Oh, yes. Forgot about that. |

15.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 16
Córdoba - Puertollano: 170.4km
Tactics meeting
After a day's rest, the riders embark on another flat stage. Unlike the last stage, there are no hill near the finish, so the sprinters should be contesting the stage win. If no breakaways go clear, that is.
Samuel Sanchez has been the strongest in almost all diciplines during the last stages, so Tomas Vaitkus found his wheel for the sprint.
It turned out to be a good idea, as the Euskaltel rider in the points jersey was leading our sprinter out perfectly.
But Sanchez is obviously in superb shape, as Vaitkus had no chance of overtaking him. Samuel Sanchez won his 3rd stage in a row, and the 4th of the Vuelta. He looks unbeatable at the moment!

16.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 17
Ciudad Real - Talavera de la Reina: 175.4km
Tactics meeting
Today we're expecting another mass sprint, as long as the sprinters' teams are as active as they have been so far. There's probably not much use though, because Sanchez seems to win everything now.
Chris Horner was our man in the 10 man breakaway. The most noteworthy riders here was Sergei Ivanov and Karsten Kroon.
The sprint teams were obviously on vacation today, because the breakaway soon got an unassailable lead. At the 15km mark, the attacks started.
Frederik Willems of Liquigas and Chris Horner of Discovery Channel got away from the others. Oroz (Euskaltel) was chasing Horner and Willems.
Chris Horner had a good chance of taking another Grand Tour stage win this year. This would probably be the last chance of his carreer. However, approaching the finishing line, Horner had a bad position. Could he still outsprint Willems?
Unfortunately, he couldn't. Willems exploeded from Horner's back wheel, to take the biggest victory of his carreer. We're very sorry for Chris. This could have been a great way to end a long carreer.
Freire led the peloton in 8 minutes behind Willems and Horner.

17.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 18
Talavera de la Reina - Ávila: 189.4km
Tactics meeting
Today's medium mountain stage will probably see the GC guys back in action. The stage is not tough enough to make any big gaps, but all sprinters should be gone from the finale. Is Sanchez, who has won four stages so far, back to winning ways again today?
Filippo Pozzato and our own Jurgen Van Goolen was in the breakaway, but they didn't last for more than about half the stage.
On the final hill, Contador and Samuel Sanchez launched a powerful attack. A few meters down the road, Leipheimer and Evans tried to follow.
Levi made it to the two front guys and brought with him Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) and Karpets (Katusha). Evans was dropped.
With the leaders 1 minute in front, a few riders among the 30 man strong peloton tried to brigde the gap. With 10km left, only Efimkin from AG2R made it.
Heading towards the finishing line, Levi, Karpets and Efimkin struggled to keep the pace of the three riders in front, Sanchez, Contador and Pereiro.
Samuel Sanchez took his 5th stage win in this Vuelta, with Levi finishing in 5th place. He put some important seconds into Cadel Evans, who came in with the pack.

18.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 19
Ávila - La Granja. Real Fábrica de Cristales: 179.4km
Tactics meeting
The last stage before the decisive final time trial is another mountain stage. It has Samuel Sanchez written all over it. Can anybody defeat him in his current stellar form?
At the foot of the last climb, we tried to put some pressure on the peloton. We hoped to deliver Levi safely in the final breakaway. The early break had been caught already.
The first to attack was 2nd placed Oscar Pereiro. Levi followed.
But our captain soon faded away, and didn't make the selection. Over the last mountain Sanchez, Contador, Pereiro and Evans were in the lead. Guess who would win the stage?
But Sanchez in his blue points jersey surpisingly dropped back to the peloton for seemingly no particular reason. The three leaders had an advantage of almost a minute. It wasn't looking good for Levi vs Evans for the 3rd place overall, despite our leader doing his best to chase down the front three for Discovery.
And Evans was the winner of the sprint for the line, beating Pereiro and Contador.
More importantly, Sanchez led the peloton in 47 seconds down. This brings Evans past Leipheimer in the GC, and judging by the Australian's form, it will be difficult for Levi to take back the podium position in the TT tomorrow.
