UCI President Pat McQuaid told the Associated Press that Landis' allegations were "scandalous and mischievous."

"These guys coming out now with things like this from the past is only damaging the sport. If they've any love for the sport they wouldn't do it," he said.

Yep - McQuaid is most certainly pro Lance. And doesn't care if he doped. Because he's Lance.

This is exactly why, despite being a huge fan of the sport, I don't have favorite teams and individuals. It's impossible to really get behind someone, when it's extremely likely they'll just let you down.

And I don't believe for a second that the sport is getting cleaner, especially with McQuaid and that attitude.

McQuaid is one of the biggest mistakes in the world of cycling

fuck the news.

I hate what cycling is fast becoming.
The eyes of the world should be on the field of play, not the political BS that will inevitably become of this.
We have a corrupt governing body, i've said this for a very long time.
We should have life bans, I've said this for a long time.

Zero tolerance is whats needed, and guess what - you ain't getting it.

WADA's the problem there Wink

This is a response you'd normally expect from a governing body.

"WADA is aware of the serious allegations made by Mr. Landis. We are very interested in learning more about this matter and we will liaise with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and any other authorities with appropriate jurisdiction to get to the heart of the issues raised. WADA looks forward to these further investigations and enquiries by those responsible.

"Generally speaking, WADA encourages everyone with knowledge of banned practices in sport, including athletes who were caught cheating and who denied the evidence for years, to be forthcoming in disclosing the information they may have to the proper authorities. This will further contribute to clean sport and strengthen existing anti-doping programs for the good of clean athletes worldwide."

Now, compare it to UCI's statement:
"The UCI regrets that Mr. Landis has publicly accused individuals without allowing sufficient time for the relevant US authorities to investigate.

"An impartial investigation is a fundamental right, as Mr. Landis will understand having contested, for two years, the evidence of his breach of the Anti-Doping Rules in 2006.

"The UCI will leave it to the individuals accused by Mr. Landis to take the position they see fit with regards to this issue."

Absolutely absurd.

I'm actually jumping on the bandwagon for giving Track Cycling a new governing body.

I must say, it was amusing to see this on the front page of just about every American sports site, as well as being discussed on every sports radio show which pretty much won't don't even acknowledge cycling exists much less ever talk about it.

I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been a slew of lawsuits filed yet though. I suspect fear of lawsuits is why cyclingnews didn't want to be the first to break the story.

They're for money. Which means against doping, except for Lance because he generates so much money

What I'm really surprised about is the choice of ESPN and the Wall Street Journal to break it. ESPN makes sense, WSJ not so much.

My guess is that he was looking to try and create credibility. ESPN was going to run the story no matter what, but they'll run pretty much anything remotely sports related, true or not anymore. For it to run in the WSJ, a more respectable paper to non sports people, it seems to give the story more validity.

Both organizations are also big enough to not be afraid of the lawsuits which will inevitably follow. Cyclingnews appeared to have been notified at the same time, they had a "coming soon" type article up last night when i posted the WSJ one, but were waiting to "verify the validity" which I'm quite certain meant afraid to be sued. I'm sure that if a certain person where to pull some strings, they could get half of the ad revenue on cyclingnews pulled and fairly easily take them under.
