Eastern-Europeans) grew up in a pathriotic family where stuff like these are just crazy and not accepted, so that's probably one of the reasons I react like this. Not that I care about him/here that much anyways, but it's just my opinion.
Please, do not occupy Serbia because of this.

Damn, my facebook feed is "running wild" ^^ Next year Stadthalle! So proud right now!
@people from yesterday: Most of the stuff was shit, let's face it. Austria had one of three, four good songs for the mainstream, the other two being Netherlands and Sweden. It also was an unique song (bond-esque!) and Wurst/he performed it perfectly with an impressive stage setting. This is class, from Wurst and her team. There was more to the song though, of course the political side is a plus-point. It helped to engage voters. It wasn't only the singer, but the song written for Wurst portraited the desired message. People like that and people vote for that. Why wouldn't they? For once, the Eurovision at least tries to matter and deliver a message besides some "party-feeling". Not such a poor "laughing stock", but rather a bastion for positive signals. And it may sound so cliche, but music has always aspired to that: To be a bastion for the good in man.
By the way, it's obvious you need to polarize to win - or just a damn really good sogn. Similiar thing was with Lordi a couple of years ago. Basially, in my opinion, you need personality. Conchita Wurst/Tom Neuwirth has that personality and is a worthy winner, get over it. Everybody wanted an interview with him after thursday, and after thursday I had a good feeling that he'd win it. The whole hall screamed his name. It's a positive sign for tolerance, freedom and equality - and guess what, that's some of Europe's biggest strong points. Of course it cared for lots of votes. Because people care about message and music... and it's a sign that sexuality shouldn't matter so god damn much. But it also shows how far Europe has come and it's better to vote for such a thing than for... boobs.
That video by cio. Genius!
@admir: You're eastern european. It's more likely that you support the eastern european side.

It was pretty good, one of the more acceptable modern songs. We're back to anonymity as well, at least we have Lena to feed on for another while.
And regarding your question, you do know my biggest music dream is a Dire Straits reunion?
Alternatively: Genesis reunion, Pink Floyd reunion, Led Zeppelin reunion, Oasis, Deep Purple, Coldplay...
And yes, Muse would get my infinite votes.

Oh by the way, in one eastern europe country (not sure which), there's a tradition that, when there's no male caretaker anymore, a woman "strips of its gender" and becomes the "male" caretaker of the family and thus dresses and behaves like a man.

Actually, not really. I do not agree with let's say 50% of eastern european opinions, such as the political and economic strategies and stuff like that, while I totally agree with the stuff and opinions connected to gay population, meterosexuals and most of these "sex" discussions.

Definitely not the situation in Serbia, neither on Balkan. May be one of these "BlaBlastan" countries, close to Russia.

Hm, I don't think it's possible to compare political and economic education and opinions with your own cultural and sexual socialization, because the first is mostly influenced by own knowledge, school education and discussion, while the latter is based mostly influenced upon your family & country values (in my humble experience). Other than that, Romania, where I have spent a year living abroad, has given Austria 7 points, and Romania isn't really liberal.
Also, it's Albania. It's still practiced in northern Albania and with lesser extent in other balkan countries, although I'm not sure which, besides Macedonia. It has has been (or is still practiced?) in Serbia too.
https://en.wikiped...rn_virgins
Albanian sworn virgins (Albanian: burrnesha or virgjinesha) are women who take a vow of chastity and wear male clothing in order to live as men in the patriarchal northern Albanian society. To a lesser extent, the practice exists, or has existed, in other parts of the western Balkans, including Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro,[1][2] Croatia and Bosnia.

Ah, now I know what you're talking about. It's not a woman that are taking care of their families, but a woman that decides to live alone. There is only known sworn virgin in Serbia and there was a TV show about her. However, she's very old, so it looks like this weird tradition is going to stop soon. This is connected only to the south of Serbia which is on border with Albania. There's the reason why it was popular down there. I am also pretty sure that this died out in every other ex-Yugoslovenian country a long time ago.
Also, you can't really call Albania and Greece the eastern-european countries. Geographicaly, they're part of it, but in every other aspect they live in their own worlds.

Well I didn't think that it was in Serbia still practiced, the article only really mentioned northern Albania and parts of Macedonia. I still consider Albania to be a geographically part of Eastern Europe though and it's certainly not "close to Russia", like you previously claimed. In any case, it appears that Eastern Europe has been forced to be more progressive in earlier, more conservative times.
In other news: I read through some FB comments and there's a lot of hate going on actually. Also, since I come from a very conservative part of Austria, lots of people I know actually hate towards Tom/Conchita. With all that hate, especially coming from Austria too, it's a positive sign that all those haters may understand that there's nothing wrong with one's sexuality as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else.
Interesting: Apparently, Germany would have given 12 points if it wasn't for Sido in the jury.
EDIT: And if you'd count the jury decisions, Austria would have been far more ahead in apparently every country on the first look. I think Wurst has been amongst Top 5 in every televoting. Hoping that this is a good sign for the upcoming European selection.
EDIT2: Russia Televvoting apparently #3. (I actually support Putin`s claim on the Crimea)

Was it just the UK who saw Graham Norton snuck up on?
Oh, and I thought Austria utterly deserved it. Credit to ORF for sending a drag act-and giving her a half-decent song.
