@ tsmoha: I really hope Cunego can keep up like that. He has a first peak for T-A and then continues on a high level till the Ardennes. Maybe that's too much, we'll see.
@ laidbackmarc: Yep, Oss should develop well. And also, there is a certain Pozzato without contract for next season...
I'm back at home in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, now. I still have some small training sessions in March, then, in April, a complete phase of rest until I slowly start building up my shape again in May.
But what I wanted to tell you: As a result of my good performances and the intense training in the first two months of the year, I feel I got stronger than ever. I improved on every terrain and come closer and closer to the top level I eventually want to reach.
I will continue to write here from time to time and keep updating the race reports section.
congrats on the newly progress - you could become a serious contender for the overall in slovenia if you keep training hard nice to see that you are also improving in hilly terrain which was a problem sometimes
@FreitasPCM: Don't worry He'll be very disciplined.
@johannes-w: Thanks. In Slovenia, the Top 10 from last year won't be enough this time, you're right I will depend on the starting field though. And yes, the improvement on hills can become very important!
Damiano Cunego and Jérémie Galland (Saur) are the only ones with more than one overall win this month. The most surprising win was probably Ricardo Vilela's success at the Volta ao Algarve.
World Tour Ranking
No changes due to no World Tour races.
CQ Ranking
Damiano Cunego is the outstanding rider so far, having almost as much points as second and third, Pellizotti and Hivert, figured up. Liquigas also increased their lead in the team ranking but that might change in the next months when the really big points are being distributed. Movistar had a nice month, mostly due to Rojas, and both advance a lot in the respective rankings. Youngster Dominik Nerz will lose his strong place in the upcoming months.
Saur is really on fire in the early season and starts to build a nice buffer in the race for promotion, although it's way too early to see any decision.
Victory Ranking
José Joaquin Rojas was impressive with seven wins only in this month but Damiano Cunego still leads, as well as his team in the team ranking. Saur and Movistar also with nice amounts of wins, the Spanish team has already almost as much wins as last year (14).
Monthly Awards
Not surprisingly, Rojas wins the award with six stage wins in the deserts of Oman and Qatar plus the overall in the latter. Brambilla is honoured for his second spot in stage four of the Giro di Sardegna.

The month March sees us tackling our first sponsor goals. Especially the races on home soil, Tirreno – Adriatico and Milano – San Remo, are important to our sponsors. In general, the World Tour ranking will be properly shaked up.
Firstly held in 1974, the Giro del Friuli is one of the lesser known Italian one day classics. It covers the Friuli province in the north east of Italy, close to the Slovenian frontier. Record winner is Guido Bontempi who won the race three times in the 80s, more recent winners are the likes of Franco Pellizotti or Mirko Lorenzetto.
The first half of the 187 kms long parcours is completely flat. The second half is a hilly criterium in the province capital Gorizia. A puncheur should win this.
With both Roman Kreuziger and Damiano Cunego, Liquigas provides two victory candidates. Only Katusha's Leonardo Bertagnolli should be able to challenge them.
Team Liquigas
The sponsor gave us a clear goal: Winning this race. And therefore, we brought a strong team with Kreuziger and Cunego as dual leaders, both using this for preparation for Paris – Nice and Tirreno – Adriatico, respectively. To be sure, we might also send someone into the break.
Report
Due to strong winds and a nervous peloton, it took long until a breakaway finally established itself. It consists of six riders including Tiziano Dall'Antonia and Branislav Samoilau (ISD CT). After a while, Maurizio Biondo (Acqua), Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) and Francesco Failli (Farnese Vini) jumped to the front which caused Liquigas to enforce the pace in the pack.
Climbing the third to last ascent, only Dall'Antonia and the three mentioned above are left in front, three minutes in front of the pack in which Liquigas is still doing the pace. They don't seem to have much trust in Dall'Antonia, who is the not the best puncheur in the group.
Along with Katusha, Liquigas brings the group back on the second to last climb. The front group is now only 33 riders large. Nothing else happened until the last 10 kms when Leonardo Bertagnolli attacks. But Roman Kreuziger digs deep and reels him back in. Only Leonardo Pietropolli (Lampre) and Cunego can follow. The latter attacks on the very top of the climb and gets away.
The Liquigas captain takes his next win and fulfills the sponsor goal. On the decent, a couple of riders caught up with the second group but Bertagnolli holds on to the second place in front of Oscar Gatto (Farnese Vini). Kreuziger finishes seventh after some hard work on the last climb.
Damiano Cunego continues his winning streak in Italy.

The Winner
Not quite the world championships but still: Another strong performance by Damiano Cunego. He is in great shape and will be one of the top favorites for Tirreno – Adriatico.
Liquigas Resumé
Mission accomplished. Credits to both Damiano and Roman. Without the latter, the win wouldn't have been possible, or at least less probable. His strong efforts to reel Bertagnolli back in have decided the race. A good teamwork.
@ laidbackmarc: Well it wasn't that easy. Without Kreuziger, Bertagnolli would have gotten away and I don't know if Cunego could have followed. But yeah, I think he has good chances for T-A. MSR is another thing, I was never good at that race, and last year, Mauro Finetto disappointed pretty badly. We'll see...
@ tsmoha: Yep, Kreuziger was very important there. A nice luxury domestique
The Vuelta a Murcia started 1981 with a famous winner: Pedro Delgado. Counted among the further winners are the likes of Miguel Indurain, Denis Menchov and record winner Alejandro Valverdo, who took the overall three times.
With a rather but not completely flat, one hilly stage and a time trial, the Vuelta appeals to all kinds of riders and the weak starting field of last year was a passing fed. This year, some big names attend. As the two road stages don't allow large time gaps, the winner should have decent time trialing skills.

Last year's weak starting field was a single event. With Alberto Contador, world's best stage racer takes part in this race. Some other strong time trialists are here as well as Damiano Cunego, who convinced with strong performances recently. In contrary to him, most favorites including Contador start their season here.
Team Liquigas
Damiano Cunego aims for the win but he would have to make up a lot of time in front of the time trial. An advantage should be that Contador, the main rival, starts the season while our Italian is already in great shape.
Simone Ponzi and Mauro Finetto have a good shot at the first stage, in case it ends in a mass sprint.
Report
A six men break including Alan Marangoni and Nokia's Matteo Tossato dominates the live coverage of today. The latter takes most points over the mountains and leads that ranking. They are caught on the last ascent and while a crash confuses the pack, Farnese Vini's Oscar Gatto breaks free.
By the time the pack takes notice, the Italian is already long gone. Damiano Cunego and Freddy Montana (Colombia) try to catch up with him but it's too late. Gatto wins the stage! Cunego and Montana stay in front of the pack but don't get a time gap, Finetto wins the sprint for place 4.
With a perfectly timed attack, Gatto tricks the sprinters.

The break today is quite large, 12 men including Paolo Longo Borghini. They're caught on the last climb and make no further impact on the race. Four kilometers from the top, Damiano Cunego sets a strong attack and splits the pack. He crosses the summit with 45 seconds to a trio consisting of Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel), Ruben Plaza and David Arroyo (both Movistar). No signs of Contador or Peraud.
And Cunego doesn't only stay in the lead, he extends it to 55 seconds and takes the overall lead. Arroyo outsprints Nieve and his team mate Plaza for place two while Alexander Efimkin (Type 1) leads the pack into the finish 1'31 behind Cunego. Contador is in this pack, he obviously isn't in shape yet. Peraud loses even more than five minutes.
Cunego is now in a great position to win the overall. Plaza 1'23 behind him, Contador 1'59. In 12 kilometers of time trial, that shouldn't be doable for them.
Who shall stop this guy?

One of the top favorites for today, Bert Grabsch (T-Mobile), starts very early and sets the best time for a while. Jean-Christophe Peraud can't match the German and is six seconds slower. The top favorite for today, and originally for the overall as well, is Alberto Contador. For the moment, he underlines the ambitions, crushing Grabsch's time by 17 seconds. He should make a big leap in the overall.
But eventually, three riders are faster than El Pistolero: The stage winner is a complete surprise. Caja Rural's Oleg Chuzda sets today's fastest time, six seconds faster than Contador. Maurizio Biondo (Acqua&Sapone) and Ruben Plaza (Movistar), who move up to sixth and second overall respectively, complete the podium. Damiano Cunego finishes 18th, 35 seconds down, but keeps his overall.
A surprising winner: Oleg Chuzda with his second season victory.

The Winner
Damiano Cunego has every right to be happy: In Murcia, he scores his eleventh season win – and it's only early March! It seems like the team change did him very well. With those performances, he is one of the top favorites for the upcoming Tirreno – Adriatico.
Liquigas Resumé
A stage win, a third place and the overall – another great race for us! Edited by cunego59 on 18-10-2011 15:50
Great win again, but i will keep you telling to switch to extreme with very another win now
Btw. Will not Cunego be tired soon?He is racing a lot and he will need to be fit in April certainly.
