EPIC - Giro d'Italia 2013
Luis Leon Sanchez
I want Quintana to win just for nacho and because knockout has had horrible luck.

Hope you record the ride with strava then. Grin

Well, it was just a comment on the side. However, it was only 5 kilometers uphill and in PCM it's a bump in the road basically and the lead kept itself despite a high pace in the peloton. Gorka Verdugo flew up that hill. Cool

Stage 12
i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/s12_zps9f9678d3.jpg

After two rides for the climbers and fighters, we return to flatter terrain and provide with some good chances for the sprinters to snatch another victory. The competition has been fairly even so far, however with Brouwer’s late struggle and Hanzen out of the mix for GT contention, the youngsters may have to suffer a blow today. Omega Pharma and Cavendish are surely hot for another win, while many sprinters have yet to perform a sign of life here. And of course there’s always room for a breakaway win.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_41_58-Greenshot_zpsf52aa71e.jpg

A day for the breakaway? With only 124 kilometers, the riders may not even need the best of legs to get a big enough lead and it’d be alright. A familiar face is up there once more with ever-active Hoogerland (VCD). His companions are Gusev (KAT), Rathe (GRS) and Malori (LAM). There’s also Azanza from the Euskaltel squad, whose rider Gorka Verdugo won yesterday, and the team clearly took the words of their manager to heart after the first week, and they are now on a constant stream of attacking, making it the fourth breakaway in four days. After roughly 30 kilometers, there lead is already around 4 minutes.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_47_01-Greenshot_zps57f10eb8.jpg

Since he’s only 4 points behind Quintana in the KoM classement, Hoogerland is of course eager to get those points. He gets the first three at the KoM sprint and he’s likely to get another 3 later on. Meanwhile, things ain’t looking too good. The lead is solid at 4 minutes, but it doesn’t increase. Bardiani work for Brooks, Omega Pharma for Cavendish and Orica GreenEdge for Goss.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_50_38-Greenshot_zps464ba327.jpg

It’s the same at 30 kilometer from the finish. Hoogerland gets his points and thereby will claim the Maglia Azzura. Since the peloton is with 2 minutes too far away, he’s likely to stay the only one out of the breakaway who will have claimed something today. The sprinter teams are presumably set to make this a stage finale for their boys. Over the very same hill, the brutal pace of the peloton causes some splits in the peloton and around 40 riders drop. However no GT contender is involved.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_55_04-Greenshot_zpse058fe4b.jpg

Look who came back just for today: Willem Brouwer is back from his days of non-performing, just in tiem for the last 10 kilometers. The breakaway riders are still upfront but are presumably set to be caught. Nibali keeps himself in the mix of the sprinters. There’ s Petacchi and Cavendish, there’s Hanzen leaded out by Swift, and a Orice GreenEdge comes up too.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_57_00-Greenshot_zps61274032.jpg

Still 5 kilometers and Hoogerland pushes for it. It wasn’t a long stage so he may have enough power still to keep the peloton away for the remaining distance?

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_58_01-Greenshot_zpsd40d40a5.jpg

Bardiani seem to have found the right formula at last with 3 guys building the lead-out for Brookes, who enjoys a perfect cover for this finale. However, Keukeleire rushes aside them to lead Matthews & Goss to another hopeful victory for the Manager. Brouwer is on Goss’ wheel. Seems like the Dutch may have found his cunning positioning again.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2219_59_40-Greenshot_zps4e119b8e.jpg

2.2 kilometers! The breakaway is still up there! Colbrelli launches, Nizzolo is there and Calzone on his wheel. Matthews comes upfront on the other side. Hanzen and Cavendish get lead out from further back out.

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2220_00_56-Greenshot_zps16d5f4e0.jpg

What was yesterday pure joy for Gorka Verdugo, is for Rathe (GRS) the breaking point now. One kilometer. He’s leading the race. The peloton comes up from behind. Hope for anything or much ado about nothing?

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2220_02_02-Greenshot_zpsf2a4e32e.jpg

300! No more words!

i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b543/Sh0nak/Team%20NetApp%20-%20Endura/Giro%202013/2014-04-2220_02_23-Greenshot_zpsfab2d145.jpg

Unbelieveable! It’s Rathe who survived against all those sprinters today. A fantastic showcase from here. He can really show his chest proudly with the team’s names after that thrilling finish. Goss misses out narrowly on his second stage win by coming in second ahead of Bennati.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jakob Rathe, he did it! He really pulled it off! Wow! That's the sort of stuff i want to see from my youngsters (real rider though Wink), fighting all the time, till it pays off! Smile

This was a 120 kilometer long stage. It's not completely out of the equation for a breakaway to make it here today, especially when a guy like Rathe is in the group (SP 70 or 71) who just pushes it over the line. Those things happen IRL too. Wink

Can we stop bitching about the AI please? Ok it's really not great but we can't do anything about it.

Hazen with another Top10 result. For the next round of upgrades i'm gonna have a real dilemma on how to progress him. Could give him an extra bit of sprint to get more normal podiums. Up the Hill to give that more of an edge on harder stages. Or go down the support stat route and hope that makes the difference....

The AI is shocking but lets not that hamper a great win for Garmin ;) There really isn't anything we can do about

the thing that annoys everyone is when you think the peloton has the break and then let them go again

I know, but it was extra annoying that:
1) The breakaway just won, Keisse-style. If they won with 4 minutes, it'd be less frustrating, especially since it seemed that they'd be reeled in.
2) Brouwer was finally back, and now this Pfft

I want to complain but I don't have a reason for it ...

damn AI Pfft

Gusev hanging on to ninth, but more could have been possible..

The only frustrating thing is that OPQ still denies to build up a solid lead-out but I blame the lack of "AI career form" for that.

Other than that, this stage was completely legit and had no weird AI at all (well - maybe that Bardiani did the prime lead-out but that's onto Brookes or whatever the heck their EPIC rider is called with 80 SP). The peloton looked never liked "they caught the break" now, they just came constanly closer but the break was too strong eventually. Again, this was a legit stage and therefor legit racing. No AI mess up in the finale. And I personally liked it because it surprised me in a positive way.

@Shonak
Well, I just trust the reporter Pfft

The breakaway riders are still upfront but are presumably set to be caught.

It's okay though, just hope Brouwer gets his chances.

Another good report and nice to see the guys trying a bit harder now. If we just make sure to be in every single break anything can happen Wink
