Stage 19: Livigno - Como
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0020-3.jpg

This is an easier stage than the last several, but still have to be careful given the hilly finish. We wouldn't mind seeing a break win today.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0022-3.jpg
There is an early two man break, however following the early sprint, 13 of the sprinters take the chance to try and break today and soon it is a group of 15 which includes Boasson Hagen.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0023-3.jpg
As the lead grows, QuickStep and Saunier Duval decide that they don't want to see a break win today. We join in just to keep an eye on things.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0024-3.jpg
As we hit the next to last hill with the break still not caught, Tassinari decides to see if he can gain back some time ahead of tomorrow's ITT.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0025.jpg
Augustyn and Casanova have to counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0026-1.jpg
Rohregger goes as well, but fares better than the Discovery Channel boys, catching up to Tassinari.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0027-1.jpg
The pack soon reels them all in, however.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0028-1.jpg
Up ahead, some of the original break are still not caught. In particular, Iban Mayoz has gotten away from his break compadres and is trying to hang on for the win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0029-1.jpg
Mayoz is able to grab some more glory for Liquigas on top of what Campanile has accomplished in this Giro.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0030-1.jpg
Two more members of the break manage to cross the line before the pack swallows them up: Dotti and Masciarelli. Boasson Hagen was earlier caught by the pack but still manages to sprint for 4th.

With no more mountain points on offer, Remy Di Gregario has clinched the King of the Mountains. Edvald Boasson Hagen clinched the points jersey long ago. Augustyn just needs to perform at the ITT tomorrow and the Maglia Rosa will be his.

Stage 20: Canzo - Ghisallo ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0033-1.jpg

I've developed a very bad habit of failing to export results on time trials. I've at least figured out why. Normally after all the podiums I get the newspaper screen. I always hit next very quickly. On time trials that screen does not pop up but out of habit I hit next. Unfortunately, when I hit next I am already on the results screen so I miss the opportunity to export.

In any case, I'll skip straight to the only two results that matter:

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0042-1.jpg
Tassinari finishes with the best time of the day at 18'01". At the base of the final climb, he had a 40 second lead over Augustyn, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0043-1.jpg
Augustyn absolutely flies up the final climb. He doesn't win the stage, but he closes the gap to 10 seconds which is more than enough to preserve the maglia rosa. Unless he does something stupid tomorrow, he will win his first Giro and make the sponsors very happy.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0003-6.jpg
The days break gets caught before we hit Milano. As sprint starts, Boasson Hagen is looking to add to his collection of stage wins, however his position is not so great.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0004-8.jpg
Looks like Boasson Hagen won't win today. Instead, Stroetinga and Corioni are looking strongest.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0005-7.jpg
Stroetinga gets the win. A nice way for LPR to finish the Giro.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Giro/PCM0006-6.jpg
Augustyn gets the win. As predicted pre-Giro, Discovery Channel also claims last place in the GC. Ruben Cantoni proves to be the weakest of the 166 riders who made it through all 21 stages and wins last place in pretty impressive fashion. At least he learned a thing or two along the way.

Tassinari doesn't go home empty handed as he takes the best young rider award. For Discovery Channel, this makes 2 out of 3 sponsors goals that we've achieved. A massive improvement over the goose egg we laid last season.

Contract News

Discovery Channel

We've reached agreement to extend contracts with:

Luigi Sestili
Juan Van Heerden
Lars Boom
Jason Donald
Heinrich Haussler
Yaroslav Popovych
Kristof Nielsen

Zhou Sui has demand 70,000 euros/month and a team leader position. We don't want to tie up so much money on a sprinter when we are already paying Haussler quite a lot, so Sui will be racing elsewhere next season.

Other Contract Renewals

Major extensions recently announced include:

Rigoberto Uran extends with Euskatel
Antonio Garcia Gonzalez extends with AG2R
Phillipe Gilbert extends with Gerolsteiner
Luca Zanasca extends with Saunier Duval
Ignas Konvalovas extends with Rabobank
Marcel Wyss extends with Liquigas
Alejandro Valverde extends with AG2R

Past Winners

2007: Cadel Evans (Predictor Lotto)
2008: Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Eparge)
2009: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2010: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2011: Remy Di Gregario (Team Wiesenhof)
2012: John Lee Augustyn (Discovery Channel)

Last season, we capitalized on Augustyn's top shape coming out of the Giro to win the race. That will be the strategy again this time. While the field is quite strong, many of the big names are just beginning preparation for the Tour de France and will not be at their best. Augustyn is still in very good shape so will have an advantage.

Dekker, Menchov, Intxausti, Brajkovic, Belkov, Tatulyan would all be favorites if in top shape. Unless they surprise with their fitness levels, the winner is more likely to be one of: Augustyn, Pardilla, Plaza, Gomez Marchante, Nibali or Ulbrich.

Stage 1: Valence ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0001.jpg

Supposed to be an 8km ITT, however when we hit the course it seems the race organizers have decided to shorten it to 2km.

Sestili will be looking to add another time trial win to his list. Given his fitness relative to others, he should do well.

Stage 2: Valence - Bourgoin Jalieu
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0001-1.jpg

Flat stage, likely to be a sprint finish.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0002.jpg
The day's break is caught and it will be a sprint finish. Cav gets a great position on the Unibet train behind Boy Van Poppel. He'll need the positioning as he is not in top fitness condition yet.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0003-1.jpg
Feillu has caught Cav's wheel. Jurgen Roelandts is doing a great job pulling Van Poppel forward, which we benefit from.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0005-1.jpg
Full on sprint. Cav has dropped off given his fitness is not quite there. Feillu is looking good and trying to pass Van Poppel. Bonnet is in the mix on the outside.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0006-1.jpg
Despite Feillu's best efforts, Van Poppel will get a win. Still, 2nd at a UCI Pro Tour is more than Feillu has ever done for us, so positive outcome.

Stage 3: Vienne - Bellegarde sur Valserine
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0008.jpg

Hilly stage so should get our first leader change of the tour.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0009-1.jpg
Saunier Duval has the strongest team at this race. It shows as they push the pace through the hills and reduce the pack to only 31.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0010-1.jpg
There are no attacks as either: a) nobody has anything in the tank for an attack, or b) it's clear the Saunier Duval team can chase attacks down easily. In any case, it's turning into a downhill sprint finish with the Saunier Duval team in the best position.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0011.jpg
Of the remaining group, Ivan Rovny is one of the strongest sprinters. Unfortunately for us, he is pretty well boxed in.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0012-1.jpg
Plaza and Pardilla aren't, and they make a move to steal Saunier Duval's glory.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0013-1.jpg
It is a successful move, and Plaza will come away with the stage win and the yellow jersey.

Feillu goes in the break today, searching points. He takes the maximum at each of the two early sprints. He then falls back to the pack and the rest of the break is eventually caught.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0003-2.jpg
when we reach the Col de la Colombiere, Tatulyan is the first to attack while Augustyn and Mariani counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0004.jpg
The attack has caught many unprepared. Plaza starts to counter but needs to replenish his energy shortly into it. Garcia Gonzalez is right behind him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0005-2.jpg
Counter-attacks come also from Sanchez, Menchov, Dekker, Belkov and Nibali.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0006-2.jpg
Nobody was able to catch Tatulyan and Augustyn, who now sit at the front.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0007-1.jpg
E2 is 1 minute back and has Egoi Martinez doing all the work with Mariani sitting on his wheel.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0008-1.jpg
Another 14 seconds back is E3, a strong group of Dekker, Garcia Gonzalez, Menchov, Belkov and Plaza.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0009-2.jpg
Finally, E4 is 40 seconds back on E3 with Zanasca, Brajkovic and Ulbrich.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0010-2.jpg
Tatulyan and Augustyn (T&A for short) cross the peak with a 1'04 lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0011-1.jpg
E2 and E3 have come together before the peak.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0012-2.jpg
T&A build their lead through the descent and it stands at 1'31 with 1km to the finish.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0013-2.jpg
The enlarged E2 group is still together, Mariani is sitting on the back doing no work, like a good teammate.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0014-1.jpg
Tatulyan will win the stage in a sprint. Augustyn's second place finish is enough to take over the yellow jersey.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0015.jpg
Menchov takes 3rd.

Great ride

PCM 07 is notorious for rewarding aggression on climbs to a ridiculous extent, just go early enough, and you can win any climb with even a mediocre climber. Case in point, me winning two mountain stages and the TdF with J.I. Gutierrez (on normal, but nonetheless...)

Tatulyan falls halfway into the race today. The entire QuickStep team goes back to help.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0019-1.jpg
We were already leading the chase after the break and kick it up into an even higher gear to make it as difficult as possible for Tatulyan to rejoin the pack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0021-1.jpg
The best efforts of the pack to catch the day's 11 man break are looking futile. They have a 4'42 lead with 21 km to go. Van Eynde launche an attack to get away from his break compadres. Devolder follows.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0022-1.jpg
Devolder looks strong and manages to get away from everyone.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0023-1.jpg
He can't hold his lead, however, and is caught by 3 riders as the sprint starts. Ballan and Sabatini are part of this group so Devolder has no chance to win now.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0024-1.jpg
Ballan gets the win.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0025-1.jpg
Bonnet is the fastest in the pack.

In a travesty of justice, Tatulyan was somehow awarded the same time as the main pack although he never was able to close the gap.

I've actually noticed this more and more as of late. On this stage, I was lucky enough to have been moving Mariani and Devine forward to push the relay with Augustyn right behind them so he was basically at the front when Tatulyan attacked. Easy to counter.

The real attacks come with 38 km to go, and it is again Tatulyan who is the aggressor, attacking up the Col du Coq.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0035-1.jpg
Dekker and Belkov counter.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0036-1.jpg
As do Augustyn and Zanasca.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0037.jpg
The peloton puts it in overdrive and catches everyone. The strain of the pace, however, results in the peloton falling apart and a gront group of 22 emerging.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0038.jpg
Mariani goes front, puts down the hammer and actually manages to pull Augustyn away from the pack without an attack. Only Abram Garcia can follow.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0039.jpg
Tatulyan and Dekker are in a group that now consists of 15, a distant 1'40" back. There is one small group between them and Augustyn that consists of Intxausti, Pardilla, Sanchez and Reus, but that gap is shrinking

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0040.jpg
Mariani hauls Augustyn and Garcia over the top of the Col du Cog. One more climb to go.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0041.jpg
The Dekker group has caught the group containing Pardilla and Reus.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0042.jpg
The Augustyn group hits the Charmant Som with a 1'48" lead.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0043.jpg
Tatulyan attacks up the Charmant Som, trying to close the gap on Augustyn.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0044.jpg
He is quickly hauled back in and now Zanasca starts to attack.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0045.jpg
Where Tatulyan failed, Zanasca succeeds. He is on his own and has closed the gap to Augustyn to 1'11".

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0046.jpg
Dekker and company are picking up the pace and trail Zanasca by 23 seconds which means they have shortened the gap to Augustyn as well.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0047.jpg
With Mariani beginning to fade and the others beginning to close the gap, it is time for Augustyn to take matters into his own hands. He picks up the pace, leaving his teammate behind.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0048.jpg
Before long, he has left Garcia behind as well.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0050.jpg
He'll go on to a truly impressive stage win. He was feeling really good today on a +4, and the results show it. He absolutely crushes the field and looks a lock to win his second Dauphine Libere

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0051.jpg
Garcia is going to hang on for a strong 2nd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0052.jpg
Zanasca passes Mariani in the final km to take 3rd.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0053.jpg
Dekker pulls away for 5th.

With the attacks coming on the next to last climb and the pace it created, this has been a truly brutal stage. 26 riders failed to make the cut-off and were disqualified from the race.

Stage 8: Chambery Circuit

Did not get a screenshot of the race profile, however this stage is a circuit of Chambery which includes climbing up the Col du Revard three times.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0054.jpg
The action starts with Kreuziger attacking the second time up the Col du Revard. Rui Costa and Jose Angel Gomez Marchante will follow him.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0055.jpg
The leaders wait for the third climb, and it is Denis Menchov who goes first, followed by Augustyn who is on another +4 day. More attacks come from Plaza, Martinez, Dekker, Zanasca, Tatulyan and Belkov.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0056.jpg
As attacks settle down, Rui Costa is on his own in the lead after making an earlier attack on the second climb.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0057.jpg
26 seconds back are Augustyn, Menchov, Dekker and Zanasca

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0059.jpg
A further 41 seconds back are Plaza, Mariani, Martinez, Tatulyan and Belkov.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0060.jpg
Over the peak and down the descent to the finish. The Augustyn group have caught Costa.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0061.jpg
Plaza attacks to get separation on what was E2.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0062.jpg
Menchov and Costa are unable to keep up the pace through the descent and fall off.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0063.jpg
We hit the flat and the sprint starts. Dekker is pulling away.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0065.jpg
Dekker gets the stage win and Zanasca takes 2nd. These guys are going to be tough at the Tour.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0066.jpg
Plaza has caught Menchov and Costa.

i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Dauphine/PCM0067.jpg
Plaza sprints through to take 4th. Costa's 5th place is just reward for having been able to hold on following an early break the second time around up the Col du Revard.

Augustyn will win the Dauphine Libere for the second straight year. He also ends up taking the King of the Mountain while Mariani takes the young rider jersey. Good first race under extreme. In the end, Augustyn and Mariani were the most fit of the elite riders and were able to work together to take advantage of that. I'm a little worried about the Tour where it is pretty clear there will be a very strong field.

Tour de Suisse

Past Winners
2007: Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel)
2008: Gilberto Simoni (Saunier Duval)
2009: Janez Brajkovic (Euskatel)
2010: Jose Angel Gomez Marchante (Discovery Channel)
2011: Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel)
2012: Bauke Mollema (Ceramica Panaria)

While we were finishing up the Dauphine Libere, the Tour de Suisse got under way. Our team here is similar to what we sent to the Dauphine; a mix of in-shape Giro riders and guys warming up for the Tour de France. This will be Andy Schleck's only warm up race. If we are to do well here, it is likely to be Elia Casanova who gets us the results.

The field is not as strong as the Dauphine, although there are still some big names here. Gesink and Mollema start their Tour prep - Mollema is defending champion here. Amilcar is back from his injury and his presence here may be an indication that he will race in the Tour after all. In Switzerland, however, it is likely to be his teammate, Morca, who has the impact. Coming off a strong performance at the Volta a Catalunya he should be in sufficient race condition to challenge here. It will be interesting to see Tony Martin's race condition. He has logged an amazing number of race days up to this point of the season. If he still has something less, then he will also be in the running here. Danilo Di Luca could be the one to surprise everyone. He has been in a few races recently and might have the conditioning.
