May 6: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f3/Flag_of_Switzerland.svg/20px-Flag_of_Switzerland.svg.png Tour de Romandie – Stage 5 | Lausanne – 20,4 km

Today’s time trial won’t decide the winner of this tour as there’s no way Kashechkin is going to lose 2 minutes on anybody on a 20 km time trial. It’s a quite beautiful scenery on this time trial as it’s located at Lake Geneva.

We hope that Andy can gain 8 seconds on Cunego today and hold off Dekker by 38 seconds, so he can finish 2nd in the GC. Zabriskie is our main guy for the win today as he’s also getting in really good shape and he will be crucial for us on the TTT on the Giro’s opening day. But he’ll have difficulties beating Dekker however.

Our guys really rode a fantastic time trial as we had 6 guys in the top ten. A rather outrageous result actually, but nevertheless we’re very well pleased about that.

Stefan Schumacher had best provisional time as Vandevelde, who before today was 17th in the GC, took off, and eventhough looking weak at the first intermediate time (as did all our riders at that point), he managed to grind his bike of the final climb very fast and he beat Schumacher by 19 seconds, meaning we now had 4 guys in the top ten as Arvesen, Gustov and Ljungqvist all rode fantastic time trials. The next top favourite to take off was Paolo Savoldelli, who rode dissapointing on yesterday’s mountain stage, but the italian failed yet again to show his normally fantastic time trial abilities as he only managed provisional 7th best time.

img518.imageshack.us/img518/5305/savoldellivandeveldetr5lx4.jpg
Vandevelde concluded a brilliant CSC dominance so far by beating german time trial specialist Schumacher with a wide margin.

Right thereafter it was Dave’s turn and he had turned the heat up even further as knocked off another 19 seconds and dropped Vandevelde to a provisional 2nd best time. The next riders were not able to match Zabriskie’s time, but as 6th in the GC Thomas Dekker took off, things got more serious. He was very fast at the first intermediate but we knew he would lose time to Dave on the last part of the course and he did. But not enough as he edged out Dave, clocking 28’02, 7 seconds faster than our American time trialist.

img213.imageshack.us/img213/4243/zabdekkertr5mt4.jpg
Dekker was in excellent form as he beat a phantom time from Zabriskie with Lake Geneva in the background.

The next rider to take off was Alejandro Valverde, then it was Marchante before Schleck would dride down the ramp. Two minutes after Schleck, Cunego would take off before the last rider of the day Andrey Kashechkin would start the last 20,4 kilometres of the 61st Tour de Romandie. Marchante couldn’t do much as he only finished the day 25th, 1’13 off the pace of Thomas Dekker. So he wouldn’t progress in the GC. Valverde also needed to come up with something special if he was to hold off the comeback of Dekker in the GC, but the spaniard wasn’t at his best today as he had to settle for 11th, 48 seconds off Dekker, meaning he would overtake Marchante in the GC while also would be overtaken by Dekker. So status quo in the end for Valverde.

Andy did a very good time trial and he gained more than 8 seconds on Cunego. The only thing he had to worry about was Dekker. He couldn’t afford to lose more than 38 seconds on him, otherwise he would lose his virtual lead in the young riders competition and his virtual 2nd spot in the GC. But he didn’t as he finished the day in provisional 4th best time 30 seconds off Dekker, meaning he would lead him by 8 seconds in the GC.

The next rider to cross the finish line was Cunego but he didn’t do well as he was only the 23rd best rider before Kaschechkin would cross. The kazakh was trailing Dekker on the intermediate and he didn’t gain on him as he finished the day as 3rd, 15 seconds off Dekker. So Dekker took the stage and moved to 3rd in the GC, while Kashechkin succesfully defended his overall lead to become winner of the 61st Tour de Romandie. Andy finished an astounding 2nd, so there is now place for him to hide when the Giro takes off on Sardinia in 6 days. I’m really looking forward as I’m very happy with Andy’s form.

Andy is in really good shape as he took 5th on today’s final stage of Tour de Romandie, to move to second in the final GC.

img223.imageshack.us/img223/5599/cunegokashechkintr5ct2.jpg
Cunego wasn’t in his right element as he lost his lead in the young riders classement, Kashechkin on the other hand defended his GC lead without any problems.

Cunego won the Points Competition while Mertens won the King of the Mountains Competition. Andy was best young rider and Astana was the best team.

A perfect preparation for us in the end as Andy really showed us what he’s made of. We had no idea and no expectations he would go this far, so it’s a remarkable result by him. Also Dave and Christian show they’re ready to support Andy in the Giro as they also gain very good GC results.

Well, Jan Svorada retired from cycling two years ago, last season riding for Ed'System - ZVVZ. What database that is?

As far as I remember, it was called Freenet in the previous version. Freenet has also been present in this year's version along with Ergomo.

As all I can think about now is the Giro and as I’m no way near France right now, I’ll just give you the results from the first 4 stages of this tour. Matti Breschel made his race comeback here, after he went down injured in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, two months ago. The final stage is ridden simultaneously with the 1st stage of the Giro, so I won’t have knowledge about before we have ridden the team time trial at Sardinia.

Presentation

After Iván Basso was banned in connection with the Operation Puerto, the Giro Crown is going to change hands in this 90th edition of the first Grand Tour of the season. Last year Iván Basso put up a sumerhuman effort wasting the rest of the pack in his wake. This year it’ll be up to the second best riders to challenge each other on the steep slopes and the demanding time trials, that will set the GC in this fantastic tour through Italy.

The Route

The 90th Giro d’Italia takes off on the Island of Sardinia, where GC favourites will be looking to get a good starting-point by leading their teams very quickly through the opening team time trial. The next two stages also take place on Sardinia, before the Giro moves to the mainland, where the fourth stage will have a very intriguing mountain top finish. The rest of the tour is more or less taking place on the Italian peninsula, despite two detours to respectively France and Austria.

Then after having covered 3442 km of Italian (and som French and Austrian) road, the pack crosses the finish line for the penultimate time of the 90th Giro d’Italia in Milano, where we should be in for the traditional mass sprint finish. Beneath is a profile of the entire race.

img259.imageshack.us/img259/1570/altimgensmqx7.jpg

The Favourites

Gilberto Simoni (SDV) www.extrascents.com/images/5_star.gif: One of the most experienced and best stage racers in the peloton is unarguably home-favourite Gilberto Simoni. He’s won the Giro twice in 2001 and 2003.

Strenghts: Fantastic climber, who normally is impossible to wear down during three weeks. Is backed up by an incredibly strong team including Gomez Marchante, Riccó, Gil, Mayo, Piepoli and Millar

Weaknesses: Poor time trialist. This is where he can lose the tour. Fortuneately for him there’s only one long flat time trial.

www.cyclinghalloffame.com/riders/pics/simoni_g3.jpg

Damiano Cunego (LAM) www.extrascents.com/images/4_star.gif: Il Piccolo Principe or “The Little Prince” as he’s called will no doubt show up to the Giro with sky-high ambitions after he won the Giro three years ago in the tender age of 22. Back then he wasn’t paid any notice by the other GC favourites, meaning he wasn’t kept on a leash. This year he has to prove he can stay with the favourites in the mountains.

Strenghts: He’s a fantastic finisher when it comes to settling things in a small group on the top of a mountain and he can wear down riders like Simoni with his incredible acceleration on the slopes. He has a world-class helper in Marzio Bruseghin.

Weaknesses: Like Simoni he doesn’t handle the time trials to perfection. He showed some improvement in last year’s Tour de France, but we’re still far from certain that he can avoid losing time on the time trials against the other GC favourites.

newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41893000/jpg/_41893654_firstbreak416.jpg

Alberto Contador (DSC) www.extrascents.com/images/4_star.gif: Maybe the biggest Tour talent around, this guy has got the whole package. His endurance in the mountain is incredible, he has a fantastic acceleration and he’s a good time trialist. If he’s peaking under this tour, the other GC riders should be on the lookout for him.

Strenghts: Enduring punchy climber. Great time trial. Backed up by Janez Brajkovic and the always strong Discovery team.

Weaknesses: Maybe a bit too inexperienced. Has been some way off his peak so far this season.

www.20minutos.es/data/img/2007/03/20/573087.jpg

Danilo Di Luca (LIQ) www.extrascents.com/images/3_star.gif: After fighting for a long time in the top of the GC in the 2005 edition of the Giro, Di Luca got psyched and declared a Giro win as his ultimate goal. But the following year he wasn’t able to match Ivan Basso or Simoni, Cunego and Gutierrez for that matter. He hasn’t been strong in the Ardennes, but it seems like his form is coming together though, so maybe we’re in for another Di Luca show.

Strenghts: Decent climber, very punchy. Experienced. Backed up by Franco Pellizotti.

Weaknesses: His time trial is lacking. Prone to off-days in the mountains.

www.cyclingphoto.com/Finish_Di_Luca_web_CP.jpg

Michael Rasmussen (RAB) www.extrascents.com/images/3_star.gif: We’re a little unsure regarding Rasmussen’s GC credentials in this race. Normally we’d see him peak during the Tour de France, but maybe he’s given up on winning the Tour de France because of the long time trials. This Giro fits Ramussen very well as there’s a mountain time trial and only one long flat time trial, as this race is really dedicated to the climbers.

Strenghts: Terrifying climber. Fantastic endurance through 3 weeks. Flair for tactics. Strong team.

Weaknesses: Very poor time trialist.

Outsiders

Andy Schleck (CSC) www.extrascents.com/images/2_star.gif: Could be the revelation of this tour after a fantastic performance in the just raced Tour de Romandie, where he finished 2nd in the GC and took a stage win. On the mountain stage he took 2nd behind race winner Andrey Kashechkin and he took 5th place on the final time trial. These results backs this young mans talent up as a coming Tour winner.

José Rujano (UNI) www.extrascents.com/images/2_star.gif: Rujano won the King of the Mountains Competition in the Giro in 2005 and after a dissapointing 2006 Season he will be looking to do something big in this tour.

Eddy Mazzoleni (AST) www.extrascents.com/images/1_star.gif: Astana’s only possible GC rider is Eddy Mazzoleni, as Savoldelli surprisingly decided not to take part in this year’s Giro. He lacks a bit on the mountains but he’s a strong time trialist. But in order to compete for the win, he has to be in the form of his career.

Dario Cioni (PRL) www.extrascents.com/images/1_star.gif: The 32-year old italian will be looking to improve on his 5th place in the 2004 edition of the Giro. Being a former mountain-biker, he has the abilities to climb with the best when he’s at his best and his 2004 Italian TT National Championship contributes to the fact that he’s a very well-round rider.

Igor Anton (EUS) www.extrascents.com/images/1_star.gif: This young Basque rider has a great future ahead of him. He won a fantastic mountain stage in last year’s Vuelta after leaving all the favourites in his wake on the final climb. He has no GC results in the big tours yet, but maybe this Giro will provide him with his first.

Get ready for the 90th Giro d’Italia

Stage Profile

img404.imageshack.us/img404/4861/tappa01profilose9.jpg

Team: Andy Schleck, David Zabriskie, Christian Vandevelde, Volodymir Gustov, Fábian Cancellara, Nicki Sørensen, Bobby Julich, Luke Roberts and Kurt-Asle Arvesen.

We had to make a change in the roster just before the Giro. Michael Blaudzun should’ve raced here, but he decided that we would rather save his energy until later in the season and then race the Vuelta as a domestique for Carlos. Instead Bobby Julich stepped in and he’s going to be a great addition eventhough he doesn’t plan to finish the race. Neither does Cancellara.

Today’s stage is 24 km long team time trial and in order to help out Andy as much as possible, we’re aiming for the win here and also we have a very strong team of time trialists counting World Champion Cancellara, American Champion Zabriskie and Norweigean Champion Arvesen.

First team to take off was Caisse D’Epargne, whose best hope for the GC must be the russian Vladimir Karpets. They clocked a good time that lasted for quite some time. But as Cofidis and Bouygues crossed the line, they were already down to 3rd.

Predictor-Lotto who had brought Dario Cioni as their captain didn’t do very well as they finished the day 53 seconds behind the winners. Liquigas with Danilo Di Luca, did very well however as their italian captain guided his team to a provisional 4th best time.

img258.imageshack.us/img258/7744/liqprlgi1bd9.jpg
Di Luca got off to a great start as he and his team rode a great time trial on the 1st stage of the Giro d’Italia.

Quickstep was quite awful today. They haven’t brought a single guy capable of riding a decent GC, instead they have a lot of very heavy and flander’ish guys, who can’t put together a decent time trial. They finished the day as the slowest team, 1’19” off the winners. Rabobank had brought a quite interesting team with guys like Michael Rasmussen, Mauricio Ardila and Pieter Weening, and they did a quite good job on the time trial, finishing in provisional 4th.

img510.imageshack.us/img510/418/qsirabgi1kk1.jpg
Quickstep and Rabobank contrasted each other resultswise today.

Eddy Mazzoleni was appointed leader of Astana as they took off on today’s stage, but despite Mazzoleni’s own TT abilities they couldn’t muster up anything better than 15th at the end of the stage. Lampre with Cunego as their designated leader did much better however as they together very good on this very technical time trial as they finished in provisional 4th knocking Rabobank one step down to 5th.

img408.imageshack.us/img408/8787/astlamgi1pp3.jpg
Lampre really believes in Cunego as they rode him in a great position today. Mazzoleni didn’t get the same back-up by his team.

One of the most interesting things in this year’s Giro is that Alberto Contador has enlisted for the race. You would expect him to ride his chance in the Tour de France of the Vuelta, but he has apparently decided that he’ll have a go at it here. But Discovery didn’t do very well as they rode 1 second slower than Caisse D’Epargne who was now down to 8th. Saunier Duval has brought a terrifying team for this Giro to backup team captain Gilberto Simoni and I’ll be very surprised if they don’t win the teams classification with riders like Ricardo Riccó, Angel Gomez Marchante, Koldo Gil, David Cañada, Iban Mayo, Leonardo Piepoli and David Millar. And the brit lead the team to provisional best time.

img407.imageshack.us/img407/6896/dscsdvgi1qa6.jpg
Simoni can really look to his team as they can provide fantastic backup for him.

After Saunier Duval it was Milram’s turn and after the italians it was finally our turn to commence the Giro d’Italia 2007. Lead by Cancellara and Zabriskie we’d very high hopes for this time trial as we’re normally very strong in this discipline. We also won the last team time trial in last year’s Giro. At the intermediate times we didn’t look to good however as we were some 20 seconds off the leaders at both intermediates, but then we cranked the pace up a notch. Nicki had to drop however, but we managed to claim the best time, 7 seconds faster than Saunier Duval. We were going to win now as the remaining teams posed no threat to us. The last team to finish was Gerolsteiner, who finished in 8th.

img529.imageshack.us/img529/1472/cscgstgi1eg8.jpg
Cancellara lead us to victory, while living Ardennes legend Rebellin couldn’t help his team much on the opening stage of the Giro.

Christian Vandevelde will ride the 2nd stage in the maglia rosa as he crossed the finish line as the first CSC rider. Zabriskie was 2nd so he’ll wear the maglia verde and Schleck can already now wear the maglia blanca as he crossed as third, but also because he’s our only U/25 rider in the Giro.

img401.imageshack.us/img401/995/logojl5.gif

The first regular stage of the Giro could turn out to be pretty interesting as there is a quite tough hill near the finish in Bosa, where we could see some of the classics riders try to break away to take a stage win.

As leaders we had to take charge in the peloton today. The only ones not relaying was of course Andy but we decided to let Christian have a “day-off” as he is wearing the leaders jersey.

The TV-break consisted of 5 riders with a Bouygues-guy trailing them throughout the day. The Bouygues rider was Labbe and he was trailing a group with Rabon (TMO), Contrini (TCS), Van Goolen (DSC), Hernández G. (EUS) and Morabito (AST).

img403.imageshack.us/img403/5358/cscfrergi2ir7.jpg
The reverse of the medal of having the leaders jersey is that we have to work a whole lot.

img403.imageshack.us/img403/9246/udbryderegi2yv7.jpg
The first breakaway of the Giro being chased by one of many french Bouygues riders.

The gap topped with 90 km to go as Lampre, Liquigas and Saunier Duval took the front and began reeling in the leaders. With 50 km to and 3 kilometres to the infamous odd hill the lead was cut to just 2’20” and they were bound to be reeled in very shortly.

It was a 7 km long climb and as the pack had raced two of these seven kilometres, Cunego attacked. Andy tried to follow with Di Luca, Nocentini and Simoni. Short there after the breakaway riders were caught and they fell back to the pack.

img165.imageshack.us/img165/1880/cunegoangribergi2ck4.jpg
Cunego is super-determined as he launched an attack on the leader’s jersey already on the 1st stage.

img404.imageshack.us/img404/2193/andysimonigi2th8.jpg
Andy and Simoni couldn’t quite follow the acceleration of Di Luca and Cunego on the short climb.

Andy joined up with Simoni but they gave up the chase and fell back to the pack on the descent, where we’d put forward all of our guys to try and reel in Cunego and Di Luca, who were caught up by Nocentini on the descent, who came out of nowhere.

With 14 km to go the three italians lead the pack by 47” and it seemed to be an impossible task for them. But they kept motoring and at the home stretch they had a small lead. But they were going to make it.

Cunego opened the sprint with Nocentini and Di Luca in his wheel. Di Luca was used up however as he couldn’t muster up a good enough to finish. On the final metres, Nocentini tried to go past Cunego, but it was too late. Cunego claimed the win. The pack finished on level terms so we had defended the jersey as Cunego gained 20 seconds on the line, when he needed 29.

img252.imageshack.us/img252/3218/cunegovindergi2bx1.jpg
”The Little Prince” won the first stage in a fashion very similar to the one he won in Tour de Romandie, some two weeks ago.

Vladimir Karpets came in 4’11” after Cunego in a group also counting Bobby Julich, who might abandon the race alongside Fábian on the rest day.

The plan is to finish in the top 5 with Andy, but it's going to be tough though. You're right I need a strong team for later, but the reason I brought Cancellara was to win the TTT. He doesn't want to race the Giro, so in order not to lower his morale I'll let him abandon soon, eventhough he would be an incredible helper.
