Giro D'italia Stage 6

The 6th stage of the Giro D'Italia contains an uphill finish, which may start to produce some time gaps within the peloton, however, the rest of the stage is not overly complicated, so the break may be able to stay away if the riders are not considered a danger to the final classification.

Giro D'Italia Stage 7

The final day of week one, brings the shortest day of the race so far, a 97km route containing two ascents, first the Monte Taburno, offering 10 points in the KOM classification and the the final climb, which gains 700m over the course of 14.5km finishing atop the summit of Montevergine.

i43.tinypic.com/qq72aw.jpg

For Youtube-Twitter, today would be the first big day for our main riders, Sutton and Zoltan to excel themselves, though the stage may not present much opportunity to create time gaps, due to its shallow gradient.

Early on, José Alvés joined the group of breakaway riders as they moved forwards, and he was able to join a group of 9 riders who opened a gap of over 1'53" in front of the peloton. Joining him were several domestiques, and Saxobank rider, Gustav Larsson.

Giro D'Italia Stage 8
The beginning of week 2, has the feel of a continental classic to it, some sharp hills early on, and a steep sprint finish, which may create some small gaps right at the end, the only real enemy for the riders today, is fatigue, which will start to catch up on there week-used legs later on in the 213km day of racing.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Route.png

Youtube-Twitter took advantage of there strong climbing team early on in the day, coming forwards and setting a high pace through the hills, they caused several minor fractures in the peloton, though these were to come back together later on as the teams left the early steep climbs entering some gentler terrain.

Once the peloton had started to reform, there were casualties to the number of riders in the main pack at both ends, a breakaway group of 6riders got clear at the front, and at the same time a crash occurred near the back, containing several bigger name riders, all were able to rejoin teh peloton in due course, but included in the crash, were Movistar rider, Xavier Tondo, young HTC star, Tejay Van Garderen, and sprinter, André Greipel.

Acqua & Sapone also lost there leader in a crash, and were forced to drop the entire team back to help him rejoin, there were injuries suspected to the leader, and it will be interesting to see how the Italian CT team will fare in the remainder of the race if he is injured.

The breakaway was caught thanks to the chasing work of Farnese Veni, but tehy then relaxed, allowing a second stronger group to break forwards, the group quickly split however, and only one rider- Valentin Iglinsky was able to stay away from the peloton, opening a solo gap of 4'38" with 45km left to ride.

Bos was able to jump clear early in the sprint, but just wasn;t strong enough up the hill to hold on, and Damian Cunego jumped past him along with several others in the last 100m, Cunego it was, who eventually won the sprint, and takes his first stage of the race, and the 3rd for Lampre-ISD who are proving to be a seriously strong team this year in there native Grand Tour.

Overall, today was a good one for the team, we continue to hold 3 top 10 places in the GC, and our leader is well set to chase down the flying Antón, should he slip up at all in the later days of the tour, we are by far teh strongest placed CT team, and even control one of the jerseys, Alvés leads the KOM competition, something he intends to target for the remainder of the tour if possible.

Giro D'Italia Stage 9
The final day before rest number one in the Giro, brings us to on the the most famous stages in the Giro D'Italia, the double ascent of Mount Etna, another chance for all the GC favourites to make there presence felt, and we hope to take a very high placing today with our leader, Jakab Zoltan, aswell as challenge on ascent number 1, with José Alvés, looking to protect the KOM jersey.

Right from the beginning of the stage, the attacks began to flow, 2 smaller groups were brought back by the peloton before a strong group containing Alvés, as well as Popovych of Radioshack, and Gustav Larsson were able to form a gap of over 2minutes before arriving at the base of Mount Etna for the first of the 2 ascents.

As the riders began to gain height, the numbers within both the peloton and the breakaway began to reduce, up front only 3 riders remained from the original 9 were left, Alvés amongst them. Within the peloton, Euskaltel again set the pace, and they had halved the size of the peloton as they neared the summit.

With 2km left to go in the first climb, Alvés dropped the last remaining members of the breakaway and took the full 10points in the KOM climb, protecting his lead into the next collection of flat stages, where he will try and preserve his energy to protect the jersey in later days.

The remainder of the peloton continued to close the time gap upon the more relaxed Alvés, and Euskaltel closed the gap on the descent, and Alvés integrated back into the peloton as the main group began the final climb, to the summit and finish line of todays difficult stage.

At around halfway up the climb, Youtube Twitter took over at the front, with Bern, Adriaan and Alvés tapping out a high pace, leaving many riders behind and further reducing the size of the front group.

Finally, the main men started to attack, the first away, was the powerful Movistar rider, Bruseghin who went early, but set a high pace and powered away from the rest of the group. he was immediately followed by HTC's Marco Pinotti, and Robert Kiserlovski of Pro team Astana. Neither of the two current favourites chose to follow, instead hoping there teams would pull back the late escapees.

Once it became clear the teams wouldn't manage to reel in the leaders, Nibali of Liquigas, Zoltan of Youtube-Twitter, and Mosquera of Vacansoleil joined the attack, Antón missed the attack, and despite trying to chase, was unable to catch Zoltan, and was instead just trying to reduce the time loss which he was about to suffer.

Nobody was able to close the gap to Bruseghin today, attacking earliest, but showing real power, and hanging on to take a stage win, Zoltan was able to take second place, with Kiserlovski rounding out the podium, whilst Antón finished in 7th, 22" behind Zoltan, losing some more valuable seconds.

Rest Day Report 1

General Classification
The General Classification is tight fought at the moment, lead by the incredibly strong climber, Igor Antón, by 55" but with multiple Time trials to come, aswell as multiple mountain stages, second placed Zoltan, appears to be well placed to take the lead if he can continue in his current form.

Points Classification
Antón came flying out of the blocks right from the start on day 1, and the race is sufficiently difficult, that no sprinter has been able to consolidate themselves near the top of the race, as such, Antóns performance has been dominant enough to land a second jersey, in what is becoming a 2 horse race, between him, and Scarponi of Lampre-ISD.

King of the Mountains
The king of the mountains jersey is often hard fought during the Giro, between the breakaway riders, against the final GC contenders, at the moment, it is José Alvés who leads the competition, he has been showcasing his climbing abilities superbly so far, taking a brilliant climb victory on the first ascent of Mt Etna from the break. he leads by 5 points over the Movistar rider. Marizio Bruseghin, and will look to comtinue to join breaks to protect this jersey for the next 12 days.

Young Riders Classification
This currently belongs to young Astana climber, R. Kiserlovski, following his ascent of Mt. Etna, the competition is between just 39 riders, and only 15 of those really stand a chance of winning it, Kiserlovski holds a 2'14" lead over second placed Alvés, and also currently holds 7th place in the full rankings, showing Astana just how strong a rider he will become.

Giro D'Italia Stage 10

Today brings some respite from the big climbs seen over the last 2 days, as the riders enter the flatter terrain as they spent the day following the coast from Teramo, to Termoli, there was only one categorized climb on todays stage, worth 3 points to the first rider, and as a such, Alvés intended not to attack the points, protecting himself for tomorrows more important stage.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Route-3.png

The morning break consisted of initially 7 riders, all of whom were placed over 50 minutes behind in the GC, the best placed rider was Gasparotto of Astana, 54'17 behind in the standings, and none of the break riders had more than 6points in the KOM competition.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-1.png

Despite no real interest, the breakaway was caught on the slopes of the KOM categorized climb, but Gasparotto was still just able to hold onto the win at the top, meaning he claims the €250 prize and the 3 points, second was Skys Stephen Cummings, and Matteo Tosatto of SBS took 3rd placed and the final point.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-1.png

A second group formed after the riders had finished the short descent that followed, and opened a gap of just over 4 minutes, the group was made up of Sprinters not strong enough to take on the likes of McEwen, Petacchi and Greipel. One name in the break was Tom Leezer, who has had a high flying start to the season, including stage wins at the Vuelta Asturias.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-2.png

The break started to look more convincing, and Bassie Adriaan, a climber in our side, who has been quiet so far in the Giro attacked, and closed the gap to the breakaway as they entered the final 60km.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-1.png

For the first time in several days, a new collection of teams came forwards in an attempt to bring back the break, the riders of Omega-Pharma Lotto, and Radioshack came forward, clearly the felt this was an opportunity for the sprinters, and considering how rarely those occur in this years edition of the Giro, they were keen to make the most of it, rapidly closing the gap and reeling most of the break with 20km left to ride.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-1.png

Seeing that he had no opportunity in the original break, Van de Walle of Quickstep attacked away from the break as the understanding came apart, but as the photo shows, he never really stood a chance against a thundering peloton.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-2.png

The final shallow climb proved more of a stumbling block than most had presumed, and the sprinters teams started to fall away as there riders fell backwards through the peloton, Igor Antón and Scarponi once more came forwards under protection, would we see yet another win from the incredible spaniard?

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-2.png

No big sprinters were left at the front with 2km left to go, and it would be the two names in the points competition who fought out the stage yet again, Antón kicked first, the question was whether he could hold on to the line..

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012.png
And he can, picking up yet another valuable 20 bonus seconds for first place, opening the gap slightly back to Jakab Zoltan, who rolled in with the peloton, without contesting the final sprint due to his poor placing as he made the final turn.

Overall today was the quiet one we expected, it is a shame that Antón was able to claim yet another valuable stage win and increase his lead slightly, but the KOM jersey remains ours, and with plenty of "GC" stages left to come, neither Zoltan or Sutton are by any means, out of contention.

Giro D'Italia Stage 11

Todays stage, is one of the shorter days in this years edition of the Giro D'Italia, but will still be likely to have an effect on the GC rankings, due to the constant flow of short sharp climbs, similar to the style of an Ardennes race, though shorter in length.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Route-4.png

Alvés led the morning attack, and was present in the 4 man group who broke away early on in the stage, along with team mates from Vacansoleil, Omega-Pharma Lotto, and Liquigas.

The riders around Alvés fell away and were replaced by some more usual breakaway faces, namely Tossato of SBS, and Van de Walle of Quickstep, the group were steadily opening a gap, mainly thanks to Alvés and the BMC rider Santambrogio.

Once it became clear that these riders would be allowed clear, a second group rode forwards to join them, included were Valentin Iglinsky of Astana, who was the first wearer of the KOM jersey.

Alvés, shattered from his exertions to form the BotD was only able to take second place behind Santambrogio in the first KoM sprint, claiming 2 points, he won the second meaning he opens a 10point gap to Bruseghin who currently lies in second place.

With 60km to go, some bigger names started to attack, 4th placed Marco Pinotti, along with Yaroslav Popovych both tried to form a breakaway, and surprisingly, neither the teams of todays favourite, Damian Cunego, or overall leader Igor Antón were interested in chasing, forcing us to come forwards to try and limit this breakaway, we sent Rocha, Bern, Il Cassano and Adriaan forwards, and they were able to peg the lead of the second break at just over 1minute.

Finally with 20km left to ride, Euskaltel and Lampre did ramp up the pace, and the breakaways were caught, on the second to last hill, Timo Bern, one of our free roles, saw an opportunity, and attacked, but he was quickly brought back by the peloton, who were doing over 45km, despite the gradients on road.

With 2km to go, the front 90 were still all together, and once again a bunch sprint would settle the day, Zoltan tried to push forwards, but was blocked off by the volume of riders in front, with 1km left it looked like it would be Damian Cunego, but once again, Antón came from nowhere, to take yet another stage win, his 4th of the race, and his 9th top 10 finish!

We will keep trying on the days more suited to our squad, but at the moment it seems impossible to work out how to beat the spaniard on any profile... We will hope instead to stay as close as possible and gain valuable seconds in the one area of weakness Antón has, the Time Trials.

Giro D'Italia Stage 12

This years Giro D'Italia has a moderately relaxed first 12 days, including just a spattering of difficult days, where we have been able to get a strong position, despite being shadowed utterly by the incredibly in from rider from Euskaltel, Igor Antón Today's stage is the least demanding of the 3 weeks riding, with two uncategorised climbs on an otherwise pan-flat 184km course. Today is likely to be the last chance for the sprinters as tomorrow sees the beginning of a never ending torrent of mountain stages, so we are unlikely to get much from todays stage.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Route-5.png

With nothing of interest on offer to us today, and an almost certain bunch sprint finish, we saw little point in joining the breakaway today, where an initial group of 8 riders were allowed clear early on, highlight name, being Michael Rogers the ex TT world champion, who would surely add some weight to the chances of the breakaway group.

This group was quickly brought back, surprisingly, due to the efforts of Team Movistar, before a second weaker group, though again containing Rogers was allowed free from a lazy peloton, travelling at under 35km/h despite the flat terrain!

It quickly became clear that the break would be allowed to ride out in front for a while, and so 4 other teams sent riders forwards to join the breakaway, saving them the chase later on...

Spoiler

Once the gap got to 8minutes, the team mates of sprinters André Greipel, Robbie McEwen, and Alessandro Petacchi came forwards, cranking up the pace, and starting the process of reeling in the tired breakaway group.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-3.png

From within the breakaway, Knovalovas of Movistar team, was the rider leading the relays under the checkpoint, and so he picked up the 8bonus points and the €1000 bonus, in an uncontested sprint.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-3.png

Shortly after the breakaway passed the sprint checkpoint, the peloton caught sight of the group for the first time, this spurred the understanding within the breakaway to fall apart, and 3 riders made a last ditch attempt from within the original 12 to make something of there days efforts.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-4.png

The riders were all quickly swallowed up by the group, and for the first time in the day, there was some activity from a Youtube-Twitter rider, Jakab Zoltan was feeling good today, and had thought of a plan pre-race, with 10km to ride, he found the wheel and marked Igor Antón, that way if Anton peetered out in the sprint, then we would lose nothing on a day not designed for the team we have sent, but alternatively, if he was yet again involved, then we may be able to limit the time bonuses he can earn today.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-2.png

Sure enough, Antón kicked and got himself a lead, Zoltan followed, and the sprinters were close behind, though saving themselves for a short sharp finish, where as the two Climbers needed to go early to have any hope of opening a lead.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-4.png

The sprinters had saved there attack to just 700m left, but came flying, Antón yet again seemed able to compete, and was holding his own against the best in the business, but Zoltan was starting to slip away from teh very top positions, now hoping for even a small time bonus that may help keep Antón under close surveillence in the GC.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-2.png

On the line, it was the Radioshack sprinter, Robbie McEwen who took the top spot, thanks to a perfectly timed kick, coming even later than the others from a perfect position, with Scarponi in second, and Antón rounding out the podium, Zoltan managed to hang onto 5th, which is an unexpected great result for the team, who had no real expectations from today, hence the relaxed day our side had for the first 181km of racing.

Igor Antón... just HOW? we will keep trying, and hoping that he might have exhausted himself over the easier half of the tour, currently it seems though, that we will have to do something incredible if we are to have any chance of beating the machine, he's on top form, and beating people whether he's techinically better, or not...

Giro D'Italia Stage 13
The easy portion of the Giro came to a conclusion yesterday, and from now on, there is no letting up for the remainder of the race, in what is quite possibly the hardest ever Giro D'Italia. Today we cross the border between Italy and Austria, as we head north for a summit finish at around 2400m. The day contains 3 other categorized climbs, rating at 3/2/1, 5/3/1 and 3/2/1 respectively. The final ascent is one of the harder climbs included in the race, so it will be interesting to see just how strong Antón is now the mountains ramp in a run to Milan. The day is relatively short registering at just 167km, but contains around 3500m of ascent, no simple task for any rider.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Route-6.png

The race kicked off with its usual collection of attacks, and the 11points available in breaks today, Alvés joined the hunt for the successful get away group, Alvés joined the third attempt, and the group proved successful, a group of 5 men being allowed free by the peloton.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-4.png

The group stayed out in front as a block until the beginning of ascent number 1, when the 3 best climbers in the group, found themselves leaving there followers behind, shrinking the break from 5 to 3.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-4.png

As the group passed the 3km to go mark, there was another break in the group, Alvés rode away from his companions, and was joined by another CT rider, Coledo of Acqua & Sapone, who took second place behind Alvés in the first KOM checkpoint.

Euskaltel had taken charge of the main group whilst we focused on the break, and had caused a rift through the peloton, we lost 2 of our weaker climbers, Xuo Zheng, and Miguel Rocha in the split, where a group of 37riders were dropped, other casualties included most of the sprinters, and surprisingly, Peter Sagan, the young eastern european star, who was today left completely in the dust by the main group.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-4.png

As the riders began the second ascent, the Isleberg Pass, two strong riders attacked to join Alvés and Coledo out in front, HTC's Tejay Van Garderen, a potential future GT winner, but for now, here to fight for the -25 jersey, along with the strong Katusha climber, Eduar Vorganov, neither fancied the final pull without a time gap, and quickly joined the leaders as the reached the Summit, with the 5points, going to Alvés again, the only rider interested in the jersey currently.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0016-3.png

The two attackers set a precedent that was followed for the next several kilometres, a second group containing Michael Rogers, and Mosquera of Vacansoleil tried to escape, but were never able to join the front riders. Meanwhile, TYT riders, Zoltan and Sutton, along with Antón of Euskaltel stayed comfortably within the peloton, banking on there teams to reel in the breaks and set them up nearer to the close.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0020-1.png

As the riders reached the halfway point on the final climb, in the lull between the completion of Kassereck, and the beginning of the Grossglockner, Antón made his attack, Zoltan and Sutton followed suit, and were able to control his advances, and he quickly stopped the attack, seeing it would not grant him the freedom he had hoped for.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0021-2.png

The two lads from Youtube Twitter continued to ride with a high pace, pulling away from the peloton, and joining the first of the two break groups, forcing Antón to make a second attack, just moments after his first, in an attempt to tire the leader of the Basque team.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0022-1.png

Antón was able to join the break group, who proceeded to envelop the original breakaway with around 5km left to ride, and the Youtube Twitter boys, ramped up the pace once again, pulling away from the riders who had attacked before they had been forced to put in personal effort.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0025.png

Unsurprisingly, Antón followed again, and the three of them opened a gap, it was clear one of these would take the stage win here today, Antón was favourite according to the bookies pre-race, but Youtube did have the advantage of numbers.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0027.png

Zoltan saw an opportunity after Sutton gave him the perfect leadout into the final 3km, and he made his last ditch attack, Sutton was too tired to follow, and instead pushing along at a steady pace, looking well set for a GT podium, surprisingly, Antón was left completely dead in his tracks as well, staying with Sutton, presumably our earlier tactics on the mountain had worked, and the double-attack had worn out the Maglia Rosa's owner, who could only watch as Zoltan pulled away, hoping that he would not lose enough time to drop the jersey after his excellent efforts earlier in the week.

Zoltan passed the banner with arms held high, now it was a race against the clock for Antón, who was being well marked by Sutton.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0030.png

Sutton had more left than Antón in the final uphill dash, despite his work setting up Zoltan, and was able to complete an absolutely superb TYT 1-2, a brilliant moment for the sponsors, as he just pipped his opponent on the line to take second place., according to the clock 1'27 behind Zoltan would this be enough to take the pink?

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0031.png

Alas, Zoltan misses out on the jersey by a measly 2 seconds, however this bodes well as Jakab is the much stronger TT'er so should it come to the final day in Milan, we expect to take the final standings, however, that is a long way off yet, so for now we will just have to see how the rest of the race goes, and hope we can keep our 2 leaders up at the top, in there current superb positions.

@Fcancellara I know, if we can hold the gap then we may well win our first ever GT! Antón is a weak TTer, and he does actually seem to be tiring slightly!

Good to know he's not actually #superhuman

Absolutely chuffed to bits with the 1-2 for the team and now i am up to 3rd on GC

We are slowly reeling Mr Anton into our netWink

Giro D'Italia Stage 14

Today is likely to be one of the key deciding stages of the Giro D'italia, containing the terrifying ascents of both Monte Crostis, and Monte Zoncolan, the first gaining 1300m over 17.7km, the second 1200m over just 14km. The two climbs come after already 200km of racing in what is sure to be an extremely difficult day of riding for every team.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/Route-7.png

First thing in the morning a 5 man group was able to breakaway from the peloton, none of the KOM contestants were favourite, with teams instead sending domestiques forward to try and protect the key riders and sprinters.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-3.png

We initially expected this group to be reined in by Euskaltel, who had set up early at the front, but when they seemed to be gaining a time gap, a second group containing the more normal breakaway group started to form, (Alvés, Tossato, Larrson.) The second group quickly rode forward to join the initial break out in front to complete a 12man lead group.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-3.png

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-6.png

At the first KOM checkpoint, it will be a shock to everyone (Not...) to see José Alvés taking yet more points, with only one of the original break trying to chase him on the short ascent before they rejoined the main group.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-4.png

1 man was dropped from the original breakaway during that ascent, reducing the numbers to 11, but the gap was still rising, now at 6' without any team wanting to fully commit to a chase of a weak breakaway group, without a real threat other than our own José Alvés to the GC.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-3.png

Finally, wiht a 10' advantage, Euskaltel came forward, the riders still faced the two main ascents of the stage aswell as 20km of racing, and the break was melting quickly now that the had come forward, setting a pace high enough to drop a large group of riders. No GC names were present, but every sprinter was in the rear 30man group.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-6.png

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-6.png

On the beginning of the climb which leads to Monte Crostis, the breakaway split, with 6riders staying at the front, whilst the 5 weaker members started to fall back quickly, tired from there efforts, and now facing the two hardest climbs contained in the 3 week period.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0017-1.png

Around 2km into the Monte Crostis, Rujano, riding for Farnese-Veni attacked from within the breakaway, seeing the peloton chasing behind, now just 3minutes away from the leaders, he surged forward without competition from the break who were unable to stop him breaking away.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0019-2.png

On the slopes of the climb, our riders came forwards to drive a pace, we set it high, and many riders fell away from the main bunch, reduced to just 73 riders as we climb the first of the two mountains presented to the riders today.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0022-2.png

At the top of the climb, despite several attacks by big name riders, our pace, along with help from Euskaltel had reined in even the strongest of these attempts to get free, meaning that the front 53riders would start the final climb together. Surprisingly, Gary Sutton was feeling particularly off today, and despite our efforts to protect him, he was a member of the final group to be dropped on climb number one, meaning we would likely lose our current 2nd-3rd on the GC.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0023-1.png

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0025-1.png

The final group stayed together until just 5km from the finish, when 4 riders- Scarponi, Zoltan, Antón and Di Luca made there attack quickly leaving the rest behind.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0030-1.png

Even Di Luca quickly fell away and the 3 remaining riders entered the final 2km completely unclear of who would take the victory, Zoltan had yesterdays stage win, but would that play against him? more fatigued than his partners?

Antón decided he had enough to go with 1.9km left to ride, and made an attack, hoping to control the gap all the way to the summit for yet another stage win.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0032.png

And success was his! Antón was able to cross the line with a time gap of 7" to his chasers, raising his arms triumphantly, as he once again opens eh gap slightly to Zoltan, back to 21" undoing some of the work of yesterdays ride and team 1-2.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0038.png

Second place was taken by Scarponi, leaving Zoltan to round out the podium with a 3rd place.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0039.png

Gary Sutton actually recovered somewhat on the final climb, pulling back to take 20th place at the summit, though dropping 3'51" on the day, meaning he falls from 3rd down to 6th place, but more importantly, taking himself out of contention of what is now a 2 horse race really as we close on week 2.

Spoiler
i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0040.png

Today went okay for the side, maintaining our high standings in the GC with Zoltan, and our grasp on the KOM jersey, thanks to excellent work right from the off by our young spanish starlet José Alvés. The next two days will be decisive, tomorrow a long mountainous ride, which will fatigue riders all day, which is followed by a Mountain TT, before the mountains start to relax, with the Queen section of the Giro under the belt.

Today also saw game-over for many sprinters, who were unable to cross inside the time limit, meaning they will be unable to compete for the rest of the race, a shame for the likes of McEwen and Bos, leaving just Petacchi as a big sprinter in the competition, with a reduced peloton of just 146 riders from the original 180.
