Did this out in Italy last year, absolute bastard of a climb, averages about 12% I think over the first 10 kilometres [which are on pretty beaten up roads], the stretch of more than a kilometre at about 20% with a pitch up at 27% did nearly have me at a standstill but I managed it and the last 10 kilometres are fantastically beautiful.
Epic ride Strydz, don't think I could survive on the bike that long, let alone with that much climbing.

This is also a real steep mofo https://www.strava.com/segments/617898 it just doesn't let you rest
dear mother of god
edit: I was wondering (well actually searching for a ego boost ) how fast do you guys actually sprint in normal conditions? I wanne measure how I stand against you guys. I can sprint about high 30's, low 40's.
As for hardest climb, I have one about 5 minutes away which is about 600m long, with a 19% first 200m, then it flattens out to about 5% for 200m and goes back up to 12% for the final 200m. It's not long, but it's agony - particularly the flatter bit where you have no speed whatsoever and end up just spinning.
As for Sprinting, my best is 62 km/h. Scary as hell when your feet aren't clipped in. |

There are two "fun" climbs near me: The Wall and The Stiletto (both nicknames). The Wall is only about 200-300m long but the gradient is stupid! Averages 18%, peaking somewhere around 25% just shy of the summit. It's amazingly fun... The Stiletto is longer, 2km in length, but also pretty brutal. Regarded as one of the steepest roads around London it comfortably hits 25% for periods and averages around 18-20%
Havn't measured my sprinting in ages but i could hit 40 odd on my old hybrid bike (as measured by an old teacher) about 3-4 years ago

Sprinting speed: with tail wind a little over 60 km/h, for a very short distance at my road bike, when I was still doing BMX, so used to sprinting 40 seconds with a high frequency.
Climbs nearby: the Amerongseberg (1km at 5%, max 8%), the Posbank (last part 600m at 7%, max 10%) and the Oude Holleweg in Nijmegen (800m at 9%, max 17% with 500 consecutive metres over 10%). So with no summit over 100 metres, the climbs nearby are pretty short.

Crap, I had hoped to be the guy behind Strydz in elevation this week, but apparently you can get over 7k meters of elevation without a real mountain and no serious climb and in less overall kilometers/distance... o_O
In cooler news: I got attacked by a goose today while in the downhill. Scared for life now.

Endomondo works flawlessly; thanks Marc. So my first genuine ride this year went well. Went with my dad and brother (both average 10 km/h or so) and so I sat faffing around a lot.

No no, I AM the victim here. I didn't hit the goose, the goose attacked me and probably makes jokes right now about me to its goose friends.

what does IAM have to do with anything (yeah I know that was really lame, you don't have to tell me)
but I've heard weirder stories, like the one of my friend being hit by a swan don't feel sorry for him though, he rides on a scooter

Only hills near me but some are tough enough for my needs. I did the combo of what I consider to be the worst two for the first time the other day (amplified by them only being a few kms apart).
Yorks Hill is only just over half a km but averages 13% with two sections around 20-25%. Toy's Hill is longer (for a southern UK hill ) at 2.6km at an average of 7%, it starts out gradually for the first km but then you're often climbing at 10%+ for the remainder.
Doing them both within 20 odd minutes was plenty enough for me...
As for sprinting speed you've got me wondering now. I think I can do around 45-50km/h on the flat but will give it a thrash next time I'm out to see (probably 50km/h is wishful thinking). One thing's for certain those few hundred metres are slower than Tony Martin averages for 50km...

Dunno, but I generally like your routes a lot Ian. I think they have a great chemistry and balance between enjoyment and challenge.

I topped out at just a hair over 80km/h once. It was downhill, but on the flat sprints I can hold a solid 55.

Like you I do enjoy fitting a few climbs in and I am lucky enough to have easy access to quieter roads too. Not that my performances reflect it but I'm guilty of focusing too much on the effort and not enough on the enjoyment sometimes - my ride to Box Hill was a case in point, I really enjoyed it but only glanced at the beautiful view from the top without stopping as I wasn't sure where the segment ended = silly
Of course improved performance itself is satisfying but I need to remind myself to enjoy the freedom and sights along the way! |

Like the new Strava handle Shonak, made me laugh out loud
Just on top speeds I remember hitting 112 kph going down Mt Donna Buang up in the Yarra Ranges not to far form my place, was in the full tuck with body on the top tube and chin resting on the stem, might not have been so safe but damn it was a rush!

Hadn't noticed the name change
Through 100kph must be a rush. I've occasionally tipped 80kph, that felt fast enough.
Btw how are you feeling after the all day epic Strydz? Muscles (and stomach) recovering ok? |

Did it make a clucking sound as you hit it? Oh, and did it survive?

Whoa! Hitting a roo can cause serious damage, done it a few times in a car including one where the car didn't make it. I know a guy who was doing his Everest attempt and hit one and broke a few bones
