Garmin - End of 3rd Season - Continue in PCM11
Anonymer
good job getting some more points, really hope he can keep the jersey

roturn
Thanks Anonymer. Still a close decision but I am quite optimistic.

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 19
Vinaròs - Xàtiva
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-19-1.jpg
2 early mountain sprints, which I hope to win with Van Der Velde. Then I expect a breakaway. But different to yesterday we want to give Rojas a chance and will work for him. The favourites can relax one last day before tomorrow`s hard mountain stage.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-19-2.jpg
The pace was very high in the beginning. Especially Astana did a lot of work. So Van Der Velde just got 1 point on the first sprint.
Then 3 riders were able to get away. Sinkewitz (Katusha), Monier (Cofidis) and El Fares (Ag2r).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-19-3.jpg
Lots of work for the Garmin riders today. Dao, Peterson and Fischer give their best to catch the breakaway. It`s looking pretty good, but now also other teams could really support us.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-19-4.jpg
With 19km to go Monier was caught as last of the former break. Now also NetApp is doing a lot and our riders can start the preparation.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-19-5.jpg
Maskaant brought Rojas in a very good position and also Hesjedal in the green jersey hangs on him. The sprint starts soon and lots of top sprinters in a great position.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-19-6.jpg
The sprint was dominated by the hilly sprinters. Ciolek wins ahead of Duque and Rojas. The finish was harder than expected, so also Hesjedal and Van Avermaet are still ahead of the pure sprinters.

tsmoha
Rojas is coming closer to a stage-win.. but at least he lost this one against Ciolek Wink Hesjedal again great!

roturn
Thanks Tsmoha. Actually Rojas has already one in the first week if I remember right. So minimum goal achieved. And Ciolek is of course a good one. Wink

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 20
L'Alcúdia de Crespins - Alto de Aitana
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-1.jpg
A pretty hard stage on the second last day. Can Hesjedal gain time on Cunego and beat him for the 2nd? And will Van Der Velde defend his KoM jersey? Contador and Cunego can overtake him by winning the stage, so he needs at least a few points.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-2.jpg
And he won the first sprint today. 4 points to him and so Contador and Cunego would need more than the 30 points on the final climb. Looking pretty good now for him. A great performance by the 68 climber. Wink
Next goal today is to defend his top 5 in the U25 rankings.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-3.jpg
7 riders in the break of the day. Silin (HTC), Kolobnev (Katusha), Wynants (Quick), Vanmarcke (Omega), Lisson (Androni), Mangel (Saur) and Sabatini (Liquigas).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-4.jpg
Also Astana has 5 riders in the lead the gap is growing constantly. The maximum is more than 10min, so will the break be successful today?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-5.jpg
7min left on the last 17km. But these are the hardest of today and the peloton also increased now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-6.jpg
After Menchov already tried an early attack, Coppel is the next one and Camano is following him. The big podium contenders are still waiting for the best moment.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-7.jpg
With 7km to go Hesjedal accelerates and creates a small gap. Will this be enough to beat Cunego today? It`s for sure another great performance by the Canadian.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-8.jpg
A group of 8 is coming back to them, but just Contador and Cunego are able to follow the high pace now.
Also the group just got caught, 7min in 15km is pretty much actually. Obviously they were totally exhausted after 3 weeks.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-9.jpg
Although he looked already pretty tired Cunego attacks. Contador tries to follow, while Hesjedal can`t. He continues in a very high pace.

With 1km to go the 3 are together again and Hesjedal goes with a very small advance on the last kilometer.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-20-10.jpg
But it is Contador, who was the strongest today. He wins another stage and celebrates the win of the overall as tomorrows stage is flat and shouldn`t change anything. Hesjedal on a good 2nd today but he wasn`t able to overtake Cunego. But the 3rd is still a great result for him. (Best GT result since playing extreme, without a real stage racer)
Also Van Der Velde will probably win the KoM ranking and keep the top 5 in the U25. Kessiakoff even improved today as 16th of the day and 17th in the overall now. And young sprinter Dao finishes the 2nd GT this year after the Giro. Great performance once again.

Congrats to all these great results Wink

Great job overall, Ryder did the business and you managed to pull off the sneaky KOM win with Van der Velde Smile

Great battle for 2nd place.. too bad Cunego was strong enough to defend it, but - like you said - it's a great result for Hesjedal! Especially with his stage-wins and some outstanding performances! Also the KoM-jersey is a nice addition to a succesful Vuelta for Garmin. Now it's time for Rojas on last stage Smile Anyway... Banana (well deserved)

valverde321
Yeah great job. As a Canadian its awesome to read this knowing it probably wont ever happen, atleast not by Hesjedal, so we'll have to wait a while.

dienblad
Great job. Last stage is ITT? If so, then you have one chance for 2nd place....

Pellizotti2
2nd is very good. Too bad Hesjedal couldn't shake off Cunego. Still a very good Vuelta for you.

Thanks all. Really much appreciated. Couldn`t agree more to Tsmoha. Great Vuelta again. Unfortunately (or probably better luckily) the other races aren`t that easy. Wink
@ Valverde: Well, you never know. Wink

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 21
Benidorm - Valencia
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-21-1.jpg
A great Vuelta deserves a great final. This year the finish is in Valencia.
Last chance for a prestigeous win in this year`s Vuelta.
Unfortunately Rojas isn`t in top shape after 3 hard weeks and guys like Ciolek are looking very great at the moment.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-21-2.jpg
Van Der Velde shows himself in the first rows. Lot`s of congratulations to the winners. After passing the 2 KoM sprints nobody can steal the jersey now. With a nice attack on the first stage he got it the first time. Then losing it for two stages and gaining it back on stage 4 till now. Great effort and probably his biggest success. He is mainly a loyal helper on every terrain but this proves that he is also capably of greater things.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-21-3.jpg
4 riders in the breakaway although it is very unlikely to see them winning here. Porte (Leopard), Gutiérrez (Movistar), Koren (Liquigas) and Da Dalto (Androni).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-21-4.jpg
NetApp, HTC and Garmin are doing the pace for Ciolek, Greipel and Rojas. RadioShack was seen quite rarely in the 2nd half as Leezer seems to be tired after all the mountains.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-21-5.jpg
With 10km to go Porte is caught as last one. No the sprint can start.
Maaskant was a bit behind, so Rojas took Fernandez` wheel.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Vuelta-21-6.jpg
But it is Van Avermaet. He started the sprint earlier than the rest and created a small gap that wasn`t closed until the finish. Great win for him and a big disappointment for the sprinters. Van Hummel and Rojas complete the podium. So not a win but a good finish for him as he will leave our team after this season.

+ 1. Another good result for Rojas, although I would have preferred to see him winning in Valencia Wink Congrats to a great Vuelta!

Boet
A podium position is always a good result! :-)

Thanks.

@ Anonymer: Indeed. Couldn`t be much more successful.
@ Tsmoha: Agree. Would have been a nice finish for him, but he just had 88 fitness left and Van Avermaet started the sprint with all sprinters doing nothing, so he had to go early , too and was overtaken by Hummel, who came from behind.
@ Boet: True. Especially as Hesjedal isn`t really a pure stage racer with this 78mo, 78hi, 71tt,71?rec.

Here the next two races I have played during the Vuelta. The two Canadian classics, both won by Hesjedal last year. Of course this isn`t possible this year, so Vansummeren might be our leader with Martin and Fuglsang as backup.
None of them is in such a good form, but let`s see what they made.
I haven`t done a big report here as I played them in my exam time and didn`t want to spend too much time. Was more likely a variety of learning to free my thoughts. Wink

Not sure which one is harder of them both. This one here has longer hills, but also longer flat parts and descents. So the winner should attack on some point to avoid a sprint.

Martin and Vansummeren both tried it with an attack as also some other riders, but no chance. The stage will be decided in the final uphill sprint of a big group.

Suprisingly one of the weaker puncheurs wins this one. Alessandro Vanotti of Liquigas takes the win ahead of Lhotellerie and A.Efimkin. Our riders missed the top 10 with Vansummeren being 12th as best one.
I actually like to see nice races with a weaker startlist, they are more unpredictable sometimes. And these two are just a very few races of this type I ride. (That`s why I like your academy races so much, Tsmoha. Wink )

As said, lots of hard and short climbs all over the course. Our goal is still to get a top5. In a good form Vansummeren would surely be a top favourite in this starting field and would also have the power to defend a gap on the flat parts. But his form is just average /~78-82)

With 15km to go Bakelants attacked and Vansummeren followed. The Lotto rider quite fast showed that he was the stronger one today and created a gap. But also Vansummeren was able to stay ahead of the pack, lead by Liquigas now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/09%20September/Mon-2.jpg
And he takes the solo win a few seconds ahead of Vansummeren and another few seconds to the peloton, where Jure Kojcan wins the sprint. Nice 2nd for Garmin here. Also impressive how the small Carmiooro team peformed today with two in the top5 and 5 in the top16. They were already pretty strong in Quebec. But best team here Garmin with 3 in the top8 as also Martin and Fuglsang had a small gap in the end.

Great Vuelta for Hesjedal, this is certainly a career milestone for him.
Also nice showing in Canada, these races are always a fun to play, strong ride by CarmiOoro.
Good luck for the rest of the season and i am really looking forward to see this story in PCM 11 in the future Smile
I'll be back

Nice result for Vansummeren in 2nd Canadian race. Yeah, this weaker startlists make some races very interesting Smile

Ahhh a Garmin-Cervelo win, would have been awesome there, since Cervelo was first started in Montreal, 16 years ago. Still great result though.

Bosskardo
Nice result in Montreal but wasn't the competition weak

Nice Vuelta result and good performance in Canada, 3 Garmin riders in Montréal Top-10! Good luck for the end of the season!

Also, I have a question: Are you continuing this story on PCM10 or on PCM11?
