Has anyone got any ideas on how I can keep cycling fit during my injury layoff? I have Plica syndrome (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plica_syndrome) in both knees so have been told to avoid exercise likely to aggravate it, which means no cycling, running etc. Just wondering as I want to be able to get back on my bike as soon as possible, and I'm trying to avoid being horribly unfit. Smile

The best is definitely swimming. Even kicking while swimming shouldn't aggravate things to much. If kicking is an issue, just use one of those "pull buoys" - those floating things you clasp between your legs while swimming in order to use arms exclusively. Swimming is great for general fitness and excellent cardio workout.

Perhaps specific gym workouts can help. I'd focus on core workouts instead of weight training if I were you.

I'd be more worried about my health when I crash than my smarty phone.

As coincidence wants it, I nearly got hit by some ass in a range rover today who passed a truck in front of him and of course didn't see me on the other lane. I was shivering all the way home.

I have a small saddle bag which I put it in, along with a spare inner tube, allen key, and a snack. I don't think theres really any danger of something happenining to it in a crash, it is fairly secure.

I used to use this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0...&psc=1 to mount the phone on the bike. Took a bit of fiddling to get the phone set right so it didn't move too much in what is a waterproof holder but it worked fine for a few months and was even of quite solid construction.

It was a bit clunky but meant I could read Endomondo as I rode. However, I confess that the phone was a freebie so I wasn't overly protective of it.

I was involved in quite a spectacular crash about one year ago, I broke my helmet, got a head concussion, ripped my jacket and got bruises here and there, but my phone was perfectly fine in my back pocket as I fell on my back. Pfft

Seriously, you're not going to fall every 5 minutes (I crashed about once per season when I raced), and the probability that the fall is going to break your phone is like 10 %. Then you can always put it between your back and, say, a folded tube if you don't use a saddle bag but put it in your jersey or jacket.

@Admir I checked some of the segments close by to your town. I did so by using the "Explore" tab on the top navigation bar on the Strava sight. I then used the slider filter and saw that you've got quite a lot of Cat 1 and HC climbs not all that far from when you live. You've been blessed with some awesome roads it seemsWink

I've been trying to get out and ride a bit, but the roads have been flooded for the past 2 days, and it's still raining. Any suggestions to get around this issue? The roads are still passable by truck/elevated car, but bikes and small cars stand no chance in some of the "puddles" here. Frown

You don't understand; there's 4 inches of water just sitting in some places. Will a MTB hold up to that?

Yeah, my town is basically in a pit, surrounded by mountains on its every side, so I can choose many different routes actually. There are some long ones, with around 7-8% average slope and are long around 3-4 kilometers, but on another side of town, we do have some really steep ones, who are like 300m-400m long, but really steep.

Shame that I have no time for some longer cycling rides at the moment, as I'm into "second-shift" in my school, which starts at 2PM and finishes in 7PM, so there's really no time for cycling, except if I wake up in the morning (did that yesterday). I'll have a short Labour 4day long holiday from tomorrow to Monday, so I'll try to get at least one 50km+ ride then. Wink

Tour de Bretagne has been in town :

Looks like some tourists fiercely fought for that KOM some weeks or months ago and are now ranked among the pros.

Yeah, but the teasing with the other guy was to try to have the KOM before TdB would come to town. I tried the other day and was feeling great, but the front wind totally ruined my attempt (1:16 Sad ).

There's a dilemma about segments though. Should times be uploaded when there's a strong tailwind for example ? The pros, or racers during races, benefit from a huge dragging effect, which makes some KOM totally unreachable (not that they're not stronger than me, I'm talking in general terms here).

ianrussell
I say stick it all on there, it's just for fun. I love seeing what the pros times are in a race and I actually quite like that you can get lucky with the wind one day or some such - it means I can kid myself that I might get really, really lucky one day with a hurricane at my back Pfft

There are just so many ways to massage times, whether inadvertent e.g. wind or group rides or blatant cheating e.g. the use of digital EPO or simply sticking your Garmin on the passenger seat of a car!

Might as well just roll with it and enjoy I guess.

Good idea. I got a saddle bag too, so that might be something worth trying.

Anyway, got myself a new inner tube and finally figured out how to use that fancy pump - yes, I know this sounds stupid, but I really failed at this for the first 20 minutes until I checked out a YouTube video ... which I suppose wouldn't exist unless others have had the same problem as me Grin

Should make my debut tomorrow - will look into the Strava stuff.
