Nordic Cycling | Final Farewell
Ian Butler
Just lacked that final punch in the sprint. But it's nice to see the Belgian Jersey take the win here. Sorry Nordic cycling, Belgium stays for the Belgians just for now, conquer the rest of the world first Wink

Miguel: Yeah, we were unlucky. With thre riders in top 15 we could easily had gotten one in top 10 had they had a decent daily form...

sutty: He did in deed.

welker: Sometimes you just have to be happy with a good effort and then hope it gets rewrded better next time.

Ian: It's a small comfort that I made his jersey for him Wink

A small comfort but a comfort nonetheless Wink
I also want to thank you specifically for giving me the motivation to start a new story, Atlantius! Thanks to this great story and the way you're keeping with it, I've been inspired to make a story about a Norwegian rider Wink

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco

For most of the riders this is mainly a warm-up/warm-down race so we haven't got any real expectations except going for whatever chances may arise.

Stage 1: Zierbana – Zierbana

Veikkanen went in the break, but all day ISD – Ferrari kept things under control and set a hard pace over the hills.

Bøchman, Fuglsang and Matzen were all among the 29-riders finishing ahead while Chris Anker Sørensen missed out on the split.
In the and Urán rewarded his team for all their hard work all day.

Fuglsang is the weakest on the day, but that is expected since this is not a main goal for him.
It’s a close sprint for the win, but Lasse and Brian pull the shortest straws.

Veikkanen tried to make it one for the break, but it ended up like the previous days.
After a lot of attacks in the last 20 km it came down to a three-rider sprint between Urán, Fuglsang and Elissonde.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-02-Vasco-3-2_zps598fedd7.jpg
At least that’s how it seemed before the peloton came blasting back…

It wasn’t until right on the line that Fuglsang saw the Belisol rider on the far side of the road. Guess that means losing by the width of a hair to Urán a bit more beareable.

Stage 4: Murgia Zuia – Eibar
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-02-Vasco-4-1_zps80515ed7.jpg
If you were to call this the Queen Stage you would be right. A hard day finishing off with the hardest climb of the race. A lot of answers will be given today!

Chris went in the break hoping to pick up some mountain points. He did get a few but Kelderman utterly destroyed the break on the climbs resulting in it being very short lived.

At the same time Matzen and Bøchman were caught a bit unaware as ISD – Feraari suddenly upped the effort and they lost contact with the main favourites group along with among others Chavez, Porte and Van den Broeck. Luckily Jakob said over the radio that he was feeling just perfect!

The penultimate climb was turned hard by several attacks and Fuglsang had to struggle to get past the slow half of the group filling up all the road.

Fuglsang did well to shake things up on the final climb, but today Andy Schleck was just the strongest, while Kelderman brutally tore the white jersey off Matzen.

Urán holds on to the lead in same time as Froome and 1 seconds ahead of Schleck.

Not an easy stage, but probably not hard enough to make major time differences either. Still it’s an obvious chance for Chris to have another go at the mountain jersey.

He got in the break, but felt worse than a Giraffe on Antarctica all day, so no jersey for him…

In a mix of the strongest breakers and the favourites Urán proves why he’s in yellow, while Fuglsang successfully builds a gap to Kreuziger and moves up a spot in the GC.

With three riders within a second and 6 riders within a minute in the top of the GC this will be a very exciting TT.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-02-Vasco-6-2_zps3c1a18b2.jpg
Bøchman does great setting provisional best time with 23 riders yet to finish.
Gesink is 3 seconds slower, but unfortunately De Gendt is 3 seconds faster than Lasse.
Kruziger is another 9 seconds faster and Fuglsang is 2nd best in goal 8 seconds slower than the Czech.

A mixed bag of results for the guys in Spain, but Fuglsang should be happy with his fifth place Overall Smile

Atlantius
sutty: Fuglsang did great considering he wasn't even in form going into the race (about 82 fitness...)

Ian: It says a lot about how far the team has come that a 5th in Pai Vasco is "decent" and "steady" Wink

Paris - Roubaix

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-1_zpsaa1aaad3.jpg
With plenty of cobbles, no hills and a 5th place from last year this is the one race Erik McDermott have been talking about for the last 364 days…

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-2_zps01c26943.jpg
For several teams the opening 90 km are their only chance to show the jersey so we let them.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-3_zps5be2cd9d.jpg
Commonwealth Bank – GreenEdge are not as generous and keep everyone on a leash.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-4_zpsb556ef64.jpg
Veikkanen and Kristoff do some very nice work making the race hard and reducing the front group to 37 riders with 100 km to go.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-5_zpsd2e254c8.jpg
And then things take a dramatic turn as Boonen gets a puncture and has to wait for to long for help to arrive. 1’40’’ is the gap when he is back rolling.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-6_zps36912dd8.jpg
Cancellara is told about Boonen's bad luck and jumps straight to the front of the group to take full advantage.

With 60 km to the velodrome 23 riders are left in front. Breschel and McDermott are the only Nordics still left after Hushovd have done some good work taking care of the two and have gotten rest of the day off to enjoy his last ride towards the velodrome.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-7_zps722c105a.jpg
The other favourites seem to think they can tire Erik out before the finish.
Not much success though…
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-8_zpsa8305ee2.jpg
With 24 km left Breschel decides to up the effort a bit.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-9_zps2d8de280.jpg
We never expected him to be allowed away and both Sagan and Gallopin attack soon after Matti with Erik right in their wheels.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-10_zps50c8464a.jpg
Just as Boonen fights his way to the 12-rider front group Erik decides to really put the pressure on. Boom and Vinther looks like the strongest, but this section was not quite long enough to get rid of anyone.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-11_zps59cd01d2.jpg
Cancellara attacks but ends up acting as a launch pad for Erik, who goes solo into the last 10 km.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-12_zps73f7f67e.jpg
On the final pave towards the velodrome he has 20 seconds to Cancellara and a further 20 seconds to Gallopin. The podium seems secure, but the dream doesn’t end there!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-13_zps2e52d8fe.jpg
The Swiss champion has nothing left and Erik rides on to the victory he has dreamt of ever since he first sat on a bike!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-08-PR-14_zps644c81df.jpg
Vinther makes it two riders in top 10 for Denmark while Breschel beats Flecha in the sprint for 11th

Banana ERIK!

Relatively small time gaps suggests the pace/ weather wasn't a real killer, although Erik killed everyone off.

Can we see his cobble?!!!? Grin

Nice win indeed...but terrible luck for Boonen.Sad
Die hard fan of Tom Boonen and Quickstep since 2004.

Atlantius
sutty: It was. I called it when he joined the team back in August 2012 that one day he would win this race Wink

MrUfo: I suppose. I had planned to attack there anyway, so it was really nice that Cancellara would use the last bit of his energy to deliver Erik Wink

Ian: The Belgians can have Belgium, but we draw the line at France!

The Rider: I don't think they are completely just. We managed to eliminate most of the helpers fairly early forcing the favourites themselves to do some work earlier than usual. Yet there wasn't a lot of attacking before the final part. I believe that was mainly due to everyone being exhausted. Hadn't Hushovd and Breschel been dedicated to protecting McDermott he would have been to...
His CO is 83 and his STA 80 and flat 76 which makes this the perfect race for him. And I haven't touched his stats or limits at any point, only trained him focused for 4 years Wink

kubys: That's the cobbles for you Sad Had he not had the puncture I expect he would have won considering that he managed to get back just before things really exploded.
