Giro d'Italia

Stage 8: Tivoli – Blockhaus
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-1_zps515383d8.jpg
The profile pretty much speaks for itself. This will be a very hard finish!

A lot of pretty much worthless climbers attack and we couldn’t care less…

In the middle of the stage six decent climbers far back in the peloton joined the front group and we decided to keep them within reach while letting them burn some energy.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-3_zps8a6013bc.jpg
With just 25 km of climbing left the break has 1’36’’ to the peloton.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-4_zpsb551b4b0.jpg
Denifl and Leipheimer tries to make it hard in the peloton, but Fuglsang is well protected. On the first part of the climb by Tonning and now by Bøchman. Kessiakoff is looking far below what we expect from him though!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-5_zps08433de3.jpg
With 13 km to go the break has almost been caught and Pozzovivo gives it a go.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-6_zps6f199f01.jpg
With Hesjedal pulling in the peloton we decides to play it cool.

A good choice it seems since the front is reunited with 8 km to the top.

Duarte attacks soon after, but he is too strong a climber for Fuglsang to chase up front.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-8_zps0a3ff02e.jpg
Antón and Chavez follows Duarte while Fuglsang continues the hard work in his group.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-9_zps6cc13e06.jpg
We expected Jakob to lose time to the strongest climbers today, but he did well to limit the damage.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-8-10_zpsf91d6185.jpg
He worked too hard to also win the sprint from his group, but a good day for him all-together gaining time on Cunego and Ulissi from the top 10.

Duarte will be wearing pink on tomorrows ITT.

Stage 9: Chieti – Piscara (ITT)
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-9-1_zpsa809ccdf.jpg
To put it short: Time to take back the pink!

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-9-2_zps66c3abfa.jpg
Cancellara will have put a mark on this stage in the race book.
And he doesn’t disappoint setting best time early on in 27’47’’
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-9-3_zps155a3779.jpg
But there’s not beating the World Champion for Spartacus today as Alex is 26 seconds faster in spite of having a mediocre day.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-9-4_zps381016df.jpg
Castroviejo is the main threat left for the stage at this point it seems.
But the Spaniard is 17 seconds slower than Alex.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-9-5_zps848f3e06.jpg
Fuglsang is looking sharp and determined today and even manages to beat Alex by 6 seconds, gaining a lot of valuable time.

Great time trials from Jakob and Alex Grin

But you will have to keep a close eye on the Colombians Wink

sutty: It was. Especially Jakob winning was surprising for me!
I believe that I can manage the Colombians, only Duarte should be a major problem in the long run.

I was wondering how good are all these young riders (stat-wise) in your DB, like Pinot, Henao (both of them do rather poor), Edmonson, Ulissi and so forth? Have you updated their potential over time? Fuglsang & Duarte obviously developed quite good.

Stats of all the WT-teams can be found here: https://pcmdaily.com/forum/viewthread....ost_797070

I have mainly edited a few riders, who turned out to be much bigger talents IRL than predicted by the DB (e.g. Kwiatkowski) and then a few declining ages of riders I see declining, but still had several years in them in the DB.
And in these I have only touched limits and not the actual stats, so they generally still have a lot of developing to do...

Can't remember if I touched anyones potential, but if I did it was back when the DB was released. Only minor things potentially though.

An interesting debate! Wink

In my Qatar Optics we are now in 2020, I have nether touched the stats of anyone.

HOWEVER, at the end of the season I am going to make huge changes. As I have found that many of the scouted riders are now 28-30 and A LARGE AMOUNT of them really start to decline at age 28 and a lot even choose to retire then. (Al Zaid in my story is a good example)

So I will have to randomise the 'decline age' of the generated riders between 28-42 (with the mean average age of retiring being around 34).

Also any chance of another Giro stage Atlantius! Cool

Atlantius
Actually I find the more varied declining ages very realistic compared to IRL. A lot of riders realize in their late 20's that their talent won't allow them to develop further and then they stop riding. Not a lot of riders keep riding as domestiques on CT-teams well into their 30's Wink

Hopefully you'll get a new stage today, but at the latest tomorrow. The stage coming up is a mostly flat stage with a very steep hill at the end making it very open-ended.

Giro d'Italia

Stage 10: Perugia – Montecatini Alto
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-1_zpseb207738.jpg
It has been marked as flat, but we will try to see what can happen with the final hills.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-2_zpsfe178d80.jpg
Plenty of riders want away, but we are having none of it today!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-3_zpse959e63d.jpg
Several teams are more than willing to assist us in our mission and with 23 km to go the break only has just over a minute.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-4_zps91952de6.jpg
The break and especially Sabatini proves much more resilient than we had hoped and with less than 5 km to go it looks like they might very well make it.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-5_zps8396fba8.jpg
Everyone but Jakob and Lasse are having a really bad day, so we don’t get Fuglsang placed just as well as we would have liked.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-6_zps62de3ed9.jpg
This shot pretty much proves why we didn’t consider this a sprinter stage in spite of the organizers classifying it as flat.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-10-7_zps614101f3.jpg
Fuglsang puts in a decent finish not losing time to any of his main rivals except a few seconds to Antón.

Stage 11: Pisa – Monte Serra
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-1_zps562e8768.jpg
Another real test for the riders even though it's not the biggest mountain in Italy. The goal will be to avoid losing too much time.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-2_zpsf490b1ca.jpg
We wouldn’t mind letting a break go away today but Movistar and Astana doesn’t agree.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-3_zpse5765a9a.jpg
It is well-known that Duarte doesn’t enjoy flat roads too much, but still it’s very surprising to see him crashing 50 km into the stage.

Smolen quickly gets him back in the peloton, but time will tell how hurt he is.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-4_zps27815dcb.jpg
The break makes full use of the confusion to expand the gap from 2 to 7 minutes at the top of the first climb.

Nissan and Cofidis cut the gap down to 4’30’’ with 50 km to go.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-5_zps4eb95b88.jpg
Leipheimer make the last effort to reel in the break with 9 km to go and all the favourites are ready for the final action.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-6_zps32ff572e.jpg
As usual Antón attacks early on the climb. Given his time deficit we remain calm for now.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-7_zpsa950c3fd.jpg
We won’t let Duarte and Pozzovivo slip away on the 5 km mark though!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-11-8_zpscfa9f7f8.jpg
Guess the crash wasn’t too hard on the Colombian as he slips in and out between slower riders blocking people from just sticking to his wheel.

Stage 12: Viareggio – Fanano
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-1_zps8c29c6e1.jpg
Probably the best of the mountain stages for Fuglsang. If he can keep with the others to the last summit he might be able to do some damage on the descent.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-2_zpsdb0ca005.jpg
Since Montaneri is the best placed rider more than 1h20’ behind and none the five have and real climbing talent we decided not to chase them very hard before the climbs.

At the foot of the first climb they have just over 10 minutes to the peloton.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-3_zps8b22d473.jpg
As soon as the incline began Tonning started upping the pace in the peloton a bit.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-4_zps7c068a24.jpg
Tobias and Lasse cut the gap to half it’s size while reducing the peloton to 61 riders.

Cunego crashed on the first part of the descent and lost contact with the main group.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-5_zps178d7513.jpg
His team mate Failli has no intentions of making it easy for his captain to come back and attacks along with a bunch of other secondary climbers 1 km from the top of the second climb.

We just tell Lasse and Tobias to keep doing what they do.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-7_zpseb005537.jpg
Antón and Duarte take over on the final climb and Jakob is quickly left alone fighting for his position as the earlier attackers fall through the group.

Duarte tries to get away just before the top but even the Colombian has limits.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-8_zps13e75975.jpg
With 9 km to go Fuglsang, Duarte, Antón and Pozzovivo has a small gap to the others.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-9_zps6c25060b.jpg
At the 5 km mark 10 more riders join from behind and Fuglsang puts in an attack.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-12-10_zps43e5591c.jpg
He managed to build just enough of a gap to hold on to take the stage in spite of the last km being uphill. And more importantly 20 bonus seconds along with it.

Cunego lost 2’32 and his GC hopes took a major hit.

Nice to see Fuglsang winning a stage after he lost time the day before.

Atlantius
