Classics Fantasy Game 2024

Big scoring from the Hornets yesterday, they win back a few places. Also some nice results for the Fainthearts, Cobblers and Bombers.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Yeah, not bad for us, but not outstanding, either. Hofstetter probably punching above his weight, but De Kleijn simply not showing anymore why he often was Merlier's main competitor earlier in the season. I guess that except for Hofstetter, that's the end of the classics campaign for our sprinters - pretty mixed feelings, especially about Kooij who didn't quite deliver in the few occasions he had.

Now hoping for some great luck for Bettiol in Paris - Roubaix!

Interesting race yesterday. Despite an impressive win by Mathieu, the W only score 3rd best. The Racoons (Pedersen + Vermeersch) and the Cobblers (Philipsen + Wright) both score better.

For my own team, great race by Pithie. Theuns and Segaert were there but couldn't make the top 20. Asgreen is a complete disaster. No idea what happened to Turner.

How many French races are there?

13/04/2024Tour du JuraCT2
14/04/2024Tour du DoubsCT2
14/04/2024Amstel Gold RaceWT1
17/04/2024Flèche WallonneWT1

I'll admit, the names are less funny with the calendar changes, so let's just call this one block 8. Two of the bigger WT Classics with Amstel and Fleche and 2 minor French classics. The Mathieu dominance could continue, but he only does Amstel.

Just a small overview of the top 2 picks from each team in between. Out with big problems are De Lie, Vermeersch, Van Aert, Evenepoel, Stuyven and Thijssen. Other guys that missed big races are Laporte, Van Baarle and Mohoric. Then there's guys with a very limited program like Ganna, Kooij and Roglic. Just to say we all (well, most of us Pfft ) are struggling at the moment.

So I will need your startlist by saturday morning 10 am cet again.

Great, we get another win - just unlucky that Cosnefroy wasn't on the startlist at the moment of selection (which was still almost empty by then), and I picked the wrong wildcard...

Still, good to know he's in form, let's get the Ardennes started then!

So, to make sure I don't forget the nominations:

Fainthearts Block 8
SCHMID Mauro
COSNEFROY Benoit
GAUTHERAT Pierre
BARGUIL Warren
GENIETS Kevin
TRONCHON Bastien
PEREZ Anthony
CAPIOT Amaury

Disappointed to see none of the French riders on the startlist of either of the smaller French classics, as that was exactly the hope when signing them. Still nominating Tronchon and Perez, you never know ^^
Otherwise, all-in for the Ardennes with Cosnefroy and Barguil!

Not a lot from me lately...

Spokes Block 8:
HEALY Ben
MOHORIC Matej
JORGENSON Matteo
LAURANCE AXEL
MATTHEWS Michael
ULISSI Diego
MCNULTY Brandon
DEL TORO Isaac

Hoping the UAE domestiques can figure something out in the two WT races and the Mohoric actually does come back for Fleche

Yeah, Cosnefroy I really didn't get that, he always was so good in this race. I had actually already given him the 100 points, but when checking if others were on the startlists, I noticed he was missing as well. You're defnitely not alone though, Hermans (6th), Braet (9th) and Honoré (12th) were also not selected. And how good is that Blackmore guy no one drafted?

I'll post the rankings after the last race on friday, although I don't expect massive scoring there.

Yeah, missing out on Honore is another lowlight in a really bad run for us here. Evenepoel's injury is a massive blow, since his only reason to be on the team was a hopefully strong Ardennes campaign. Milan crashed out of PR, Venturini seems to miss out on the French races despite a very promising season so far. Rui Costa has missed the whole season injured, so our best hope for the Ardennes might be Madouas, who's been much more miss than hit up until now. But maybe he can still turn it around.

Might still change this, but just to have it for now:

59ers Block 8:

MADOUAS Valentin
KRAGH ANDERSEN Soren
ALBANESE Vincenzo
ZIMMERMANN Georg
CORT Magnus
VENTURINI Clement
PRADES Eduard
VAN EETVELT Lennert

First of all thank you to Tim Wellens for being such a great guy. And to De Bondt for being present at yesterday's race as a teammate.

Block 7 results

We started in Scheldeprijs where the Hornets dominated the Sprint even without De Lie. Merlier showed Philipsen once again who wins when it comes to raw sprint power. Roubaix was another race where there was no competition for Mathieu, although it needs to be said his team was very strong as well.

Brabantse Pijl went to the non-selected Cosnefroy, probably the biggest selection mistake of the game, but far from the only one this round. Finally the undrafted Lenny Martinez wins his second classic of the game, with a few other misses from our managers.

Team W(athieu) defend their lead in the rankings, but the gap goes below 100 points. The Racoons are second thanks to great team depth, but it's very hard to gain more against a seemingl unbeatable rider. The Cobblers win round 7 and go back to 3rd, but their main scorer Philipsen probably ended his classic season after Roubaix.

The Spokes drop to 4th after a bad round caused by DNS's from Jorgenson and Mohoric in Roubaix. Also a bad round from the Zondagcoureurs who did not count on Pidcock, De Bondt and Gaudu for this round. The Rogues and Red Lanterns both had decent rounds and stay in the fight for the top 5.

The comeback from the 59'ers might have stranded after a bad crash by Milan in Roubaix. They only just hold off the Hornets, but I don't know how to rate their young Ardennes squad. The Fainthearts probably focused too much on Scheldeprijs and pay the price as they drop to 10th.

The Macros had another bad round as Laporte's return did not get the result they were hoping for. None of the other teams out of the top 10 took advantage though, the Ice Tulips, Hussars and Bombers all had low scoring rounds as well.

And the rider ranking, Philipsen put up a fight as long as he could, but unless Van Gils does something crazy, Mathieu will once again be the best rider this year.

Not really, I just nominated everyone who was on a startlist, and as there were just 7 riders I tried to guess who else could participate somewhere... Bettiol crashed early in Roubaix, that was obviously the biggest bummer and basically sealed the zero-pointer there.
Feels like I'm not really lucky with "startlist guessing"; had Cosnefroy already been on the Brabantse Pijl startlist, I'd obviously have selected him... Don't like these nominations a week in advance with almost empty startlists, but that's part of the game.

When speaking of nominations, a small update:

Fainthearts Block 8
SCHMID Mauro
COSNEFROY Benoit
GAUTHERAT Pierre
BARGUIL Warren
GENIETS Kevin
ASKEY Lewis
TRONCHON Bastien
PEREZ Anthony

At least one starter now in one of the French races with Askey - not that it would matter, but still ^^
