STAGE 17: Men Tou Gou - Yong Ning 160 KM

With two hard climbs towards the finish there is the terrain for some attacks from the GC men.
We would have a solo break today.
There is no break with 112 KM to go when Boaro (Banco do Brasil) is allowed to get away by himself.
Marlon Perez attacks......
With 65 KM to go Boaro has 2'20 over the peloton when the Celesio rider attacks out of the peloton, it does not take long for him to catch the Italian and subsequently drop him.
With 17 KM to go and Perez riding strongly @ 2'00 on the penultimate climb......
towards the top 3 big names attack. They are Popovych, Morkov and Mizbani.....
The short final climb is reached... The three attackers have caught up with Perez......
Behind the likes of Veikkanen are off the front of the peloton and the 'cream of the crop' such as El Fares and Hernandez come to the front in aim of catching the dangerous Popovych group. Hansen puts in a small attack but he gets no where.
van Hecke is dropped..... after clinging on, he is the only GC man to be dropped. Lemoine is safely in the GC group so it looks like he will me moving on up today in GC.
Morkov leads the strong group over the final climb with 9.5 KM to go they have '30 over the chasers but they are a strong group....

Perez is dropped, the yellow jersey group haven't caught the three attackers and the attackers will therefore contest the sprint...
It will be a flat out drag race between Morkov and Popovych for the win...
Popovych takes the win for Bluebell Creameries!
Morkov may have been the fastest sprinter but Popovych had more left in the legs in the final. Mizbani, super aggressive as ever, moves up into second place in the KOM rankings but never looked like challenging for the stage win against those two nuggets!
Morkov and Popovych finish '28 ahead of the Koenigsegg led yellow jersey group and reduce their time gap to the GC leader Hansen. Lemoine does move into the top 10 and has a claim of being the 'most all round' rider here.
Construtora AJS lead the UC rankings comfortably despite not winning a stage yet. In the UC rankings only 11 points separate 5th - 10th place.

Great to see the comments on the racing everyone, it really makes it more enjoyable . Although I do miss duxili's analysis as of late.....
A shame some people, who have a squad here, hardly ever comment here (not since the TTT) even though it is a 'community story'.

Lemoine does move into the top 10 and has a claim of being the 'most all round' rider here.
 Tell me about it, dude is like crazy consistent. He's only missing a stage win so far. If it hadn't been for the 2-3 minutes on the cobblestage where he helped Mosquera, he'd be like 6th or 7th. Still, we have only 7 riders left in the race and our toughest opponents can rely on a full team for the TTT, so I don't expect him to hold the 10th place, probably end up 13 or 14th, which is still a fantastic result.

We enter Lord of the Rings country today. However, the terrain in New Zealand is flat so a sprint is on the cards.
11 riders make the break: Huffman, vandousselaere, Lancaster, Sorensen, Shipilevski, Jarrier, Metlushenko, Mol, Marinangeli, Reimer and laterne rouge Windsor (167th @ 2'41'00) are the men in the break.
Bjergfelt of Construtora AJS followed by Cartoon Network and Alcyon begin to chase and the break stands virtually no chance of succeeding today.
Under 5 KM to go, everyone is together.......
Klostergaard, Bobridge and Barbe try to attack.... but don't get clear of the peloton.
We would have a sprint. The racing has been pretty easy today so many sprinters will have plenty in the legs for the finish........
Cartoon Network start the sprint once again, Lemoine unleashes the green jersey.......
Leezer is right next to Dean as behind three Alcyon riders are waiting for the right moment today.....

Sutton comes alongside Dean with many poised behind, the Kiwi wants to win in his home country but has been sprinting longer than anyone else...........
STAGE WIN ALCYON!
The 'super sprint team' of Alcyon finally deliver a stage win in this TOTC thanks to a long one from Sutton. Dean faded in the end and ends up in 5th, his lowest sprint finish here. von Hoff and Schorn round off the podium with fast finishes as only 2 riders fail to finish in the bunch.
Alcyon have three fantastic days with podium places on stage 16,17 and 18. Sutton's victory means the fastest sprinter 'in accepted opinion' has won at least one stage in each TOTC.
