hmmm wonder why Pauwels droped down to the second group???
nice riding from Basso today to
He was called back to to help reel in Basso's group, but the Basso group gave up before Pauwels managed to drop back. When Basso's group was caught it was better to help the 2nd group and thus not giving di Luca/Menchov a chance at any bonus seconds.
Needless to say it would've been much better to just stay with Bertagnolli. |

They were caught before it happened if I remember correctly.... |

Had I been Pauwels I had disobeyed and pushed on and won the stage and then talked to Van Poppel. Kinda hard when the team managers car is besides ya . But this was the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen. Reminds me of Barichello who had to let Schumacher pass.
Belgian commentators were going crazy (kinda funny). They just got Pauwels up with them in the commentry box. Pauwels remains calms (taking his job with Cervelo over a stage win), saying that he wouldn't have felt good if he didn't obey and Sastre would have lost time cuz of it ... |

Lol, one of the belgian commentators (José de Cauwer) was really really pissed I had a good laugh.
still stupid tactics though. gotta agree with that. understandable, but stupid. and unluckly for Cervelo they where proven wrong right away. |

I'd have understood there tactics, if Sastre was actually in danger of losing the GC. But at the point were they let Pauwels wait, Basso was less then a minute upfront (if i remember correctly) and they were gaining time. I still think they made a huge mistake.
I also had a laugh when the Belgian commentators (including De Cauwer) called Van Poppel, who said that Pauwels would have won the stage for sure, if he got to stay with Bertagnoli.

From the way I remember it, Sastre's group had already been caught again by the P when Pauwels dropped back. |

Pauwels haven't relayed instead of Bertagnoli. In final 30km he was just sitting in Bertagnoli's wheel so it would be unfair that he won today.
Menchov looked super strong when Di Luca attacked me happy |

Sastre's group (di Luca, Menchov, Sastre, Pellizotti and Seeldreyers (I can't remember if Arroyo was there or not)) was caught well before then yes.
However, the Basso group was still 25-30 seconds ahead, though it was obvious to almost everyone they would be caught way before the finishline. |

Yeah I thought he is in trouble staying at the back of the group, but when Di Luca attacked he was the first to go after him, then Sastre came.
Can't wait to see what will happen tomorrow.
and Simoni lost 18 minutes acording to La Gazzetta site.

Yeah, expect to see Simoni fly up the mountain tomorrow. It's guaranteed - and not only because he saved energy for tomorrow...

After seeing todays stage, I really do wonder if there's anything possible to break Menchov. The way he countered Di Luca on a typical Di Luca climb was impressive.
Also kudos to Di Luca and Menchov NOT to go with Basso. They are definately tactically ahead.
And after today, Leipheimers chances of the Giro are second to none. He is outclimbed by nearly all other top 5 GC contenders |

Well, if di Luca would have started a little earlier Menchov could've broken. He already broke on such a climb earlier this Giro (dont quite recall which stage).
that said, I'm not sure whether di Lica would've been able to start much earlier himself.
because, yeah, Menchov impressed.
I dont really see anything stopping Menchov from winning this Giro anymore, except some bad luck (crash/flat tire...)
Tomorrows stage should seal the deal. if not.... well, then it's a different story. |
