IF you do them in the first week, with an uphill finish then why not?
Something like the stage Kirchen took yellow in 2008 worked well.

This year they have a couple of uphill finishes like that one. The problem with them is that they already have a winner, so I don't think the peloton should even bother to ride them. |

They don't work because the race is already folded when those stages take place, or because G.C. favourites won't dare trying a move before the first mountain finish, where the race is decided once and for good.
With a better overall route balance, and less obvious über-favourites riders, those stages might work. |

Vuelta a España organisers have announced the four teams that will be awarded wildcard invitations to the race. Geox-TMC, Skil-Shimano, Cofidis and Andalucia Caja Granada will join the 18 pre-selected WorldTour teams in the race, which begins in Benidorm on August 20.

Caja Rural should have been there instead of Andalucia. |

Agreed. Or instead of Skil.

Caja Rural is on a reserve list. If any of the teams decide not to take part, Rural will take its place. |

1-2 weeks ago it was already announced somewhere else. They had the same discussion there.
Skil was invited because they had no wild card for the Tour. So the ASO promised then one for the Vuelta early in the season.
Cofidis was necessary as they had the KoM ranking in the previous years with Moncoutie. Geox was for sure.
And it doesn`t really matter if Andalucia or Caja Rural, both of them would be quite offensive. |

No Caja Rural, but Skil? Meh, I was looking forward to see them racing with Inigo Cuesta and Javier Moreno. Actually, Caja Rural has done better results this year than Andalucia... But having Skil is also nice. |

So Skil got invited? Surprising. FDJ or Caja Rural would've made more sense. Not that I'm complaining. I'd like to see how Geniez and Kittel will do in a GT. |

All those people doubting Skil, I guarantee you, they will liven up atleast a few stages for you. Dont forget they also have Van Hummel who might actually be able to do something at the Vuelta too.

Andalucia always is very aggresive at the Vuelta.
Caja Rural is doing a great season, also they have riders and academies all over Spain, but I think there is too much preasure from ASO to put Skil into a GT. "We dont want to take a french team out of TdF so we are giving you a second chance, and we leave out of guilty"
Hope that Caja Rural could enter the Vuelta, and see the first Uruguayan in a GT with Fabricio Ferrari.
Added: I just read Caja Rural's blog (https://equipociclistacajarural.blogspot.com/2011/05/vuelta-espana.html). They are very disappointed with the decision. They think this is a bad move for the spanish cyclism, because Caja Rural is a team with 17 spanish riders and have been running nonstop since 1992.
They encourage the sponsors and fans to keep supporting the team.
They have achieved 17 victories this season.

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Contador's hearing will take place at the beginning of August

If ASO is that much in love with Skil they should have included them in the Tour. I'd rather invite Caja Rural and Colombia es Pasión or even FDJ than Skil and AndalucÃa, although the latter is pretty much mandatory since the Andalucian government is always willing to pay to host a handful of stages. But they're still crap. |

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet (hope not) but the 6 stages of this year's Eneco Tour have been announced.
Prologue - 8 August : Amersfoort ITT, 5.70 km
Stage: 1 - 9 August : Oosterhout - Sint Willebrord, 192.10 km
Stage: 2 - 10 August : Aalter - Ardooie (Bel), 169.10 km
Stage: 3 - 11 August : Heers (Bel) - Andenne (Bel), 184.00 km
Stage: 4 - 12 August : Roermond ITT, 14.70 km
Stage: 5 - 13 August : Genk (Bel), 187.00 km
Stage: 6 - 14 August : Sittard-Geleen, 201.20 km
Translated Press Communiqué about the Route:
"In 2011 the Eneco Tour has acquired an even better place on the WorldTour calender. During the Eneco Tour no other WorldTour events are being organised and in the new planning, riders will have a full week of rest between the end of the Eneco Tour and the start of the Vuelta."
"Because of a change of dates we will start on a Monday and the parcours has been set up for a final on Sunday. De various stages are, evenly divided, again situated in the Netherlands and Belgium. After the prologue and two flat stages, the Eneco Tour will go through the Ardennes and Dutch Limburg for some exciting stages. This build-up means that the Eneco Tour can remain thrilling until the end and that every type of rider (sprinter, time-trialler or GC-rider) has a few days to their pleasing.

This is a good idea:
https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/rider...mpionships
The question is, will they have the guts to actually do it?

I wonder if they'll have 60 riders starting.
More seriously I'm wondering whether it is legal or not. I can remember TDF not being able to prevent Virenque from riding in 1999, a.o. |

UCI spokesman Enrico Carpani confirmed that the governing body's and WADA's rules called for a sanctioned rider to lose all race results gained since the date of a test.
"We will ask for disqualification of all the results since the day of the (doping) control," Carpani told The Associated Press by telephone. "However, the UCI is open to any decision taken by the CAS and will accept it without any problem."

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that. But well, I guess it's possible otherwise they wouldn't even bother, would they?
Anyway, it would be great if they do it, and I'd like other countries to follow up their example. And it'd be even better if they extended that to the Olympics and the Worlds. |
