- Daniele Bennati
- Yukiya Arashiro
- Aleksander Bespalov
- Guillaume Blot
- Lars Boom
- Tiziano Dall'Antonia
- Mitch Docker
- Konstantin Siutsou
- Antonio Tauler
Bennati is our leader here, after this he will have a long break and come back for Paris Tours and the Vuelta. In the sprints Docker and Dall Antonia have to help him and Docker may also choose to sprint for himself on some occasions. Tauler brings a bucketload of experience and will help, together with Boom, to get Bennati to the front when the sprinting starts. Bespalov, Blot and Arashiro are, together with Tauler, the guys who have to get the waterbottles for the leaders and at last Siutsou will be the man in the mountains but we dont expect anything from him altough competing for a stage win in a mountain stage would be nice
Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.
The 2nd mountain stage, again there was a break but they were caught quickly and because of the hard work a group of about 40 riders was formed with 80 kms to go!
Docker and Duenas are the only Nippo's that managed to hang on
They stay together until the 3rd climb when Duenas decides to attack early on, Noe and Ladino join him but the lazy pigs refuse to work :x
Duenas up front while Ladino and Noe are just sitting in his wheel...
And so because of the lack of cooperation they are caught and then a Kazakh and an Austrian get up front and one of them increases his lead and is currently virtually in the lead!
Left: Iglinski seems to be in great shape today! Right: Kohl tries to get back
Behind them there are 2 chasing groups
Left: Moncoutie leads a group of 6 with Lovkvist in it, Right: Beltran leads E4 who caught Duenas at the top
From there on there were no more photos, but as expected Iglinski defended his lead and won in front of Kohl. Duenas ended 16th again but does jump to the 14th spot in the GC while Maxim Iglinski is also our new leader!

Stage 6/6:
We trained well for this TT earlier this morning and it paid off, Tauler and Dall'Antonia did well but Boom managed to end 4th and Duenas was the biggest surprise ending 2nd! Lovkvist however was too strong but he doesnt manage to take back the jersey and so Maxim Iglinski wins.

Stage 1/21:
The opening TTT, main favourites were Liquigas, Lampre and Discovery. Liquigas soon made it clear that they wnated the maglia rosa immediatly by setting a great time. But then we came, we started slow and in the end it seemed that we had to make sure that we wouldnt lose too much time. But we came back, we were 2nd at the 2nd checkpoint and at the finish we were 7 seconds faster than Liquigas! To make it even better, Bennati crossed the line as first but perhaps it seemed that the win was in the favour of the teams that rode later on, as Gerolsteiner, who started after us...beat us by just a few hundreds of a second. And so Johannes Frohlinger takes the maglia rosa

losers of the day were the Selle Italians who lost over 1'40! Bennati has the same time as Frohlinger so when everything goes as planned, it seems that Bennati will definately get his hands on the maglia rosa, which is ofcourse the dream of every Italian cyclist B)
Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.
The first stage, it will probably end up in a mass sprint but the hilly ending could be used by some riders to launch an attack on. First there is an early break of 6 riders. Surprisingly Selle Italia sends its only sprinter along in the break (Lodd)
Loddo and Padrnos leading the group of 6
With 100 kms to go the pack starts to chase, and everyone knows that getting a puncture is one of the worst things that can happen when the pack ups the pace...
Gilberto Simoni punctures! Will he get back?
Saunier only decided to let Fernandez drop back and so Simoni would eventually lose 10 minutes today and so it seems sure that Ricco will be their lead. And then speaking of Ricco, on the big hill the pro tour leader himself decided to launch a surprise attack together with Landaluze and Petito!
Ricco follows Landaluze as Petito attacks aswell
And then Liquigas, Lampre and many other teams made a big mistake, letting Gerolsteiner, Nippo and Silence Lotto do all the work as they didnt think that Ricco would go all out this early on. But they were wrong, after letting Petito and Landaluze behind he continued to ride hard, increasing his advantage over the pack and witrh 25 kms to go he had 3 and a half minutes! And so Nippo's maglia rose dreams were also fading away. Lars Boom was so dissapointed about this that he launched a desperate attack on the last hill together with Celestino.
Left: Ricco...what a display of power...where's the pack!?! Right: Boom and Celestino fighting for the podium places
When Ricco crosses the line, 2 minutes and 15 seconds pass by before Celestino crosses the finishline with O'Grady, Boom and Bennati. And so Ricco wants to dominate the Giro early on, but will his attacking way of riding cost him energy that he may need in the last week? We'll find out in 2 weeks.
A much easier stage than the one we had yesterday, however Saunier Duval lets a big break of 11 get away
The break of the day featuring 11 riders
The pack reacts when they have a lead of 10 minutes with 100 kms to go but unfortunately everyone up front continues to do his share of work and so it seems that the pack has reacted too late, when they realize this up front we get the first attacks. 1 rider in the break manages to break loose!
Rojas Gil leaves the others behind as Van de Walle tries to join him!
Rojas Gil is strong but behind him the group starts to work well again, meanwhile in Cagliari some dangerous corners cause havoc in the pack and in one of those corners we have a crash with about 25 riders involved including some big names
Pellizotti gets up as also Sastre just got back on his back, Tauler was the only one from Nippo to go down
Initially Tauler was hurt but he did finish the race, tommorow we'll see whether he is still strong enough to continue. Meanwhile we had one abandonee:
And so the Giro is over for the 'Kiwi' who broke his wrist, up front Rojas fights for the stage win and since the pack has gotten closer Van de Walle can also forget about taking over the Maglia Rosa. Rojas looks strong but then the stronger riders in the break take him down in the final metres
Minard and Abakoumov sprint past Rojas, Abakoumov has to finish it off now!
Igor Abakoumov was the best sprinter in the group but Minard slowly increases his advantage over the Belgian Astana rider and so we have a very surprising winner today. Ricco stays pretty in pink while Bennati is 2nd in the bunchsprint behind O'Grady. Pellizoti, Sastre, Cuesta, Medina and Lowe all lose 3 minutes.
Everyone expected a bunch sprint but its Minard who takes the win!

The first tough stage in this years Giro, with the climb to Montevergine di Mercogliano being the first real test. Early on a group of 10 gets away with young Tiziano in it
Tiziano in the break together with Minard who won yesterday
Once we start climbing 1 man in the break seems too strong for the others
Phillip Deignan goes solo!
But once the Irishman gets caught its time for the favourites to show off, and then Saunier does something surprising. Piepoli takes off, all the Sauniers stop working and now all the favs are looking at eachother. Finally 1 km later Di Luca reacts while the young Basque Anton follows him surprisingly easy
Left: Piepoli on his own! Right: Di Luca and Anton are trying to join Piepoli
Behind them many others then attack, while Ricco stays in the pack other guys like Cunego, Plaza, Parra, Nocentini and many others attack. Plaza has the strongest attacks as he creates a gap with the first big chase group
Left: Plaza trying to gain some time on others, Right: Parra leads the 'Gruppo Cunego'
In the back Ricco still doesnt do anything and this asks for questions, was the cobra not strong enough or was he just acting? It doesnt matter really since his teammate takes the win while he keeps the jersey. Di Luca and Anton also gain time while Siutsou does what he is supposed to do, he stays in the 'Gruppo Maglia Rosa' and ends 21st.
Victory for Piepoli, he and Ricco are now 1 and 2 in the GC

Would the sprinters suceed today? Not a single sprinter has won thus far and the hill at the end could make it difficult for the sprinters once again. Since we didnt want to miss out on any break this time Tauler got up front in a group that existed out of 15 riders!
The big break...do the sprinterteams even care?
Since no one in the break is a threat to Ricco's lead it takes quite a long time before the pack reacts but ofcourse since a Nippo rider is in it the pack actually gets close, on top of the hill they still lead by only 1 minute and the group is down to 8 riders...
Tauler leads the break that is about to be caught
But then 1 rider in the break gives it 1 more go
Boucher attacks!
And to everyone's surprise the sprinters bite the dust yet again, today its David Boucher who wins...
David Boucher wins the 5th stage!

A nasty stage but since there are a lot of descending kms some sprinters still have a shot at winning today. Since breaks have been quite succesful thus far there were also lots of riders today trying to get away, a group of 10 gets away but when we are almost on the top of today;'s biggest climb there are only 3 riders left over
Bespalov, Missaglia and Quinziato up front
While many people are already surprises that Bespalov is amongst the best 3 climbers in the break he even proves to be stronger than Missaglia. With 20 kms to go its down to Quinziato and Bespalov with the pack behind at 2 minutes!
Bespalov and Quinziato, will they surprise everyone by making it?
Meanwhile in the back there are quite alot of crashes since there is alot of rain falling down, amongst them is one of the favourites!
The number 2 in the GC, Piepoli falls! He would lose 6 minutes today!
Meanwhile up front the pack can see the escapees, in the pack some riders get nervous and attack in order to catch the escapees
Bespalov and Quinziato up front but Rebellin is almost there!
With 2 kms to go Rebellin catches them, but Bespalov doesnt want to give up and attacks once more but with 1 km to go he and Quinziato know enough, they wont be winning today. In the sprint they are taken in and Bespalov would eventually end 9th.
Bespalov is caught with the finishline in sight
Todays winner is a sprinter who managed to hold on...

Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.
A stage for the sprinters today, however even though O'Grady won yesterday we havent seen 1 mass sprint so far and thats what makes this Giro so exciting, the sprinter teams dont have any control over the race which makes it more interesting for the attackers. As Ducrot would say it, 'dit is het nieuwe wielrennen' --8) Thats why its very strange that early on only 1 rider breaks away. Its the Frenchman Lesvenan who goes solo
Arnaud Lesvenan on his own
His solo lasted 160 kms and when he was caught the pack took it easy. But then with 40 kms to go two Spanish riders attacked, Landaluze from Euskaltel attacked but then had a puncture, leaving Quick Steps Carlos Barredo alone up front. It seemed to be a suicidal attack since he was on his own against the pack but by maintaining his lead on the climb he had 4 minutes with 20 kms to go! One can only wonder how Barredo did it, was he so strong, did the sprinterteams not care or were the sprinterteams just so weak? Fact is that Barredo gets rewarded with the win even though he only wins by 50 seconds which means that Ricco stays pretty in pink.
Where's the pack? Barredo on his way to a spectacular Giro win!

Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.
Bespalov only needed 2 points to grab the KOM jersey, and so he attacked early on just so he could grab enough points to take Piepoli's green jersey
Bespalov is now the leader in the KOM classification
After this we again had a solo, this time it was Pavel Padrnos who escaped but didnt get anyone to go along with him
Pavel Padrnos all by himself
And then on the climb we got a surprise attack, Gibo who already lost lots of minutes attacked together with...Barredo who's at it again!
Barredo and Gibo up front!
First it seemed that they would make it because everytime Barredo took over they didnt lose time, however Simoni isnt that strong on the flat roads and so they were just caught! Bennati followed O'Grady but this didnt seem to be a smart decision. O'Grady and Bennati had to come from far...
And yet he wins! O'Grady wins while Bennati did get stuck with 200 metres to go and ends only 12th...

Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.
Still no mountains, meanwhile Bennati seems to be worried about himself since he hasnt got a win yet. And personally I think Bennati's season will end in dissapointment, already yesterday he came to me saying he was starting feel tired already after 5 months into the season... Back to the race, Docker decides to attack today and after the climb only 3 riders manage to join him
Docker and Missaglia together with the French Minard and Boucher who have won already
In the sprint Daniele follows O'Grady again, but this time his bad placement is just bad luck. Robbie McEwen cuts him off his line and Bennati falls to the back...he still fights back for a top 10 spot thats all. Meanwhile the O'Grady domination stops as Robbie and Ale-Jet fight it out for the win!
Victory for Alessandro Petacchi!

Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.
The first mountain stage, a group of 12 gets away but after a while its down to only 1 rider
Fertonani up front
But ofcourse the real action takes place on the final mountain, and unfortunately Siutsou has to let go quickly, he is already tired and today I noticed this as he ended 38th and so we have something else planned for the Belarussian. Up front Piepoli tries to get away but then the little prince comes! Behind him Di Luca comes but he just cant reach him
Left: Cunego attacks! Right: Di Luca on the chase, will he get back?
The answer to that question is, no. Cunego was too strong and wins the first real test.
