Toughest I've done ? I don't know, I've done plenty. Generally it becomes very tough when you don't have the proper gear, or when the pace set by other people is too fast for you. On your own with the proper gears, there's nothing that can't be done. Perhaps I'd rate some 800 m at 18 % or something not so far from here, although it's a random road in the country land, above any mountain I've done ?
Still I'd say Alpe d'Huez, which I've done twice. Not that most of it is especially impressive, but the first 3 or 4 km are really tough (then one km with 3 or 4 km to go after you've passed Huez-en-Oisans or some other town). It's mostly tough because 1) it comes after a couple of km of flat on good roads 2) the first slopes are very steep, it's not progressive at all
3) the first km (or 800 m) are almost all in a straight line
To sum it up it feel like crashing on a wall, your speed drops from say 30 or 35 km/h to 6 or 7 in 10 seconds, and you can see where you're going, understand you won't get any relief, and that you won't be going there fast.
From what I heard, Madeleine and Glandon seem to be the most feared ones, with the Télégraphe + Galibier combo in the Alps. Tourmalet through La Mongie and Pailhères are the toughest in the Pyrénées. All TDF roads.

Do you cycle every day and do you live near the cols sorry if i sound thick but i dont no were Brittany is in France. Do you like to mainly cycle the climbs or do you mix, do you sometimes like to just go on a normal ride on the flat, or do you like to suffer alot. Man i wish i could swap place with you i love cycling becuase of climbing stages so for you to get to experiance it must be a great experiance im sure you would never like to move from France hey? |

Britanny is about as far as you can really get from mountains in France.

South of Britain (hence the name), ~13 h of train to the Alps via Paris and its tube. ~10-12 h to the Pyrénées. I went there during my Summer holidays, respectively in 2006 and 2007, with guys from Cyanide forums that I didn't know before (only knew them on the forums and MSN).
At best we've only got 350 m hills here in Western Brittany, but that already keeps me busy for 15 or 20 minutes when climbing from sea level. Max D+ for a hill in Eastern Brittany is rather 100 m, sometimes steep but not long.
As for how I ride my bike : it depends. Either it's an alternative training for running events, with lots of interval training, aerobic capacity and all that stuff, either it's just relaxation, or hunting KOMs for Strava or achieving some sort of Strava challenge.
I believe I'm done with competitive cycling, despite many people inciting me to sign a licence again.
I might take part in a few cyclosportives though, we'll see. |

Melbourne Hill Rd has been Everested!!!
https://www.strava.com/activities/1392...9/overview
353.5 k's 131 repeats and 8,909 vertical climbed with a moving time of 19.19.47 and total time of 23:53:12
I was not close to the same condition as when I smashed my 1st one so once I couldn't keep the food down after 6000 vert and some rain made descent very slippery after 10pm my pace dropped off pretty quickly and hit the wall hard! Once the last of many riders who came past over the ride left my body said it was done so just had to grind it out until I past 8848. One thing I can take out of this is that I now know how to suffer.... Oh and my 2nd Everst

Hmm, to be honest, I am just racing the hills around my town (and there are ALOT of them). They're not known at all because of cycling, as cycling as sport isn't very common here (sadly...).
However, there are some insane hills around here. There is like one hill on Southern entrance of the town and is long like 5-6 kilometers and that's probably the longest one. Average gradient on it is like 8% which makes it one pretty serious climb. I used to ride it almost every day from September to December last year.
But, on another side, there's huge amount of short and steep climbs around here. There's one almost in center of the town and I raced it yesterday: https://www.strava.../138796883 . As you can see, some of the sections are even over 29,5% on Strava, but I believe what Shonak and Strydz said and it's not so accurate. However, I can swear and I believe there are at least 20% there, if not more. There's also another one I raced and posted here (few pages back), which is steep as hell, too.
It's a really great terrain and place to live for cycling, especially if you are a climber (I enjoy these hills, really, but I am just sprinter-kind of rider and I just can't get used to them). I just wish that there is a 5km flat section with a possibility of making laps/circles. I would totally enjoy that, but it's just not possible here.

Congrats! Just leave some climbs for the rest of us (in my next life...maybe...).
What's next Olympus Mons-ing a climb? Or perhaps settle for a third round of Everest madness maybe even with a nights sleep beforehand this time! |

This beast https://www.strava.com/segments/616719 don't pay any attention to the overall gradient and look at the ramps
This is also a real steep mofo https://www.strava.com/segments/617898 it just doesn't let you rest
This one hurts https://www.strava.com/segments/793651
Hits 30% and someone Everested it a few weeks back
And the Grandaddy of climbs in australia https://www.strava.com/segments/649073 does not dip below 11% for the entire climb also it has a longer version https://www.strava.com/segments/609777

I don't usually go all out on the flat but certainly can stoke it up into the high 50's

Just worked out the math and it looks like I actually did 9039 vertical not the 8909 the garmin gave me. the 1st lot of rain we had sent it a bit haywire for a lap until I could wrap it up so ended up riding 2 extra laps than I needed.

On the flat, normal conditions : slightly above 50 nowadays. Well above 55 when I was a junior. I was quite fast, but nothing exceptional. Had I spent more time training on the track I could have had a chance to be faster. |
