Here is the May news bulletin from Skoda - Orlen Professional Cycling Team:
April was a key month for the team as they took part in their first ever WorldTour race, the Tour de Romandie, as well as preparing for the huge race that is the Giro d'Italia. Whilst we may have only won two races this month, both provided by Borut Bozic, we picked up a whole load of podiums and top tens. Peter Velits' magnificent time trial at the Tour de Romandie clinched a top ten spot there, whilst Kocjan, Der, Bole, Spilak and Hutarovich all scored good results this month.
Peter Velits was inspirational at the Tour de Romandie and a superb time trial provided him with a top ten overall against a strong field.
Our rider of the month is a close run thing between Velits, Bozic and Kocjan, but for his outrageous performance at the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, the award just goes to Kocjan. He also picked up great results in Frankfurt and at the GP Miguel Indurain.
Image of the Month
Borut Bozic takes a comfortable victory at the Himmerland Rundt in Denmark, the first of two victories for the Slovenian sprinter this month.
May Race Preview
May is dominated by one race, the Giro d'Italia, and luckily, we don't have to watch it as we're going to be taking part! There are very few other races for us this month, but we do have two races in Germany, the ProRace Berlin and the Bayern Rundfahrt before, at the end of the month, the SEB Tartu Grand Prix in Estonia.
Transfers and Contracts
We continued to negotiate with Kiserlovski but he wouldn't budge and it looks like we will be losing the promising Croatian climber in October. We will try one final time come July to do a deal. Elsewhere, we will be waiting until after the Giro to decide other transfer deals and contract offers, but the manager has already stated his interest in Slovakian superstar, Peter Sagan.
The Future
We have been scouting far and wide throughout April but we haven't found anybody to add to Volovyk in the team yet. Ideally, we are looking to sign at least two more neo-pros, but the right rider hasn't been located yet. We are continuing to monitor the U23 results and there are certainly some great results for Eastern European riders. Expect movement by the end of May.
And Finally...
Skoda - Orlen Professional Cycling Team have applied for a wildcard for the big one, the Tour de France. We didn't really filter the Tour into our plans for the season, so should we get accepted, it will be an interesting team selection. However, we won't be too fussed if we don't get a wildcard.
See you on the roads in May,
Any questions, suggestions and general feedback are welcome. Please don't be afraid to give your opinions. The management team are always willing to answer

The first Grand Tour of the year, the Giro d'Italia consists of 21 stages. There is a prologue, one team time trial, one individual time trial and 18 road stages. After a lot of criticism that the 2011 route was far too hard, this one is a lot less demanding, with fewer mountain top finishes and, infact, there are no mountains at all until stage 14. Here is the route:
Spoiler
The race starts in Denmark with a prologue and two flat stages that should give early chances to the sprinters that have assembled here.
Spoiler
After the transfer back to Italy, all 22 teams will have to do their best over a 32km TTT around Verona followed by another sprinter's stage.
Spoiler
The race then starts to heat up with three hilly stages. Stage six should see the punchier sprinters fight it out for victory or possibly a breakaway. The following two stages have uphill finishes, with stage 8 being particularly horrendous with a very steep climb after 229km of hard racing. All of these stages are over 200km, which will be the main problem with the next rest day being miles away.
Spoiler
The halfway point of the Giro is marked by several "easier" stages interspersed with hilly stages. Stage 9 should end in a sprint but it is very bumpy at the end of the stage, whilst stage 10 has a gentle slope into Assisi that should see the punchers fight it out. Stage 11 is extremely long, but only has two real climbs, so the sprinters should have another chance. Stage 12 is another lumpy one, but there shouldn't be any big moves on GC and the breakaway could have another chance here. Finally, stage 13 looks like a rest day for the GC contenders with just 121km almost certainly ending in one of the final chances for a bunch sprint.
Spoiler
The race finally hits the mountains on stage 14 with a very long climb up to Cervinia, while stage 15 contains a hell of a lot of climbing before finishing on the steep Pian dei Resinelli. The potential winners will be examined thoroughly on these stages. After the second rest day, stage 16 takes the riders on a gentle climb all day before it ramps up steeply at the end.
Spoiler
Now the race comes to its potentially thrilling conclusion. Stage 17 contains four big climbs before a downhill finish, which is infact the only high mountain stage that isn't a summit finish. Then stage 18 marks the final chance for the surviving sprinters and a rest day for the GC contenders. Then, we come to the King and Queen stages of this race, stages 19 and 20. Both of these stages have 5 categorised climbs with a tough uphill finish. Stage 19 finishes on the devilishly steep Alpe di Pampeago, while stage 20 crosses the Mortirolo before climbing the massive Stelvio Pass. This should be a day to fear and then forget for the non-climbers. As usual, the Giro finishes with a medium length time trial in Milan. If the GC isn't already settled, this is where being good against the clock will be a huge advantage.

Giro d'Italia Preview Part Two - The Overall Contenders
Race Favourites
Cadel comes into this race as the best climber and with his TDF victory behind him, he will be trying to show that, at 35, he has another Grand Tour in him. He has the support of Pinotti and Morabito in the mountains to make that happen.
Another rider heading towards the twilight of his career, Scarponi is, whether he treats it as such or not, the defending champion here after Contador's victory was taken away. The only thing stopping him from challenging for victory will be his relationship with Cunego. Will Damiano help Scarponi or hinder him?
Nibali will always be a challenger in the Grand Tours because of his excellent TT ability as well as his outstanding descending. His problem in the past has been the one terrible day that ruins his chances. Can he be consistent enough here? He has also only just come back from an injury sustained in Paris-Nice, is he fit enough to challenge? One final problem is his team, Liquigas, who have only sent one other climber, Basso! That will be interesting.
The young Dutch pretender, Gesink has been touted as a Grand Tour winner for a few years now, and when required, he has certainly shown that he is a dynamic climber, but can he avoid the crashes and climb to victory here? Just like Nibali, he crashed (what a surprise) out of Paris-Nice and has only just returned. He'll need to limit his losses in the first week while he builds his fitness up. He also has the great support of Bauke Mollema and Ten Dam here.
A pure climber, Anton will need to gain his time on the uphill finishes if he wants to challenge here. His main support will come from Astarloza and as usual, you can expect him to lose loads of time in the TTT, as Euskaltel are not the best in that department.
The second of Liquigas' GC contenders, Basso may be thrust into the leader's role if Nibali's lack of race fitness should prove to be disastrous. Either way, Basso will always be up there in his home race, but could his lack of an explosive kick on the shorter climbs cause him problems on the numerous hilly stages?
Outsiders
The tiny Venezuelan climber was impressive in last year's Giro, winning a stage and being the only one who could stay with Contador's massive attacks. Can he do it again with the support of Sella and Serpa?
Lotto's main man van den Broeck is another rider touted for success in a Grand Tour, but as of yet, for a variety of reasons, it hasn't quite happened. Nobody can doubt his climbing ability, but is it good enough to make up for his average time trialling? He has woeful climbing support aswell, with van de Walle the only rider in his team who you could really call a climber.
Just like Rujano, Frenchman John Gadret had a very good Giro last year, winnng a stage and fighting hard in the mountains. And, just like Rujano, he is a pure climber and will need to do something incredible in the mountains to really challenge.
Slovenian Janez Brajkovic carries the hopes of Astana into the Giro. A very good climber and time triallist, his main problem could be his lack of recovery, but on the other hand, a very strong team should be able to look after him more. The likes of Tiralongo, Kessiakoff, Iglinskiy and Masciarelli will be key for Janez.
The sensation of last year's Vuelta, Kenyan born Chris Froome will be very keen to show that he isn't a one hit wonder here. He has solid support from Rogers and Lofkvist as he aims for the top ten.
Veteran American Tom Danielson comes here as Garmin's leader, and he will be looking to show that he can mix it with the big boys once again.
Best of the Rest
An absolute guaranteed stage winner here, Cunego will surely have to sacrifice his overall push for teammate Scarponi. Nevertheless, he will be very prominent in the hilly stages and will probably end up in the pink jersey at some point in the first couple of weeks.
As usual, Pozzovivo comes to the Giro with no support as his team mates will all just be trying to get into breakaways, but he'll always give it 100% and never rule him out of a top ten place.
This could be his final Giro, so 38 year old Garzelli will want either a stage win or a fantastic GC placing. Either way, he will be very active in the mountains.
Slovakian Peter Velits carries the hopes of the new boys Skoda - Orlen as they tackle their first ever Grand Tour. He is a very accomplished all rounder and should feature near the front at some point.
Similar to Velits, if not quite as good all-round, Intxausti is Movistar's leader here and will probably go for the climber's jersey or stage wins in the mountains. Look out for the dangerous Spanish team in the TTT.
With Contador no longer around, Chris Anker Sorensen is forced to step up to the plate and give the GC a go. His complete lack of time trialling ability means he needs to take the mountains on if he wants to get anywhere near the top ten.
Tyler Farrar is the quickest man here and so starts with all the pressure for the first two road stages in Denmark. He really should win at least one stage here.
Yet another old Italian hoping for one last hurrah. He should be the main rival to Farrar and should have a lot of support from his team, Lampre. Should be a cert for a stage win.
The young Russian, Galimzyanov will be looking to fulfil his potential here with the weak-ish sprinters' field. Will he be able to cope with the demands of a tough three week race?
One of the new Italian sprinters on the block, Guarnieri will be trying to wrestle a victory from the much older Petacchi to bring forward the end of Ale-Jet's career.
Spanish sprinter, Ventoso will be pretty much alone for the sprints as the bulk of his team are climbers. However, he has the experience and the tactical nous to know where to be.
Another of Skoda - Orlen's talented leaders, Bozic has a genuine pedigree for placing high in Grand Tour sprints and if his inexperienced team can position him well, just watch him go.
AG2R's sprinter, Ravard would love to make a breakthrough here, but is he good enough for this top level?
Another French sprinter, this time FDJ's Bonnet. He would appear to be a better bet than Ravard but you can never predict what will happen in the carnage of a mass sprint.
Experienced Aussie Davis will be GreenEdge's best chance of a stage victory here as they haven't brought any climbers. Because of this, you can guarantee he will have a good leadout. However, GreenEdge have also brought Mcewen and Impey, so will they themselves know who to back?
Another Aussie, and this time it's one with a point to prove, so beware. Renshaw has finally parted from Cavendish and will want to show that he isn't just a leadout man. Can he perform?
Vacansoleil's man for the sprints will be Dutchman van Hummel. He is a solid, if not spectacular sprinter who, like all the others, will be trying to get in amongst it all.
Another young Italian, Oss is Liquigas' fast finisher for the Giro. But is he fast enough?
Colnago's Modolo may not be quite as quick as his rivals, but, being Italian, you can be sure that he'll perform beyond his abilities here.
Another Italian from the Pro-Conti teams, Ferrari should be able to challenge the quicker guys just like Modolo. And with a name like Ferrari, surely he must be quick!
Giro d'Italia Preview Part Four - Skoda - Orlen Team
-Our overall leader is Peter Velits. We will be trying to get him into the top ten on the GC, which will be very difficult but we'll give it a go.
-The secondary goal here is of course to win a stage. The best chance of that could very well be with the recently improved Grega Bole on the hillier stages. He is very much a free element.
-Borut Bozic is our sprinter for the flat stages and whether he can challenge Farrar or Petacchi is questionable, but third place is still up for grabs, and that would be very nice indeed.
-Robert Kiserlovski starts the race as a luxury team mate and will not be required to do any work for the team. However, once the race hits the mountains, he will be on the attack to try to get either the KoM jersey or a stage win. In desperate circumstances, though, he will of course drop back to help Velits.
-Sylwester Szmyd and Leopold Konig are Velits' main climbing domestiques. Szmyd will not leave Peter's side once we hit the mountains until he absolutely has to. Konig will be a key man over the first few climbs of the day, so he can relieve some of Szmyd's work. Leopold will almost certainly get some time in the breakaways in the first week aswell.
-Andriy Grivko and Oleg Chuzhda are both very similar and will be big helps in the TTT, sprint leadouts and in the smaller climbs. They will be the workhorses of the team and if they're not directly helping their team mates, they will be doing it indirectly by attacking and being in breakaways.
-Stanislav Kozubek is, again, of vital importance in the TTT, but other than that he will be the bottle boy. His primary task will be to look after either Velits, Bozic or Bole on the flat stages and when we get to the mountains he will keep Bole/Bozic safe inside the time limit, whilst making sure they use as little energy as possible.

I have just finally catched up with the latest action, great story you have here. I like the riders and quality of your reports
Some nice results in the first part of the season, especially the wins of Bozic after lot of 2nd places.
Good luck at Giro with Velits, my favourite rider of the peloton. It will be very tough to enter the top 10, the startlist is brutal...
Edited by Avin Wargunnson on 23-02-2012 06:26
I agree with you about the startlist, there are 8 riders with 80+ in MO, so for the top ten Peter will need to beat some better climbers, but let's hope for the best.
I hope I can perform at the best of my abilities throughout the Giro aswell.

ICL's World Tour Champions and Talented Bottlers
Well, we couldn't really have asked for a tougher challenge in our first ever GT. This could get very messy for us in the third week, but we have to hope that the experienced riders like Szymd and Bozic can keep the younger riders on track. I wouldn't look too far beyond Cadel and the Italians here for the battle for pink. Both Liquigas and Lampre have weak teams beyond their leaders, though, so they will have to work with each other should they need to. Both Nibali and Gesink have huge question marks over their fitness, so Basso and Mollema could very well end up as their teams' leaders.
Further down the list, you can count on Colnago, Vacansoleil, FDJ, GreenEdge and Quickstep to be very aggressive on every stage, whilst the new Australian team will probably do very well in the team time trial but fade to near anonymity once the roads go uphill.
There are several interesting teams to watch for in this Giro. At Sky, will Froome or Rogers carry their hopes? Can Radioshack do anything with none of their multitude of leaders here? How will Dani Moreno do for Katusha? And how will Saxo Bank fare as they begin life without Contador?
All these questions and many more will be answered over the next three weeks. Let's hit the road.

ICL's World Tour Champions and Talented Bottlers
So here we are, in Denmark, to start the Giro. Everybody in the team was visibly excited this morning (including me!), whilst Peter has been focusing very much on his prologue today. We're hoping for a great result today from Peter.
Due to his surname, Zabriskie is always one of the first to start, and he was one of the favourites today. He set the fastest time so far with 11'54, but there was an awful long way to go.
GreenEdge's rouleur-heavy squad was today led by Cam Meyer, the young Aussie smashing Zabriskie's time by 9 seconds.
Home favourite, Marco Pinotti will be a key man for Evans in this race and he showed his good form by going 4 seconds quicker than Cam Meyer, the new benchmark.
The huge Italian time trialling talent, Malori, was in great shape in the Tour de Romandie and he continued that here going an astonishing 8 seconds quicker than Pinotti! That would be hard to beat.
On to the team leaders and Peter Velits was out on the course, wearing three 1's on his back. The nerves were certainly jangling in the team car, but not in Peter's legs as he went a magnificent third, 9 seconds down on Malori, just behind Pinotti.
Next up was Michael Rogers, who seems to have been given the early nod by Team Sky to lead the team here. And he made the most of it today, going second, 7 seconds down.
The Slovenian TT champ, Brajkovic is also a very good rider against the clock and he got closer still to Malori. Second, 6 seconds down for Astana's leader.
Next up, Garmin's leader Tom Danielson was lighting up the course on his way to a fantastic second, just 2 seconds down on the brilliant Malori.
The public were getting their first look at Nibali's shape today and, well, it's terrible. The Italian went 69th, 35 seconds down on Malori, with the same time as Grega Bole! He still managed to beat Gesink, though, who looks in even worse shape.
The final rider was of course, Evans, who was the stage favourite for good reason. He is a fantastic time triallist on his day, but he's not quite there yet and he had to settle for 15th, 18 seconds down on the first Maglia Rosa, Malori of Lampre.

Team Summary
Great start for us as Peter gets straight into the top ten with a fantastic ride, whilst some of the other favourites were poor. Nibali and Gesink were both over half a minute down, with Pozzovivo, van den Broeck, Sorensen and Anton also losing a lot of time over 8km. However, their time losses pale into insignificance in comparison to AG2R's Gadret. He finished third here last year, but he starts tomorrow 193rd, well over a minute down. Hmmm...

Amazing Giro preview, must have taken very long amount of work to write but it's a great read Very interesting team for Giro. The GC field is very good for Giro so it will be tough for Velits, but with some luck Top 10 is possible, he has also very nice support.
Bozic should get very nice results as well, but with lower flat stat and without a great train he will struggle to win, but Bole is the rider that I think should get you a victory somewhere, good luck
Already a very good start with Velits, bodes well.

Really nice Giro preview Brewers!
Hope you get a stage win perhaps along the way and be nice to see Velits get off to a flyer
Fancy a trade of Giro routes? the race that my poor Youtube lads are riding is a nightmare, 9 mountainy and 4hilly stages alongsiude the 2 TT's is making for a pretty exhausting ride!
Wow, you did an absolutely stunning work with the Giro preview. I can spot some big names in the startlist, Velits must fight hard for his top-10 goal in the end. So far, he's done a good start, and really positive, to begin with.
The first road stage is a fairly long one but it is also very flat, as you would expect in Denmark. The first "mountain" of the Giro comes halfway through the stage to crown the first wearer of the climbers' green jersey. After that, focus will switch to the bunch sprint, where the bonus seconds on offer could see a sprinter move into pink.
Early on, a bunch of 13 riders tried to escape the peloton, including Konig, but the peloton were never going to let that many riders get away and it was over before long.
Eventually, a group of eight riders did get away from the bunch. This group contained Guarnieri (Astana), Urtasun (Euskaltel), Konovalovas (Movistar) and Reynes (Lotto). They got a maximum gap of eight minutes on the peloton.
As you would expect, Garmin and Lampre were doing the chasing along with Katusha. Strangely, though, second placed Danielson was taking turns as well as Scarponi.
The "huge mountain" that the riders had to climb halfway through, which resembled a speed bump by Giro standards, was won by Longo Borghini of Liquigas. He will be wearing the green jersey tomorrow.
And with 10km to go, the final rider, again Longo Borghini, was caught and the peloton prepared for the sprint. The pace was mainly being set by Katusha, who clearly felt good about Galimzyanov's chances.
But the Russian's inexperience cost him as he led the sprint out way too early with Farrar, Petacchi, Ventoso and Renshaw on his wheel. Unfortunately, Bole and Bozic were too far back in the train and were out of it today.
After being in the perfect position on Farrar's wheel, it was no surprise that Petacchi took the victory today. He came round the American and blitzed the field to win by a mile. Farrar and Ventoso completed the podium, whilst Bole came 14th ahead of Bozic. A very disappointing day for us.

Team Summary
We will have a few days like this, you feel. We missed the key attack early on so missed the BotD. Then in the sprint, we just couldn't get Bozic near the front and he had to expend a lot of energy to get on the train so he had nothing for a sprint. We'll try something different tomorrow. It's two wins out of two for Lampre now.
I'll try my best but there's a team time trial soon, where it could all go horribly wrong, plus the bonus seconds in the Giro will make a big difference to the standings.
