Willy: Time for payback! I'll try to seize the leader's jersey today.

The Race

Willy Wouters

Great weather here in Utah!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah502_zpsada89f33.jpg

Stetina was our scout of the day and attacked with 50 km left to go!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah503_zpse13f2cd1.jpg

He had a lot of energy left so I attacked out of the bunch at 30 km left to go, he was waiting for me!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah504_zpsb1a64b2c.jpg

For about 8 km, he gave 100% and helped me a long way. I took a minute on Machado.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah505_zpseb9dbad2.jpg

I held out pretty well, but then the fireworks started in the peloton. With only 5 km left to go, I got caught...

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah506_zpsde926c4a.jpg

One man broke free and I barely managed to follow him. Guess who...?

Aftermath

I just don't get it. Last year I fought with the strongest GT contenders in the world and won quite some battles. This year I get stuck on Machado and Uran. No offense, but it's like a step down, they are not the same level as Contador, Schleck and Nibali.

Machado 2 - 0 Wouters

See you at the final stage, tomorrow,
Willy

And we have also found a nemesis for Willy now Wink
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

sutty68 - And it gets worse... Frown

Ollfardh - Very true. The Giro was a nice experience, but brought two incredible rivals for Stijn and Willy.

Tour of Utah - Stage 6

Hi, it's Stijn today. Willy was not able to make the report today, so I'll do it for him. From my room in Mallorca I followed the race carefully. Tomorrow I can finally catch a flight home, so I'll be in time for the Dutch Valley Classic. Back to Utah.

Preview

Stijn: This was the final stage, Willy's final chance. He had a battle plan.

The Race

Stijn Van Gent

From more than 50 km from the finish, Willy sneaked off. A daring tactic, but it's been proven efficient many times by him.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah602_zps00fbde46.jpg

Machado's team cracked and he was left alone to bring back Willy!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah603_zps43dc98c3.jpg

Things were looking up for Willy this time!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah604_zps3b226b51.jpg

The coverage could've been better, we had a long shot of some American rider hitting the road. When the camera returned to Willy minutes later, I was absolutely shocked. One man had joined him... Machado.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah605_zps54a2271c.jpg

And then he took a meter, two meters... Shit.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah606_zpsa717a8bb.jpg

And then Willy completely cracked, he broke down completely, I've never seen anything like it.

Of course, Machado won the stage.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/utah607_zpsc68b1425.jpg

On 5 km, Willy lost 15 minutes, and finished 21th. It was unbelievable to witness, the commentators were going crazy over it, Willy's really popular in America. He was just looking at his front wheel and going so slow, he was completely empty and half-dead.

Aftermath

I'm not really sure what happened, since I haven't been able to reach Willy yet. I'll try to reach him again when I'm back in Belgium. I hope he'll get over it soon and start again in the Tour of Colorado, but I've never seen him like this. It sucks I'm not there right now.

Bad luck for Willy. Hope he recovers soon

NOOOOOO WILLY SadSadSadSadSadSadSadSad

Ian Butler
PCM rulezz - Maybe that would be best. Starting at Colorado is not certain yet. But on the other hand, maybe he could use it to kick back.

Jakstar22 - Hope so, too, thanks Wink

Daggen - I see how it could be misleading, I'll try to change it Pfft

Some massive time gaps in Utah, no doubt cynics will be questioning Machado's performance?!?Frown

Nooo !!, Machado is just rubbing willy's nose in it Sad

Ian Butler
The Rider - A lot of people will doubt Machado's performance. We'll see what comes of it!

sutty68 - It's bad at the moment. Let's hope Willy bounces back stronger!

Stijn: After a third place last year, I have my eye on the win again this season. If I win, I become (shared) record holder with 2 wins, alongside Wiebren Veenstra and Steven De Jongh, both from the Netherlands.

The Race

Stijn Van Gent

Two of our boys went to war today!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/dvc02_zps00dd2eb5.jpg

Two more joined the break, but left most of the work up to us, of course.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/dvc03_zpsec84a5d2.jpg

Two hours after leaving Veenendaal, we were already back, for a few local rounds.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/dvc04_zps37e4e3a8.jpg

I was feeling great, so Markus (2nd last year) decided to lead me out today. It was a first but I had all confidence he would be a great lead-out.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/dvc05_zpsfb75f6ff.jpg

He fulfilled all expectations! What a strong lead-out sprint that was!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/dvc06_zps60acfa21.jpg

The sprint was awfully exciting. A couple of guys kept the same line for quite some time. Nobody wanted to crack.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/dvc07_zps3c5ee1fe.jpg

In the end, nobody cracked, but I developed a strong final jump! Yes!

Aftermath

This is great! Despite returning in Garmin and not the Dutch team Argos, the people here really welcomed me with open arms! With 2 wins I'm now a shared record holder, which is also a great feeling. It may not be the biggest race, but I always love coming here. I guess you could say I'm partly a (Falls)-Classic man. I usually do quite well in these late classics and one day races. In a few days there's Hamburg Classic, where I finished 2nd last year. Hope to get my first win there now!

Oh, and then there was this! As part of the ceremony, a local kid from Veenendaal was on the podium, for an autograph, so great!

Willy Wouters

Also this, in the mean time, I've been in contact with Willy. He asked me to tell you all he'll definitely start in Colorado. He's driving himself to the edge, training harder than ever. Either this defeat in Utah will make him a much stronger rider than before, or it'll break him. I vote for the first one!

I'll see you in Germany for the Hamburg Classic!

dienblad - What? We've been tricked, then! Track down that kid and turn him into the cops, he lives somewhere in Veenendaal. Unless... that's just what he said, but maybe he's a professional conman. Angry

Stijn: Last year I came close to the victory. I haven't been able to celebrate here so far, maybe this year. I intend to make the race a bit harder to eliminate pure sprinters.

The Race

Stijn Van Gent

Well, there were others who made the race harder than even I intended. I spend half the day chasing attackers, real tough day.

Crossing the finish line with 15 km left to go (loops), we had a 14-man peloton/break. I was isolated but also the favorites. When someone attacked, I had to close the gap.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/ham03_zpsa0ed573c.jpg

And attacks came! Hoogerland, Devolder, Cancellara... They all tried.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/ham04_zps72aab872.jpg

Nearing the finish, I felt empty. I had spend way too much time chasing. I knew it and everyone else knew it. I started the sprint from far, trying to surprise them.

But three riders were not to be taken by surprise. Tough luck. Fourth.

Aftermath

Despite the result, I'm very proud of my race today. I did an awful lot of work and kept everything under control, it was a good day. If others want to wheelsuck to the win, that's their choice and they did a great job, but I got a lot of work done so I'm proud of that!

Can't wait to see Willy tomorrow, he's starting in the Tour of Colorado. Live feed guaranteed! I think he'll report from there, though.
See you later,
Stijn
