I was tackling this nasty cobbled climb near my house, when it snapped. I started slowly but was on a higher gear than I usually use there. I'm pretty ignorant about bike parts and equipment so anything would be helpful really. Thanks
Might be bad luck - how many kms on it, how often do clean and re-lubricate it, what lubricant do you use, typical weather conditions etc etc?
Had a chain snap on me once (painfully) - it was a rusted piece of crap due to my total lack of maintenance and using a completely inappropriate lube.

What's so funny in that? And once again, it's either Admir or admirschleck.
I'm too lazy right now to write that full explanation again, so I'll just quote that first post I made about the same matter

damn that was 11 pages back

Oh I did that twice in a very sort period of time (a week iirc) from my experience it's most likely the combination of the higher gear + a weary chain

Okay, but I am not checking the Daily group too often, to be honest. That's why I follow guys.

Thanks Ian, the Garmin 500 looks very nice. The strava segment download sounds like fun.
@Felix: Yeah, Garmin and Strava Users should be seperated from each other in the rankings of elevation, just seems a bit odd in my opinion. But then again, it's not important at all. Just a thing you do after a ride.

@Shonak 100 sounds reasonable to me for something so customisable, accurate and with no battery worries. I wondered about making the move from a smartphone but the Garmin 500's been rock solid (not that I had cause to complain about Endomondo).
Apart from the basics of having everything I want to see where I want to see it in a compact package, I love the extras too - my current favourite is downloading a Strava segment as a course then going up against my previous best (or even someone else's) in real time.
The longer I've had it the more I don't want to be without it.
you got me seriously thinking about getting one as well but the lack of money is still killing me, maybe I should get a jo, I should get a jooooo. I can't even say it

Kilometers shouldn't be the cause of it, but I have bought a lubricant spray and this was only my 2nd ride since applying it.
Weather was perfect today: ~25ºC sunny.
I'm not a big fan of equipment maintenance either but I'm only able to go on a ride 2-5 times per month.
Probably the lack of maintenance then, and perhaps a wrong lubricant too. I'll try to work on those aspects, thanks for the help

When it comes to chains everyone has their own way of doing it, you just have to stick with one method you are happy with (or least unhappy with ).
For me the biggest revelation was degreaser (old news to most) - I can brush it on (prefer that to the sprays) the cassette and chain, leave for 5, a bit of a brush, wash off and the drivetrain looks sparkly, silver new.
All that's left is a quick dry then re-lube (I use Finish Line wet lube to suit the UK climate) and wipe off any excess. Whole job can be done in about 15 minutes and only needs doing once a month or so (obviously highly dependent on your mileage and if it's wet).
Either way it's likely I'll need to replace the chain every 5000 kms or so but will have to keep an eye on the wear with the aid of a ruler and Sheldon Brown's website. |

I took a quick look and they look quite legit to me actually. My problem lies more in weird peak rides that feature no real, serious climb at all but still have a very high elevation data that is just unexplainable to me. But it's my personal issue I gues and I'll find a work-around for that.
There's a few questionable sections that I've noticed where it seems to jump me off road, or has me going beyond junctions and then turning back.
Unfortunately that seems to rob me of virtually every segment I ride through, I think there's only 2 segments that work for me and they only work about 20% of the times I go through them.
And with mine it's more issues with the speed not matching the gradient that annoys me, as when it makes a mistake it tends to either jump my speed through the roof or kill it completely depending on if it shortens or lengthens the route.
If you zoom in on my most recent ride you'll see that it doesn't always follow the road I'm actually on as it tends to straight line too much.
Oh and those rides you are referring to could be from segments that don't have the correct elevation data, I've got one near me that is seriously wrong which is actually like this
To correct GPS problems check out https://strava-tools.raceshape.com/snap/
After I've corrected it and click download the new file it opens it as what looks like an xml file where I can see all the code in my web browser instead of actually downloading it, am I meant to copy that into notepad and save it? if so as what type of file.

Are you trying to edit it on a mobile device? That seems to give such an error. Try it on the desktop and then the download should be a tcx file that can be uploaded straight to Strava (just delete the old wrong version of the ride on Strava). |

Do you lube your chain at all? If it is dry and full of grit it will degrade the links which will cause it to snap when you put power through.
Two days and only 16 k's this week is frustrating, woke up with a tight calf on Monday and my right wrist is still giving me issues since the 2nd Everest. Hopefully I can have a issue free ride into work tomorrow and then have a good hit out again Thursday, do not enjoy cycling free days especially when I have new wheels to take out

Get well soon Strdyz. Hate to say it but maybe the body would benefit from a few days off the bike to rest up. Either way enjoy the wheels! |

It might be the link to the ride you paste in - if memory serves it's picky and wants the form https://app.strava...es/xxxxxxx (where x's are ride ID number) rather than the default ride ID url Strava gives you. Take the ride ID number only and ensure the first bit reads as above and see if that does it.
If not then maybe contact using the help email on the site and see if they can sort it for you

Injury-Bros! I made a restday too on Monday (but then again, I make way mroe restdays than you anyways^^) since I hit the deck on the city's tram rails on sunday. Damn, I really hate those things. Once I get in them, I'm basically on the floor. Still the leg hurts slighty.

Ouch get well soon to you too Shonak.
Got horizontal myself but got away with it - as I was coming downhill a car rocking on the clutch at a junction made me think he was pulling out. Reflex reaction had me snatching way too much rear brake as my rear wheel tried to take the lead but just balanced out in time to straighten up.
Note to my subconcious self even when in a panic front>rear brake...

The download problem was caused by my browser, (changing to safari fixed that) but it still hasn't fully corrected the route, or to be more specific it has fully fixed it on the fixing site but not when I upload the corrected file to strava meaning I'm still missing about 20 segments I rode on that ride.
As I'm going to have problems with every ride I do it will probably be simpler to buy a Garmin and record my rides that way.

Ah glad you found the problem at least. It can't help on the segment front if your GPS misses the start or end of a segment only if it goes off in between as far as I can remember. |
