I'd differentiate pro cycling from cycling in general. If Pro Cycling is dumb or absurd enough to dig its own grave, because of various reason (corruption, doping, etc.), let it be, that won't prevent me from enjoying riding my bike.
Also it gives a brighter idea of what's remotely possible on a bike and what's totally ridiculous.
As for going to peaks, I went to the Alps in 2006 (13 hours of train, just to go), and to the Pyrénées the next year (make that 10 hours). It's the same country, but not exactly next door. |

If I'd win so much left and right, I'd probably say too that it's all about the fun for me

Did my debut in the senior norwegian cup today, and well, it was hard. Were taken out at the 3-minute rule after 2 of 6 laps (like more than a third of the peloton) but still fun to ride with the best boys in the country. Ended up as about 120 out of 178 starters I think. Forgot my Garmin, though, so can't upload anything.
The swede Michael Olsson won in front of Sindre Eid Hermansen and Stian Remme, all well renomated riders on continental level. Quite a hard race, 4 minutes to 7th place. |

So... today was the day I finally made my debut on my first ever race bike.
It's been a long time coming since buying it last year (winter...), so I've basically just stared on it until today where I had all the equipment I needed, everything adjusted to my needs, perfect weather etc. etc.
So, I get outside and just circle around just in front of my house, learning how to clip and unclip. And after about 45 seconds of doing this, my back tire flats...
At least I got some experience in how to fix a flat tire. |

You got unlucky there! I am still nervously awaiting the first puncture on my bike, which at a guess has done 1500-2000 miles now. I'm not going to be very good at fixing it when it does happen - so just hope it happens close to home!

My first puncture happened when I was 20kms away which is not long.

I joined the PCMDaily Strava group too.
I hope i can make use of it for the first time tomorrow, just an easy 15km spin at lunchtime to get things going.
Also, can you confirm what i think somebody said here before, that if you stop (at traffic lights), Strava will pause the recording?

First of all, have fun with Strava
I'm using Garmin Edge and that device stops recording when I stop. When I'm back home, I import the .gpx file from my Garmin to Strava.
I don't know if there is a sort of "data loss", doing it this way.

It doesn't actually pause the recording - you would have to press the pause button to do that.
Strava does differentiate between total time and moving time though. So any time spent stopped will not be counted when it gives you your average speed for the ride.
If you stopped in the middle of a segment though, the non-moving time is counted. So it can be frustrating on a couple of regular segments I ride on when the traffic lights are red, and I lose a chance of doing a good segment time.

Yes, bad luck indeed. I've given up on the idea of ever being able to efficiently change an inner tube...
Seems less painful to me to choose a decent puncture resistant tyre, keep the tyres well inflated and typically get 3000 km puncture free without worrying about constantly carrying a repair kit (which I'd only make a balls of using anyway).
Granted when it does finally go I need to employ the train pass/legs/mobile phone or (if I'm really lucky) conveniently located Googled bike shop but to someone with sausage fingers and the manual dexterity of a walrus they are all easier options!

Changing a tyre is easy... once you get the knack down. I used to have really old tyres and tubes that would snake-bite about every 10miles so with practice i can change a tube in a few minutes and without needing to swear!
Like with all cycling practice makes perfect

Speaking of different versions of Garmin Edge, most of them have an option in the settings to turn on "auto pause", meaning the computer, and also the file on Strava, won't show your pause. Then the computer automatically pauses when you've a pause in your ride, and it starts again when you start riding. |

Experience has taught me it would take me more practice than most...
Tbh any manual stuff (which I am universally poor at) just doesn't interest me so I rarely get that practice in - vicious circle...I've come to terms with it

You can even play with the speed the pause kicks in so it doesn't think you are stopping when you're climbing the local wall in slow motion...or is that just me? |

I have a Garmin Edge 800. And I have 2 option for auto pause:
1) Auto pause under a certain speed
2) Auto pause at speed 0km/h
I use option 2.
