Maastricht - Valkenburg
img338.imageshack.us/img338/7130/profileao.jpg
Several very difficult hills expect us today. Also the weather looks very rainy and cold. Not the best conditions but nevertheless we will see a great race here. 3 times the Cauberg, twice the Eyserbosweg and on time the Keutenberg to name just some of the 31 hills.

img254.imageshack.us/img254/522/pcm0008.jpg
Some riders try it with a attack.
Seeldraeyers (Omega), Terpstra (Milram), Timmer (Skil), Bono (Lampre), C.A.Sörensen (Saxobank) and Pereiro (Astana).
It`s a very strong group but probably they will be caught later. Everything else would be a big surprise.

img227.imageshack.us/img227/7236/pcm0009.jpg
Quickstep for Pineau, FDJ for Vaugrenard and Rabobank for Gesink are doing the pace. None of these 3 is a big favourite for today`s win but you must have them on your list.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/7236/pcm0010.jpg
Bad luck for Hesjedal. A puncture. Luckily it`s still 115km to the finish and so he has no big problems. But it might be a bad omen.

img222.imageshack.us/img222/5645/pcm0011b.jpg
With 95km to ride the group reaches the first climb on the Eyserbosweg. 1100m with an average of 8,1%. One of the hardest parts in this race. This time the tempo is still quite slow but the next time it will be a big torture for many riders.

img338.imageshack.us/img338/1936/pcm00120.jpg
The peloton reaches the Cauberg for the second time. Next time they will sprint for the victory. Although there are still 75km the tempo is quite high now. It seems like some teams try to split the peloton here. All our Garmin riders are in the first part of the field to avoid being dropped.

img3.imageshack.us/img3/4956/pcm0013q.jpg
Sure enough there really is a split. Just about 50 riders in the first group including the Garmin squad. The big favourites are also in this group but some big names are in the 2nd group like Menchov, Monfort, Voeckler, Chavanel or Devolder.

img406.imageshack.us/img406/5994/pcm0014.jpg
25km before Valkenburg some riders attack. Cunego, Flecha, Contador and Cancellara are the first. Sanchez, Gilbert and Kolobnev are following a few meters behind. Hesjedal decided to wait a bit longer.

img232.imageshack.us/img232/2540/pcm0015y.jpg
The Eyserbosweg again. The group is caught again. Just Cancellara and Gilbert are a few meters ahead. Some riders almost fall from their bikes and have to push it up the hill.

img213.imageshack.us/img213/3420/pcm0016.jpg
Cancellara really did it over the top. Not even Gilbert was able to follow him. The guy is just awesome.

img822.imageshack.us/img822/4114/pcm0017b.jpg
The Keutenberg. 700m with an average of 9,4%. On the 15,5% part Hesjedal increases and rides to the front of the group.

img203.imageshack.us/img203/1404/pcm0018.jpg
Cancellara isn`t that far away so Hesjedal attacks and tries to jump on his back wheel. It`s the last mountain before the final sprint, so Hesjedal must tryit here. Contador is working for the group to bring them back to the two in front.

img829.imageshack.us/img829/8817/pcm0019.jpg
Unfortunately Hesjedal couldn`t reach Cancellara although he was very close to him. On the flat and the descent Cancellara was just crazy and uncatchable.
800m to the finish but the Cauberg is long and steep. Cancellara has still 21sec to the group. Hesjedal is brought to the first line by Sanchez but because of the attack he doesn`t have much energy left.

img26.imageshack.us/img26/5359/pcm0020.jpg
Cancellara was really exhausted in the end. Kolobnev with another "surprising" win uphill. Last year he won with an attack, this year he wins in the final sprint of a bigger group. Great performance. Cunego and Gilbert couldn`t pass him. Cancellara becomes still a good 5th and Hesjedal on 11.
Actually not what he wanted in the morning, but well, others were stronger today. So LBL and Fleche Wallone are the next chances for him. His form is great as shown again today.

La Flèche Wallonne is a hilly cycling classic held in April in Belgium. It`s held between the Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The hills are longer than in the Amstel Gold Race but not as steep as in LBL. Normally the best mix between hilly and mountain riders have good chances here.
Most wins have Davide Rebellin, Moreno Argentin, Eddy Merckx and Marcel Kint with 3 each.

***** Contador
**** Sanchez, Gilbert
*** Cunego, A. Schleck, F. Schleck
** Kolobnev, Nibali, Gesink, Hesjedal
* Rodriguez, Vinokourov, Kirchen, Vaugrenard, Menchov

The hills might be too long for Gilbert, so Contador could have an advantage in this classic. But as almost every good climber is participating here it`s hard to find THE favourite.

Charleroi - Huy
img109.imageshack.us/img109/6996/profileuz.jpg
With 198km it`s the shortest of the three classics in the "Ardennes week". But nevertheless it`s a very hard one. Several hills, especially on the second half of the race are long and steep. In the end the riders have to climb the Mur de Huy with 1,3km and 9,3% in average. They have to pass the Mur 3 times.

img703.imageshack.us/img703/2092/pcm0017.jpg
Really bad weather today. Rain over whole Belgium, so we can`t expect anything else in the second half.
Nevertheless Roulston (HTC), Steensen (Saxobank), Silin (Katusha), Wyss (Cervelo), Loubet (Ag2r) and Ricci-Poggi (Landbouwcredit) are going for a long break.

img207.imageshack.us/img207/1404/pcm0018.jpg
The peloton is climbing the Mur the first time after 75km. It`s very steep on this corner.

img140.imageshack.us/img140/7348/pcm0019r.jpg
Samoilau (Quickstep) attacks with 127km to ride. Hivert (Saur) is following immediately. Some other rider are trying to join.

img809.imageshack.us/img809/6229/pcm0020d.jpg
Le Mevel (FDJ) and the German champ Martens (Rabobank) were able to join after a short time.

img707.imageshack.us/img707/5460/pcm0021.jpg
It will be harder for Daniel Martin and Bakelands (Omega). Although both of them were attacking directly after the other 4 they couldn`t catch up. Now they will have to struggle more than they liked.
As we have seen that this could be a strong group we decided to send someone, too. So we don`t have to do the pace in the peloton. Kessiakoff might be the last help for Hesjedal and Sanchez might have been too strong for this group. So Martin was our first option.

img813.imageshack.us/img813/9144/pcm0022.jpg
Most teams including the favourite teams have a rider in the groups. So Euskaltel and Astana have a nice job now doing the pace alone. Liquigas isn`t working that much at the moment. But the pace is still quite low.

img823.imageshack.us/img823/3766/pcm0023.jpg
Both groups meet 90km to the finish. But probably most of the first group can`t follow very long.

img109.imageshack.us/img109/1809/pcm0024.jpg
Daniel Martin is leading the group. With 43km left the advantage is still 3'47''. It will be a very close decision.

Climbing the Mur de Huy the second time. Just the 6 new riders in the front. Unfortunately Martin had some problems on this point. But he is still in the group.

img801.imageshack.us/img801/326/pcm0026.jpg
With just 10km to the finish Martin can`t follow any longer. Bad luck for us. Maybe we should have sent Kessiakoff or Sanchez and go a higher risk. But the advantage is still 1'35''. So the group could really reach the line first. Although we sent Martin we haven`t expected that the peloton isn`t doing enough to catch them earlier.

img196.imageshack.us/img196/7669/pcm0027.jpg
Contador attacked out of the peloton, Daniel Martin tries to hold his wheel. Except of the final climb there is no more difficulty.

img841.imageshack.us/img841/2653/pcm0028.jpg
Hesjedal and Sanchez try to follow Contador. But on the flat part the tempo is very high, so they don`t have any chance and have to prepare for a sprint now. Quite at the same time Robert Gesink and Jerome Pineau were crashing in a wet corner. Both continued the race. Let`s hope that both aren`t injured too much.

img508.imageshack.us/img508/299/pcm0029.jpg
Final kilometer and Martens opens the sprint. A few meters behind Contador and Martin can already see them. But also the other favourites aren`t far behind them.

img256.imageshack.us/img256/9089/pcm0030.jpg
A big surprise for everyone. Paul Martens can celebrate the biggest victory of his career. Contador and Martin were still overtaken, so Samu Sanchez on 6 and Gilbert on 7 were leading the group.
With Sanchez on 14 and Hesjedal on 16 we couldn`t reach a top 10 once more again. So probably we really did the wrong choice with Martin today.
Although Hesjedal has very good results so far in 2011 he couldn`t repeat his top 10 in MSR, AGR and FW.
Next chances are LBL, Dauphinee, Tour, San Sebastian and Lombardia for him to get a big win.

"La Doyenne" is the 4th monument this season. It`s the third of the 3 races during the Ardennes week. The hills on the route are longer than in AGR in general and steeper than in the FW. It`s also the longest of the 3 races with ~260km. Some of the hills have averages above 10%. It`s held since 1892. Record champ is Eddy Merckx with 5 wins.

Everybody who wants to win La Doyenne must beat last years winner Gilbert. The hills suit him perfectly. It will be very hard to beat him in an uphill sprint in the end.

Liège-Liège
img24.imageshack.us/img24/8323/profilean.jpg
The big difficulties start with the final 100km. A few very long and steep hills and some shorter but not less steep hills in the final 20km. At least the weather is very sunny today.

img838.imageshack.us/img838/4451/pcm00310.jpg
Calzati (Sky), Pinot (FDJ) and Novoa (Euskaltel) are the break of the day.
With just 3 riders they won`t have lots of success probably.

img707.imageshack.us/img707/8072/pcm0032.jpg
On the Mur St. Roch with an average of 10,8% on 1km the peloton splits. Just 36 riders are in the front group. Luckily 7 Garmin riders are there, too. But it`s still the half of the race before us.

img593.imageshack.us/img593/8195/pcm0033.jpg
Not all favourites expected a split there. So both Schlecks, Sanchez, Contador, Kirchen, Kolobnev, Vaugrenard, Evans and some other puncheurs are in the second group. They are already 1min behind.

img713.imageshack.us/img713/4258/pcm0034u.jpg
It took 25km for them to reach the Gilbert-Garmin group again. At least many of their helpers had to work earlier than expected and might miss in the end.

img529.imageshack.us/img529/6762/pcm0035.jpg
Gerdemann and Vanendert are trying an early attack like in Fleche Wallone. But nobody is following them 90km to the finish. So it will be very hard as duo to survive against several teams.

img254.imageshack.us/img254/7259/pcm0036.jpg
Easily they overtook the breakaway and lead the race now.
55km -> 5'18''

img560.imageshack.us/img560/4027/pcm0037.jpg
The pace is very high now and there is no time for relaxing. It`s just up and down for the rest of the day. Just 51 riders are able to follow this group. With Hesjedal, Sanchez, Kessiakoff and Martin we still have 4 guys here.

img816.imageshack.us/img816/6710/pcm0038.jpg
On the 30km mark Gilbert tries it with an attack. He must feel very strong today as he would be also the favourite in a sprint.

img210.imageshack.us/img210/1327/pcm0039.jpg
10km later he is caught and Kirchen immediately sets the next attack. More and more riders have problems to follow.

img227.imageshack.us/img227/9137/pcm0040.jpg
Many splits now in this group. Just 14 riders in the favourites group, who overtook Gerdemann and Vanendert now. Hesjedal is our last man in this group.

img508.imageshack.us/img508/1600/pcm0041.jpg
With 7km to ride F. Schleck, the World Champion attacks on the Cote de Saint Nicolas. 1km with 11%.

img834.imageshack.us/img834/7532/pcm0042o.jpg
On the final kilometer all 14 are together again. Gilbert starts the sprint. Hesjedal tries to get his wheel but he starts to get big problems on this climb.

img543.imageshack.us/img543/4222/pcm0043.jpg
Gilbert wins La Doyenne again. Nobody could beat him in this sprint. Contador as 2nd was also a few seconds ahead. Cunego led the other favourites over the line. Hesjedal on 12 misses the next top 10 here.
He showed a good race but in the end this was the maximum for him.
Now he can completely concentrate on the Tour and the last monument later this season.

Just played first 3 stages of Romandie. (prologue, hill, flat)
For some reason stage 2 + 3 crashed after the finish, so I don`t have a replay.
So I can give you 2 options:

1) The whole Romandie without pictures as fast report and going for the Giro then.
or
2) Romandie with pictures and just these stages without.

What do you prefer?

I prefer No. 1 Wink

Hmmm.. depends on how your team performed Wink If you're doing fine in Romandie and the upcoming stages are interesting, i would like to see screens.

Do #1. It sounds like you want to get to the Giro quickly.

That`s a true point as Romandie is just preparation and 2 of 3 stages crashed is shit.

Also a good point. I will play the stages 4 (ITT) 5+6 mountain tomorrow. Then I decide if they are interesting enough to be reported as single stages.

The results in the Ardennes weren't the best ones, but I'm sure you'll do better in Romandie and Giro. Cool

The Tour de Romandie is a Suisse Pro Tour Race in the Romandie region.
It`s held since 1947. On six stages the riders have to prove their skills in timetrial and mountain stages and so it`s a perfect preparation for the Giro d`Italia. Most wins has Stephen Roche with 3.

Garmin squad 2011:
img510.imageshack.us/img510/2564/teamjh.jpg
With two leaders we take part in the Suisse race. Daniel Martin is preparing for the Giro but might have problems with 2 ITT`s. Kessiakoff showed with a 6th last year that he can get a good result in this race. So he is allowed to ride on his own before having a longer break until San Sebastian, Pologne and the Vuelta.
Millar, Duggan and Stetina will be our helpers in the start of the mountains, what`S also their job during the Giro.
Hunter will try to get a good shape for his only GT this year.
Baris Dao, our talented neo-pro will have to learn in this race. We hope to get some nice results in the next season, where he will ride his first GT.

Favourites:

***** T.Martin
**** Karpets, Fuglsang
*** van Garderen, Gerdemann, Kessiakoff
** Cobo, Seeldraeyers, Soler, D. Martin
* Frank, Zubeldia, Fothen, Sagan, Martinez

As there is no real hard mountain top finish the decision might fall in the time trial. So Tony Martin is of course the favourite. But with Karpets, Gerdemann, Fuglsang and Van Garderen he has strong opponents. Most of the other favourites are good climbers but bad timetrialists. So we have to see if those riders can get enough advantage in the mountains to beat them.

P.S. I decided to report these 4 stages. 2 timetrials are quite quick and two mountain stages will probably be interesting after many hilly classics.
Also it`s a PT race and no little 2.2 race, so I should report it.

Bad luck in the hilly classics (But Im really happy for Martens, great result for him). I agree with tsmoha, if Garmin performed well in Romandie, I would prefer screenshots Smile

A short, flat prologue today. With just 4km the time differences should be quite small. But you will be able to see a first impression of the favourites` shape.

Daniel Martin in the finish. His time isn`t that bad.

Gerdemann is always a good bet for these one week races. He proves it with a new best time.

img526.imageshack.us/img526/6751/hushovd.jpg
We haven`t seen much of him this year. Thor Hushovd`s early season wasn`t very successful and then he wasn`t nominated for the big cobbled classics for no reason at all. Although he is a great prologue rider his time can`t beat the best times.
5'45''

img716.imageshack.us/img716/930/karpets.jpg
The next national champion and another favourite for the overall. Vladimir Karpets improved quite well in the last season. He won`t lose much time today.

David Millar. Our rider for today and for stage 4. His shape is quite good at the moment. He is also the best helper for Daniel Martin in the Giro.
But he won`t get a podium today. Same time as Hushovd.

Kessiakoff is in a great form after the Ardennes. He wants to be better than in 2010 where he finished 6th although he was just the co-leader behind Vandevelde. He finishes very strong here and is on 4 at the moment. Great time for him.

Tony Martin wins another timetrial and takes the yellow jersey. It will be interesting to see him together with Cancellara during the Tour and the World Championships.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 2

img842.imageshack.us/img842/9774/profilea.jpg
The terrain is a bit hilly, but there should be a bigger group in the end sprinting for the win. No favourite is supposed to lose time on this stage. The deciding stages are 4+5 probably.

img522.imageshack.us/img522/3540/resultw.jpg
Liquigas with a double. Willems survived out of a break. In the following group Sagan was the fastest. Surprisingly Kessiakoff became 3rd and takes the bonus seconds and the sprinter jersey on tomorrow`s stage. Daniel Martin on 10 is another good result for us. The overall wasn`t changed very much but Kessiakoff is on the 3rd now because of the seconds today.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 3

img59.imageshack.us/img59/6200/profile3a.jpg
In the tour magazine this stage is supposed to be a flat one. We will see if guys like Hunter, Cavendish, Goss, Greipel or McEwen will be able to sprint in the end. I believe the hilly sprinters Sagan, Hagen or Ventoso will take this stage.

img135.imageshack.us/img135/5359/pcm0020.jpg
Gavazzi wins in a sprint of about 80 riders. Kessiakoff with another great sprint same as Martin. Kessiakoff improved on the 2nd and will ride in the green jersey in tomorrow`s time trial.
A bit surprising that Sagan couldn`t repeat yesterday`s performance and wasn`t even in the top 10.

Tour de Romandie - Stage 4
Moudon - Moudon
img221.imageshack.us/img221/3452/profile4.jpg
A hilly ITT over 23km. Until the first point it`s uphill, then downhill towards the finish. This timetrial is really important in a course like this.
Who can beat Tony Martin?

img28.imageshack.us/img28/4809/pcm00030.jpg
Daniel Martin is the fastest on the first time. But downhill is not his biggest strength so he might lose some time again. Also all the favourites hasn`t been here yet.

img219.imageshack.us/img219/5700/pcm0004u.jpg
Fothen beats his time on the first point and also gts the next best time in the finish.

img221.imageshack.us/img221/4092/pcm0005k.jpg
After a "bad" prologue for Millar he will try to get a good result in the longer ITT. But his time is slower than Fothen`s although he was faster on the top of the hill.

img88.imageshack.us/img88/7615/pcm0006m.jpg
Gerdemann beats his teammate Fothen by 17sec and takes the lead. But both of them are showing a great performance here and show their ambitions to get a PT license again next year.

img98.imageshack.us/img98/273/pcm0007.jpg
The green jersey Kessiakoff can`t surprise that much like in the prologue. But with just +35s to Gerdemann he beats riders like fuglsang, Karpets, Millar or Van Garderen.

img713.imageshack.us/img713/522/pcm0008.jpg
Of course Tony Martin takes his 2nd win in the Romandie.
He was 24 sec faster than Gerdemann. Is this already the decision in the overall?
