Vuelta a Pais Vasco Stage 1
The opening stage of the Vuelta a Pais Vasco is a 154 km ride with 6 categorized climbs, three of them cat 2 and a cat 1. The final climb tops out with 6 km to go, but it shouldn't be too hard. Expect a reduced bunch to sprint for the win.
The Race
Here is the day's break. Only two riders have decided to put themselves into the wind today. They are Jonathon Monslave of Vini Fantini, and Sergey Firsanov
of RusVelo.
Monslave and Firsanov traded the first two KOMs. On the second climb, Caruso of Cannondale and Txurrka of Caja Rujal have attacked the bunch, and are bridging over to the breakaway.
With 80 still to ride, Rabontini has attacked from the bunch, and is riding across the gap to the now four man leading group. The leadres have around 3 30 to the Movistar-led peloton.
A split has formed in the bunch during the descent of the climb! The main riders caught behind are the whole SKY team and Cervero of FDJ are around a minute behind the now-flying peloton.
Most of the riders were able to rejoin with the exception of Henao and Cervero. Meanwhile four riders are trying to get away. They are: Frank of BMC, Kelderman of Belkin, Hinault of AG2R, and Monfort of Radioshack.
After about 10 km of chasing, all the riders off the front have come together as Firansov takes the points at the last cat 3 climb.
Firansov has decided he wants a little more TV time for his Russian team, and has taken off on his own with 20 km to go.
Just as Firansov is caught, Robert Kiserlovski takes off with Igor Anton in hot pursuit of the Croatian.
Unfortunately for Kiserlovski, his only reward for his efforts is the KOM points, as he leads the 80 man peloton over the last climb of the day. The stage will surely end in a sprint for the win.
We jump to one km to go after the peloton walked down the descent. Michał Kwiatkowski is flying right now, and is pulling away Samuel Sanchez.
400 m to go, and Moreno is closing the gap to Kwiatkowski fast. Can the Polish rider hold on for the win?
Yes he can! Michal Kwiatkowski takes the first stage of the Vuelta a Pais Vacso! Another 5 meters and Moreno would've had it. LL Sanchez in third for Belkin, and Movistar leader Costa takes fourth.

Good report!
Good to see Sanchez sprinting 3rd, but it should've been Riquelme contesting that one..
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

A pretty good 11th there from Franco Pellizotti. The team showing their strength with everyone finishing in the main first group. Shalunov with a good performance rolling over the line in 50th comfortably.

A great opening stage there. RadioShack continue to be a force to be reckoned with, some top 10s in the next few stages are expected. |

Nice report!
@Nacho
I'd say:
Not a great hill + bad STA + bad support + bad luck.

It's hard not to laugh at Cervero. He really is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Okay start for us, good to see Frank active while Evans downed some more XXXX in the bunch. Or whatever it is, the useless old fart does these days.

Maybe if we all stopped making jokes about him, he would do well.

Too pessimistic.
Surely he can achieve another Top 191?

He, just like Burton in Catalunya, appears to be working for Sinkeldam. Your whole team was in there. Ridiculous PCM logic.

Not sure why Caruso attacked, but at least he showed that he wants to get something out of this race. |
