Great Banana

Tuco the Ugly
@ all: Thanks for the bananas!

I didn't even realize AG2R had so many top 10 riders until I opened up the exported results. A little weird.

Tour de l'Ain: Stage 5: Culoz - Belley: 121.3km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/593.jpg

The final day of the Tour de l'Ain sees the peloton tackle the Col du Grand Colombier. The imposing climb will be the feature of the day. However, it crests with 35km still to go on the day. This probably means it is too far out for any really decisive move.

A large group of riders got away in the early kilometers of the day. No Saur rider attempted to make the move, as the team wanted leader Jérôme Coppel to have ample protection for the climb.

Up until the Col du Grand Colombier. The breakaway arrived with a lead of 4'57" over the main field.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/594.jpg
The break begins to climb the Col du Grand Colombier.

On the climb, the peloton began to claw back seconds from the breakaway, which didn't contain many strong climbers.

Saur - Sojasun had its riders take some turns at the front, hoping to keep the pace high and tire out riders.

The peloton had been whittled down to 45 riders when Guillaume Levarlet and Jérémie Galland pulled off the front. This signaled Coppel to accelerate.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/595.jpg
Coppel goes on the attack.

5km from the top, no rider tried to follow the Frenchman. Coppel, for one of the first times this season, showed his strength, roared up the mountainside.

A little over a kilometer from the top, he caught up with the leading group of riders on the road, as the break had splintered.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/596.jpg
Coppel connects with the remnants of the breakaway, leading them forward.

Coppel immediately took to the front of the group, hoping to lead them over the top with him. Hopefully, with their aid, he could stay away on the descent and the run-in to the line.

Back in the peloton, the only rider to react was John Gadret.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/597.jpg
Coppel is the first to summit the Col du Grand Colombier.

Coppel went over the top with 6 riders from the breakaway and Gadret only a handful of seconds behind. The peloton was 1'26" behind.

Gadret would catch up with the leading group, and he quickly went to work with Coppel, hoping to descent quickly.

The two worked well, but saw their advantage diminish a bit on the descent. With 20km left, the group had a 45" lead.

It would not be enough to make it the line. The peloton would swallow them up with 10km left on the day. A good move by Coppel, but there was simply too much distance between the climb and finish.

The day would be decided by a bunch sprint from the medium-sized group. It appeared Thibaut Pinot had taken the win, but the prize was awarded to John Gadret. With the bonus seconds of finishing in first, Gadret would take the overall win as well.

Coppel finished in 18th for the day and in the GC. He was probably the 2nd strongest rider today, behind Gadret, a promising sign.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/598.jpg
In a fishy decision, Gadret takes the win over Pinot.

*Crashed before I could export results, so its abbreviated.*

Pity that you didn`t make it solo or together with Gadret.
But still a good ride that gives hope for the next races.

Thanks. I probably should've tried to attack earlier on the climb.

Stages like this one i.e. one climb far from the finish, are not good on PCM10.

Good result, and good tour so far, hopefully you will take another win again soon in next races Smile

Tour du Limousin

The Tour du Limousin will be last stage race for the team in 2010. Overall, the team has not has not really performed at the level hoped so far in such races, but the Tour du Limousin offers 4 more chances for victory. Seeing as the first three stages are relatively flat, the team will be focused around Jimmy Casper, in hopes he can find some early season form and bring home some wins.

Stage 1: Oradour sur Glane - La Souterraine: 199.8km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/599.jpg

The first stage of the Tour du Limousin should be fairly straightforward. There is a chance some small, late climbs, could derail a mass sprint. Some of the weaker climbing sprinters, like Casper, could falter.

Knowing there was a chance of such a possibility, Saur - Sojasun wanted to be protected, so they sent a rider into the break. After being unsuccessful several days ago in the Tour de l'Ain, Jean-Marc Marino got away from the peloton.

He was part of the group of 12 riders. Himself, Jean-Luc Delpech (Bretagne - Schuller), Bjorn De Decker (Jong Vlaanderen - Bauknecht), Renaud Dion (Roubaix Lille Métropole), Robert Patridge (Endura Racing), Niels Brouzes (Big Mat - Auber 93), Gustavo Domínguez (Xacebo - Galicia), Alexander Mironov (Itera - Katusha), Robert Retschke (Continental Team Differdange), Arnaud Gérard (Française des Jeux), Ronan Van Zandbeek (Van Vliet EBH Elshof), and Francesco Tomei (ISD - Neri).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/600.jpg
The breakaway.

The break had a nice lead at the first sprint point in Le Blanc. They wre 8'15" ahead with 105km left on the day.

At the second sprint point in Le Dorat, their lead had shrunk, but only to 5'29". With 56km to go, and more challenging terrain in the closing sections, the break could be clear.

The peloton could sense this possibility, and began to chase. The speed and the climbing wore on Casper and his helpers. He was able to stay with the main group, but it was clear early, even if the peloton caught the break, he would not figure in the finish.

As the break went under the 20km to go banner, the gap was 3'02".

Sensing victory, Tomei and Van Zandbeek took off.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/601.jpg
Tomei and Van Zandbeek ruin the continuity of the break by seeking individual glory.

While two riders leaving the break hurt, the remaining 10 riders stayed focused and calm. Within 6 kilometers, they had pulled back the two.

Even better news came, when the breakaway reached the outskirts of La Soutteraine with a lead of still 2'01". Now that victory was assured, attacks were okay.

None came for a while.

Then, Marino took off with 5km to go.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/602.jpg
Marino digs for the win.

He would enter the city streets of La Soutteraine just ahead of his breakaway companions. With the flamme rouge approaching, he only had to hold on for a bit longer.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/603.jpg
Marino with the slimmest of margins.

But it was not to be. When the sprinting started behind him, he did not have the speed nor the energy to hold out for the win. The German Robert Retschke would take the win just ahead of Delpech and Dion.

Marino would cross the ride in 10th. Another valiant try from a Saur rider falling a bit short.

Behind the break, the peloton would cross the line 41" later.

Tour du Limousin: Stage 2: La Soutteraine - Magnac Bourg: 198.4km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/605.jpg

After yesterday's near miss, today's stage to Magnac Bourg should be right up Jimmy Casper's alley. It is pan flat.

A break of 4 riders got away from the peloton. However, the peloton would not make the same mistake. Saur - Sojasun helped a bit in the chase, which was rather leisurely.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/606.jpg
A small break.

The breakaway would easily be arrested 9.3km from the line.

Tired from his efforts yesterday, Jean-Marc Marino would unfortunately be dropped. He would finish the day in 151st, dead last...

Up the road from an exhausted Marino, Saur - Sojasun started to prepare a sprint train for Casper. It would not be his accustomed one, but he had Rony Martias and Romain Matheou escorting him.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/607.jpg
Casper gets into position with the sprint.

The strength of the train was underwhelming, leaving Casper to do some work of his own as the sprint opened up. Luckily, he was able to get onto the wheel of Japanese sprinter Yukiya Arashiro.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/608.jpg
Casper still in good position as the sprint opens.

Casper moved from Arashiro's slipstream and found himself in front. He seemed to be closing in on his first win since Luxembourg in June.

However, his top end speed seemed to be gone. Perhaps he was too tired from vigorous training.

Either way, there was no way he could hold off Lloyd Mondory, who looked much fresher in the final meters. The AG2R rider would power away from the rest to take the win.

Casper would finish in 2nd. A good result, but not a very good ride.

Indeed a nice 2nd, and he is in the Top10 overall now Smile

roturn

@ all: Thanks. Top 10s are nice, but the sponsors aren't very happy with me Frown

Tour du Limousin: Stage 3: St. Yrieix la Perche: 157.2km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/610.jpg

Attacking riders seemed few and far between on today's stage. A few half-hearted attempts to form a break were easily controlled by the peloton.

It wouldn't be until the Côte de Bonnieux, nearly 80km into the stage before a rider got away.

Today, it would be Mikaël Chérel's day in front of the cameras, as he was the only rider to stay clear.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/611.jpg
Chérel gains some good exposure for his FDJ team.

Tactically, the move was always destined to fail. Chérel would be brought back into the fold over 20km from the line.

The run-in was pretty flat, and the peloton moved quickly to dissuade any late attacks.

Romain Matheou and Rony Martias did their best to position Jimmy Casper in the sprint, but once again, were not quite up the job.

Nevertheless, as the sprint opened, Casper found himself in the second row, on Paride Grillo's wheel.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/612.jpg
Casper is positioned well for the finish.

However, Casper's sprint would be highly disappointing. He could never manage to pass Grillo, a sprinter he has beat numerous times, and appeared to be stuck in mud. Casper would finish in 8th.

The winner, would again be Lloyd Mondory. Without Casper at his best, he had no competition again.

More boxing from Mondory...

Tour du Limousin: Stage 4: Treignac - Limoges: 208.3km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/614.jpg

The final stage of the Tour du Limousin is hilly, however, not terribly difficult. There will likely not be any huge gaps, so a strong finish will be needed to take the win today.

10 riders formed a break shortly after the departure from the start line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/615.jpg
The breakaway.

The peloton let them have their time in front of the television, but in the second half of the race, started to ride.

At the 4th KOM point, 80km from the line. The breakaway had a lead of 5'25" over the main field.

At this same KOM point, two breakaway riders rode everyone else off their wheels. They were Rodrigo García (Xacebo - Galicia) and Andrey Solomennikov (Itera - Katusha).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/616.jpg
García and Solomennikov move on ahead.

The two riders continued on together, working to try to stay away from the chasing peloton.

The chase was rather haphazard, with no one team dominating the duties. Even still, they never looked like giving the day to breakaway.

The chase.

Up ahead, García and Solomennikov were just finishing the final major climb of the day. On this climb, García was able to drop his companion of some 160 odd kilometers.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/618.jpg
García drops Solomennikov.

Some small attacks occurred behind the leading riders on the same climb. Nothing decisive. The contenders were likely just feeling each other out. Guillaume Levarlet was feeling good for Saur - Sojasun, but did not waste energy at this point.

The final 20km were rather flat, save for the last short, steep climb into Limoges.

During this run-in, three riders attacked from the peloton. They were David García Dapena (Xacebo - Galicia), Giovanni Visconti (ISD - Neri), and José Iván Gutiérrez (Caisse d'Epargne).

Their attacks brought back all the breakaway riders. Including Rodrigo García, David García Dapena's teammate...

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/619.jpg
García Dapena, Visconti, and López attack.

However, on level terrain, such attacks were futile. They would never have the strength to stay away from the peloton.

The stage would come down to the final climb.

Here, García Dapena attacked again. This time, Levarlet followed.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/620.jpg
García Dapena looks back to see Levarlet reacting to his attack.

Levarlet, who had not wasted energy with fruitless attacks, was clearly the freshest rider. He powered past García Dapena and created a gap between himself and all other riders.

He entered the streets of Limoges with a winning lead.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/621.jpg
Levarlet has a good sized gap as he enters the narrow streets of Limoges.

Levarlet would be able to relax down the final straight, easily taking the win ahead of the field. His perfectly timed attack could not be matched.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/622.jpg
Levarlet raises his arms in victory!

Just here to say I hope you keep going with this story when the 2011 db comes out, instead of ditching this one and starting fresh with the 2011 db.

It would have been nice to see Levarlet boxing today but I'll let it slide this time. Cool

I won't be ditching this story for 2011 db. I've actually finished the season I'm going to catch up on reporting before moving to the next season.

As for the boxing, I can never keep straight which celebration key does what...so, take what you can get
