Almost a big fail by Conta here.. but on the other hand, he came back in style.. nice win for Andy though! 7" is not too much, but two stage-wins is kind of a great statement Smile

Plus the two stage wins add up to 40 seconds in time bonuses. Wink Grin

Of course they do Smile

Remember, you're only in the beginning of the Vuelta, you can close the gap!

That stage to El Escorial is always strange.... In my story there also were big gaps after the first climbs, and some crazy racing by the GC-contenders. But you did very well, Andy is improving and ready to regain some time in the following mountain top finishes.

Vuelta a Espana Stage 9

Race Review

Over the hills and into the mountains we go.
An action packed stage is dead ahead.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/1.jpg

The last few stages have not been kind to the breakaways.
Perhaps things change in their favor today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/2.jpg

And it is looking very promising at the sprint point in Guijuelo
(45kms from the finish), they lead by 10 minutes,

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/3.jpg

Bad luck for Julian Sanchez Pimienta as a flat tire drops him out of the breakaway. And with the climb up Sierra de Béjar lurking there is little chance he will be able to catch up.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/4.jpg

Would you look at that, Andy Schleck starts the chaos again today a long ways away from the finish; Sanchez and Rodriguez follow.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/5.jpg

Joaquim can't keep up, so its now just Andy and Samuel.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/6.jpg

Now Contador attacks ...

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/7.jpg

However the attack proves nothing. But as a nice side story Pimienta has caught back up and now is in the lead, amazing.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/8.jpg

With Contador chasing, another Spainard Sastre tries to get away.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/9.jpg

Igor Anton counters the move when he realizes Sastre is getting away.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/10.jpg

Frank looks over to Contador
and decides to test how much Conta has left in his tank.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/11.jpg

Riders are all over the road now. A quick overview is needed. Andy and Sanchez are closing the gap on Pimienta ...

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/12.jpg

Anton and Sastre are caught up in breakaway traffic a few meters behied ...

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/13.jpg

Contador is dragging Frank up the mountain.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/14.jpg

With the finish a upon us Alberto Contador finds energy for one last attack, Frank is suction cup onto his back wheel.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/15.jpg

Unbelievable, Contador kicks again. Now Frank is in trouble.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/16.jpg

But its Sanchez that gets the headlines today, very tactically ride for him.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%209/17.jpg

And Contador fights all the way back to Andy. Conta saves his red jersey on some late heroics. Andy gains just 8 seconds today, surely not enough for his efforts. Sanchez moves into 2nd in GC now just 7 seconds behind Contador. And lastly to finish our side story, if you were rooting for Julian Sanchez Pimienta you would be glad to know he survived to finish 5th today.
Give that man a raise.

Well, you're gaining slowly. Contador is going to be in great shape so you will probably have to be pretty agressive and attack whenever you can. By the looks of it you should be able to clinch a top 3 or 4 unless Sastre or Anton goes on a suicide mission. Of course, it's still early.

Vuelta a Espana Stage 10

Race Review

Unlike the Giro and Tour the Vuelta puts its only individual time trial here on stage 10. How much time can Contador gain, or better said how much can Andy and Frank loses?

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/1.jpg

World Champion Cancellara is really the only man
that could beat Contador today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/2.jpg

And he looks very good through the two time checks, setting the fastest times.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/3.jpg

At the finish, he sets the time to beat at 58'57''.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/4.jpg

Andy takes ownership of the Green jersey
from brother Frank after yesturday's results.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/5.jpg

A few minutes later Frank takes to the road. Followed by Sanchez.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/6.jpg

And then Contador.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/7.jpg

Andy comes in almost 1 minute behind Fabian's time,
which for now is 11th best.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/8.jpg

Frank Schleck is even slower.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/9.jpg

Sanchez squeezes himself between the Schleck's time at +1'08''.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/10.jpg

Cancellara's time stands as Contador comes in 30 seconds slower.
Andy has only lost 29 seconds ... so far.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/11.jpg

Maxime Monfort overtook Cancellara by the second check point earlier in the day by over a minute, so Andy is still losing a few seconds to Cancellara but must be doing something right if he is closing down on Joaquim Rodriguez in front of him.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/12.jpg

Frank is not having a good day.
If this keeps up Andy could overtake him in GC today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/13.jpg

Sanchez is 5 seconds slower than Andy.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/14.jpg

Conta just keeps rolling,
the math says Andy was now lost a minute and one second.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/15.jpg

Andy passes Rodriquez right before the line, and comes in 1'11'' behind Fabian.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/16.jpg

Frank wants a reset button today, he drops a minute to his brother. Meaning Andy moves past Frank in GC.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/Stage%2010/17.jpg

Talk about make the most of your opportunities, Conta storms his way to the stage win beating Cancellara by 20 seconds. Sanchez is 12 seconds slower than Andy, but remains 2nd overall now 1'51'' behind Alberto. 2'57'' is the magic number for Andy now heading forward.

Well, this was a very good time trial by Andy, 10th and only 1'32 behind the winner in a completely flat ITT. Think he couldn't have done it better!

Totally agree with you but they must work on their time trial

I don't think it'll be possible to win the triple, but good luck trying to! Grin

I will be leaving on vacation the 16th, so I think I can get 4 or 5 more reports before then. Which leaves 4-5 more reports when I return on Christmas (25th). Really wish the timing was better but there is nothing I can do now. Frown
