To be honest, the opening weekend is easy to win, most cobbles riders are not in shape yet. I've won Omloop and Kuurne with worse riders than Stijn, AI just doesn't consider it an important race.

But great double nonetheless

Stijn: There are four classified flat stages, but most of them are extremely tough, so good news for me. With Cavendish and Sagan here, one stage win is the goal.

Willy: Last year I won Paris - Nice. Guess who are here this year? Indeed, Uran and Machado.

Nice win for Stijn in Kuurne as well, but I expected that, field in Kuurne isn't always that strong

Stijn: Easiest stage of this Paris - Nice. I hope to win today, although the next profiles suit me better as a rider.

And the "trustee system" takes immediate effect. White wearing Lou Smeets protected me all day. The wind wasn't as bad as predicted, so no splits.

The team set up quite a lead-out, including Phinney, Howard and Farrar.

But I got blocked by the final breakaway member being reeled in and lost touch with Farrar's wheel!

It took a big effort to get back on that wheel, half my energy was gone. Three sprint trains were getting ready for the finale.

Stijn: Definitely a chance for the more punchy-sprinters like Sagan, or in lesser extent myself.

Willy: A dangerous stage for the GC men to lose time. I will lead-out Stijn to avoid time loss.

I made a snap decision to forget about Willy's lead-out and jumped to Sagan's wheel while it was still possible!

The road went less steep near the finish and I was able to build enough speed to pass him. Now it was just a matter of making it to the finish line!

Aftermath

We can deduct several conclusions after this race: Sagan is strong but is definitely beatable, Stijn is looking good for Milan - San Remo, Willy is in great shape... But in the end, the point is that Stijn got another win and tonight we will celebrate that with the team. Tomorrow is another possible chance for the sprinters!
