 Giro d'Italia
Stage 4: Corigliano Calabro – Grassano
Not the hardest stage, but this finish can’t be underestimated.
We decided early on that the only thing that matters for us at this stage is the GC. So Astana and Belisol decided that it was up to them to chase every movement in the peloton.
In the end a big break came away where Anza was the best placed rider 17’44’’ down in the GC. Perfect!
Halfway through the stage Cofidis and ISD – Ferrari take over and the gap starts to shrink.
On the main climb 60 km from goal the peloton starts breaking.
With 35 km to go Lowe and Montanari are the only riders left of the break. With a minute to the favourite group their hope have about as much life as the landscape…
With 17 km to go Tiernan-Locke tries to bridge the gap to Lowe 50 second out front.
Kessiakoff and Bøchman close things down on the penultimate climb and catch the breakers while reducing the front group to 19 riders. Only Suarez and Efimkin from top 15 are missing out.
Ulissi attacks with 4 km to go just before the final hill takes a break. We don’t consider him a threat in the long run so Jakob stays in the group waiting for his moment.
That turns out to be moments later when Antón and Moreno follows up on the attack. Antón proves that he is in great form and takes the stage win.
Also it’s very nice to see Henao, Pinot, Hesjedal, De Weert and Atapuma lose even more time. I have a feeling the top 9 won’t see a lot of new riders before the finish of the race.

Stage 5: Matera – Manfredonia
This is the day for Kristoff to prove that we was right in giving him the chance to ride the Giro as our main sprinter supported by Rasmussen and Hushovd.
Kristoff is not the favourite for the sprint, but having both him and the Pink jersey forces us to work from the start to avoid the break getting out of control.
Things goes just as planned as we keep the break at just over three minutes and 45 km from the finish line Commonwealth Bank and Nissan take over.
Ion Izagirre tries hard to make it last with 9 km to go, but Nissan and Comonwealth are not easily beaten.
Ion is having a great day and forces the sprinter teams to a frantic pace making it extremely hard for Kristoff to get in position without burning all his energy before the sprint.
With 2 km to the line it looks like we will only have a sprint for 2nd place.
Kristoff follows Selig towards the front in the sprint.
Alexander is looking good, but then completely drops in spite of having plenty energy.
Meanwhile the main sprinter teams have to admit that they failed completely allowing Izagirre to take the win.
The peloton splits in the finish, but all the GC guys are in the main group.
To be honest I’m really disappointed about Kristoff. He says he wants to ride bunch sprints. Three guys burn themselves out getting him into a fairly decent place and then he just stops sprinting 200 m before the line???

Stage 6: Foggia – Napoli
An in-between stage for us. Odds are it will go to the break, so we might allow someone to go in there if possible.
Kristoff tried jumping in the break, but that wasn’t quite accepted by the others teams.
Later Hushovd gave it a shot, but that had the same effect so we decided to stay in the peloton from that time on.
In the end 9 riders are allowed away. Gavazzi is the best placed 32 minutes down, so that’s perfect for us.
Nissan and Commonwealth do the work hoping for a bunch sprint. With 90 km to go the break has 7’47’’ behind and a small mountain ahead.
Høberg takes the mountain sprint demonstrating that this is a break made for the flat terrain…
Meanwhile GC 5th Ulissi have been told to work in the peloton. Looks like he is on for a tough race on that regime!
The break has 5’24’’ to the peloton at the summit. All the main sprinters are still in the peloton so the chase continues.
With 15 km to go the break was finally caught.
Then all radio communication was lost and the next thing I hear is that Castroviejo and Wegmann surprised the sprinters just as they were setting up their trains.

Stage 7: Gaeta - Roma
The Long awaited cobbled stage. Antón hates cobbles. Fuglsang is a previous MTB World Champion and we want to make today an important stage for the GC as well!
There’s plenty of attacks early on, but also plenty of teams wanting to keep them in.
In the end 14 riders get away and when the break hits the first cobbles they have a gap of five minutes to the peloton. With strong cobblers like Klemme, Baugnies, Flens and Declercq in there they should have good chances to grab the stage win.
We get a good collaboration going with Vacansoleil and Liquigas to shake the top climbers.
Alex Rasmussen, Bøchman and Hushovd does the dirty work while Kristoff is taking care of keeping Fuglsang out of trouble.
The guys do an amazing job and with 47 km to go the peloton cracks with us in the front group and Antón lost behind with no decent cobblers to help him!
The front group only has 3’30’’ to Groupe Fuglsang.
The two main groups were reunited on the following long section of good roads, but at least we know that Antón is vulnerable today.
Rick Flens is alone in front with 24 seconds to Klemme, Declercq and Baugnies with 6,5 km left of the stage.
The Dutchman makes it last right to the line.
We continue the work relentlessly to crack Antón for good and Jakob is completely exhausted at the end of the day, but the time gain on Igor is definitely worth it!
Almost 5 minutes won on Antón at the cost of Sonny Bak’s further participation is ok even though we had hoped to keep the young Dane in the race a bit longer.

Based on that stage Pozzovivo now looks to be a real contender for a podium/ overall victory after hanging in the peloton. |

Great job by the entire squad, they really pulled it off. And yeah, just using the right effort is definitely the trickiest part of this stage.
Getting rid of the greatest opponent calls for a little celebration. Just not too much, the next 2 weeks will be already tough enough without having to suffer a hangover.
Also looking forward to how Anton will react to this defeat in the mountains. Pretty sure the norsemen won't let him pull a Floyd Landis on them though.
